  • Assalamu Alaykum brothers and sisters. In this video i go over Whether or not its haram to meditate (Mindfulness meditation), The differing opinions, and what you could do to practice mindfulness without having to worry about doing anything haram (Muraqabah, Dhikr, Mindful salah and Quran Recitation)
Again, i apologize for anything i may have said wrong in this video, or any misinformation i may have spread. I have put my best efforts into making sure the information in this video is as authentic as possible through hours of research, but because I'm a fairly recent revert, and because this is a HIGHLY debated topic with many mixed opinions, please forgive me if i made any big mistakes, and correct me in the comments so i can learn more.

Some people say that “why don’t we meditate while thinking of Allah?” and the issue is why call it meditation and try to do it in the Buddhist way while thinking of Allah when we already have so many practices in Islam which are both peaceful for the mind and earning us rewards. Tahajjud, Dhikr, Adhkar, Reflecting on Allahs creation etc. I’d rather follow the man Allah made as our model rather than mix in practices from other religion with Islam.

I call it Being Mindful, angry? don’t react. Lazy? overcome it. Be in a state of muraqabah, Allah is always watching, be more aware of your thoughts, feelings and actions. Attain ihsan, be aware of Allah, shaytan, your actions. Become more aware of the distance between a thought and an action.
1- Choose a time of day, a quiet secluded area, and a comfortable posture for yourself.
2- Focus awareness on your natural breathing, relax muscle tension throughout your body.
3- Perceive the feeling of muraqaba, know and feel that Allah is watching you, silence that inner dialogue and focus on being with Allah in the present moment, when you get distracted do dhikr. (our prophet saw used to things like that)
→ The goal is to buid a natural habit to be in that state of muraqaba, thoughts will begin to appear, which will give you more time to decide to act on the good and dispel the bad, and that's powerful.

Muraqabah is actually the legit way to meditate in Islam. It's from Tasawwuf (which is now known as Sufism and is tbh tainted with all kinds of innovation and shirk elements). Tasawwuf is a science of islam which deals with cleansing and purification of heart and nafs (or ego). It has been an integral part of Islam which has unfortunately been abandoned by the masses because of the innovations that crept into it. Being a Salik (or one on the path of spiritual cleansing) is very important and and Muraqabah helps a lot in it.
And it's none of the crazy Sufi dancing or chanting you hear from the internet. All you do is sit with your head lowered and imagine the mercy of Allah ta'ala (which is always bestowed upon us) is descending onto your spiritual heart and it, out of gratitude, is uttering "Allah, Allah, Allah". Your tongue doesn't move, your body doesn't move. There's no change in your breath. Everything remains the same. It's an actiom of your heart.
And we persist so much, subhanallah, because we have monkey brains, we're used to not being focused, that it irritates us.
And that's why Muraqabah (or meditation) is so vital. It allows us to disconnect from all the chaos of the dunya (world) and allows us to focus on our Creator. For Allah said in the Qur'an "We did not create humans and jinns, except to worship us (ie, Allah)". It teaches us to be in a state of Wuqoof-e-Qalbi (literally translates to standing of the heart, meaning, being mindful of the fact that we are present before Allah, and that Allah is always watchful of us). It teaches us taqwa (God-consciousness) and being mindful of God.

      czcams.com/play/PLTgDm4XwxaRIJCWyAO-isyCku250Q4mTd.html - On Tasawwuf
If you researching about Muraqabah/Tasawwuf, I request you not search above it information from deviant people may come up promoting their ideologies and teachings. Rather, the channel link I sent above are reliable, their aqeedah (creed/belief) and deen is good, alhamdulillah. Please consult local scholars for the same and don't rely on Sheikh Google to learn about Islam.
May Allah bless you, increase you in beneficial knowledge and wisdom, and make you a means to spread his religion, ameen.

Dhikr and istighfar is such a massive meditation for some. I like it and i have wanted to incorporate it more and more. Istighfar is literally something that should be on our tongues constantly, we are recommended to say it 100 in the morning and evening. But there's no limit to it, and pretty much every dhikr. The rewards and ranks one climbs from saying dhikrs are crazy it's almost unbelievable that just from invoking these sacred ancient holy words from the creator it brings so much power to us. It takes like 1-2 minutes max to say 100 istighfars, we can do 200-300 even 1000 if we just give 10 minutes a day. I like to imagine that by doing this then on the final day you'll get to see where you ranked in these words from all of mankind. Most people would have said istighfar 100 times a day and evening, imagine seeing yourself come above like 99% of mankind with like 500-1000 a day in ANY of those words i pray to the lord it holds weight. I mean these are words spoken by prophets, angels, so many so surely being amongst the people who said allahu akbar the most brings you closer to the lord.
You could therefore associate meditation in Islam with dhikr as it's literally beneficial to your wordly life and afterlife and it's so easy you can sit down and focus and do it or even do it on the train or bus.

Dhikr is meditation! And if one does it correctly, it can be profoundly life changing.
Hear me out: there are different sorts of meditation, such as breathing meditation, transcendental meditation, etc. with the latter being heavily publicized by many prominent figures of their craft (such as Ray Dalio, David Fincher, etc.).
I’d like to focus on transcendental meditation (TM) because of how it’s relevant to the topic. Basically you take a resting position, close your eyes, repeat a set of sounds or words (which they refer to as mantras), and keep repeating them in your mind while focusing solely on those words. This approach makes it easier to meditate, as the buddhist approach of fully emptying the mind can be more challenging. Nevertheless, focusing on a set of mantras happens to be super effective, as it can effectively quiet the mind and allow to access deeper states of consciousness.
Now how does this all relate to islam? Upon further research of TM, I noticed that some mantras literally includes names that are nearly similar to Allah’s (SWT) 99 names and attributes (Creative Wisdom pronounced in Hindu/Sanskrit). However, this is where corruption of the Adversary creeps in, as I’ve seen various TM tutors reciting names of entities/djinns that some would view as deities, and for me this straight shirk. I mean when you’re fully in on the mediation and you’re calling on a djinn it’s like you’re invoking it, something any pure monotheist would never do.
When I connected the dots, the conclusion is that we actually do have transcendental meditation in islam, and we call it Dhikr! (Which is repeating a set of expressions or “mantras” glorifying the Creator). And the beauty of it is that we meditate, calling upon the Creator alone.
However, I realized that I have been doing it wrong, as the dhikr lacked the concentration/meditative part which we may refer to as khushue. With all this in mind, I went to give it a brand new try and boy was it LIFE CHANGING. To every muslim reading this, I sincerely recommend the following:
    - after finishing your fard prayer (especially asr), and finishing your duas, resume in a comfortable position on the floor, and proceed to commence dhikr.
    - close your eyes, and start repeating one specific expression glorifying Allah (SWT) (such as la ilaha ila Llah; astaghfiru Llah; ya Rahmanu ya Rahim…) for an indefinite number of times, until the Words integrate into your deeper consciousness. Here what I found effective, is to repeat the expression in the mind instead of via pronunciation.
    - if it’s your first time start by doing it for at least 5-10 mins.
    - if you do it sincerely with the selfless love for Allah (SWT), I swear by the Almighty, that you will start experiencing states of awareness that are extremely abstract yet so healing, as the mind forgets everything and focuses on only the glorification of Allah (SWT).
    - I can go on for hours writing on the depth of such experience, but in brief, subhanaAllah (SWT), experiences like these made see the deeper truths of the Quran and some of its verses, and I can imagine how it can strengthen the hearts, because indeed there’s so much more than this fleeting dunya…
I hope however took the time reading this would actually go and try it. I promise that if you do it with sincerity you will see things differently. Wa sallamu alaikkum

Meditation, mindfulness, mindfulness meditation, or whatever you want to call it, is like exercise for the brain.
You observe your brain, noticing when your focus shifts to something (thoughts, feelings, sensations, etc.), and you consciously bring your focus back to your anchor (your breath or whatever you choose to focus on). This trains your brain's ability to notice when you're distracted and bring yourself back to the present.
Remove any religious associations with meditation, like what Buddhists or Hindus might do (Allah help us all), and essentially what you're left with is a mental workout.
This has numerous benefits. To put it in perspective, it leads to more focus and attention while reading the Holy Quran, more presence while praying our 5 daily prayers, more connection while making our duas. And of course, there are more benefits when we indulge in other activities like deep work, our reactions to different emotions, etc.
Meditation is exercise, my brothers and sisters.

Jazaakum Allahu khayran for your approach. I appreciate how you gave the pros & cons & nuances, stating that much of it has its roots in other religions (which is forbidden for us) while mentioning that there are other methods that are free from that which you are not really sure about. I had a strong stance against meditation because until recently I've only known the religious type & can't understand why a muslim would want to mimic monks & swamis etc. Now I want to see what other types there are that are free from religious roots & to see if we got better at dhikr & du'a with presence of heart & mind , khusu' in salah, tadabbur & tafakkur of the Qur'an, being more aware of Allah's names, attributes & His signs in creation would we get similar but better & broader results or something completely different & these other types of meditation could be supplementary if they turn out not to go agsinst Islam.

    Assalamu Alaikum dear brother,
I am delighted to see another young Muslim man focused on self-improvement. Researching the permissibility of various acts in Islam can be challenging, but your videos have made it easier for me. I would greatly appreciate it if you could create another video discussing meditation in more detail, including its roots and different types such as mindfulness meditation, focus meditation, and loving compassion meditation. It would be helpful if you could also cite relevant Islamic sources and address the level of permissibility for each type.
I have conducted some research on this topic, but I have found that sources often discuss one aspect without delving into others. For instance, while yoga involving certain poses are deemed haram, there is little discussion about its different types, such as rhythmic breathing, clearing the mind, being in the present moment, or focusing on breath and bodily sensations. These practices may appear halal on the surface, but they may have underlying religious implications. I am hopeful that you can shed light on this subject and assist others facing similar dilemmas.
I understand that you may not be a scholar or have ample time, but I believe you possess a unique combination of in-depth knowledge about both topics and an understanding of their benefits. Your insights would be invaluable in addressing this matter. Thank you for your consideration and potential assistance.

Muslim prayer is meditation because you have to have khushu (The meaning of Khushu` is to perform prayer in a tranquil and unhurried manner, when prostrating and bowing, between the two prostrations, and after bowing when standing up again. It is to have complete focus of mind and humility).

Like yourself, there are areas in Islam where I lack knowledge, but I like to think that Salah contains aspects of both Meditation and Mindfulness especially in the Masjid.
I was told each Salah should be a conversation with Allah(swt) where we recite his holy words and perform them with Khushu(deep concentration).
In the Masjid, the Imam gives instructions to go shoulder to shoulder and fill in the gaps, so it's like we should also be aware of the people we stand/sit next to.
Another thing about reading Qur'an is that we should take some time to reflect and contemplate on the meaning, to understand it and apply it to ourselves as it's a book of guidance.

Salam brother, interesting point you made around 3:48 regarding innovation. There is consensus by the 4 Islamic schools of thought that “good innovations” exist. Unfortunately many people believe that a specific scenario not happening during the time of the prophet ﷺ is deemed an innovation, however this is not the case. The scholars such as imam Shafii’ have defined an innovation as something that 1. Has no basis in the religion and 2. Contradicts the Quran and sunnah.
There is a Hadith that states, “He who introduces some good practice in Islam which was followed after him (by people) he would be assured of reward like one who followed it, without their rewards being diminished in any respect.”
We also know of many examples from the likes of the companion Umar, who in a Hadith described the taraweeh prayer as “a good innovation”, and there are also various narrations from Ibn Umar describing things as good innovations, such as the duha prayer.
Some examples of good innovations would be the compilation of the Quran, the compilation of Arabic grammar, the compilation of Islamic law books and books of aqidah, the minarets on mosques, mics being used for prayer, Islamic schools, etc.
There are many many more Hadith supporting this such as the Hadith of the companion Bilal praying constantly praying 2 rakah after Wudu *without telling the prophet saaw*, and when the prophet ﷺ found out about this he said he heard his footsteps in jannah, or the Hadith of the man who would add words to the prayer after the bowing and has angels flocking to write good deeds.
Regarding the Hadith that “All innovations are misguidance”, this is referring to blameworthy innovations. The word كل in Arabic is used for generality, not universality, and there are many examples of this usage in both the Quran and Sunnah.

    أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ
“Lo! In the remembrance of the name of Allāh do the hearts find peace”
therefore, through Murāqabah, one will certainly attain peace and comfort.
Generally, Muraqaba is carried out by clearing one’s thoughts of everything besides Allah. Thereafter, a person turns his spiritual gaze and attention completely and exclusively towards Allāh. He meditates upon the fact that Allāh is constantly watching every single move he makes and every thought that crosses his mind. Similarly, one can also focus his/her mind on death, the burial process and the questioning of the grave, etc.
Meditation that is linked to any religious or cultural group general contains acts, positions or chants that reflect that particular religion or culture. Such practices mostly contravene the laws of Shari’āh. Hence, any such type of meditation that reflects any aspect contrary to Sharī’ah or has links to another religion, such as yoga, will be impermissible in Sharī’ah. It is necessary to stick to the Islamic method of meditation. Another remedy that may help the sister is recitation of the Qur’ān. Allāh mentions in the Qur’ān:

I have did meditate on daily basis, but mostly not every day. Things may come in which I cannot do the meditate stuff because of others priority to do, but instead I am still do 5 times pray as a muslim. While until around 2 years when I have been meditate, it was still bugging to me as if this is permissible in islam or not. But while watching your video and have deep research before, As I did this practice, I did this by the purpose before going into my daily basis especially for my bad habit, to help me cope my bad behaviour, to get better at knowing god and become more focused. This is also make me easier to pray, once I got distracted when praying I'll retry it again since my self-awareness is improved. I have been pray and usually almost 2-3 times retried to start again the salah from first when I got distracted which result in forgot of rakat, while before I was rarely to focus while praying and did not know what my purpose to this prayer. The benefit is true, but I am not using the "Om" enchantment or using other cultural mantra from others religion, I use the apps called Brainapps and Balance that was available on the smartphone. Also, it was not an obligation for muslim to do the meditation because what I do in this meditation is for health reasons. Before doing and go further into meditation, I read the benefits because I have a lot of issues which can be handled by using meditation. Other people is not in mandatory to use this in my opinions as Salah pray is enough. I have a problem with myself, family and stuff before doing the meditation and this is not final tools for me. I am either still learning. Btw, thanks for the video, greetings from Indonesia. Terimakasih :)

It's just my experience so i'm sorry if this wrong by some people, in Islam dzikr means remembrance, their mandatory and optional prayer times also can be define as dzikr as well, the actual remembrance in this context is "nothing to focus on" (nothing doesn't mean empty because "empty" is still a thing, the dead person doesn't feel emptiness in their tomb), in the muslim prayers there are 3 things that should be aware to accomplish the dzikr / remembrance process, 1. the body moves, 2. the mouth says the word, 3. the silence (not the absence, but the presence with silence) of mind and the heart, so "nothing to focus on is the job that ONLY for the mind and heart", the body and mouth is still mandatory to move and say the prayer because thats how the body and mouth doing dzikr, and the "nothing to focus on for mind and heart" is the concept of tawheed itself that says if we think or feel anything that's not the God bcoz Allah creates anything, so in the prayer or dzikr process if our mind and our heart doesn't think and feel anything it will automatically goes to(?), so the body moves, the word says the word, the mind/heart goes to(?) is basic way to pray/shalat in my experience
And if the muslims was getting used to it because they pray min. 5 times/day, they also can be in dzikr state outside of prayer whenever they want to, it helps to find ideas and inspiration, it helps to find the way to solve the most problem in life because there is a God before doing something
The thing that makes me curious is when the time has come, the sacratul maut, if we can keep/controlling the state of dzikr, does that mean we can actually Rest In Peace?

as well as making your mind think positively and focusing on your goals.. fixing your way of thinking.. trying to come up with ideas to fix your problem or depression.. trying to fix your mental health by thinking about how to solve your negative mental thoughts.. although in all cases .. prayer and reading quran is definitely a must to do when you aren't doing well.. this still does not mean that i am not allowed to think or consiously drive my thoughts to be more ambitious and peaceful as well as mentally prepared and deciplined and not lazy.. hope this helps :D

It's interesting to listen to you. You seem intelligent and open, but as with almost every revert, your view of the religion is very simplistic. Muraqabah is practiced by Sufi Muslims who were the Muslim majority for centuries until the peak of colonization and finally the end of the Ottoman Empire.
As with Muslims in general, also Sufis in particular tend to be quite diverse, some appearing to be more strict or "conservative" and others appearing to be more "liberal". I have to put those in quotation marks, because terms like these completely distort those phenomena of Muslim practice. In the end, if you look into debates about interpretation of scripture deeply, you will see that everyone has their way to defend their understanding of practice. After all they openly practice those things as Muslims and they genuinely see themselves as justified as Muslims, so it isn't that easy to tell they are deviant. It's what they understand about the religion.
If you ever come across the right material you will see that concepts like innovation and imitating other people are understood in very different ways by different scholars and that very simplistic understandings of them very even practiced by the first generations of Muslims who were closest to the revelation.
It was intriguing for me to look even at this title and then what you said about muraqabah. You have to consider that every single part of the religion in every single group of Muslims is developed over time. Hadith collections, even the Quran as a physical book, jurisprudence (fiqh), principles of jurisprudence (usul al fiqh), the different schools of theoretical theology (aqeedah, which you might not know, like ashariya, maturidiya, athariya) and then also spirituality (tasawwuf), those are all developed over the centuries and could be considered innovations. But those are not seen as bad. The truth is that innovations are not inherently bad. What is now seen by scholars as necessarily part of Islam was foreign for early Muslims.
As for Tasawwuf or Sufism, it's the discipline that features muraqabah. So-called turuq, spiritual brotherhoods, flourished in the Muslim world. They had their own spiritual master (shaykh) and differed in the details of their practices which all aim at purifying the practitioners heart and bring you closer to God. Dhikr is a practice you see in all of them but the specifics differ. Muraqabah is something you see a lot, especially with Naqshbandis. They are a specific tariqa (singular of turuq). The turuq are somewhat comparable to the different schools of thought in fiqh which you hopefully know, Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii, Hanbali. However, the analogy as many problems and I just bring it hope for clarification in a very simplified manner.
Yes, there you will also find many developments and new practices, but some of those people would see being called "liberal" an attempt of offense. Haha. After all, they dan justify it in their understanding of revelation. Also Tasawwuf is like a science. People try something out and see that it works, just as with how meditation is studied scientifically now. Of course, they had different ways of testing back then. They would see that it makes them more focused on God, increase their trust and conviction. Also there are spiritual experiences, unveilings, knowledge received directly from God. The Sufi masters gain those. There are deep areas of theology around those topics. This tradition was an essential part of Islam.
Since you have an open mind, I recommend you to look into these topics. I would suggest certain sources and offer to have a conversation, if interested.
For now I would recommend starting with al-Ghazali and his "Alchemy of Happiness". Then I would recommend Rumi. You can read him directly or the wonderful compilation by Chittick, "The Sufi Path of Love".
