    I picked up a pugs 4 years ago with similar problems. I upgraded the wheel set, cockpit, and replaced the brake pads and cables. Now it is my primary MTB and I race it successfully. These og surlys are so good and they last forever.

    Glad I watched this, I have the same model Moonlander and it is due for a refurbishing(bought it new back in 2012). I looked around for a new front hub to match the original but Surly doesn't make them anymore.

    i have read that pros use really thin grease or oil to lubricate in the winter,to prevent stiffness in the movement, i will have to try this next winter.

    Alot of the newer fat tires aren't round, I think they were made alot better 5,10 years ago. Back when the tires said 15psi max on the side wall. I haven't seen a perfectly round fat tire in a while.

    Excellent vid, I just serviced my hubs, which were utterly mangled, and the bike now goes like the clappers (Farley). I will say this mate, go tubeless! It's so easy, and it's not just about punctures, the bike rides better. This might be placebo effect, but I do have Strava stats that confirm my theories! Anyway, greetings from the UK. 🤘

      @jeremygoertz  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you! Right on. I’m thinking about switching over to tubeless on this beast. I swapped my karate monkey over and can notice a difference and haven’t had any problems because of it so I should just get on this one already. Cheers from Canada👍

    What a coincidence. Yesterday I took apart the rear hub on my mukluk. I didn't have the patience to get the alignment perfect, and instead just re-adjusted the brake and derailleur.

    • @jeremygoertz
      @jeremygoertz  Před 3 lety

      That’s sweet! Yeah, the first time I put it together I was so far out that I couldn’t adjust the brake caliber to even get close so I figured I should get it at least in the ball park. 👍

  • @kelkev85
    @kelkev85 Před 2 lety +6

    I went from bud and lou with tubes to jumbo jim 4.0s tubeless and I could not believe the difference. I'm sure you have been told this before but when it comes to fat bikes the tubes have go, especially after hearing that your concerned with rolling resistance, it's an instant 10% drop even if you don't change tires.

    • @jeremygoertz
      @jeremygoertz  Před 2 lety +4

      I have had that recommended to me a few times but you have been the most convincing by far. You got me. I’m going to swap over. I appreciate your insight and look forward to seeing the difference for myself. Thank you! 👍

    • @kelkev85
      @kelkev85 Před 2 lety

      @@jeremygoertz when it comes to regular mtb or road bikes either way with or without tubes has debatable pros and cons so I reserve this advice specifically when talking about fat bikes. It's just a better experience overall.

    I wish my tyres were as easy to work with as yours. They're an absolute barsteward to get off! I had to use a pair of vicegrips to remove the rear and ended up with an egg shaped rim!

    This is such a good video and such a nice bike!
    What’s the story with the offset chain stays again? I think they offered an offset fork for it as well

    • @TheSlowworms
      @TheSlowworms Před 10 měsíci

      I did some digging and it turns out that because standard hubs weren’t very wide when this bike was made, Surly offset the hub so the chain would still clear the massive tires. Rear hubs were wider than front hubs so they stuck a rear hub on the front wheel as well

    Fortunately it's not a big thing replacing the bearings on those Surly hubs and working on a Shimano Rear Hub looked like an Deore XT it takes just a little bit time + TLC.

    It's amazing how many people will not do maintenance on something and just get rid of it. A guy I worked with was given a Jeep Grand Cherokee because it wouldn't run and the owner didn't even want to bother with it. He checked the normal stuff why an engine won't start, a coil wire later for $12 and he drove it all the time. Trust me, there is NOTHING that you own that is "maintenance free", I don't care what you or the manufacturer/seller claims.

    what are your thoughts on these 100mm Clown Shoe rims compared with 80mm rims? How does it affect tyre profile, traction, speed, cornering, etc? Is the presumably extra weight of an extra 20mm worth it?
