    I remember looking at the 3000G and 3200G in 2019 and scoffing at them. Why would I buy something like that when I could get a better GPU and CPU combo for the same price? Little did I know that a few months later those APU’s would become the only viable option

    Hey Toasty Bros thanks for the revisit of the fan favorite 3000g. I ended up building the previous Althlon 240g (3.5ghz) prior to the release of this CPU. Vega 3 is surprisingly responsive for everyday web browsing and Netflix streaming content. I ended up upgrading graphics using a discrete GT 1030 (ddr5) to relieve CPU resources and offloading it to GPU. I'm still using this system as a low powered and low heat media/light older title gaming machine. This media rig is still fast and capable everything rig.

    The stutters occur because you over burden the CPU when running without a frame limiter.
    Limit yourself to 30 fps @ 720p and enable vsync. You will be surprised just how smooth the 3000G is, even in modern titles.

  • @panagiotiskonstantakis2038

    I use it in my main system paired with a gt 1030.
    I'm actually very happy with it even in 2023 . Not my first Athlon either i started on Athlon 64 back in the day and then moved to the Athlon X2 later on . These processors are a godsent for budget conscious people who know how to manage their expectations. Also huge plus that if at somepoint you do need more horsepower AMD sockets generally provide good upgradability down the line.
    For what it is it's really a decent deal.

    I ran a 3000G for a couple months before I upgraded the Processor & GPU.(Msi B450M Pro VDH Max motherboard with 16Gb of 2667 ram) Ran games just fine with an Nvidia 1650 (GTAV, ARK, Destiny 2 @ 1080p). I had an m.2 NvMe SSD(WD Blue SN550) that ran just fine with a 2TB HDD for game storage. I also didn't have any noticeable issues with the 3000G's cooler. I have the Athlon 3000g, in an MSI a320-pro MAX mother board, and its served great since Aug 2020.
    I run Plex on it which manages 4 streams both internally and externally at 720-1080 (can not transcode or stream 4k).
    Valorant runs fine on 1080 high, but tend to play 1080 mid, cap at 60 FPS cause im using a 4k 60hertz Monitor. DayZ 720p mid too.
    4K res in Windows is fine, great for youtube, web browsing etc (upgraded to Windows 11 and seems fine so far).
    Literally made this build as a hold till I built a better one (Mac user normally), then was gunna turn this PC into a NAS and 720-1080 Plex server.. But nearly 1.5 years into it, and I'm fine for it for now, especiallty with parts not being available. I got this for £50.00, its not on for £100.00 whcih tbh, I'd avoid it at the current price.

    Building fresh new...no. BUT....I had one form an old HTPC upgrade and after some upgrades had an AM3 platform left to build a PC. SO on an older B450 + 2X8 DDR + Samsung SSD and my old RTX5500 it does a pretty solid job for my youngest and I have an excellent affordable upgrade path as I upgrade my big boxes or pick up discarded AM3 processors.

  • @autotropicplaybench1819
    @autotropicplaybench1819 Před 2 lety +3

    There might have been an unexpected issue with the mobo when they said NVME drives didn't work, because I'm literally rocking a second-hand Athlon 3000G build aside from my main rig (also with the Ryzen Wraith Stealth cooler) and it's running Windows 10 just fine with an NVME SSD on it (Teamgroup MP33 512GB) and no other drives.
    I think as long as you have realistic expectations given it is a dual core/quad thread CPU the Athlon 3000G can still do decent office work, heck even decent gaming for indie/older games (e.g. Bioshock non-remastered, the first Dishonored, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Ravenfield, Tomb Raider, Insurgency (not Sandstorm that is); and with customizing settings from LowSpecGamer and accepting low-res images, some new games like with Remedy's Control) and even some light video editing if you're really patient in render times, it should be something acceptable to use. Now do keep in mind I did get lucky to have this at $60 in the second-hand market; it's less appealing when sold as new for $100 in the Philippines.. but the iGPU market here for AMD is so bad, even at $100 the 3000G is still a deal I can reconcile with people getting given that finding second-hand Ryzen 2200G for anything less than $160 is difficult; and $60 is already a lot of money for many Filipinos, that we cannot just spend that money and call it a day (it can pay for almost a month of groceries; 1-3 months of electricity usage, etc.) just to get better iGPU performance.
    EDIT: If you do have a B450M mobo (in my case I got the B450M Mortar because I had an upgrade issue with my main rig that led to me replacing the mobo, thinking there might be an issue with the Mortar, but it's been running stable since so it seems it wasn't the cause), and can get it for reasonable prices in the second-hand market (or rarely even new), it's worth doing an overclock on the BIOS to see if the 3000G can meet at least 1500MHz iGPU clock speed and 3.7GHz or higher CPU clock speed. It can help with FPS gains with not much difference in temperature -- the highest I've seen for the CPU is at 70C, and typically more on resides at the 45-65C range depending on usage.

    • @autotropicplaybench1819
      @autotropicplaybench1819 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Lyron18th Good question, unfortunately I do not own the Plus II to test further. But from Asus' page and manual, they claim ONLY SATA M.2, and not NVME M.2 SSDs, are supported when using an Athlon APU. So you may be better off getting a 2.5" SATA SSD if available for cheaper for that mobo.
      Since for comparison, the B450M Mortar I had used with the Athlon 3000G shows on its manual that support for PCIe 3.0 x2 NVME SSDs aside from SATA SSDs were possible, hence mine working just fine. So I might have to correct myself about this being unexpected and rather this being a mobo-specific concern -- nothing prevents the Athlon 3000G by itself in recognizing NVME SSDs, but how the mobo has been made might

Price / performance can be tried. 200W PSU can run the whole system and there is no heating problem. The CPU (APU) consumes only 35w at total load. What else? 🙃

    I got the athlon 3000g and I paired it with a 6500xt.... It is now cpu limited in most taskes. Reviewers hated both of them, reviewers would hate that combo even more so with the athlon 3000g being limited to pcie 3 meaning the 6500xt would be running at worse. There are games where I hit both limits and I know I am because the fans for the 6500xt kick on, there is absolutely no universal way of getting FPS as amd has disabled all forms of gathering that with the drivers and a lot of the card seems software base limited, not hardware base. Meaning reviewers are complaining for the wrong reasons. LIke I can stream with the card despite not having a hardware encoder, they redesigned the amd software after the 6500xt to disable all forms of fps counters for the 6500xt and record/screaming even though you can with software like OBS that if there is no hardware encoding detected from the gpu it will off load it onto the cpu or the cpu's igpu's encoder. Which is what AMD's software should be doing is looking and seeing if there is a amd IGPU on the cpu dye and off loading taskes to it, yes they can do that if they really wanted to. This would have made the card more worth going after. I am not disapointed with my purchasing decission as the use case + budget this was litterally the best card within its range for its purpose that wasn't giving money to either a scalper or miner that caused most of the issues for gamers. Its use case is for my 6 year old son to play a few light weight games that the vega 3 struggled with even armed with 2gb dedicated I tried to increase but mobo limited to 2gb, I had 32gb within this build from spare parts for the ram. Half the parts were from a old rig I couldn't sell the parts online for much of a profit so I saw no reason to resell when I could reuse. Unforchently I had already sold both the cpu and the gpu I had. Luckily those I sold for more than I spent in total on those parts and the athlon 3000g was a little over $70 when I bought it and the 6500xt was like 2 weeks ago at $199.99 single fan. The single fan definitly does kick on when it reaches 60% usage or more and it is very audioable but they can not be heard over the volume my kid has his volume at plus screaming. The only other part I had to buy was a ssd, which I found out the hardware the athlon 3000g does not support any m.2 slots of any kind unless it is slotted in a pcie x4 or higher slot and most of that is being handled by the pcie card itself not the cpu. The athlon 3000g also only supports upto pcie 3.0 not gen 4 at all. So for $340 I got my son a bottom of the low end gaming pc. I could have saved $200 by not buying the 6500xt like the microcenter reps kept telling me to do and I ignored them, and I am glad I did. They kept trying to pressure me into buying only nvidia cards, which I am very against nvidia at this point, and used ones at that because they were trying to make some of their money back as they now had to sell them at a heavily loss. I don't know what they were thinking as the cards they were pushing were the 3060 and the 2060. The 2060 was used for $389.99 and their 3050's that they had instock were $419.99 and they had plenty of 6600. I had the microcenter rep litterally repeating the garbage that comes out of reviewers mouths about the 6700xt when my wife was looking at it, a card that I have. The rep was new and he was clearly showing his fanboyism and I even told him I use linux and the nvidia drivers for linux are terrible and the guy tried telling me linux is terrible. I even told him the reasoning why I didn't want to go higher, the main reason is I am pairing it with a athlon 3000g. The highest you want to go with a pairing like that is a 6600 non-xt and you don't want to go with a nvidia graphics card with it as the cards and cpu's tend to not play so friendly together especially with nvidia's drivers since 2020 which have been complete garbage for over a year with bugs every where like I mean every where. I had to deal with this first hand with a Msi twin cooler 7 gaming x 1660ti oced edition card I had where the screen would randomly flicker off for 1 second and then come back on crashing dozens and dozens of programs and games in the process of this event and it wasn't triggered by anything other than the drivers and this happened on 5 different hardware builds with several different nvidia cards such as a asus 1060ti paired with a amd ryzen 5 2600x. A 710 paired with some prebuilt my inlaws had which I gave them the 710 so they could stop using their terrible integrated graphics and have slightly faster loading times as they are old and complain about waiting even a fraction of a second going full blown karen on everything. and my wifes pc which was litterally the 3600x paired with a 1660ti, which then I replaced my 2600x with a 5600x and the 1060 with a 1660ti same issues fresh install, and replaced the power supply and mobo so I basically slowly replaced part by part and every pc was having the same exact issue and so were my friends pc's who would come to me anytime they had computer problems they thought it was a virus. I checked by downgrading drivers to pre-30 series and it all magically was fixed but then they couldn't play games without upgrading drivers.
    So I switched my 1660ti to a 6700xt and never had any issues. Not with blender, other than blender softlocking out radeon rendering engines infavor of promoting nvidia ones that came with blender, instead of promoting both. Any ways My son loves his 6500xt and his athlon 3000g.
