Riding two bikes that don't fit - Tiny Bike Big Bike

- If you’re in between sizes on mountain bikes and are trying to choose which to go with, this video will not help you at all. However I can provide a little advice. A larger bike will tend to give you the sensation of sitting “inside” the bike. This can be both confidence inspiring and more stable. If you like the feeling of sitting on top of the bike, and being able to throw it around and play on it, going smaller might be the ticket. I personally prefer smaller.
What we’re doing today is strangely consistent with the above sentiment. On the size XL Canyon Neuron I tested, I was indeed a lot more stable and confident. On the 14” Prevelo toddler bike I was most definitely sitting way up on top.

Canyon Neuron 5 bit.ly/45DYglU
Considering this bike has a dropper post, Rockshox front and rear, and excellent styling for under $2000, I think it’s a no brainer for someone of any size. Keep in mind, it’s not just available in XL 🤣
Prevelo Zulu One bit.ly/3p9KGq6
I’m slightly embarrassed to say that I’ve ridden this bike several times, and it’ll be what my daughter rides very soon. Need I say more?

I’m pretty sure Seth rode that kids bike down that trail faster than I could on my properly sized MTB.
I was going to say... The skinny B line would be hard for me on a normal sized bike for me lol

What's going on: 🔘I'm in this post and I don't like it.
😅
Yes me too,
Ok, but genuinly, if you are between 2 sizes:
- Choose the smaller one if you like to jib around and have a fun and manuverable bike, both in the air and with tires on the ground.
- Choose the larger one if your priority is speed on the trail or racing. It will give you more stability and overall be the faster bike in the large majority of trails.
HAVE FUN WITH YOUR NEW BIKE!
The way Seth monster trucked the rock garden with the big bike and the giggles he had when he conquered that skinny on the kid's bike are undoubtful confirmation of your statement.
also it is probably a better idea to go with the bigger one if you are young and still growing
Generally good advice. I know geometry is more complex than a youtube post, but generally it's easier to make a small bike bigger than a big bike smaller. I find this particularly in road bikes. It's also confusing out there with so many manufacturers, geo charts, different ways of measuring the same thing, and the days of demo rides getting fewer and fewer.
If your area requires alot of climbing, go with a smaller frame. Less weight and maybe better peddling position. I just switched from a large to a medium ( I am 5'8"), and it has been a world of difference in my efficiency.
@@rmprit0137 Yes, I'm generally a "medium", but I usually find my bikes (all circa 2017) a bit short so I've just gone with a 20mm longer stem (35 to 50, or 50 to 70). Gets me a bit of weight over the front but no so much that descending is a nightmare. You can also experiment with the fore/aft of the saddle. I'd hate to try and shorten a big bike as they usually have a 35mm stem and it's hard to shorten that up. And shoving the seat all the way forward can be as wonky as all the way back. If you're maxed on saddle fore/aft you should consider a re-fit.
As someone who is 6'4, i think the Prevelo might fit me.
That's cool, you might be able to start finger biking! Have fun!
6.4cm you need my finger bike
@@jpfidalgo7 as a shorter man, I confirm the importance of finger exercising
It might fit me better, I’m 6’6.
@@venvo27 im 6'6 too cursed, just today i was thinking how ugly my XL bike is compared to the small sizes
I think this is really a testament to how good a rider Seth really is! Impressive honestly.
Now I know why used balance and toddler bikes are always in such bad condition. The parents are riding them😜
I want someone to make a good adult sized balance bike.
@@teijaflink2226Blake from GMBN made one a few years ago
Seeing Seth absolutely shred on the prevelo is exactly what I wanted to see for so lang and just what I needed today. Thanks!
The fact that he actually rode that trail on that kids bike is impressive! I’m almost 6’5 and barely stay upright on my XL bike!!
Second this!
Watching Seth send it on the toddler's bike down the rock garden was hilarious.
We learned today that Seth will try and kill himself for our entertainment….thanx Seth….glad you are still alive!!
How is this not on the main channel??? So funny, caught myself laughing so may times during the video. Not only that but had me nervous and relieved for you when you did it. Keep up the amazing work Seth. So excited to see what happens in the years to come.
Self preservation is clearly not one of your life’s goals! 😀
Bike sizes always seem pretty close together but then from a small to XL the difference is crazy.
Yeah crazy small like a 1 inch difference😂
You should’ve put good pedals on the prevelo probably would’ve inspired more confidence
Haha... I think we're splitting hairs here but you're right. I never even thought about swapping the pedals.
I didn't see a single colored ziptie or crimp. Definitely the problem.
And a bmx handlebar ;D
Better grips too!
And stickers so your even faster
Mate, impressive stuff considering that you have already done a collarbone. Can't believe that the cranks and pedals held up on that small bike.
I no riht
I'm 6'1" and when I bought my first "proper" mountain bike I got an XL. HUGE MISTAKE. My experience was the same as yours, having no ability to lean back and being scared on even small declines. It made me think that since becoming a full grown man I'd somehow lost the ability to ride the way I could as a teenager. So for years I didn't own any bike until recently when I decided to buy a cheap medium downhill bike to tool around my farm on and it all came rushing back. All the skills are still there, I just needed a smaller size because my legs are short. Height means nothing.
I'm 6'2.5" and usually ride XL bikes and have no problem with them but would like to try a large to see if it'd be more fun
I'm 6'3" with an XL hard-tail, and a L hard-tail (2017 Marin Bobcat 4). I admit I like riding the smaller bike better. They are both 29ers, but the smaller bike has 2.2" wheels, while the XL has 2.5" wheels. Being lighter and smaller makes for a fun ride. If the bike feels too big then don't force it and just go with a smaller bike.
@@joecanuck3751 I've been thinking of getting a large hardtail like a Roscoe 9. It has a slightly longer reach than other large hardtails so I think I could ride it comfortably. I could also install a longer stem.
For what it’s worth, stated size is a terrible, TERRIBLE metric for choosing a bike. I’m 6’1” and a progressive geometry size large works well for me, and an XL giant trance is too small, while still having the seat tube too long to get out of my way. It’s all about the numbers.
Yeah, I'm 6'4" but it's all in my legs so the xxl works pretty good for me. My L trail bike feels like a toy great for jumps though
Seth! As someone who is 6'4" and rides a XXL frame, I appreciate you putting the Canyon out there for us taller riders. I had a terrible time finding a bike that I was comfortable riding, and didn't break the bank. Great video as always!
Same here man. I have a xxl xc bike and a large full suspension for manuverability
I like to size down. More fun and more comfortable. I'm 6' so the bike shops usually put me on XL bikes but those bigger bikes just wear me out. Although they can be faster and more confidence inspiring, I'm not racing or trying to set strava times so smaller bikes are the way to go for me.
XL would usually be too big for 6' imho. I'm 6-1 and L is usually perfect. Check the Lee Likes Bikes RAD sizing method as there can be variation in sizing.
At 5'8" I should ride a medium, however I have long arms. I like to ride a large size for the reach.
@@jamesroscoe7555 Every bike fits different too, a trek Marlin for example usually fits small. Not to mention people come in all shapes and sizes. Test rides are fantastic for feeling out what size you need too
@@JB-1138 Yeah I tend to just look at the dimensions overall and not really go by just the size letter. Each brand has such different stats these days.
You should start a small bike racing league cuz it was awesome watching you ride that.
This would be so hilarious. Matt and Jono Jones rip these little suckers on their channels too. Sam Pilgrim as well.
Commenters: "hey can we have a real serious discussion about this issue?"
Seth: "lol no. Tini bike"
Love it
I just recently started mountain biking, and it gives me a new appreciation for how good Seth’s body positioning and bike handling skills are, if he can ride those ridiculous bikes so well!
That Prevelo reminds me of the days I used to ride trails with a BMX Bike. The JOY I felt when I gained an actual mountain bike!!
I am frequently between sizes and here's what I've discovered throughout the years. Between adjusting the dropper post height (having a dropper in general), dozen of stem options, dozen of bar widths and rises, crank length, and so forth, bike fit comes from the harmony of the components and rarely the frame size alone. The point is just pick one, it likely doesn't matter as much as you think. Especially when you consider that bike sizes brand to brand very so differently. I've ridden mediums that feel like larges from some brands and larges that feel like mediums even though the "sizes" say they are the same. The point is if you're in between sizes odds are you can ride both and it doesn't matter what you pick you're likely going to change the components to make it work for you regardless.
I both learned something AND found it entertaining. Thanks Seth!
I love that youre featuring the Prevelo, I’ve been looking at them for a while for my son and they pass the Seth test. But because of you they are all sold out now! Talk about that Berm Peak Bump!
Ok WHAT!? What an absolute maniac! He legit shredded that kids bike waaaay harder than anyone else on youtube, let alone me on a regular bike!
What a boss. Going down the flight deck with both. Amazing.
Seth.. I love you bro. Love the way you think and present your ideas. Love your work!!!
Ps.. now I can't watch this with my 4 year old with out him wanting a new bike 😂
I DID learn something! I learned that technical bike park on a toddler bike with a few friends looks like a hoot and a half!
Love the POV footage! Overall one of your best videos in a long time! Maybe even ever!
Seth, you are a comedic genius. keep it up
I am just in the XL size. For uphill and normal trails the bike is perfect. For steep technical sections or sketchy forest hills I would like a size smaller.
that Canyon neuron looks so sick!!
I'm 6'6" and I would totally buy it if I had the money. I love mountain biking and I've always wanted to try a Canyon bike! loved the video keep it up!
Having actually seen you in person this weekend at bike fest, I will say that watching you on that XL is very impressive.
You’re a lunatic! And that’s why I always enjoy your videos! Been watching since the start and still enjoying every video!
Just got a canyon Neuron cf a few months ago and love it
That bike with its saddle up in the business reminds of the pre dropper days!
The apology at the end 🤣 always worth watching anything from Seth 👏 plus as someone who rides an XL frame, it is very funny watching someone who is too small for it, attempting to ride it
Seth, that started out hysterical, and then got terrifying! Omg, what a riot! We appreciate what you do to entertain us, but please be careful.
Seth well done mate that was entertaining and glad no injuries to you.
this was easily one of the greatest videos i’ve ever watched
I had a good laugh, thanks. This was a size disparaging comparison to the extreme, props to your bravery!
Learned to keep riding and have fun!
Seth you should do a video putting expensive parts on the prevelo baby bike. 😆
How do you come up with crazy ideas like this?!? Love it!
i really cant believe you did pucker plank on that tiny bike.. much respect.
Seth’s out there bombing down trials in a 14” mtb for research and entertainment purposes. Legend.
This video was incredibly stressful. You are a mad man!
Fantastic video Seth, I was genuinely scared for you on the mini bike rock garden, but as always you smashed it 😁
Hats off to you sir!
So about getting behind the seat on steep stuff… I was always told the same thing and did that for a very long time. But then I was out in southern utah and rode with some locals. One of them, an extremely advanced rider told me something interesting… on super steep rock rolls and stuff, with modern bike geo it’s better to stay neutral on the bike (about where the seat is) and get as low as possible. I’m not sure if this is the orthodox method for this but southern utah has some of the steepest gnarlyest rolls around. Iv been trying it with good success. Not sure if it is actually better but I definitely felt more control and is something to look into.
I'm 6'0 on a XL Specialized cross trail. I just put bmx bars on it, feels like a horse I love it.
Glad to hear about this topic
Probably the first time i see a neuron in a video 🙈
Im riding one myself, and love it!
Clicked on the video for some fun, and you didnt disapoint! That drop in on the small bike though! 😅
You are a madman! The puckerplank gave me legit anxiety.
I will tell you want I "learned in this video". Your videos are freaking awesome.
I 100% called the loop out on the Prevelo. Anyone who’s rolled in to anything on a kid’s bike will know…looping out is the only possible result. 🤣 Great fun! 🤘
I’m right between a Small and Medium frame size for most manufacturers. After decades of riding I always go smaller for play/XC bikes (more flickable, lighter, easier to manipulate) and then go bigger for my enduro/DH bikes (more stable, more room to move forward/aft).
Sensible
Both were difficult.... but you did it. Hero status!!
This is my favourite video so far. Absolutely hilarious.
I ride my sons prevelo zulú 2 around the neighborhood. Can’t believe the bike can handle my weight. Amazing brand.
So gnarly you tried the toddler bike on that drop in.
I noticed that shirt at the Bentonville Bike Festival. Looks good!
A great video and a good way to emphasize on the importance for bike size, lol.
I've ridden my kids 14 inch pedal striders...what Seth did was godmode.
Usually between sizes will not have the saddle too high problem. I'm 5'4~5'5“ with 32" inseam. My choices today are small frame with giant dropper post or medium frame with giant reach. I usually go smaller but there is no better way than riding the bike itself. I've got a medium 27.5 canyon and two years later I've visited the factory and found the small to be a better choice.. nevertheless, I think wheel sizes play a bigger role here. I feel better on a medium 26“ or medium 27.5" than on a size small 29er epic full sus that I currently ride. I still have the other bikes to compare so this is not memory based. Unfortunately small tires are hard to find and we always feel like pushed to go bigger wheels even making no scientific sense (I'm a mechanic engineer by trad and done all the math already). I've gain zero seconds on my local trails when switching from 27.5 flat pedals to 29 clipless. Same ZTR creat wheelset, 29er is even a pound lighter but even so I never have the feeling it to be more right than the 27.5
That prevelo is super impressive for a balance bike and would last forever... if seth wasn't riding it 😂 great video as always
That was Insane! LOL - I need to get that little bike for my Grandson!
Seth, you absolute madlad!
Entertaining! Thanks Seth.
THATS WHAT IM TALKIN ABOUT! editing is on point
Today I learned that Seth is a badass
Lol! You are one crazy SOB, Seth. And thanks for the hardtail love. You know, you spent a LOT of cash on one. They are just as much fun as a FS. . . . if ridden properly. They are great to learn line choice, and can be (CAN be in some circumstances) faster than a FS. If you want to go ride trails, a hardtail is a great entry bike. You get better components for the money vs a FS. More wheel size choices, from standard to plus tires, in old 26" to current 27.5 to 29. Look at manufacturers in your riding area for the most competent bike IN your area. They ride what you ride. Oh, yeah, sizing rule of thumb has almost always been go to the smaller size frame for more agility and larger size for stability.
Anyone who knows you by now should realize this wasn't clickbait. It was just you writing a big bike in a small bike, I had no thought of it being clickbait until you mentioned it there at the end lol. Roll on my friend!!
i love your videos and i have been very enspired by you hope you post again soon
Seth on that small bike is way better than me on my regular bike and I am sort of enjoying that fact.
Dude, you had me scared watching!!! That was the most fun I’ve had watching something in a while. I just kept think “don’t die”🤣🤣
Way too funny - but sometimes the outrageous is necessary to make your point. How you maintained your COG on the tiny bike on that downhill is beyond me. Nicely done!
My first bike was a Large Titan XC bike with 29" wheels. I'm 2M tall. Needless to say I since upgraded to a S5 Specialized Stumpjumer. Some days even that feels small and cramped. Can't even imagine fitting on that prevelo😂
Always entertaining Seth… always!
This is why it is good to put kids on the largest wheel size they can manage if you want to take them on trails at a young age. Every little pebble is a hangup on tiny wheels with little legs and can result in frustration for them. Kids bikes that are geometrically a bit like 29ers allow a bit larger wheel for a given kid size.
Entertaining video!
yup. thats the principle i use to this day. i was between sizes too. i chose the 29er but the smaller frame. havent regretted it a single day.
I learned that I want to see you revisit BMX bikes on mtb trails now that you’re not in Florida on sand like before. You can do 20”, 24”, hell, you could get a Fairdale Taj and try it. I’d love to see how my bike would do on a downhill trail.
video idea: put an uncut fork on a bike and the raised reversed stem on it. tallest handlebars bike
The technical reason you survived that is because you're a next level rider.
I go 150mph all the time and for me to say ide be terrified to do this respect Seth 100%
This was a fun video, thanks Seth I'm truly entertained :)
U are a great rider doing a moderate technical single track on a circus clown bike KuDos !!! Built like a brick dog house...love it :)
Omg. Just the shots of you on that bike (tiny one) were epic. Lol.
You're a mad man for taking that tiny bike down the flight deck..
Okay you went wayyyy faster down that on the kids bike than I thought you would!! 🤯
"Getting up too much speed on this little bike might be a fatal mistake."
SENDS IT
A series of Seth riding the tiny bike down various trails would be awesome.
Seth riding a toddler bike on a trail is one thing I didn't know I needed to see in my life
Dude a channel or series like flip bike (which was SUPER SUCCESSFUL) where you get an old crapy bike, and fix it up to just donate would be EPIC!!!
I think people like watching a bike get fixed by you because you explain what you're doing while you do it which is BETTER than looking up how to videos. It is the BEST way to learn, you're a great educator.
Reminds me of every demo event I've ever done where guys between 5'4-5'8 ask for an xl
Actually like the feel of larger bike. I should be a size medium based on my height, but with long arms, a size large fits better.
I think it goes back to when I was a kid. My dad always bought my bike larger so that I could grow into it.
super fun... thanks for the laughs
Ok seeing seth ride down the rock garden on that tiny bike was absolutely hilarious 😂
Seth is so much better on a toddler bike than I am on a proper sized bike. I would love to see a flip on that Prevelo though. I think he can pull it off
Now we need to see the Prevelo turned into a full suspension bike. 😆
Genius concept, laughing the whole time :)
we learned. it was entertaining. thank you.
