Our FAIL turned into "new bike day" for a lucky kid!

- Parts bin upgrades are when we take someone's mountain bike, go through the parts bin, and do as many upgrades as we can. Kevin mentioned a kid at the summer camp he worked at, Hugo, was pushing his bike beyond its capabilities. I said, "bring it in!".
Unfortunately, we failed miserably! The cassette, fork, and several other parts just didn't fit, and finding replacements wasn't possible to do that day. So instead of upgrading Hugo's bike, we gave him a totally new one!
Stay tuned for when we DO get the right parts in, so we can finish upgrading that old hardtail as a Berm Peak project bike.

One of the good things having a popular social media channel is the power to help those who are in need. This is a great story and I'd love to see more like it. It's cool for the kid and it's invaluable PR for Seth and and his sponsors. Kid goes from a $600 bike to a nice full squish Diamondback with a Fox Kashima fork(about a $1k just for that alone). best way to convert your 3x by into 1x is shifting to the middle gear and breaking the shifter.
as proven by seth, the best way to switch from a 3x to a 1x is to change bikes.

It will technically work, but without a narrow-wide chainring up front youâll end up with chain retention issues just like before. Those teeth are a night and day difference. I learned the hard way a long time ago.

This video is one of the most wholesome biking videos I've seen because you tried so hard to upgrade the bike first try and everything went downhill but since you ride the same size bike as a kid you were able to give him your old bike since you haven't used it in a while and the kid was super happy and you could tell it in his voice and everything and this is one of the best videos I've seen in a while
I like how he has more parts at his house than chain reaction cycles has at their warehouse
LOL!! shots fired!
Based on almost anything I've ever found listed on CRC not being in stock for the last heading for 10 years, that mightn't be as impressive as it sounds.
I think Seth has just started the Berm Peak Foundation.
Another challenge: see how well a gravel bike does on your trails
Road bike like Sam pilgrims one
Gravel bikes suck!
@@BriansRCStuff Gravel bikes are actually good as hell
Underbiking rules! Great way to learn how to roll in the dirt. I'm so old we rode trail on road bikes back in the ' 70s& '80s before MTBs became a big deal. Touring bikes ride dirt well too. The funniest part was hiker's reactions way back when! They'd look at us like we were aliens. After a few years it wasn't so funny anymore!
My favorite bikes these days are fixed geared or singlespeed 'cross bikes. More fun than should be legal. Especially on some rocky singletrack.
If you like to ride on boring gravel.... I guess they are good for that. If you like to get beat to hell on more aggressive trails they are pretty awesome.... sigh
These are some of my favorite videos you do man! Giving back to the community. This kid is gonna remember this FOREVER!
Great thing you did, Seth! It's nice having sponsors help out but that young man would not be the recipient of this generosity if it wasn't for you and your connections. I have become a bigger fan.
"I didn't even know they made freewheels anymore"-seth, 2020
Sadly, theyâre VERY common on low end bikes. In fact, itâs almost hard to find a low end bike without one. My bike, which I have been slowly upgrading, originally had a freewheel until I upgraded it to a cassette.

"Dude, I gave you a Giant to fix and you come back with a Diamondback?!"
Is that not good? I'm not really into mountain biking. I just like Seth's videos. I thought Giant and DB were about on par with brand recognition?
@@jackwillis1731 There is a stigma surrounding Diamondback that they are "department store bikes" although over the last 5-10 years they have made leaps and bounds in their technology and that specific Diamondback in the video is about the best mountain bike an average person would ride.
@@jackwillis1731 ehh kinda I mean they're probably both as known I know both of them from Seth's channel but also because I'm really into mountain biking diamondback is more of a prestigious company where you pay more you get more while giant is more of a beginner / mediocre brand
@@jackwillis1731 Well, for a long time, Diamondback used to have some quality issues. Up until about 2015-16ish they were essentially WalMart bikes. After some changes in upper management, they decided that they wanted to turn their brand around. They changed their business model to sell direct to consumer like Canyon, and showed that they could manufacture some really quality product while they revitalized their brand. Now they've proven that they are a major contender in manufacturing bikes again, but the scar of a couple of decades making terrible bikes still remains for a lot of people in the bike world
Mr. Thonk giant is not a mediocre or beginner brand. They manufacture most of the frames for nearly every bike company. Theyâre arguably better than DB because they have a larger selection and they sell stock bikes specced higher than what you would get on a 5c
This video makes me SO HAPPY! I had the COOLEST bike when i was a kid, and now that I am 39, I have the most amazing bike of my life! Perfect machines!!!!!!

Except for a freewheel and a straight-tube fork. Didn't seem to have that.
so nice of @PNWComponents to send one over! Such a good deed you did Seth! .... Good Deed Seth!!!
I love these parts bin upgrades. I have a 2012 Trek Marlin GF that I've been riding for 4 years. It began life as a 3x8 with a junky front fork and cheap rims running 2.2 inch 29'rs. Now its a 1x10 with a Manitou air sprung fork with good 29x2.4 tubeless tires on nice DT swiss rims. Lotsa people said I'm wasting money. I didn't. It taught me a lot, I got to trade parts with friends and I have a lot of nostalgia. I think its a great lesson to teach the kids on our NICA team that I coach too... to not just run to the store and buy new everytime a new fad comes along. Sometimes it makes sense, but a lot of times it doesn't.
"It's gonna get ridden, it's gonna get crashed and, to me, that's a huge win"
ye thats what he said
Seth is such a good person, also lucky heâs short so these kids parts match.

LOL! This is exactly what happened to me when I decided to do a full build on a 2004 26er carbon frame to make my vintage ( i hate that term) dream bike. Carbon frame, Magura brakes, tubeless tires. Most adults can only dream about those things.
@@ammernico it is not about what we dream of but mostly what we really need. I have a hard tail that I got for less than 100 bucks and I have a lot of fun on it. @@buckbikespent4588 yeah you're right kids don't need expensibe carbon bike bevause having carbon bike is more expensive to maintain than cheap ones. Most of the time when they get overwhelmed by maintenance they just give up caring about their bike
I just reeeeeeally hope he gave the kid some instructions about how to not break the carbon frame (if it really was carbon), what to do if the tire starts squirting milk, and what tools he now needs (fork pump, tubeless sealant, syringe).
