- This 2024 Chevrolet Silverado W/T is the cheapest new truck you can buy today (if you imagine it doesn't have a back seat). It's selling for $39,985 and the two door version comes in closer to $36k with current rebates. Today we're going to check out this 2024 work truck and compare it to my 2006 GMC Sierra work truck I just bought.

A $40K truck worth every bit of $24K!
If it’s got cruise, a/c and electric windows it’ll be fine by me.
Not to mention I think cloth seats are more comfortable.
How often do you adjust your mirrors or seating position unless it’s a company car used by multiple people.
Imagine how many years of trouble free driving someone going to have in that truck while all those high end models are parked up because all there overly complicated options have broken.
Cheers Pat🇦🇺
You and me both!
I'd go for a single cab version if they do ADM sales,it would be cool to see how they'd compare to the RAM utes, but a manual version maybe
@@shannonschneider8413 👍👍👍
I can live without options but I need electric mirror adjustment not folding crap and defrost for them. I had a renault company car without it and winters its horrible to scrape them and readjust
A power drivers side mirror can be used to make tailgating you very uncomfortable.
I'd love a truck like that with manual and analog EVERYTHING.
Electronics are cheaper and easier to design. That's why you don't even see manual windows anymore.
@@FastSS02When the warranty expires and those electronics start failing, you will understand when getting a repair estimate why some wish for the old school mechanical systems.
this is a crew cab truck, I wouldnt want to unlock and lock both back doors manually each time i forgot a tool. I wish truck engines didn't have VVT or cylinder deactivation, but those days have passed. Now if a manual windows stripper trim was available for $25k in 2wd that would change the equation, but basic power options don't really add much to the price.
Manual transmission doesn't sell in volume. That's why it's no longer an option
Vehicle's running down the line with the same options are cheaper to make..... buying is about story.
I’m a Ram salesman, I’d love to see you do a review of the Ford and Ram equivalent to this truck. I’m impressed at the Chevy’s price for what you get.
I too would be interested in knowing the difference between Ram vs ... would really like to comparison on the diesel line instead of gas
Sad thing is back in 2014, this was a $20-22k truck. I purchased a new 1500 LT 4x4 in 2014 for $26k. Times have changed.
I thought Dodge had the cheapest 4x4 now ?
@@un1xb0x I actually just sold a Ram 1500 eco diesel today. I absolutely love them and the Chevy equivalent. The Chevy seems to have a much more potent low end while the Ram seems to have it beat in the top end. But I’d like to see JR’s opinion on it.
@@prodigalpilotI agree, very unfortunate how unaffordable everything is getting. But, if you track inflation from 2014 to now, it probably checks out relatively close to the same amount of value of what you’re getting today.
One more thing to note on Silverado, the WT gets the pre-face lift dash board. Totally different on the higher trims, not just screen size, the entire dash is different.
Ford Maverick is way cheaper. It has a hitch, it has a bed, its a truck.
@@BoopSnootyea if your a homosexual
@@BoopSnoot I honestly wouldn't say way cheaper ... most I seen around the tristate area dealers here are in the $30k + range and this fit and finish, to me at least, feels better.
Plus the cabin / bed is bigger ...
guess boils down to what ya need the vehicle for ...
I love how we actually stepped BACKWARD in headlight technology from the weird “bean counters were asleep” generation of GM full size trucks that *ALL* had factory standard xenon headlamps from 2016-2018, yes even the W/Ts (though in the HDs strangely none of the 2500 Chevys got them regardless of trim while all the 2500 GMCs did).
We need to take a step back. Modern headlights are far to bright and expensive. Taillights that have LEDs and the glowing strips are over $1000 if you have to replace them.
My $67k 2024 Silverado 3500 has halogen lights because the package that adds LED was unavailable and going to an LTZ was like $6k. Crazy
I agree. No LEDs is a selling point as they are too bright. I went past a car wreck the other day and all the police cars were throwing up a light show that was absolutely blinding.@@Dave-in-MD
@@marknelson8724 This is a myth and dangerously and almost ignorantly wrong for several reasons… First of all, high intensity lighting be it Xenon or LED when installed PROPERLY in a factory system throws off light that is more natural and closer in hue to natural daylight. Assuming you aren’t talking about a lifted to the sky pickup truck or an aftermarket retrofit rammed inside a halogen housing, the oncoming light from a so equipped vehicle should actually be *less* dazzling than a halogen car throwing its widely scattered light all over the place. And I’ve been damn near blinded by misadjusted halogens or halogens on lifted trucks every bit the same or worse than I have on LED or xenon equipped vehicles. Second, everyone having access to advanced lighting makes the road as a whole safer for all of us because you know, being able to see 5 feet in front of you is kind of important especially at night. Advanced lighting systems deposit a more focused and narrowly directed beam of light out ahead of the driver in such a fashion that you can not easily “out drive” the lights as is the case in many terrible halogen systems. When it’s working properly, you get a nice flat and even pool of light out ahead of you without the hotspots associated with halogen.
This is such an important factor that beginning in 2021 NHTSA began docking safety points to vehicles that still insisted on using halogen lights when in reality LEDs are probably cheaper to implement by now anyway and most manufacturers who offer both types in one model are really just adding to their assembly line costs strictly to “shame” the buyers of the lower tech solution into upgrading to costlier packages, options or entire models.
And lastly, because halogens are typically so horribly implemented (sure you don’t get blinded by many of them… why? Because the person driving can’t see sh*t either!), I see SO many halogen equipped car drivers on dark roads using their high beams which is not an appropriate solution as it’s worse than anything discussed here.
But sure, let’s continue with the “get off my lawn” boomer approach because “oLd sTuFf is gOODeR”. Bottom line , other than less maintainability in the field and higher replacement costs which are offset mostly by the fact that these lighting systems fail at a fraction of the rate of typical incandescent and halogen versions, advanced lighting is good for ALL of the driving public.
The best visibility i've ever had in a car, and i've driven every setup available, was an Explorer with fog lights that only could be used only with low beams. Crazy what a difference it made when on. A 2005 and a 2018. The SRX was decent too. Wish they were available on all cars.
I still want crank windows and a manual transmission. Even the base work trucks have more tech then we did 20 years ago on the highest trims did.
My daily driver from 1997 to 2003 was a 1997 Chevy W/T, short bed, short cab, 2wd, V6, 5-speed manual. This 2024 W/T is a limo by comparison.
I believe the only "truck" that you can get that way is a Jeep Gladiator. For me, anything made by Stellantis is off my buying list.
Where were people like you a decade ago??? The big 3 automakers deleted these options from the order form because nobody wanted them. They couldn't sell a truck 10 years ago with a stick shift and hand crank windows. I love how the price skyrocketed so people are now willing to buy a Chevy Cheyenne base model. The Denali sells for a reason
@@gregorylyon1004Over the years I had owned a 1992 GMC, 2001 Ford, & a 2006 Ram 1/2 ton pickups. All had V6 engines, manual transmissions, and crank windows. They all sold quickly & for good money, especially for the Ram I let go in 2021. I would argue there is definitely a market for stripper manual trucks. The manufacturers though simplify production and make much more profits by making former options now standard equipment so all buyers are hit with a heftier MSRP.
That is clearly wrong. For example, useful features (instead of the silly things like tailgate fluff) like auto dimming mirrors, are pretty much essential today due to all the arsehats on the road with ridiculously blinding headlights. 20 years ago, any mid-level trim truck or SUV had them.
All the trucks that I have owned where always the base workman trucks, the two things that I requested was ac and cruise, to me all the electricity and electronics are just made to break and the repairs will cost you way more than $500.00, never had a problem using keys, window cranks and manual side mirrors and the best they never broke or did not function properly
I agree! Talked to supposed truck expert and he said your/my truck would not sell as today's young buyers want the "stuff."
many of us feel this way.
I would by one if they priced it right. 50,000++++ is unacceptable for these trucks.
Forget the chrome bumpers and alloy wheels. Give me remote start, Krown rustproofing, and a quality spray-in bedliner. You'll be set for keeping it looking good.
I LOVE the sound of old diesels.. I can sleep so peacefully listening to those things. It's like Rain on a Tin Roof.. Slumber Time !!
A 400 big cam Cummins will whistle you right to sleep then, that Holeset turbo really sings.
You probably shouldn’t be driving a diesel then, wouldn’t want u falling asleep cruising down the highway 😂
@@brianandrews6552 no but there seems to be a lot of drivers sleeping anymore, they let any joker drive. Here it’s an automatic anybody can drive it, 70’ long grossing 80k 🙄
Buddy of mine had this truck with the same engine, it blew in only 3500-6000ish miles only hauling a bass boat or side by side once in a while. He immediately traded back up for the 5.3
Same here. He had to lemon law it.
Smart😊
Damn...
Hauling during the break-in period?
Yah, I would not buy a 4 cyl turbo in a heavy vehicle.
This video sold me a work truck is now a family vehicle. Honestly I have a wife and two kids that could be our daily vehicle and nice at that thank you JR go love your videos.😊
Kudos to you for handling this with such grace and class.
Tbh I kinda love the base models of cars. I'm all in for steelies, black bumpers/mirros, cloth seats and the comfort essentials (AC, an infotainment with bluetooth and power windows/mirrors).
Same here. I have an Express 2500 4.8 with power windows/locks/cruise/tilt, I added factory navigation radio and backup camera, it's perfect. It doesn't need anything else.
My 1993 Chevy Cheyenne was just like that. But had no ac. Had that truck for over 13 years.
On white work trucks and probably many other colors, window tints + black everything but wheels looks better than chrome because chrome looks ugly next to light colors. On dark colored CCLB trucks it is good to have chrome grill and bumpers so people can see where the end of the truck is when it sticks out of a parking space at night.
I can do without a lot of options, but I WANT that V8!! I also see they still have the old 2019 interior.
WT and custom has old interior
I agree. I need that V8 in my truck.
@@QuickSaveF5 I don't have to have a v8 but. I found a 2012 F150 a few months ago at a decent price and only 76k miles on it. Yeah, it's got a Coyote 5L. It'll scream, I love it.
V8 in a half ton is nearly extinct today and will fully gone in all trucks
@@trebors386 What are you talking about? GM offers the 5.3 and 6.2 in the 1/2 ton. Ram has the 5.7 and Ford has the 5.0 V8 as options.
Love the WT review. I essentially ordered one, an F150 with three options: 5.0 engine. hitch and spray in bed liner for 37K out the door after incentives in 2022. And the 5.0 surprisingly gets the same mpg numbers as the Colorado! Crank windows, manual seats and a KEY to open the doors, no fob! I purchased a set of original Ford alloys on ebay for 400 bucks and put on a set of dedicated snows for winter on the steelys.
You're definitely making the Ford dealer sweat aren't you.
i doubt they even know who he is. its the ford dealer not o reillys auto parts.
Idk.. from some of these comments the engine blowing up @ 3500 to 6000ish miles😅. Who knows. But a little concerning considering u can't find a bad review or comment on my little 3.3 NA v6. At least i haven't been able to and I've researched it a lot. Supposively a bullet proof little engine - this coming from a certified Ford Mechanic on internet 🤷♂️. Hopefully he's right
Just FYI - this is the base model work truck of the Ford
I switched from F350 diesel to the 6.6 gas Chevy HD. A great option and pulls a trailer pretty well.
I recently bought a loaded Midsize 4x4 (Top Off-Road factory lifted package as well) for almost $50K I was actually coming from a fairly well optioned GMT800 4x4 (well optioned for 1999 anyway) and my neighbor and a few friends that haven’t priced trucks lately were scoffing at what I paid vs what I got but If I did a similar option full-size I easily would have been spending 10-20K more and possibly gotten less than I did so yeah it’s great they still offer trucks like this and more than likely if I wanted back into a full-size truck again I’d be starting with a 4WD version of this thing but I’m likely ending up near that $50K again and it’ll still be a 4Cyl Turbo just a lot less agile and slower than what I’ve got now
Thanks for the tour! I like this a lot more than I thought I would! Especially the way it is packaged under the hood.
perfect timing just got my del taco and now i got something to watch
I'm impressed that the bottom-optioned truck is so good. I'm not impressed with the price. For that amount of money I'd rather have a nicer truck with a few miles on it. Thanks for the review!
2012 w/t hand crank windows , cruise AC and 4wd single cab. 5.3 I am a Toyota dude but got a smoking deal. All the electric stuff that breaks on a Chevy, not there. I love this truck. It changed my mind on Chevy
Had a GMC with the 5.7 V8 regular cab 8 ft. bed. Now that was a REAL work truck.
I agree. It doesn't need to be 4WD, but it needs to have an 8 ft. box and a V8.
I drive an '08 2500 for work. Cloth seats and crank windows, but you cant beat the value. Bought it for 2k with 180k miles, now its at 300k with maybe 4k total into it. I've hauled back hoes, bobcats, units of 2x4s in the bed, etc and she just rolls with the punches.
I recall back in the day my father ordered a pretty well options Chevy truck in 1995. It is ridiculous how much better, more comfortable, more capable, and better equipped this one is.
the 95 truck was the size of todays midsize
@@bikeman1x11 in some ways, except that the old truck was not available in a crew cab and half ton. So the cabs are actually much better on a modern midsize.
This thing is a POS

My 93 silverado had very comfy seats but no back doors on the extended cab. This crew cab is infinitely more usable.
I think this is actually pretty nice! I still always wish it was cheaper. My father bought back in the day a base model Dodge pickup. Had roll up windows, manual everything, no cruise control and the worst was no tilt steering wheel. He loved it tho! There is a market!
Yup I’ll take the fewer options any day
I've got a 2020 4.3 liter not one problem 15000 miles. On it drives like a Cadillac super quiet. Completely satisfied.
I like vinyl seats and rubber floors mat instead of rugs. It's a lot easier to clean when your muddy from doing landscape work.
That new truck still has more option than I would like. I wish you could go into a dealership and put a truck together like I use to do. I use to be able to tell them what I wanted and get it now it's just settling for their packages.
yea rubber floors are a lot better. Quadrasteer was one of the best thing GM came up with but it was only available in weird trim packages and the dealerships talked customers out of ordering it. This last time around I couldn't even find a 2wd truck for pressure washing because thats not what people drive around here.
The dealership makes money off the added options.
Ford dealers add numerous options on XL trucks and charge 65k to 70k.
FYI I drive a 2020 1 wheel drive Silverado 2.7L 4 cylinder turbo daily as a company provided vehicle. It replaced a GMC 1 wheel drive 4.3L NA 6 cylinder. The 4 turbo gets identical mpg as the 6 but feels like a V-8. So far I am impressed but it only has around 45,000 miles on it. Let's see how it does with 125,000 miles? PS It has a check engine light on, already. Something to do with a gas evap fan for emissions. Just typical GM quality.
My personal vehicle is a 2018 Toyota Tundra SR5 4x4. Of course it has never had a single issue or engine light come on.
I didn't realize the 4 cyl makes more torque than the V8 until this video... We live in a wild time 😳
@@WatchJRGobecause 4 cyl has more power potential.
For less than $500 a month you could buy two older trucks, Insure them both, and have one rebuilt over time as you use it as a backup for the other. I've tried to upgrade out of my 2003 S10 every year for the last 4 years and then find out that it would be cheaper to completely rebuild it than to buy anything more reliable than it already is. I guess I'll be driving it forever at this rate.
I run a 2008 Tundra and it costs more than $500 a month in repairs so I don't know if I buy what you are saying
You’re not alone. I have an ‘08 F150 I bought new with 75 miles on it. Has nearly 300k now & it works just fine. Haven’t had a truck payment in 14 years, so that’s at least $84,000 I haven’t spent. I’ve had to replace or repair a few things along the way, but all those repairs combined cost maybe $6,000. I’d rather keep driving an older truck & take care of it, and put the money I save in the bank.
I couldn’t agree more! I’ll keep my 98 Silverado extended cab with a 350. It’s still cheaper to repair than replace.I only had one major problem that my awesome mechanic was able to diagnose and fix last year. Dad always said if you can repair it for less than half it would cost to replace, then keep it. With the price of trucks nowadays it looks like I’ll be driving it until it quits or I do 😉. I’m planning on getting a new paint job within the year.
If Cubans can drive 70 year old cars, we can drive 20 year old vehicles!
@@greggalexander5913 it’s being made a necessity here for the same reasons.
I really like it. When my old forester blows up (if it ever does), this is really all I want. Heat, a/c, cruise control, android auto, manual mirror, etc. I'm just short lol so I'd look into my options for steps
In 04 I bought a base model fleet type Ford Explorer. It had no extra options. It served our family well to 275K before it went to the scrapper. I added a few options to it along the journey and if I ever buy a new vehicle again I will start looking at base first
got a frontier with manual door locks and window cranks. Freakn love that truck. When stuff breaks down its the easiest repair in your life lol
I have a 2003 Frontier just like yours, and love it. 160 K on it and it looks like new, and runs like a top. Paid 11K with 10,000 miles on it. It was showroom condition and l haven't had a payment for 15 years. Never had to repair an electric window ! 😂

It's wild to me that even a "work truck" spec truck comes with infotainment now, lol. I'm "only" 40, and I can still remember when that kind of spec didn't even get you a/c, or power ANYTHING, lol.
I'm 37 and I remember that too. My dad still has a 97 f250HD. It's straight up work truck, the only comfort feature it has is A/C. No power seats, windows, locks, cruise or even carpet. It's as simple as they get. It has NEVER broke down.
My neighbor had a 1995 F150 long bed, 2wd regular cab. It had no options on it, manual trans 300/6. I guess it had power steering, am/fm radio and cloth seat. 🤣 They advertised trucks like that CHEAP back then. Like under $10k.
It's because the government MANDATES a backup camera in EVERY vehicle sold since 2012-ish. It's easier just to put the same small screen in everything vs the display rearview mirrors they initially used.
Adjusted for inflation this cost LESS than the base 2004 chevy silverado but you get way more for todays time
Own a 2.7 turbo since 2019. 81k miles. Not a single engine issue, and it’s a warrior. I tow, I haul (cut wood and deliver it during winters). I plow with it.

Got one just like it… except it has remote start… truck is all you need! Nothing fancy! Perfect!
This truck has more options than the loaded midsize truck I bought in 2000.
Glad my 2005 Chevy Tahoe 4x4 with Trailer Towing Package has the 5.3 v8 and has low mileage. It's also white LS package low frills third row seat rear ac rear heat Bose Sound System gray cloth seats.
Hang on to that.....that was before GM RUINED THE 5.3 6. 0 with SUBPAR AFM LIFTERS in 2007. You have the bulletproof version !
It still has more options than I’d use, but I’d like the steps. I think you just made me want to look at my first car or truck not built in the 90’s 😂
I know this is a few months old now but it's amazing how well equipped basic trucks are now. I got my 2017 F150 STX new with a 2.7L ecoboost, and it was so nice compared to the 2000 F150 5.4L XLT I was driving beforehand. I miss the prices though, I drove that off the lot for $30k out the door(the 2000 I drove off the exact same lot for $26k 17 years earlier), and sticker was $33k. The only thing mine is missing that I would like(and could add for $300 and an hour of my time) is a backup camera). I tow constantly with a small 5'x10' cargo trailer that usually weights 1500-3000lbs and it handles it well.
Getting new vehicles stripped-down with no power options is more than a bargain. How many repair videos does JR have showing him fixing broken power windows as opposed to manual crank windows? Those power options break way more often. And how many cars have reliable bulletproof manual transmissions where their automatic transmissions are problematic disasters?
How many people are interested in driving a manual transmission?
Perhaps if you intend to drive it into the ground but for the first 10 years you should be good.
Yeah,@@duncanarends604, I bought a new 1999 Saturn SL1 in the most base model; no A/C, manual transmission, and manual doors, windows & mirrors. Had that basic commuter car for 17 years and traded it in before it reached 200,000 miles with no problems (just regular oil changes and standard maintenance). Best reliable car I ever had. Found out that those Saturns had problems with the automatic transmissions, but my manual transmission was very reliable.
I wonder if the WTs have a different set of speakers than the LTs. When I first got our LT I thought that the sound quality was horrible (total talk radio quality), but when I went into the audio settings and maxed the treble and 90 percent of the bass I was pleasantly surprised with how well the sound in my LT really is.
I doubt it. The Bose is an option on the LT's. Tweaking the treble and bass does help sound quality, but it's still not great. I replaced my door speakers with MB Quarts and put Pioneer speakers in the dash as they were the only true 2 way speakers I could find made for the dash since they are an odd 2.75 size.
This is what I buy and what I own. The fewer electronic options, the better. They do come a few. Love the full instrument cluster. It's all I want.
That 2.7L is a fun truck. I got one as a rental once when mine was in for repair. It is a hotrod. I used it to tow a boat and a trailer and it did great. It lacks torque from the V8 off the line but if you just stab it with a load on the back, that little turbo comes out screaming and will get the truck off the line in a hurry in tow mode. I just kept turning on as I called it "haul ass mode" which was the tow button. It made that truck way more fun to drive lol.
5.3 383 ft lbs torque @4,100 rpm. 2.7 430 ft lbs torque @3,000 rpm.
@@ews360 You can have all the torque in the world but if the OEM decides you get like 5ft/lbs of torque off the line then that is what you get lol. They limit the power with the traction control. The stock tires are terrible, and it broke loose too easy. The nanny mode seemed to be much less when it was in tow mode. I know all about the power robbing traction control. The truck that was in the shop was a duramax it pissed me off in more than one occassion by deactivating the gas pedal because the truck turned TC back on, which then turned off my pedal even though I held TC button until it was full off. You need to actually go and pull the stupid fuse and then your truck is all pissed about service this and that. I was just trying to drive through a kind of muddy field that cars were making it through but my awesome new diesel truck is stuck in ankle deep mud because it keeps turning off my pedal. I had to get towed by a tractor... I have a 2003 5.3 Tahoe LS 2wd and doesn't have any nanny systems on it. That thing is the most damn fun you can have in a stock truck hooning around. My badass truck won't let me. Who pays the bills? It got sold.
I have a 2023 Ram Classic and this is better in almost every way. BUT I do love the 5.7 hemi in the Dodge. For instance, the power steering failed on me at 145 miles...the entire steering rack had to be replaced because it's electronic. The infotainment center in the Chevy is impressive for this model.
Shame you can’t get a 5.7 anymore
@@trebors386 agreed! I have a 2018 Ram with the 5.7 that has 131k on it and it runs spectacular.
I went from a High Country to a Custom trim 2500HD. I absolutely love it. A little above a WT, but still pretty basic. I honestly don't miss any of the creature comforts of the High Country. Best value in the truck market.
Dude its gonna blow up😆🤣
I paid $29000 for a 2021 V6 Silverado brand new and love it rubber floor and steel wheels, black bumpers
It's nicer than my 2011 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman, aside from not having a V8 or 4x4. Honestly I'd love to get a newer base model truck if I could afford to drop $400+ a month on a payment
And even if you don't intend it to use as a fleet, farm or work vehicle, a truck like this with few aftermarket cosmetics and convenient upgrades can guarantee a nice new truck ride quality, wich is way better than an used old truck (even if is fully loaded), without having to spend over 55K on a mid spec new 1/2 ton truck from the mainstream manufacturers.

I really do think that these are the best deal when it comes to pickup trucks to buy.
Eddy's has great marketing, you AND Hoovie showcasing their cars and trucks.
Truck seems nice!! All War Department has is old '15 Ram Quad Cab bought her for $23,000 in '15 from Enterprise w/11, 000 miles on it. Just 3.6L V-6 & 8 spd, but still goes like rapid ape! I splurged for BFG real aggressive tires, so she gets great traction & mileage, & w/51,000 mi on 'em still mint! When got truck, put window visors, runnin' boards, tall bug shield, & trailer wiring on it so she moved household from Mich to FLA. Unloaded haulin' trailer, she averaged about 34 MPG, but fully overloaded she only got 24 MPG so told me I'd effed up, as it cost money for her to move!! (Ya think). She was right ya know, as hadn't put her old red container STP Oil Treatment in as didn't have many left. Gave in, & she got 36 & 27 respectively, so we was good. I guess she's been usin' it some as rig has 62 ,000 miles on it now. No bangs, dents, scrapes or other BS on it. She's still using new set of tires I got her in '15, and same brakes, shocks, plugs, wires, motor, drivetrain, but the good people at The Ram Dealer sent her notice her truck gettin' old, & not had repairs it obvious needs by now, so will give her a break & allow her $10, 000 for her piece of junk against a new Ram Quad Cab for $52.000, so she suggested I should go out & get a job again, so she can do exactly that! I had to think fast if possible, so promised to detail her piece of junk out, shine 'em back up to New+, and take her & her piece of junk to Dealership. They weren't too pretty interested in having to deal with a woman, a thought I'd also had a few times lately, but basically told us to look at all four rows of brand new Rams, come back and tell what she thought of 'em. Well, being frickin' broke, I tried that ole cycle-loadgy deal on her, & suggested we make a list of purdiest trucks, so spent couple hours lookin', came back with list, but there was crowd around her truck, with 4 Salesmen just high-steppin' out to us. I started ole Bo (you know: RAM-BO) for get-a-way, Mgr grabbed Bo's windowsill, glanced over sayin', "Are we runnin"? We was thinkin' of runnin', but he was surprised couldn't hear motor, nor feel it runnin' either. I had to splain parallelism to 'em with growing Gallery, so said, "High voltage wires runnin' along each other can fire both cylinders, thus she runs rough., but Bo is a guy & he don't run rough!! Everyone there except Mgr realized I'd poked 'em, so had to lift hood, & there set Bo's motor just a purrin', so I told crowd, "These Rams nowadays manufactured so perfect, if ya buy the right oil treatment, don't pound the truck, & become right footed driver timing the lights, etc, you'll get a lot of years, & a lot of miles out of these babies!! With Mgr's Salesmen now doing their thing, I backed out, but Mgr back, shoved something in Wife's hand, then asked how I knew bout autos, so told him, "Family Tradition, Gramps of same name, Henry Ford's 1st Apprentice in '01". He did a little calculatin', and said, "That would mean Gramps worked for them in 2001?" I responded, "No Sir, Gramps worked for Henry in 1901 when it was just the two of them!". That blew the ole Boy's mind, so slowly made our escape & asked Wife which Ram she had found most beautiful? She answered, "Why Bo of course, if decided to go back to work at 82, it most likely would kill ya, & I'd miss you, although don't know why!! I asked Little Miss Perfect what was her wish for lunch, and she said didn't know, but as Mrg had slipped $500 in her hand, "How's about The Golden Corral"? Done & Done!!
I would pay extra for a reliable known engine the turbo 4 isn't old enough for me otherwise perfect truck., I still find it insane these (with a V8) used to be around 20 grand not that long ago. Great video
Really? When? 25 years ago? At least here in Texas.
@@bigjohnson7415feels like yesterday
can get the niisan frontier 6 cyl for under 30k with same equipment - that cycl wont last 5 years in a work truck
@@bigjohnson7415 roughly 2000-2005 I would say get a WT for about 25 grand and now their 40 grand+ it's just interesting to see such an increase in price.
@@LeatherandLuxuryCarsd So, 18-23 years timeframe. So using that logic, go back another 18-23 years from 2000-2005. So a truck in 1977-1982, what do you think the cost would have been? Around $10k for a new one back then? I just point this out as people complain about "Inflation" mostly just as a political cudgel. When in reality, at least in my lifetime, there's never really been a time without inflation. I grew up in the mid-late 70's. Now THAT was inflation!
Is that the battery light flashing while running and driving?
Just bought a 2024 Silverado 1500 W/T with a regular cab particularly to drag a 5000 lb travel trailer around. The 2.7 liter Turbomax 4 cyl engine is rated 310 bhp and 430 ft-pounds which is impressive. This truck is taking over the trailering from a BMW SUV diesel, 3.0 liter 6 rated 265 bhp and 425 ft-pounds. The Chevy engineers managed to make the Turbomax have a very diesel-like torque curve by making that turbocharger really work hard at low rpm, no doubt why you hear the turbo so much. I would have liked to get the Duramax 3 liter 6 engine but those are very hard to find and impossible under 60 grand. This Turbomax was my second choice, but very capable.
Ordered a brand-new 1992 1500 W/T Regular Cab 4x4. V6, 5-speed, A/C, cloth, rubber floor, AM/FM, Cruise. Miss that rig.
JR wasting dealerships time with these test drives . Im all for it . Ahh not to mention the ripping a non broken in engine 😂😂
Wouldn't be surprised if the dealership actually reached out to him first.
Yeah. It only had 2 miles because it hadn't gone through dealership prep and was still in "transit mode" showing on the info screen.
The Ram 1500 Classic starts at $32,345 for a standard cab long bed V6 2WD pickup.
It's a little odd as the 2023 is the current model year, the 2024 Ram 1500 Classic will come out with the 2025 Ram 1500. The classic is a model year behind but still current.
Yeah, but it's a Chrysler product!🤣😜🤣
and you have the choice of white or red for that price.
4 banger with a turbo in a truck 😳. It’s nice now being new but wait until it has 50,000 miles on it. Awesome review. You should definitely do more of these. 👍🏻
Back when I was a teenager in the 80s this work truck would have been more like a midgrade optioned truck. They sold trucks then with no radios even, in addition to no power windows, no power locks, no tilt wheel, no power mirror adjustment, heck no right side mirror at all! I know - we had one like that, 85 half ton stripper with zero options! No AC either! 4 speed manal with granny gear, 4.3 V6 with carb and 110 HP! IIRC, it cost less than $10K.
My mom took it down to the local car stereo shop and got an Alpine put in with some 6.5 door speakers because it was her daily driver. I watched them saw the holes in the dash and doors for the speakers. It was fantastic after that stereo installation. Mom was big into 60s rock and so was I.
Learned to drive stick on that thing when I turned 16. Great truck. Slow wasn't quite an adequate description, but hey it got you from point A to point B reliably and had a rockin stereo for all those 80s tunes.
Unfortunately we sold it in 88 because my dad got a job in Houston and my parents immediately went out and got cars with AC before we moved. Lol.
Why did the battery light keep flashing. Not a bad truck, only options I’d go for would be a 5.3 and 4wd
Bingo PAL 💯🤙🏻😎
That funnel in the glove boxes in case you run out of gas you can stick it down in the gas tank
No it's not, it's for when you gotta pee and you only have a 20oz bottle in the truck! LOL
I would still opt for the 5.3 in this truck, only for a sound preference. That turbo whistle would get annoying on my 7 hour drives from south to west Texas.
Bought a new (40 miles) '23 Silverado Custom ($50,500 sticker - Paid $36,800 after incentives, before tax). Traded '16 Silverado 5.3 before it crapped out a lifter. Increased torque from 383 ft lbs to 430. 9,000 lb towing capacity. A few mpg better than 5.3 V8. 5 yr, 60k mile drivetrain warranty. The 2.7 turbo is the exclusive engine for Colorado, Canyon, & optional in Cadillac CT4. I'm betting more lifter failures on 5.3 V8, than engine failures of 2.7.
Super nice WT! The motor is a 2.7 which is large for a 4 cylinder. Maybe the largest 4 cylinder manufactured today???
Would still take a 5.3 any day of the week - it's ridiculous how much more people are paying for pickups these days only to get over-complicated and undersized engines to get around EPA regulations and get a few more miles per gallon.
You're not 'saving money' paying $60k for a pickup that gets 20mpg VS a $30k truck that gets 15mpg and actually has a motor that will last you 20yrs and won't require a 2nd Mortgage to repair when a turbo goes out or the diesel emmisions control system needs to be replaced.
I own a 5.3. Personally not interested in turbos for daily drivers. But it is a big 4 banger!@@scrambler350
Right up to the point he intemroduced the Turbo 4 cylinder I was giving it a chance. 4 cylinders don't belong in a full size truck. I'll stic with my 5.3 V-8.
The 4 cylinder has more torque than your engine 😂
@firstlast--- that may be so, but my engine is naturally aspirated and doesn't have to run in boost constantly to make the same power. I see that turbo 4 cylinder burning out way before my 5.3 litre ever slows down.
The funnel is for adding gas by can needed to push the flap down for the cap less.
Three years ago, I bought a 2000 1500 Silverado. It had one DEEP scratch on the (regular) cab and one light scratch on the (long) bed. It also had a legitimate 36K miles. I paid a total of $10,000 for it, which I thought was way too much at the time. This was purchased just before the 2020 Covid used-vehicle-skyrocketing-values started. Turns out, it was a genuine bargain for what is nearly a new truck. One of my better deals.
They are hard to find on a dealers lot, but you can still get regular cab trucks (short and long bed) - they are popping up like mad all over the place here (the vast majority being F150's, and while these are work trucks, they aren't being used by businesses exclusively for work). You may not believe there isn't a market for them - but they are selling like hot cakes here.
Okay, the push button parking/emergancy brake bothers me. It's fine for a new vehicle, but ever had a flex hose or master cylinder go bad... Now use that brake to bring the vehicle to a controlled safe stop...
@@nukedathlonman why does it bother you? It's an electric motor on each rear wheel that pushes the brake pads in.
There are no half ton reg cab wt available in the US w a v8. They’re all turbo 2.7L. There is a 3500 Silverado wt reg cab 6.6L though. 12mpg. Great truck and no AFM ! , a traditional no BS motor
Need a 5.3, a manual shift transfer case and remota start = perfect!
6.2 ;)
Definitely a 6.2! 5.3 is too unreliable unfortunately.
Had two 5.3s and in my lifetime, it was the best most reliable engine I ever owned in a truck. Easy ti work on and in stock form it was powerful enough with "decent" fuel economy. We still talking econo trucks right? Maybe a 4.8 v8? A pickup is synonimous with V8 in my view.
@@045spdgt
lol yeah but the price goes up much more for that 6.2 (best in class v8 but we talkin econo trucks here)@@random13627
It's crazy though that this 4cyl has more torque than the 5.3
Also most perfect truck. Few things I could live without, but very close.
I agree with PaddyBoy644. I even work in I.T. and to me all the electronics I don't need. just something for me to fix when it breaks.
I think a work truck or van should be like $16,000- The next time your grandma complains that the oven repair guy charges $200 and hour you’ll know why. Being a tradesman is so ridiculously expensive these days.
the whole "Being a tradesman is so ridiculously expensive these days." shtick would be a lot easier for the general public to stomach if they were driving base model work trucks. But most of them are driving higher trim diesels, even if they don't tow...
@@timwolf6885 A lot of them are buying these high end trucks used that are retired from heavy duty trips to the mall and costco by white collar high income families (before you flame me I am a white collar business owner, in the tech space, and even I find it difficult to equip employees with a proper fleet because of the expense of modern vehicles)

Nice review very informative. I have never had a loaded vehicle has plenty for me.
Just looked at sticker of my 2016 (so, 8 yrs ago), Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT double cab Z71 5.3 was $44,685. (Paid $30,000, 7 yrs later received $25,000 trade in). My new 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom crew cab 4x4 was $50,565. (Paid $36,800). Both trucks are equipped w/ very similar options: power windows, locks, mirrors, rear window defrost, posi, 3.42 gear, trailering pkg, remote start, power seat. Pro - torque increased from 383 to 430 ft pounds. Con - horsepower decreased from 355 to 310. Went from 6 speed to 8 speed trans. Went from 2 speed transfer case to single speed (rarely used low lock anyways). Went from double cab to crew cab. More safety stuff, similar payload & towing, better mpg, 18" to 20" wheels.
I would never trade my truck with an 8ft bed for that 4 door short bed truck.
An 8 foot bed is wonderful to have. My extended cab 8 foot bed f150 may be tight to get around in parking lots, but when I hauled home an entire bathroom remodel in it, with the gate shut and topper closed.. all worth it.
I personally like an SUV for work such as a Tahoe. They are super easy to park, everything is covered and locked. Utility trailer in the back yard for anything crazy that needs to be hauled. The only thing that bites with the SUV is picking up used engines. They are a bare getting them out of a utility trailer.
@mph5896 I hauled an isuzu 3.5v6 in the back of my old yukon. Loaded it at the salvage yard with a forklift, unloaded it with a cherry picker at home.
@@JSAFIXIT yeah, I did that before. Had them drop a used engine in the back of an Expedition. It makes a huge mess, and I was pretty nervous if I got into an accident with a 600lb engine in the back🥴
@mph5896 I laid down a tarp and then some cardboard, no stained carpet.
Trucks are ridiculously overpriced now. 5 years ago, you could buy a brand new Colorado for like $20k.
This is a brand new full size truck, if you calculate inflation over the past 5 years 35k isnt bad compared to 20k for a mid size truck
Thank the EPA for killing the small truck market.
Yup, here in NY, 5 years ago, you could get a Colorado 2wd, no back seat, and a manual transmission for roughly 20k.
Actually the build cost between a midsize and a full sized truck is not very much.
I have a pretty original 1966 chevy c10 283 three on tree manual everything and a loaded 2018 Silverado 2500 high country diesel. Obviously new vehicle is nice for daily and trips but the old truck is great for around town and quick errands. I get lots of looks when I'm using the old truck to haul stuff with. Sometimes very base models are OK
Good review, thanks for sharing 👍.
