You think you had it bad? Try being a Transformers fan who doesn't live in the USA, worse yet, on a third world country; I have zero hope of getting exclusives and somehow it's cheaper for me to buy my toys from bloody Japan.

I feel that Siege could have gone even more cybertronian and fantastical with the alt modes. As it is they look like near future earth cars with the serial numbers filed off. So most of them feel a bit redundant when you have earthrise versions with their iconic alt modes.

The COMBAT system with standardized 5mm points. This allowed for so much play value and made Weaponizers/fossilizers a viable subline. Sure it meant that every toy had a bunch of holes in them, but it also meant a lot of backwards compatibility with anything that connected via 5mm pegs including anything that ever plugged into minicons. Armada toys can carry around WFC figures as if that was their function. Armada Unicron can carry the entire first years worth of G1 autobots on his rings

my favorite figure of the trilogy would have to be kingdom cyclonus. he looks good from EVERY angle and adore the fun transformation. its almost third party witchcraft! the thing i hate tho is missing the earthrise & seige ironhide / ratchet figures.. when i was in store i never saw any (likely due to DAMN SCALPERS) and the prices for those exceed the value of those figures.. last i checked, i saw a siege ironhide on ebay go for 150 dollars... its absurd... hopefully i can get the studio series ratchet and ironhide from the bumblebee movie. gotta move fast!

  • @wsc0tt
    @wsc0tt Před 2 lety +14

One thing I thought worked well was scale. Unlike previous lines, they were willing to break from established price-point sizes and replicate the varied heights we saw on screen. Ironhide and Trailbreaker, etc as large deluxes evened out Cliffjumper and Huffer, etc as small deluxes. Even in vehicle mode they scale well, with Huffer able to haul Prime's trailer and Cliffjumper still being a reasonably sized compact car. This, combined with the renewed focus on G1 accuracy, made it seem to me like they were giving us the definitive G1 update collection, faster and more affordable than Masterpiece. Now I just need another chance at some of those impossible-to-find exclusives....

  • @eonaon6914
    @eonaon6914 Před 2 lety +3

Im going to quibble with you on one thing, any exclusive that Target gets means you HAVE to get their in-store credit card to gain access to purchase those and is really a racket for target exclusives to gain money from credit card sign ups, and they do gain a decent amount per person on sign ups. That and it made getting the tetra jet seeker and Road Rage much more annoying than it should be.

Great video, would love to see more like this in future with both positives and negatives together.
I agree with all apart from the Micromasters because honestly I feel like one of the biggest reasons they flopped is actually the retailers
Not sure about other locales but here all of the stores literally only stock deluxe and up, it is so rare to see anything smaller for some reason
I don't understand because they are great pocketmoney toys. Yes true for us adult collectors they maybe arent as engaging (although to be fair I love them), but I can imagine they would be an important sector of the market for kids if they had been actually distributed!
The perfect sort of 'passing trade' toy like 'okay Jimmy pick something that's like a tenner and lets go' rather than being sought out, and the fact they are two packs makes them all the more fun because you only need one pack to have fun! Yknow?

  • @fakename5307
    @fakename5307 Před 2 lety +16

I felt they didn't go far enough with the cybertronian modes in Siege. That was what sort of bothered me about the remolds for Earthrise, it made the Siege figures feel like they were just placeholders until the "real" version came out, even if stuff like Ironhide/Ratchet were clearly just cobbled together from their Siege versions. I get they still have to be recognizable as those characters, but I just wanted to see other cybertronian modes that weren't just a car or truck with a few "alien" flourishes here and there. I almost bet they didn't do a cybertronian Wheeljack because they wouldn't have been able to reuse much for an earth mode version.

for some I liked it, for some I hated it.
take blastmaster and phazer. phazer works as a gun, it even have effect ports. blastmaster on his own really doesn't, and their combined form it's litterally "weapon mode upside down".
on the other hand, take flak and topshot, they are a thing of beuty and works both as combine weapon, as robot and as veicles (even if flak became a tankette).
there are 2 version of the targetmasters and 2 version of the weapon, the effect parts are most of the package worth, but the other, more unique ones like the meelee and rungare more than worthy. still 50/50 on the plankformers ones...

This was a fantastic look back at the War For Cybertron line now that it is coming to an end. Great work.
The thought of completing my collection with buying "optional" accessories such as Targetmasters was amazing. Adding figures to characters at retail would increase their price point and when many may not have wanted that it would've sucked. So I'm in the group that loved the Battlemaster concept. Disappointing to only have a few differing molds for the guns but at least their coloring was adjusted.
Bringing back Titan scaled figures mini components as Weaponizers was another choice that I am very fond of. Sixgun, Cog, FastTrack etc. were given more play value with the entire roster of Siege figures, and since Hasbro removed weapons from the titans, it was nice that the Weaponizers could compliment them.
Finally, the micromasters were something I wish Hasbro could've completed. We were given only half the teams in most cases and they neglected several other teams as well as only just starting to give us combiner teams. We'll never see a complete set of these characters and that's a shame. I personally loved owning a new release of this old gimmick. They should've done less with that combining weapon gimmick and more with making the figures fun and adding what another person posted in the comments about it having had "minicon" functionalities as well.

I agree on the shop exclusive. both on how good or bad they were, but also on the fact they just fuck up the shipping on an international level.
take italy, where gamestop DOES NOT sell action figures above what we consider core class, and doesn't sell transformers at all (they tried with the film powerchargers, it obviously flottped, then they added gigwatt that never went on sale, refunded the preorders, and placed it as terminally sold out), these figure are inaccessible, if not by international sellers and scalpers. and in this specific example, italy has been fucked over by hasbro release schedule since armada....

Funnily enough I think Siege Shockwave was the most complete Voyager+. The extra bits implemented perfectly with both modes and all the parts became a cool drone/mad science platform when not attached to Shockers, unlike Magnus and GUPrime where when not attached the armour bits just sit there, as a trailer in best case.
I don't really count Astrotrain as the same class, especially as he was an ER fig brought forward, but also because he didn't armour up or anything, he just had an ammo crate which only integrated in train mode, and guns. Some fine guns though. Still a fave figure of mine.

    Great sharing!
    1. A few more characters in their Cybertronian forms would've been sweet (we honestly have ample bots with Earthian alt modes).
    2. Also grouping things in 'mixed multipacks' that would have made more sense being packaged with their own kind/genre (like the Powerdashers or Spinister's duo of Targetmasters for instance) would've been ideal.
    3. Great toys like Spinister & Turbomaster Rotorstorm were completely destroyed by the microcracking on their legs (dual cockpits) due to the high stress required to secure and maintain/lock their transformation in vehicle mode (best NEVER to transform them as this type of transparent plastic is of the cheap, fast-cracking variety and will eventually break under the stress of this bad design choice)! [The haunting memories of Springer, Tracks (Kingdom 'Cracks') & Mirage will forevermore bear the stigma of 'shoddy see-thru plastic quality' for this trilogy, in spite of its manifold successes in other regards.]
    4. Those tiny 'plank' robots are the most unimaginative alt modes of the lot; ironically leaving a lot to our imagination, yet obviously uninspired to begin with.
    5. The QC has been a nightmare spread throughout the trilogy, affecting multifarious products worldwide, with so many toys arriving broken right out of the packaging even. The very line-wide concept of 5-mm compatibility is also non-uniform, with some pegs/ports being too tight or loose, sometimes even on the very same figure itself! BIG FAIL!
    6. Why is Buzzsaw missing? Where is Sunstorm? Why are only/mostly 2 characters from an original team of 4 (or more) members released in the new Micromaster assortments? Where are the switchable Mutant/Battle/BioCombat heads for selected Beast Wars characters (particularly T-Wrecks per the comics & ori toy)? Incomplete things like this drag the entire trilogy down (by being a near miss instead of a home run).

I wanted Siege Optimus Prime's Cybertronian alt mode to resemble the tank mode that he had in G1 (Marvel issue 1). Or even the Cybertronian tanker truck mode that he had in his youth (Underbase Saga). It could then finally be repainted as Fusion, who's never had a toy before (but sacrificed himself to ensure that Bluestreak's mission would succeed).
I think that that battle damage paint didn't work.
Ultra Magnus worked well as a Voyager plus, but yeah, not the others.

    Worked:
    Siege figures had slick transformations
    They had great weapons
They were damn poseable(I don't think posing is the most important part of a transformers figure though, just look at g1)
Micromasters were really cool and their system was great
Awesome space-ey aesthetic of Siege figures
    Failed
    Horrendous plastic
    Use of pinned hinges
Overreliance on g1 and beast wars and the "Hey remember the 80s" atmosphere
Less detailed vehicle modes that rolled like donkey crap
Fans blindly obssessing over anything this line threw at them(This is more on the fans though)

  • @shadowscribe
    @shadowscribe Před 2 lety

The voyager+ concept almost worked. You could see the logic in an across the room view. Unlike Takara, which had no qualms pricing more when needed, plussing a voyager and adding to warrant value is legit solution!
In practice it was dicey. Optimus was okay, but he had a trailer that's equal parts extra and necessary. If he came with his axe and Roller, I would've called him feature complete. Rodimus was obviously the best, folding more play into the trailer, but still relying on a recognizable add-on like Optimus.
Without a trailer to fall back on, Astrotrain was an absolute fail that should've just been bigger. No one was fooled by the literally tacked on box of weapons.
That said, I will die on the hill that Shockwave got it right. Thoroughly integrating the extras to plus both modes into a dreadnaught and ye olde brute mode was a great idea that *worked*

The thing I liked the most were the weaponizers, because I really like combinations, specially if they encourage you to make ones of your own. I wish they added a way to make chest plates and some form of compatibility with titan masters, to add more variety in the combinations.
I also really liked the new Beast Wars characters and fossilizers, and the fact that they went with more real life-accurate beast modes with the formers rather than go show accurate (I don't get the people saying that a scorpion with eyebrows is better than the one we got that actually looks like an actual scorpion, specially since the masterpiece line is already doing the show-accurate-as-they-can-be figures).
Other things I liked but I had some problems with were: the idea of the cybertronian versions, I would've liked more interesting alt modes, but I guess that there was not much they could work with, since most of them were just pretools of future earth rise figures; the attempt at maintaining the scale between characters, although I don't like the way it was handled (Earthrise Prime, for example, just has a shitty looking trailer to justify the price point, and is not even big enough to look good when it's in trailer mode); and the core class figures, specially the ones like Prime, Megatron, Soundwave and Starscream, because it's an easier way to get the main characters, they don't take that much space, it's easier to make cool dioramas with them, and are good figures, albeit with a few hiccups (like Soundwave's tape recorder mode), not as articulated as their larger counterparts, and don't have much compatibility with other figures to really exploit their play value (just the titan class ark and not much else).

My top 10 WFC Trilogy figures (plus Netflix figures):
    1. Siege Optimus Prime (The gold standard for mainline Optimus Prime figures)
    2. Earthrise/Netflix Soundwave (Taking a great figure and making it better)
    3. Kingdom Cyclonus (A figure that should have been in Studio Series 86, that's how good it was)
    4. Siege Mirage (My favorite 84 Autobot, besides Optimus)
    5. Kingdom Megatron (Beast Wars)/Kingdom Galvatron (G1) (Couldn't decide. Both great figures)
    6. Siege/Earthrise Astrotrain (No matter what line he was in, he was great)
    7. Earthrise Wheeljack (Underrated)
    8. Siege Ironhide (Finally, Ironhide got a good mainline toy)
    9. Siege Impactor (Finally, a mass market Impactor figure. Won by a fan vote, no less.)
    10. Earthrise Starscream (Upscaling the Classics Seeker mold was a brilliant move)
Ones I wished I had gotten:
Siege: Rung (The only Battlemaster I really wanted), Ratchet, and Jetfire
Earthrise: Smokescreen, Runabout/Runamuck, Sunstreaker, Trailbreaker, Thrust, Thundercracker/Skywarp 2-Pack, Ramjet/Dirge 2-Pack, Sky Lynx, and the Quintesson Judge
Kingdom: Inferno (G1) and Dinobot (The only Beast Wars character I missed out on)
The WFC Trilogy was one of the best Transformers lines ever. Not perfect, but no Transformers line is (even Masterpiece figures have their flaws). Some of the out there decisions they made (A Voyager Class Quintesson Judge, A Commander Class Sky Lynx, updated Beast Wars characters) showed the ambition they had with this line. Looking forward to Legacy. Good video, by the way.

We have so many opposite views while some matching up. First the bads smaller sizes higher prices and horrendous qc issues and I hated the battle damage paint with some having digital printed on battle damage apeface springer and the tt new starscream announced oppose to adding real paint apps to figures. Then we have issues with the clear plastic on joints thay love to break jazz prowl er ironhide being key molds. The blast effects also suffer from softening agent aka a acid leaches over time and causes the 2 plastic types to bond so the blast effect or mini figs like ghosts get stuck and to remove them actually causes the 3mm peg to break they attach too so never leave them on your figure unless you wnat to always stay there. I love the micromasters and would of loved actual bases for them and entire reissues of them like the star saber mold we got a reissue instead of getting the other 2 figures from that team. The mm combine modes are oddly suggestive in a adult kinda way.... ya aquard. The combine modes onky hurt the figures and some have massive stability issues. I do like they maintained the same scale and attempted to add some posability but they could of used some liberties and made better figures as the top priority. For me the fozzilizers I have no interest in them the off colors different sides and a combine head just feels lazy like they intended to have have a combined mode and could not figure it out and just shipped out what they had done so far. The leader class is over priced voyagers with often random junk heck the main body of shockwave is as big as a classics cyclonus a deluxe at how many times the price ya I do feel ripped off. Then all the hard to get exclusives that often come with scalper tax ugh. The er seekers are more or less upscaled 06 deluxe with a few changes I have alot of the older stuff and honestly I am okay with the deluxe ones so avoiding that all saved me headaches and alot of money. Hasbro during this will keep doing this because on the whole producing less cutting back on costs like quality paint apps and size while charging more hasbro saw a profit but it has alienated fans that can not afford to buy a few toys, you know thungs ment for little kids and it's not like anyone here has their paycheck doubled in the past year working the same job but the prices of the toys has more then double yes some is to do to inflation others amazon oddly enough (due to their seller fees and market denial if you offer better prices thru other means) but in the end the fans are being well well over charged while hasbro toes it's all about the fans and trust me they have nothing good to say about the fans at the company in fact it's more a insult when refenced, ya they have alot of distance regarding the fans that buy their products and keep the company afloat. Please feel free to disprove me on any of what I said above because it's it's a sad reality of the Fandom right now and I do hope things change. As for the new shows and movies coming out.... they are not going to help the brand from what I see not at all its going to be motu remake/reboot take 2 robot version.

i say the "Voyager+" can work *if* done right, like, having all the budget of a higher class can really help add details to a toy that wouldnt be in the budget at the lower class, the best example is ER optimus, who thanks to that High-ass budget, has a brilliant transformation, functioning wrists and fingers, as well as a matrix and trailer accessories
Now, siege Astrotrain, I say some of that extra budget helped in making a good triple changer but like, I'd rather they'd cut the guns in favour of adding more to the mold, like *WRIST SWIVELS*, or even just making the toy a lil bit bigger as a whole, weren't people saying its too small?

Siege has been the best line ever to feature Cybertronian alt modes and it sucks that they didn't do more characters. The figures based on the FOC and WFC games were not very good. Some of the designs were but most just hit the mark, especially Megatron and the Bruticus figures. The only issue I have with Siege is the same things Hasbro has with most of their figures and those are hollow plastic parts and lack of accessories. I'm willing to pay more for better quality figures. I think they do this to give them a reason to do better versions later so they aren't running out of characters to do, especially with main characters.

Ok my list of 5 things that worked and 5 things that didn't work...
    Didn't work...
    1. Cybertronian modes: There are a few exceptions the Seekers were really good but then you have toys like Sideswipe who already just looks like his Earth mode anyway. I loved the WfC/FoC designs, those looked very alien while still looking like the characters. War Within also did this really well. But this series had the most lazy "Cybertronian" modes I have ever seen. Most of them were just Earth modes with some tech detail added to the molding.
    2. The price hike... even when they had good figures I liked I passed on most of them cause the Prices have gotten so high they aren't worth the retail prices anymore.
    3. The Weaponizers/Modulators, the idea of Transformers is to actually be able to TRANSFORM the figure. I don't mind taking them apart to armor up other figures but to just go from vehicle to robot should not require partsforming.
    4. Leader class Astrotrain... I don't mind the others but I do agree Astrotrain didn't work.
    5. Kingdom: For a line that was suppose to be about Beast Wars we ended up with figures that were clearly intended for Seige and Earthrise mixed in as well. And then they never ever finished the Beast Wars cast in the main line. Terrorsaur ended up an exclusive, Tarantulas and Inferno won't even be out till legacy gets here and who knows if they'll even be in the same styal to fit in with the othe Kingdom Predacons. And then we have designs that showed up in promotional art that never even got toys. And worst of all the Fossilizers have no official way to interact with the beast figures since only Autobots and Decepticons actually have ports to use them.
    5 things that worked...
    1. The few Cybertronian modes that actually look good. Seekers, Ironhide/Ratchet, Soundwave, Shockwave, Bumblebee (who came out in the wrong toy line) the rest were terrible.
    2. I actually liked the Battlemasters mostly because it let me get Hot Rod's Targetmaster without having to buy an entirely new Hot Rod mold.
    3. The Fossilizers... while the whole partsforming thing didn't work for Weaponizers and Modulators it does work for Fossilizers. I think because they have that fossile asthetic it makes more sense that they would come apart like that. And they don't look like like traditional Transformers so I don't have an issue with them not transforming properly.
    4. Astrotrain... while he doesn't work as a leader he does work as Astrotrain. It's the first time he's been given his proper train mode since G1. The previous attempts made him a bullet train or a space train but this is the first really good updated figure that actually looks like he's suppose to.
    5. Kingdom: While it wasn't perfect it was really good to get some modern takes on the season 1 Beast Wars cast. I don't think there was really a bad mold in the bunch. I would have gotten more of them but unfortunantly this was right around the same time that the Price hike kept me away from most of the toy line which happens to be my favorite toy line in the trilogy. You know how many times I was standing in Wal Mart arguing with myself about buying Kingdom figures... pretty much every damn time I was in there. Only cracked when I found Primal and Paleotrex together. If I was rich and had money to throw around I'd buy every beast mold that came out of that line. I wasn't really happy with the colors on Cheetor in his first release but the repaint fixed that. Same with Rattrap. Those were the only two I was really iffy on and it's just the original paint jobs I didn't like. Also Waspinator cause they barely changed anything from the thrilling 30 release and I don't think a new mold was needed but again I actually wouldn't mind picking up the Buzzsaw version. So I'd still end up with every beast mold at some point. But that's if I could actually afford all that... which I can't... so it ain't happening. I'm not even sure if I'll finish the Fossilizers so I can build more with them... I found a great deal for the full set on E Bay but someone outbid me and I wasn't willing to go any higher.

I actually like Voyager+ I liked the extra guns and thought that Shockwave turning into a Musai/ Yamato ship was dope as shit.

The problem with the micro masters was not the size or the engineering it was the solidity of them and the feel mine all fell apart when they were handled and we're so thin and didn't feel good they definitely needed thicker stronger plastic
