- @TannerBraungardt called me and said the check engine light in his Dodge Challenger just came on and he was leaving on a road trip. We needed to get it fixed quickly so he came straight over and we got to work. It was throwing a P0128 code which is a failed thermostat almost every time.

Anytime I’ve done a thermostat on the Dodge 3.6 I always go for the Dorman aluminum one they last a lot longer and they never break or crack
My thermostat sensor randomly throws the check engine light on. Replaced it twice. Arg
It’s not often I hear someone liking a Dorman product over OEM.
Dorman has great stuff . Ive never had an issue with any dorman stuff .
@@TheUsmc0802you have been very lucky
Well mopar and their use of plastics, I had the oil filter tube crack at the cooler. Dorman has a metal version of that as well
Dude has almost 4.5 million subscribers. Smart collaboration partner. 💯
Agree with you on the Riv. However, if you purchase one with the clamshell headlights, you are required by law to ask “Do these work?” while sparking up a cig before purchasing.
looks like a young Air Force troop going home on leave
When I saw the thumbnail, my first thought was "which branch?"
Airmen drive challengers, mustangs or camaros.
I mean, he did just do a video on surviving USMC boot camp XD
justin bieber collab -
Oh shit MGK
It's really cool watching you and Jake Paul work on his car.😂
I would bet the oil filter adapter housing is leaking causing the oil smell. They all leak. I think mopar is on like the 6th or 7th revision of the part.
Yep! Common issue on the 3.6, especially in the minivans. I'd recommend the available metal replacement instead of any of the plastic revisions.
Please replace your oil filter housing with the metal one. The plastic ones just constantly fail.
Congrats on 400 K JR. it is well earned. Need another video with pops soon.
The Pentastar at the foundation is a GREAT engine. The pennies saved in the supporting hardware can kill it. I've already replaced the plastic thermostat that grenades, the plastic oil cooler/oil filter mount, and the lifters. Granted all done after 150k . 2015 Durango.
I agree. Poor quality control IMHO. Jeep Wranglers with head casting problems where the heads have to be replaced and also valvetrain components like ticking rockers that will eventually lead to a valve dropping. You never see rockers going south with other brands just in the Pentastar. I'm a fan of the Pentastar because I own one in a Jeep but FCA really needs to step up their quality parts game. Jeep/Chrysler/FCA I'm pretty sure don't cast their own heads or make the rockers. Those are outsourced.
If they made all that stuff out of metal, it would be better.
@@herbiehusker1889 The heads and rockers are made out of metal.
I second Tanner's comment about the car being solid and smooth. I had a 2014 Charger RT, also the 100th Anniv. Package. Whether around town or on road trips, it was always comfortable and capable, and fast as heck when you needed it to be.
Hmmm, maybe take one of Jr's 7 cars to O'Reillys and let tanners car cool off?
We still had to wash it 🍻
They're all broken 😂
I hate it when thermostats won’t see reason and they have to go.😂
Just a FYI, when it is just two guys, never say "I held the hose!!".😅
But what if it's true?…
IRRATIONAL THERMOSTAT. I love their second album... ; )
Ikr, great band name 😂
Motor City Mechanic, loves these and has a GREAT channel showing how to fix almost anything on a 3.6
Glad to see you and him together, I was all over our 08 PT Cruiser today trying to swap out the radiator and fan all day under my car port. Got the radiator and fan in finally but not done yet. I like the car but man it's a bear to work on everything is so tight.
Gotta finish up tomorrow and hope everything is tight and good to go.
Looks like you're dealing with cooling issues but shouldn't be as bad as mine so far, more room and less to do, watching now w, as long as it's not ticking he should be good to go when done. Watching now.
My wife got rid of her PT Cruiser when we got married, because we didn't need it in Chicago. I told her that if she ever wants to get another one, she'd be doing the work on it herself. I've seen several people on You Tube cussing those things out, and my wife's hands are smaller than mine. I assured her that I'd help her with advice, and hang out for moral support.
My 95 Neon coupe was easier to work on and I even did the water pump and timing belt while I had it.
It was tight too but not this tight.
I didn't want to pull the air conditioning condenser and have to recharge it so probably made it harder.
Then the radiator refused to drop into the rubber mounts in the bottom so fought with that a few hours till I finally had my sister come out and try to help wiggle and hold it while I tried to walk them in. Only one side would drop in and the other was pushing the mount through the hole before it would go but finally got it.
Everything was hitting and pushing it the wrong way.
I had replaced the fan 11 years ago when the high side quit working on Mom and it would die when the air conditioning kicked on and it was hard but not this bad.
It only has 67k on it and Mom left it to sister so keeping it till it isn't worth trying to fix.
I'll pay a shop to do the timing belt and water pump when it needs it.
I paid a shop to replace the rear main in my Neon, wasn't worth trying to do it in my open driveway in Feb when it started leaking bad at about 155k, drove that one till 190k when the tensioner locked up and took out my timing belt again, wasn't worth the effort to fix it at that point but I loved driving that car.
Lil sister sold me her 06 Charger RT with 89k for 3k to replace it and it had been hers originally after I told her what options to get so she'd be happy with it 🙂
And it's done👍 Got up a bit earlier and took my time double checking and topped up the coolant slowly letting it burp and ran it till the fan kicked on, plus the air high speed works. No longer trying to die for a second when the compressor kicks on and no leaks. I don't know what I did but some leftover bolts. I know I had some leftovers from less mounting points on the aftermarket radiator. Everything seems tight though, temp good idling in the driveway. I guess if anything falls off that'll tell me what I missed🤔😂
@@genericsomething I've replaced the thermostat housing on my PT Cruiser. Your right, its tight in there. I've now got the parts to replace the radiator expansion tank on the firewall that is now leaking badly. It will involve removing the throttle body intake, just to make room.. Reminds me of how the A/C refrigerant has to be recovered and the A/C lines removed to access the timing belt and water pump.. I paid a shop for that job.. Looking back at my old Honda Accord, that engine bay had acres of room to work in..
Finally, a car I know something about!
Assuming he's got the stock amp, it's pretty easy to do, same procedure as the Charger/Magnum. I wouldn't worry about the speakers if they all work, you can do a channel mute test on the Autel, or with AlfaOBD on an Android device. It's right above the parking brake lever, so it's possible that he kicked it at one point.
Also based on the color of the coolant, he's due for a flush. Maintenance period on these is approximately every 10 years; should be a nice deep purple color (it fades over time).
Probably also needs sparkplugs at this point too.
If you are seeing oil on the top of the engine, it is almost always the oil cooler. It is part of the oil filter and made of plastic. They frequently crack. Any sign of oil on the top of the engine should get taken care of asap.
This happened to my 2012 Wrangler, and they haven't fixed this issue. At least it fails to the open position.
Congrats on 400k!
You had the perfect opportunity to throw in the Bill O'Reilly We'll Do It Live rant and missed it.
Thats the 100 year anniversary series, i have the v8 version with a manual transmission and absolutely love it 😊
Have the same motor in my jeep. I'd replace the sensor too, they generally go hand in hand. I'd go with OEM though for the sensor. Surprised he hasn't had the oil cooler leak, and the oil pressure switch.
Literally a quick and dirty repair.
Too funny. I just diagnosed my friends 14 Charger with the same issue. Him and his son were going to work on it this past weekend.
I've got a 2013 challenger SXT too. I get the same reactions oh its a V6 it runs and has had no problems ever
I've been looking around for one of these with a Hemi.
I had two of these cars a 19,22 with the 3.6 pretty nice cars. the awd worked great in these mich. winters.
"Everything on this channel is engine swap engine swap" 😂 Since when?
I have a Pacifica which comes with the3.6 and it moves when it needs to. Best running vehicle I've had since my 1973 Gran Torino with the 351 (unsure whether it was a C or W).
The Food Stamp Challenger.
My first Challenger was a silver 2014 SXT Plus. Loved the leather and the seats had a retro pleated pattern to them great car but I needed it to sound like an old muscle car so traded up a few times
I have this same engine in my jeep jku. If you saw oil under the hood, it could be coming from the oil cooler housing, over time they crack and leak and need to be replaced. The way they leak mimics a rear main seal leak when they start to drip on the ground. The aftermarket thermostats are 50/50 so most get oem since these engines can be so picky with the thermostats. It’s a nice challenger and I’m surprised it’s 10 years old.
ahhh man, i was hoping that I could watch JR teach him how to turn a wrench in the correct direction again!
Nice ride, got a hemi in my challenger big my daughter has a pentistar in her Chrysler 300
Love my Challenger, honestly. I have a bit different of a model though - the SRT8. Lil bit faster.
Wow.... Tanner hanging out at the JR garage!?!? Awesome!
They've done a few videos together. Also, "JR garage" is a different channel, lol.
@@BBPissed John Ross = JR's garage. And yes, I know about the other channel. :)
Hopefully you used the correct coolant as Chrysler switched HOAT / OAT types in the 2012 to 2014 range and they are not compatible with one another. When mixed they clump and cause major cooling system issues. Usually the parts store coolant is not the correct type. Fingers crossed
Next time crack open the overflow tank cap to relieve pressure and it also cools faster.
400k 🎉🎉
Nice!
Dude probably needs jr to put gas in it for him 🤣🤣🤣
My dad has a 2014 ram pick up with v6 pentastar oil filter housing seals start breakdown over time 265000 oil filter housing blew out it seals
Somehow, I end up here every single day.
I got some waterproof highheat gloves I use for coolant flushes. They never come in cold.
Did JR say "aluminium"? As a British supporter, I'm rather touched.
Preferably I’d rather see more videos with you and Gabe. You two are a great team. And Gabe is funny. 😊👍
the v6 challengers & chargers are very underrated, plenty of power & pretty good gas mileage, they are very good daily drivers.
A V6 Dodge Challenger is an affront to car guys... it's a disgrace and ... I'm only kidding...
I'm actually so glad there is a run of the mill model that younger guys can own for starters at a budget price... it's awesome man... great car....
They are one of the best looking cars... v6 or v8 ...
On that engine there is a temp sensor that should be changed with the thermostat. I don't think they normally state it, but I've seen more than one that will start throwing that code again if the sensor is not replaced. I wonder if in some cases it's not the thermostat, but really the sensor?
I almost bought 1 of these too. Cool edition he bought
I love dodge challenger
What's the name of that CZcams channel with the white z 28 and the split window Riviera
How did I know it was the V6. Every time they are a pain when I get a wrecked front end and replace radiator and coolant. The Hemis are fine. Its just the V 6s that suck
Let it go! 😂😂🎉
back on cars.
Thermos needs some therapy
Good plan to drive the car to the parts store so the engine can be as hot as possible the change the thermostat.
Thermostat is simple on the 3.6, use the Dorman aluminum one
Car has never seen O’Reilly’s in 100k miles apart from oil and filters….
Surprised he can afford the insurance on it...
Fix dash by vent... starting to pop apart
Cool you're becoming the wizard.
Nah, JR actually shows himself working, Wizard does nothing but talk about stuff that he did, even though 9 times out of 10 it's his employees that did the work.
Congrats on the 400k i wish I had 400 let alone 400k
You will hit it just keep the grind💪
@@AdelJeffreyJeffreysAuto thanks
The v6 in that car and the mustang are very underrated. Especially the mustang the v6 is a better motor and more reliable and easier to work on. They have plenty of power for a 2 door car. They just don’t have the street cred😢. I care a lot what other people think… nope!
What was the channel you drove by?
Does it tick?
hmmmm a dodge with bad thermostat, i wonder where ive heard that before 🤨🤨😐😐
Thick radiator 😩😩😩
💚
Hey
I still dont get how orilleys insnt a sponsor yet 😅
Once they see the pentastar engine, people just move on. No respect in the car scene 😢
Because, they are ticking time bombs. Especially the early one which like to yeet roller rockers. I had a Wrangler which had 4 motors between its frame rails. The original then three mopar builds in under 50,000 miles. Just found out it needs another (I have sold it since)…
@@sccarguy8242no question about it
I bought a 2023 R/T with a 6 speed last year, sold it a month ago. Depreciated like milk and it was in for 3 different warranty repairs in less than 6 months.
I had a black 2015 Challenger for 36k trouble free miles and then traded it in 2020 for an orange 2020 Challenger which now has 30k trouble free miles.
@@darrelhandgraaf7708 that's why I say I don't think it's a reliability issue, I think it's a quality control issue. Could get one that's a complete lemon, could get one that gets 150k trouble free miles.
dude has no repair skills
Not everyone has to.
The important part is he is learning and wants to.
Yo sup?
Anyone that makes fun of anyone that is willing to learn anything about something new is on the wrong side. At the same time you're helping the dude, he's learning new stuff, that's the right side.
2 minutes late and like number 22

so easy a cave man can do it
400k
Do you get sponsored by O'Reilly or what$
Funny video. You and Tanner are funny, good chemistry.
I wish for meat and potatoes
Who?
Thisssss
Literally watched a clip of Fast Times at Ridgemount High and Tanner sounds exactly like Jeff Spicoli 😂. But the Challenger looked like an easy fix 👍
Can't say I've noticed you chewing gum often. 🤔
Would be cool to have him bring it back and do a full tuneup and replace the coolant. Also need to ph test the coolant too.
There’s your problem, it’s a 3.6. It’s missing 2 cylinders.
A v6 challenger is such a useless vehicle.
Indicative of this generation. More worried about taking a pic of the repair and posting it than actually fixing it. Pathetic.
The double introductions are lame af.
I'm zooming so hard I don't even know what 9/11 was....
What?!? JR is actually going to work on an American CAR?!?
Made in Canada
lol I did the water pump on my Mackeys Garage channel on the same engine and only have 7 views and you got 25k and counting views 😢 my channel is sad and pathetic. I may quit CZcams bc I am not attracting any subs even though subscribers are free
That pentastar engine is super reliable and efficient but boy does it sound like dog shit. One of my neighbors has one with a muffler delete 🫠
