When I was in fourth / fifth grade in Portland I delivered 30 afternoon papers and a big Sunday morning paper and bought me a large skinny wheel 3-speed cruiser bicycle. I could stand on the pedals and coasting down the hill in the middle of the road swinging the bike left and right with my arms in the air until one day I ended up in the ditch. My family also delivered the morning paper until we made enough to buy our first color TV for the living room. That route was done in a station wagon as it was a cold snowy winter.

@@kyshawntv6285quite late, but unless you're looking at a used ebike... please save up for something decent. Even just the electronic system matters. Like, you can upgrade your groupset, wheels, fork and whatever, but if you buy an ebike for a thousand dollars new, you'll get a system that may or may not be supported by anyone in a year or two. Bosch, Shimano and Bafang are three household names for ebike systems which will be supported for quite a while. As an example: the Bosch classic system is more than 10 years old at this point, but you can still get parts, because they didn't make major changes until like 2021 or 2022. So let's say you buy a used bike with that old system, as long as you know what you're looking for, you can get a new motor, display, battery, cables, etc etc without running into trouble. And I've seen bikes with that system rolling into our shop with 25k miles on them. That's always something to consider

The kit bike ran pretty well, but direct drive will be slower off the line than a 5x gear reduction motor if power levels are similar. A friend of mine has a 3T direct drive motor from an Onyx on his custom bike, and it will pull the front wheel off the ground at 30mph! Craig's battery is a Unit Pack Power, which is a good company. I made 2 bikes and bought parts separately. The 1st one was on a 20"bike with a 1500w wheel. The torque on the smaller wheel was dangerous until you learn to ease in to it, I ended up on my back a couple times. The 2nd was a 26" mountain bike I bought from Walmart with same parts it was much easier to control and a bit faster. Top speed was 32mph on the 20" and 38mph on the 26". Both still run great and my 13 year old love the 20". We go riding all the time together and have a blast. Peace

I bought a RadPower RadRover and it lasted 2 years before the LCD panel died, preventing the bike from turning on. Which might have been an easy fix if I could have figured out how to isolate the problem. Instead it took a total of 2 MONTHS to fix the issue, because every new part takes about 2 weeks to ship. Really bad. It's over a week for them to even get to your order because they just sit in queue with nobody working on it, or they only process and ship in batches once a week rather than individual orders.

I got no support at all from the manufacturer.I did this to save money but you know the saying you get what you pay for. It is now a good bike but it’s because I was willing to upgrade it customize it to my specifications. I’m also a mechanic so it was no problem installing gutter and proper equipment. I'm a semi daily Ebike commuter and i got a radrover 5. It's a good daily rider and unless it's snowing i dont mind the weather either. I can take dirt trails to and from work so I avoid traffic and when i do interact with it i can filter through the shoulder of the road. All in all if you have the ability to try it you should. Even if its just a few weeks of the year it's saved me 100s on gas while still getting me to work just as fast as a car when you count traffic
For what he paid for the 1700 bike off Amazon he could have spent 300 more and got a radpower bike or an aventon or any good brand of bike. I like all E bikes just a point to hand out that a little more would've given you alot more

*Everything you said about being a paperboy is wrong, and it’s the worst job ever. You do have a boss. You can’t work whenever you want, papers must be delivered by 6am. There’s no bikes all car. You must work every day, you can’t call out. You have to pick up papers by 3-4 am. You make anywhere from 130-250 a week depending on how many papers you have( literally like $7 an hour). You do get tips added onto that but only like 15% of people do that. And unless you are in a rich neighborhood your only getting $1-$4 a month per house that tips. If someone calls in and says their paper was late or not delivered you get docked $1-$2.50. And worst part is they take out no taxes because your an independent contractor. So come tax time you have to pay $1500-2000 per route. And some papers (like the one I worked at) you have to deliver to their doorstep. So every house you have to get out and run (walking will make you late) up to the house and back. So your spending 1-2 hours running every night, plus however long your driving. There is only one reason you should ever take this job. And that’s Christmas tips. You can get $800->$2000 in tips. Pick up a route in November (there are literally always routes open) around thanksgiving you put bulk Christmas postcards in with the paper with printed out little thank you messages and your name and address on it. Then checks just start pouring in. But don’t do it unless you get a rich town. Otherwise tips included your making 13 an hour.)*

I am so envious of the options you get in America. Here the power and type limitations make most of this impossible. We need more up to date regulations for E-bikes.

I live in **THE** place fat tire bikes were designed for. Quite literally. My closest trail system is quite literally where the fat tire bike was refined at. They're sandy river trails next door to the company (QBP/Quality Bike Products/Surly/Salsa) that popularized fat bikes, and since it's Minnesota, they also had ample access to snow.
I don't own a fat bike. They're toys. I ride practical bikes. Fat bikes are the thing to buy as a 3rd or 4th bike. I'd absolutely love to screw around with one on the trails....if I owned a car to drive it to and from the trailhead. No way in hell I'm going to put up with riding one on the road.

Saying that you don't need a license for an e-bike is not always correct. To not need a license for one you have to make sure it fits in the legal guidelines for a class 2 e-bike, then within local laws. Like where I am its 750w and 20mph max to be legal without one. Were also allowed a throttle here, but a lot of places won't allow this.

I found for the money you can build a great Ebike for less than $800 using their kit and a bike you have already But the heart of the build is your battery if he had used a Hailong 48v 20ah 1600w Panasonic triangle battery, the other fellow would had been in the dress.

Just a little bit of "trivia" here: The latest Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 that was passed, which included tax rebates for electric vehicles, did not include the E-BIKE Act. 😞 Which would have given people a 30% tax rebate on an e-bike purchase. That means you would actually be given $600 for a $2000 e-bike purchase. It was a missed opportunity to significantly advance the "Green agenda" by tapping into the poor and lower class demographic in trading in their cars for an e-bike. Not to mention it would have strengthened our aluminum industry, which is now firing tons of people due to recession...
