Transformers has a lot of characters that become other characters when they join together, so let's put almost all of them together and see who does it best.
In a large mixing bowl, stir flours and salt together. In a small bowl mix sourdough starter and water together. Pour the starter water into the flour bowl and mix with a fork until flour is fully incorporated. Let rest 15 minutes. Stretch the dough, right in the bowl. See video. Repeat 15 minutes later. Cover and let rest on the kitchen counter overnight for 8-14 hours. ( 65-70 F) In the morning, stretch, fold and shape (2nd video) Place in a parchment-lined bowl, let rise 1 hour in the refrigerator while the oven preheats. Score. Bake 35 minutes!

Abominus has always been my favorite combiner. The idea of the Terrorcons being assets that the Quintessons are merely lending to galvatron was always a cool idea to me. Their monster modes are also very wacky and cool. Who know we would ever get an Orthrus as an altmode, when everything before was something that existed in real life, and at that usually a licensed vehicle.
Bruticus, Landfill, and Safeguard are my three faves. In all fairness I never got to see Abominus

Not to mention that the original toy had a good load of articulation for the time due to Hun-Gurr being so posable for his transformation.
It's a shame the terrorcon combiner abominus wasn't on the list, would have loved to hear your thoughts on it.

@@gavinerickson9392 if your meaning the Armada Jet Optimus with Overload combination. That's not a combiner. Now if you mean the CW Optimus Maximus/Omega Prime (Nova Prime torso basically) then ya I agree, should've been on the list

@@transformnroll2752 If you put two of more guys together to make a different guy, that's probably a combiner, and if powercore combiners count, everyone does: Armada Optimus, Energon Optimus, and even Animated Jetstorm.
My favorite is Bruticus. The Combaticons are all amazing characters (especially Swindle) and Bruticus is just such a menace. Also I got to voice him
I really like Megatronia's colour scheme more than Victorion's
I think combiner wars helped bring some variety to the stunticons. Dragstrip is the hammerhead looking one, breakdown is white with the recognizable red stripe and has the wide flat front, dead end has the rounded edge, offroad is the pickup truck with red windows, and motor master is a big friccin truck.
Over the years Rail Racer has become one of my favorite combiners toy wise. I would love an MP scaled set someday where each of the bots are 12 inches tall, they'd be in scale with the original Fire Convoy figure that way that's for sure.
I dunno whether I appreciate or despise the fact that no one has *ever* attempted a new Landcross. Takara or Hasbro hasn't done anything, nothing 3P for some reason, the original toy is rare asf, and yet it's such a good idea. It can really do for an update with the right engineering and kibble management.
I think that's the biggest issue, which is engineering. It's the Energon gimmick but then they ALL have to combine. Would love to see a 3P try and do it better but I'm not sure there would be enough of a market for them unfortunately. I'm in the same boat as you, I want a Landcross, it would be awesome!
I'm surprised they haven't done an updated Monstructor (or Dinoking for that matter) yet. Let's face it, the original two combiners are a joke. I bet hos disappointed Japanese kids were disappointed when they got a Dinoking figure and realized that he's the size of a deluxe class figure and wouldn't fair well against Star Saber or any of the other combiner robots. Judging by how big the two characters are they would've been voyager sized like the Constructcions and Predacons. Knowing Hasbro, they would've probably gone for a IDW accurate head than the G1 toy for Monstructor. And of course Takara repainting him as Dinoking is obvious but they would've retooled the head for anime accuracy.

I love volcanicus! dinobots have always been my favorites so having a combiner for them makes me happy. rail racer is probably my favorite combiner even to this day, I always wanted the full set when I was younger but all I had was midnight express...which is arguably the worst one of the three, I guess that's just the unfortunate side effect of being a pair of pants xD

I’m not about to sing praise on Grand Galvatron, but you could kinda maybe force a link: each of them would have a grudge against Megatron.
Ghost Starscream was killed by Galvatron and was, well, Starscream. Armada Thrust wasn’t saved from being crushed, with Galvatron taunting him as he died.
Prime Breakdown’s body was stolen by Silas, and Megatron actually allowed Silas a trial run in the Decepticons, in spite of Breakdown’s loyalty and the fact that Knockout was against it.
As for Roller, I don’t know, he and the platform were destroyed by Megatron in the third part of the G1 pilot? He’s the weak link here. As for Cyclonus, he was killed by a Megatron Clone and was Galvatron’s punching bag.
Galvatron II, meanwhile, was of course in a bit of was war with Megatron in the marvel comics. In a way Grand Galvatron is a testament to the abuse and betrayal one will receive as a follower or partner to Megatron.

Probably the most solid thing you could come up with to link them. Although, grudge against Megatron doesn't exactly sound like a unifying theme for a combiner, it's better than nothing
Wonder how you'd rank other combiners Takara designed like the Brave Series ones since RID2001 combiners very much felt like they were from the Brave Series since every Brave has had a triple combination and one that has X amount... which led to Shadowmaru and Advenger to stick out like a sore thumb by not being combiners but filled in the role in the initial trio of Braves. Brave Combiners in my opinion end up stronger than the majority of transformers combiners by not being body and limbs, maybe a 6th will be there either to fill out the body or something, meanwhile that kind of formula was used once for Thunder Baron who had the unique ability to combine into a singular vehicle as well which is something I wish transformers would try to do more often
kinda wish the combiners from the 2000's were here, safeguard, various optimus combiners, the times megatron got to do some combining

My favorite combiner character is Bruticus. Love the character and the team that makes him up. Predaking is a very close second.
Combiner Wars Skyreign and Optimus Maximus would have been interesting for this list as well as Armada Perceptor ( 3 minicons)

Also, Magnaboss’s Prowl is indeed the original Prowl in a new form. Same goes for Silverbolt and Ironhide.
Cyberverse volcanicus has a great design when it comes to what bots make what limbs. Unfortunately the Cyberverse toyline couldn't realize it well.
I get your issue with the stunticons and aerialbots, but their introduction was the first transformers episode I ever saw so I am a little biased towards them. My favorite combiner otherwise is Defensor so I greatly approve of this list even if I think you are being too hard on Volcanicus.

This isn't too dissimilar from how I'd rank them. One thing I've noticed: when you aren't scripted, you tend to repeat yourself a lot. You tend to repeat yourself. A lot.

Really odd that whoever made this excluded Megatronia, who imo is a far, faaaaar superior use of the Victorion set than what it’s supposed to be, and Abominus, one of the classic original G1 combiners. That aside it’s a solid list but I feel what each combiner was being judge on was fast and loose. Was it about character design? Toy design? The actual character as depicted in fiction? Just felt inconsistent how everyone was being judged imo
Also saying SS Devastator “didn’t really work” is severely under selling the set for what it accomplishes as a 8-member set of fully functional, individual bots that were all good figures on their own that still managed to form a really cool and imposing Devastator that makes a great centerpiece for any movie-verse collection

I would love to see Lio Kaiser brought to the legacy line and you also forgot the combiners from Transformers Go.
I still stand by saying that if they really wanted to do a Dinobot combiner, they should have done Volcanicus as the "Titan" combiner for POTP over Predaking, that way they could have given it the actual size and scale a Dinobot combiner deserves and not what we actually ended up with.
The core of Bruticus Maximus was actually Barricade, back before they found his iconic characterization from the films as an evil cop car, much like how they included mad old man helicopter Bulkhead before animated made the version we know and love.
Also since he wasn't in there, how low would you put the Beast? Is there a level below Flea Market?

Unless I missed it, I didn't see either of the Perceptor combiners. I am curious of his opinion on them. And also the Minicon toy from Thrilling 30.
There is one team I wish was on here, the Minicon Assault Team! Remember those guys? 3 minicons who come together to form a single deluxe sized robot! That was actually the first combiner I ever owned, when I was still relatively fresh to collecting transformers and it seemed like a way to experience the combining gimmick at a low price point. Of course the final incentive for me to get it was the fact that the helicopter minicon was female, making her the first official female transformer in the Generations line (seriously, lol)

Devestator is the best and only in my eyes.
I got the NA Ruination at a peddlers mall , brand new each piece, put the bruticus decals on it because it is very plain. I also nabbed a complete God Neptune in excellent condition.
The Last Knight also has combiners.

There’s a lore reason for Cyclonus having the Galvatron combiner mode: after the events of The Headmasters, Cyclonus came to be merged with the spark of Galvatron II from the Marvel G1 Comics, having crossed over into the Japanese G1 cartoon universe

The Energon Combiners were best served by forgoing the official mode and instead going for limb symmetry.
They’re all really not great, though Bruticus Maximus averages out to decent.

Funny enough, after all these years as a Transformers collector (since the Armada days), I just have 3 combiners overall: Armada Perceptor, Classics Superion and RotF legend class Jet Optimus. Never had the chance to get any other, because it was a nightmare finding all the components and buying them. I always liked Bruticus the best, and hoped to get the Combiner Wars one, but I only got to see CW Onslaught in retail.
And yes, Hasbro should reissue at least BW ultra Silverbolt on its own, I just know they are not going to do so.

I really like victorion she should at least be the retail catagory cause as a toy shes good, I dont think its really fair to count her color scheme so heavily against her I mean I like it its an acquired taste but its still nice and outside of the box
While i like that Hasbro is giving us a new Menasor this year, i would have preferred if they gave us one that we don't have yet in the modern age. I think Road Caesar or Monstructor should have been done first. The latter could either have Pretender shells that break apart into accessories for the figures and/or the combiner to integrate them or make them transform so the shells are part of the robots.

I think the energon combiners and FOC Bruticus could use a good upgrade especially with legacy around the corner.
Energon had alright chest bots while the limb bots had some odd flaws like no elbows or odd hands/feet but superion was a mess.
FOC Bruticus had good limb bots they had good robot/vehicle modes but onslaught was to small and suffered in all modes for it. Also he did have built in “hands and feet” but the only good one I would say swindle does the hands/feet the best but it needed separate parts.
During My time with constructicon Maximus I found that at least those limbs could be modified to have elbows by just messing with the joints so I wonder if they rest with some playing around could grant them the same
I mean there is 1 upgrade for Constructicon Maximus. For Bruticus and Superion Maximus, there is the FansProject ones.
For the FOC Bruticus, there was a company that did a whole new Onslaught with parts to fix the combine mode aka, actual parts forming. While another one was your more traditional upgrade kit.

Personally, I believe that bargain bin is a little too low for nexus prime. Perhaps lower end of retail. Other than that, I enjoyed watching your ranking of these combiners.
I don't have a full tier list and my list of favorites is based on what I own.
G1: Protectobots
BW: Magnaboss
RID: Railracer
Universe Micromasters: I kind of like all of them really.
Energon: Can I go with Optimus Prime? Really don't like any of the actual "Combiners" of that line though I love the gimmick.
I also don't understand the insistence that the Dinobots need to combine. Nobody demands the Throttlebots or Battlechargers have a combined mode.
well...you got Rail Racer correct at least. That is one of my all-time favorites. And that those Energon ones were awful lol.
Superion was my favorite of the "scramble city" style combiners...and they were not boring or any of those things you said. Each one is a separate type of aircraft, unlike the "Seekers" which are all F-15 style jets. As someone who loved airplanes and fighter jets, to get different types in the Aerialbots was awesome: Concorde SST, AV-8 Harrier, F-4 Phantom, F-15 Eagle, and F-16 Falcon...way more cool than all the same old Decepticon jets. And the G2 one...doesn't sound like you've ever been to an air show lol.
Many of the Combiner Wars ones, at first, were worthy successors to their G1 counterparts. Then, of course, they went weird. It's always nice when a combiner can do the gimmick without sacrificing the individual toy. I also agree that there's no reason for Dinobots to combine...that was a fan wank cash grab because some fans out there always wanted that so they did it lol.

The only thing I would change is putting the Seacons in holy grail but that's just my bias for aquatic Transformers. The G1 versions would be higher just because of the Target Master Weapon mode the 6th member can do. BWII still has the weapon modes but they're missing a member making the weapon modes kinda pointless. I do love how much remolding they put into Octopunch to make Scylla work because that mold is female in BWII. I was fully expecting just straight repaints like the original toys were but that remolding on the Generations Selects for animation accuracy was great.
Barricade was the name of what should have essentially been Energon Onslaught.
And Lion Prowl actually always has been confirmed at G1 Prowl. The TM2 Owl is the BW Prowl who thought he was G1 but actually was a brand new character.

Probably a hot take but I WAY prefer ROTF Devastator over G1 Devastator, albeit just design wise. Personality wise I do lean towards the original Devastator more, but ROTF Devastator has always been the superior design for me.

That's not really a combiner. That's a powerlinx. In a combiner, basically a whole new personality is born. While a powerlinx, it's just the 1 personality. Like Armada Optimus and Jetfire. It was always Optimus' personality that was present, never got a hint of Jetfire's

Um… The connection that all the bots of Grand Galvatron was they all have connections to Unicron. Unicron was the one who created Grand Galvatron by putting Galvatron’s spark into Cyclonus after Cyclonus came to where the Headmasters “power of friendship” killed Galvatron.
I also really like Nexus Prime - but I would have liked to see a new version of him…
Victorion is overhated. Being created around the late game of IDW 1 when nothing but Lost Light was good isn’t her fault.
TJ's problem with Monstructor is kinda the problem with Pretenders in general. While the robot is out and doing things...what are you gonna do with the shell? That's the boring part. They tried to make them interesting in Power of the Primes, but even without owning any of them I can tell that they still weren't great. Makes me wonder if Pretenders is gonna be yet another "wacky '80s gimmick" that'll go without any proper representation in the future (ie, bringing the gimmick back; not turning Pretender shells into robot forms like Bludgeon).

They're not there but the combiners from RID15 are definitely in the lowest tier. Though I do think they look a bit cool in the show (especially with those sub combiners among limb bots), but not so much in plastic due to over simplicity.
