'No matter how many times I cut the fork it's still not long enough!' - Kevin
Iâd love a video or series of videos on taking apart & reassembling your bike! Where to put grease vs. where not to put grease, what to clean parts with, where to be careful vs. where you can yank on something⊠I think itâd be an awesome addition to the channel!
To be short dump your bike entirely in grease and rince off the grease on the brake and gripsđ
Actually don't do that .....just in case other french people read the comments đ§
Poor Kevin, hope he makes his money back on those forks.
He shouldn't be too bad. Many carbon frames have a short headtube height. He might have been able to buy a lower profile stem actually and make it work. Some stems are only around an inch tall where is attaches to the steerer tube.
Steer tube can be pressed out and a new one pressed in. I've done it a few times. I own a machine shop so was fairly easy but there are shops that specialize in it.
Shorter stack stem (DMR Defy), shorter stack upper headset (slamset or similar), plus some higher rise bars, and he could probably make that work. Still, always sucks when you forget to factor in steerer length!
@@dabooge Do you need a lot of specialty tools for that? Sounds really neat and practical
@@RC-fp1tl there is a company called ND tuned that sells the special press tools to get the job done. You'll need a minimum of 10 ton hydraulic press. I designed and made my own press out tools. That did require a metal lathe and milling machine. I've done a Rockshox revalation and a 2018 Fox 36 so far. The Fox was much easier to do. The tool I made for the Rockshox was way more complex so I wouldn't damage the crown. You can get steer tubes from ebay or aliexpress.
"Gonna take this opportunity to show him how to use some specialty tools."
*Removes crown race with dental pick and flathead*
The pick was for the seal, which is normal
They are specialty tools... just not for that application.
They were seal and trim removal kit tools. For O-rings and other stuff, perfectly fine for the job
Seems Oscar is filling his big brother Dramas shoes nicely :)

Tip: Don't try to make new threads from the broken side, instead bolt the the bolt from the good side so you don't have to worry about the thread not being straight
very true, and buy a descent tap and die set, it's really useful!
Yup this is the way to do it đ
Guess he didn't choose this way, because there were spokes in the way. ;)
@@AlBorland3877 well yes, but if it's actually expensive as seth said, and you really want to save it, taking a few spokes off would be a lot better if you ask me
@@AlBorland3877 it's a hub.. you can just rotate it to go in between the spokes...
Been here from the start and to see how far you have come has amazed me. Keep up the good work
This is why I never fully assembled bikes Iâm working on. I take the chain off or take the seat off just as a indicator that itâs taken apart and to not ride it.
Yep! I usually loosen the stem, turn the bars way off center, then tighten the stem.
I just donât let people ride my bikes period.
That's a pretty decent idea if you're worried that someone might take the bike for a ride.
Though a simple sign, sticker or something would also do the trick.
And we think Seth is sketchy...
well you actually ARE changing the properties of titanium when you heat it up to change the colors. Granted its not as much as it is with steel, but there is a slight change.
You can actually change the surface color with a specific voltage tho without changing the metal itself. For this you got to dump the piece in baking soda/water solution, connect one pole to the water itself and the other one to the metal, the duration you leave it in for and the voltage determine the color, 15v for example gives you a nice orange/gold while 22v gets you that nice purple. works great!
Heating titanium this way might not necessarily change its properties. Youâd have to heat it to itâs recrystallization temperature to do that. From some quick googling it seems you have to get it to 600-700 F for the oxide layers to form, whereas the recrystallization temp is over 1500 F. So if youâre careful with the torch you wonât be changing the properties at all
There's no way you're "changing the properties" of either the titanium or the steel by waving a MAPP gas torch at it for a few seconds. All he's doing in the video is putting a little surface finish on the titanium. To change the bulk properties of titanium or steel would require a much larger heat source applied over a much longer time.
@@acochran9768 well if you were to actually color the whole crank you would definitely change at least part of the structure of the metal
@@7452Michael well with torches like he used, they get to around 4000°F. You'd have to be REALLY careful not to change the structure at least a bit. Probably not even worth mentioning bit I'd still rather use the electric method for a structural part like a crank, collar or similar..
@@dermax_hd You're just burnishing the surface. No different than anodizing (which is what you describe). To change the structural capacity of Ti or CrMo (crank, frame, whatever) you have to change the microstructure which requires a bunch of stress, or a lot of heat (or both), and/or an aggressive chemical environment that causes some kind of cracking.
seth: "guess who broke my bike?"

Man this is my favorite video by far! Keep up the good work. You have inspired many people including myself by just doing what you love. Thanks
I'm so glad Seth is back to uploading videos regularly, I truly missed him
There's usually a notch on the inside of an oval chainring that should line up with your crank. That's how you know it's oriented right
I like these videos of guys just hanging out working on bikes. And we got tips we usually miss from actual repair videos.
Seth the kinda guy to break a bike and then fix it, because he seems like a wholesome, normal guy
"I think Seth's gonna be upset with me ...again". haha
For forks with short steerer tube, have a look at the Syntace stems. The Flatforce needs only 22mm steerer tube and when turned upside down raises the bar significantly, which replaces those spacers. Or, more conservatively, the Megaforce3 needs 30mm of steerer tube but only has a 6 degree angle, so it wonât raise the bar so high.
I love how Seth is genuinely excited to teach Kevin. Mad respect for the knowledge transfer
This is the best video in a REALLY long time. Seth is BACK!!!!

These videos are amazing to watch there smooth and are just great in general good job Seth keep up the good work
Letâs go 700k congratulations Seth
Keavinâs like a blister always shows up after the works done
Kevin could try the Deity Copperhead stem, it has a really low stack hight and might just fit on that fork, you could also get a lower profile headset such as a Cane Creak Slamset.
Totally! or sell it to someone on a frame with a shorter head tube.
It's pretty cool to watch a video with u and a other person for fixing bikes
This video was just fun. Super entertaining to watch!!!
Kevin could try using/switching to a BMX stem, those're also made with a 31.8 handlebar clamp diameter suitable for MTB handlebars these days but also have a really low stack height for the steerer clamp. That way he might be able to keep using that fancy fork.

Hello Seth, great content as usual. I was watching a youtuber called Wirtual, a gamer who plays a racing game called Trackmania, and someone commented your catchphrase "and today we're doing something different, but kinda the same" and it got 800+ likes. I just want to share that I find it cool that you have an overlap with a racing game, and ironically enough that racing game doesn't have many ties with other games, but somehow it has overlap with you. Keep it up man, big fan from Norway!
Love the new hip hop music style, kept it up Seth!
Honestly, Seth should just accept it. There's never going to be a moment where he won't get the
"Hey Seth/Dad---" I broke/Need to fix... xyz and I missed step y." It's inevitable. My mum and dad still get video and regular old phone calls for this stuff all the time.
Poor Kevin, hopefully he can return or re sell the fork đ
You guys are great! I laughed through the whole video! Just what I needed today. You both have so much patience or you're amazing at editing or both, either way, this was totally entertaining! I loved when Kevin called Seth Dad!đ Great video. You should sell day passes for people to help out with work on the trails. You're like an amusement park and the payoff is, at the end of the day, we get to send every trail, after signing a waiver of course! I would definitely make the drive up there for that and then I would cook us all dinner in that amazing kitchen.. I've been cooking for large groups for 25 years. âđ€

Seth should restart his podcast!
In the spirit of making it work and finding a way, Kevin might beable to find a stem that isnât as tall so that it has a shorter stack height and get a thinner headset spacer to install that fork
Something like dmr defy stem should work.
Or remove headset spacer all together. You can do without it
