Seriously. Thank you TJ for giving us all of this amazing content! This dude has entertained and educated us for over a decade now, and he deserves every bit of recognition for it. It's also been really cool to watch his style evolve and become more streamlined over time. His early stuff was fantastic, but this streak he's been on lately is super inspiring. In several cases, the text was as bad as the selections themselves. The repeated criticism against Scourge was that the author found the character design to be too spooky. The only criticism against Windblade was that her Generations figure may be the "ugliest" of her "mediocre" toys. The Nike criticisms came down them being expensive and not being wearable shoes. Kup's a weird case, because the knock that he looks cheap and plastic-y compared to other G1 toys comes entirely from his dubious truck design, with his robot mode looking pretty good (and being pretty solid).

Ironically, the G1 vans being so "bad" is part of why I want them properly updated. Not Earthrise or some fabled new Voyager or Evergreen mold update, oh no, I want an update that looks EXACTLY like the original toy, weird windshield face on a big battle sled and all. Because that's a cool look and really might as well be updated as a new Legacy character duo "Armorhide and Swivel" given how little the Sunbow designs look like them anyway.

The fuzors were a pretty cool, if albeit very experimental gimmick from Beast Wars, and for what it's worth, I personally thought that even the worst of them (which is most commonly sighted as being Injector, who I still have a weird soft spot for) were cool toys. I remember owning all 10 of them as a kid, and I always thought they were neat simply because they were a mishmash of 2 different animals, which although it was debatably hit or miss was still an interesting idea overall, and Airhammer had one of the cooler designs out of the group (Bantor would be my personal pick for the worst one out of the Maximals).

The thing that modern folks completely miss about Pretenders is that back in the 80s they were perfect for Masters of The Universe crossovers with Transformers. Chainclaw and Catilla were perfect with He Man as Battle cat like static figures. So much so I think the whole idea of Pretenders was so kids could do that crossover.

@@spinyjustspiny3289 Very true, thanks for pointing that out. I've never had it happen to any of my own figures, but I've seen some CZcams clips of older toys doing just what you described.
I feel like springs can work for firing missile launchers and things of that sort (so long as you don't store the missile in the launcher for too long), but most of the other spring-loaded gimmicks I've seen are pretty unnecessary and often make figures worse in the long run. Gimmicks on transformers toys can be fun, but they often come at a cost to the figure's overall quality.

One rule of thumb I have regarding ANY hobby I'm in is not to trust any sort of listicle that is thrown up by sites who really aren't very interested IN the hobby, but getting the click traffic via their articles having targeted keywords in them and showing up at the top of searches.
I've learned from that there will be a lot of bias but a lot of misunderstanding of the series from an outsider looking in who might not get the reason for choices that happened and they boil it down to 'lol this looks stupid but all of it is stupid'.

22:31. I completely agree. Fans bash on Ironhide/Ratchet without knowing why they look like this. Most of the G1 toys were completely removed from their original context, since they were imported from a completely different toyline in Japan. Ironhide/Ratchet were derived from the Diaclone toyline, in which the robots are non-sentient piloted mechas. From that perspective, this mold made sense. It was Hasbro that turned them into something they were not.

2:12 Oh god, we're barely into this and I'm already raging. WHAT INHUMAN HEARTLESS MONSTER DOESN'T HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR THE FOOD CHANGEABLES!?
Cloudburst - At least it's one of the Pretender inner robots that decently looks like a vehicle.
Nike Convoy - Agreed. That towering shoulder kibble is just lazy.
Injector - I can understand the hate, but I love the sculpting on the fish head and Tiki mask robot face.
AIR HAMMER IS PRECIOUS AND FUN!!!
Monstructor - Dunno. Young me certainly would have liked a brightly-colored tiny combiner
Wheelie - All the criticisms are valid, but he was one of my first TFs ever so I am fiercely protective of him. And how could you hate that car mode?
Terragator - Good beast mode, but yeah, that robot mode is positively anorexic.
BM Cheetor - That one is a mess, yeah. And transforming him's a pain due to joints being either scary tight or too floppy.
Scourge - I think the overcomplicated look works for him. Terrible robot mode legs though. His worst problem by far is chrome flake.
Hammerstrike only deserves to be here because he is one of the most fragile non-GPS toys I've ever owned. So many of his pieces are cracking.
    Airachnid - yes
Pretender Beasts - ALL of them? As in, Carnivac is in there!? [friends hold me back from starting a fistfight]
Kup - He's this high up the list!? WHAT!? WHY!?
Topspin - He's like the Macarena. People only dislike him because he's so oversaturated. And people like him more than Twin Twist, so WTF?
Windblade - Looked great; scary to transform due to flimsiness
Savage Noble - I have really tried to like this toy. Nah. He's just an oddity with bad legs.
    BM Silverbolt - yes
BM McDonald's toys - NO. They did their best, they're show-accurate, and that's a MUCH better Nightscream than the Hasbro toy.
Ironhide - It is kind of terrible if you want it to be an autonomous robot. As a mech suit, he's fine. As a van he's adorable.
...wait, that means they chose the Mega Beast Machines Cheetor instead of the Supreme!? TRIPLE INFERNO HELL NO!!!

My rules for a worst Transformers toys list:
    1. Mainline toys only. No gimmick lines, no Kre-O, no Built to Rule, and _no fast food toys!_
    2. If the play pattern is your big problem, pick a _single_ representative of the play pattern
    3. No toys whose original release wasn't in the Transformers brand
    4. No entries based on the your thoughts on the _character,_ only the _toy_

A couple of thoughts for this list:
Not really sure why those person picked so many fuzors. I get it's unconventional but when I first saw them I thought it was awesome. But if you are going to pick one fuzor, it shouldn't be airhammer, terrogator, or even injector, it should be buzzclaw, because not only is he literally just a mantis with lizard legs so he's barely a fuzor, 95% of the alt mode just comes off to make the most generic robot mode on the planet, not to mention any of the detailing is lost because the entire figure is made of cheap looking clear plastic.
I'm not sure how to feel about both injector and beast machines cheetor being on the list considering they're my guilty pleasures in the beast eras, honestly I don't think it's as nearly as bad as everyone says. For beast machines the silhouette is ready accurate, and I think the head looks infinitely cooler than he does on the show. Sure if you don't know that you have to have the robot head tilted a certain way while transforming it, it can be incredibly annoying to transform, but once you learn how to do it, there's nothing really that bad with it outside of some poorly placed clear plastic spots like the hips and waist.
I find it kind of annoying that this person picked on the beast machines ones considering they easily have the most complexity and shape out of all of the transformer McDonalds toys, I think armada is easily the worst of the group (also McDonald's toys are actually a buck, but on the same note who cares?)
Really surprised that they did not include a single animorph on this list because they're all bad enough to be on here except for any of the alien ones like the ax scorpion or either of the visser threes.
I definitely agree that silverbolt is atrocious but I don't think it's unsalvageable. If they made the color scheme better like making it silver with a little bit of purple, made it a lot bigger, add a couple of quality of life changes like having the wings turned into a Cape instead of being an ugly weapon, make the alt mode officially a Gryphon, and change the head from a dumbass snot goblin into a knight mask, it would have been a really cool toy.

Clearly put together to fulfill a quota by someone who has no passion for or interest in the topic at hand. These kinds of click-fodder, redundant lists are fundamentally flawed and full of enough filler to make animal feed blush. The newest figure on this list is from eight years ago, and there's _somehow_ no Unicron Trilogy representation on a list of "Transformers toys that shouldn't exist." To me some of the worst was those ones from the end of the Prime Beast Hunters toyline where they were just up-scaling the Cyberverse figures. And I do have a reason; since I was a kid I've seen up-scaled KOs of legends sized figures or Mini-Cons in pound shops for years, even bought a few. And here Hasbro were selling pretty much the same thing for a full deluxe or voyager pricepoint. I mean yes, some of the cheapness will be the materials used that'll make them likely to break faster than the ones Hasbro did (although, at least in my experience, the hasbro figures aren't exactly bringing the A game in that department) but part of it is simple; the Legends/Cyberverse figures sell because they're cheap and you can fit a dozen in your pockets so you could get a decent sized battle's worth for prey cheap and you'd have space in your bags where you'd only have room for one or two deluxes. Other than that the designs are rubbish and the transformations overly simplistic; increase the price and make them bigger and you strip away the only real good parts of those molds, particularly because, while not up to the standards of First Edition, the Prime toyline was pretty good up to then.

I sorta get why Ironhide was the way it was, or just why G1 designs were all over the place in general. I think that in most cases, they did a great job integrating the designs of this assemblage of products into one cohesive toy line, and turning them into distinct characters for a tv show... but the man doesn't have a head. Maybe thats more a failure of the tv show, maybe Ironhide should have just had a 2d face projected on the wind screen, maybe he could have been a mech for the human characters to pilot. But a kid buying a toy of a character that clearly has a head it the show only to find that its decapitated, kind of hilarious, kind of more than just a simple animation inaccuracy, still a fun toy, still kind of dumb.

I will give them credit for one thing... At least the majority of their list are actual Transformers. Or at least they were marketed as Transformers in the case of McDonald's changables, they're essentially knock off Transformers. And it's the only product on the list that is not actually Hasbro or Takara. I have seen other similar lists that have included Voltron, Power Rangers, and whatever random robot toys they could find and insist that they were all Transformers. In some cases they'd include toys that don't even transform which would be fine if they were actually talking about Action Masters but when they're talking about non-transforming robots that were never suppose to transform because they were never part of Transformers in the first place that's just dumb.
That said... I don't really like the Pretenders either but I would of lumped them all together into one entry. Same with the shoes. Ironhide, I would put him at the bottom of the list or as an honorable mention but he wouldn't be number 1. I mean yes, it's a terrible figure but it's a terrible figure in hindsight with his depiction in the cartoon. Realizing that the toy actually came first and that the animation model was adapted from that, it's actually not that bad when you realize that. There are figures who were designed AFTER the animation model that look nothing like the animation model that are way worse than Ironhide. At least Ironhide has an excuse for why he looks that way. I still consider him a bad toy but not the number 1 on my list level of bad.

When I go to the swap meet on weekends, I see a lot of loose Transformers figures that are deserving to be there. I see like 1-step Changers, Happy Meal toys, those soap bottle like toys, and other general stuff that really would get the interest of collectors. But then I see like various of figures from Cybertron, Generations, and Studio Series for so cheap that make me wonder if people really know the value of them. Like, do someone really believe that a Voyager Vector Prime is worth as much as a single Power Core Combiner leg?? Their perspective on these figures are strange but I really shouldn't be complaining as I'm able to easily score some good figures! ;)

I love TM2 Scourge. I've always loved it. In a time when I wasn't buying Transformers, it's one that I picked up. I wish every day that Hasbro or a third party does a new version of him. Just, make all of that work better in the process.
Savage/Noble is another one I wish would get a new figure. If Hasbro does it then it'd have to be a leader class or so just to accommodate a good transformation and wings. With no gimmick, the chest can be used to house the opposite mode's head and/or other things. The conflicting colors can be recreated from panels that swap around similar to some of those third party magic figures like Lockdown and AOE Galvatron. Some designers out there can do some crazy stuff lately. The wings can still partsform but also still be usable in both modes.
I would love a retool of Kingdom Airazor that turns into Air Hammer even if he doesn't have the tail and jaw hands. Could always make them detachable and be used as weapons instead of just making them the arms outright.
I just said the other day that even Wheelie needs love. Which he's getting between the DNA figure and the rumored Studio Series 86 figure.
I also really like Gekisoumaru, Hishoumaru and Sensuimaru. They have so many flaws but I enjoy them. Kenzan, Jinbu and Ganoh don't quite work as well for me though. Maybe because I like beast formers more than vehicles as they're more interesting sometimes. Optimus is somewhere in the middle. That "dragon" mode just doesn't work for me no matter how much I try to fix it.
Actually I like Hishoumaru so much I have four of him. One to combine with Gekisoumaru and Sensuimaru and the other three to combine together into one. I don't have extras of the others to really test it but I'm fairly certain that Hishoumaru's the only one who can combine with himself in a meaningful way. I just pretend that he's a triocon or something. I also have my own fan mode for the bird mode too. I got everyone except for Optimus a while back for around $18-$22 each new back when Toyrus overseas were stocked with them still even years later. I think I've even seen some recent toy hunts with them still on shelves. Optimus was a lucky Ebay listing that was pretty cheap for him comparatively.

I literally facepalmed after seeing Ironhide. Ironhide and Ratchet didn’t have heads, because they were originally meant to be mechs and Hasbro and Takara didn’t want to try to retool them to have proper heads and that is understandable. The engineering for that would be around for decades! If I could go back to the 80’s and give Hasbro and Takara the molds for those 3rd party heads that came out awhile back I would have done so. The proportions would still be weird but at least those two would be spared the undue flack that they get.

What I don't get is the lack of variety in this list. In a nutshell, it's just a bunch of Pretenders, Fusors, Beast Machines lineup, some G1, and then a handful of "fillers." Furthermore, why was the G1 Ironhide toy singled out and the G1 Rachet excluded when they are more or less the same toy, just recolored? It really gives it away that the author just went to google images, typed "Weird Transformers toys," then made the article from there.

G1 IRONHIDE AT NUMBER 1? Much as I never liked this toy when I was a kid... Just personal preference... THERE IS A REASON HE IS TEH WAY HE IS - Which is why he and I believe it was teh G1 Rachet should NEVER be on a list like this!
We as fans bought the toys because of the CARTOON... But the Animators redesigned Rachet and Ironhide so their toys LOOKED NOTING LIKE THE CARTOON! That was NOT the Toys fault, That was the fault of the Cartoon!
And honestly, Knowing these days which toyline they came from... I actually ADORE the idea and style! Had they had little Microfigure Pilots - I WOULD HAVE BEEN ALL IN! (Jesus, Even as a kid before I knew the Origins of the line, I always thought having a Microfigure Pilot for Optimus and Thrust would have been so damn cool! The guy literally did nothing but harm the bots around him for the sake of his own ego. Even egomaniacs like Galvatron, even monsters like Tarn, and even despots like Megatron all had at least one idea larger than themselves they believed in, one other being they cared for. Not Getaway.
