  • Assalmau alaykum. First of all, i apologize for not uploading for so long, I've been kinda unproductive lately but now I'm back to normal Inshallah.
Anyways, in this video, i go over the points for and against music being haram. I try to be as objective as possible but I wont deny that unfortunately some of my sources may have been biased. Regardless, i may have made many mistakes in this video, so please let me know in the comments if you notice any.
The points I go over in this video are:
Why exactly do people say music is halal?,
The hadith about music being haram (Bukhari 5590),
The tafsirs that interpret verse 6 of Surah Luqman as referring to music
(Abdullah Ibn Masoud and Abdullah Ibn Abbas),
    The authenticity of the chains,
Exceptions (The duff/daff and tambourine, only on Eid, and only women can play it),
    Nasheeds, etc

Thanks for your answer though. I wasn't saying that its all sunshine and rainbows in the practical application of the law. I mean to say the intention and the ideal use of it is like that. For example, dealing with interest is forbidden in Islam (although it's impossible to avoid in the modern world, so we try our best), and so (I think, don't quote me:) it would have been illegal for all non-muslims as well in islamic societies (because it is something that affects everyone; as in, it could be used to take advantage or extort someone)
Regarding the scholars, I'm not well read about al-munajjid. I do know that he is particularly controversial and harsh in his rulings, which could have been a reason for you picking him. You probably mentioned Ibn tamiyyah for a similar reason, through his most well known fatwas that were issued during a time of war against Mongols, twisted into a modern narrative by groups like Daesh that justifies killing innocent Muslims and the killing of other innocents.

David composed music. The Quran doesn’t state anything negative about music. If it’s not in the Quran and is also debated then why even think about it?
There’s more pressing matters to worry about and more concrete rules to maintain.
If your listening to music that promotes haram things then of course this is wrong. But it’s clearly not a black and white area to just flat out say every form of music is haram when one of gods prophets composed music in the name of god.

Stopping or reducing music consumption as part of a "dopamine detox" involves limiting activities that regularly release dopamine to allow your brain's reward system to reset. Music, particularly when it's enjoyed, can trigger the release of dopamine. A dopamine detox, in this context, is often about reducing stimuli that constantly activate your brain's reward pathways.
By taking a break from music, you give your brain a chance to recalibrate its response to stimuli, potentially making it more sensitive to everyday experiences. This detox can help you appreciate simpler pleasures and reduce dependency on external stimuli for satisfaction. It's a method aimed at breaking the cycle of seeking constant dopamine hits from various sources, encouraging a more balanced and mindful approach to pleasure and reward.

The point of the said comment above is simply by limiting yourself to it, just like other things. Music is not necessarily bad & it could be i agree since "too much" is always bad no matter what the referred thing is, but by completely forbidding it & punish those who refuse to prevent it with jail, death & torture like how the Taliban enforces it to their own Afghan Citizens? Objects in Islam are innocent, they are neither haram nor halal, they are neither sinful nor blessing. Haram and halal are basically determined by "the specific action" that are done using such objects in a "specific way" and in a "specific context or situation".
Furthermore, an action can be haram or halal depending on at least 3 criterias:
    1) Is the "niat" (intention/goal/purpose) good or bad (to ourselves and other creatures)?
    2) Is the procedure good or bad (to ourselves and other creatures)?
    3) Is the impact good or bad (to ourselves or other creatures)?
If all of these criterias are good, then it is halal. If one or a few are bad, it could be either makrooh (permissible but not recommended) or haram (completely forbidden). If all are bad, it's most likely haram.
Example 1: Is alcohol haram or halal?
The answer is neither. Alcohol is an object, its is neutral. What is haram is the ACTION of drinking that alcohol, because the IMPACT of drinking alcohol is bad for ourselves (it could destroy our bodily functions), and even when drunk, we could harm othee people around us (bad for other creatures).
Example 2: Is killing haram or halal?
The answer is neither. Killing is neutral. It can be halal ONLY IF it is done for survival or defense (good intention) when any other methods are no longer possible. However, it can be haram if it is done because of rage or hatred (bad intention), done in such a horrific way (bad procedure), and caused more damage than good (bad impact).
Example 3: Is eating haram or halal?
Neither. Eating is neutral. It is halal when you eat healthy food in the exact proportion you need. It could be haram when you eat to showcase your social status (bad intention), or you eat too much food that may cause some failures in your health (bad impact), or you eat food that you stole from other people or using money that you stole from other people (bad procedure).
Last example: Is music haram or halal?
Neither. Music is itself is neutral, but listening to music can be halal or haram depending on the contexts. Listening or playing music is halal for your own entertainment or healing. However, it can be haram if you play a music with a provocative messages (bad intention), or if you play it so loudly that you disturb your neighbors (bad impact), or you play it too much that you forget anything else (bad procedure).
End quote: Islam is simple. Let's keep it that way.

@@Adar195 Yes, I believe that would be better. I am sorry I didn't provide any sources. I simply summarized what I believe as the full concept or conclusion of how haram and halal in Islam are defined, based on a series of other people's interpretations, debates and discussions, and my own observations when thinking deeply about Islamic rulings.
The reason why I concluded that haram and halal are highly situational and based on at least 3 things (purpose, procedure, impact) is because I observed that these 3 things always appear whenever there is a rule classifying if something halal or haram in the texts, whether implied or stated.
Let's take a look at the rule of "killing" as an example. Killing in Islam is both permissible and forbidden. Killing is highly forbidden as stated in Surah Al-Maidah, verse 32. However, killing is also permissable in Surah At-Taubah verse 123.
The big question is then "Why is there such contradiction? One allows it, while the other forbids it?"
Well, the answer is simple; The rule is not contradictive by any means, but it is HIGHLY SITUATIONAL. That is why, we CANNOT GENERALIZE one rule for EVERY SITUATION, because EACH SITUATION IS DIFFERENT and requires different approach in classifying the rule.
It is also why when reading the Qur'an or Sunnah, we MUST NOT become TOO TEXTUAL. We must also investigate its CONTEXTS or history, because only within the contexts can we find the true messages that God wanted to convey to us.
Killing is forbidden when there is no clear reason of doing so. It is considered one of the biggest sins a human could conduct. However, killing is permissable ONLY in the contexts of war or emergency.
It is that simple, and apparently every single rule in Islamic teachings follow this pattern. When there is a text that forbids something, usually you could find another texts that allows it, whether implied or stated. You will see texts that support one thing, and texts that are against the same thing. It is everywhere in Islam.
Now, the problem with muslims nowadays is that they become too textual, but they ignore contexts and reasons altogether. In fact, the biggest debates about Islamic rulings often happen among muslim scholars themselves, while actually the solution to those debates is really simple; IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE CONTEXTS.

@@Adar195 I know what you mean, but I hope you get the idea behind what I was trying to say, or at least the gist of it.
Some of the examples I showed to you were situations that were mentioned exactly in the texts, such as the rules about killing and drinking alcohol (they were in the Qur'an, not too hard to find). However, some of the other examples were not directly mentioned, but implied.
Again, not every single situation is mentioned in the Qur'an or hadith, and probably not all of them need to be. That is why, for the situations that are not directly mentioned, we muslims have to think for ourselves using the bits of hints here and there from the Qur'an or hadith, and if we cannot find them, we use agreements that are not against the core principles of the Qur'an and sunnah.
That being said, I believe that if you carefully scan the texts, you will still be able to find bits that are related to each of the examples above.
For example, I stated before that eating food you stole could be haram, because stealing in general is strictly prohibited as mentioned in surah Al-Maidah verse 38. Eating too much is also hinted as haram, according to surah Al-A'raf verse 31. But, eating in general is halal because... Well, do we even need to quote a Quranic text for this one?
Music can be halal, because there was a hadith revealing that the prophet Muhammad attended one of his companions' wedding, and he allowed the singers there to continue their action (see hadith compilation by Bukhari or Ibn Majah). Atbthe same time, it can be haram according to another hadith that put music together with other sins, on the same sentence. It all depends on the situations.
I hope this clears up everything.

But it has a psychological effect on humanbeings. Thats proven science. Researchers have seen anomalies such as dopamine overdose happening in brain as soon as someone hears the music, or any other sound that seems to have a repetitive element, listening to music seems to be a virtual drug like effect thats manipulative and mind-altering. It interferes with the person's natural perception to the point that they end up feeling something that they were not supposed to feel.

Very good to see you interested in knowing more the religion, especially when you re just 16 or so. Id suggest to look at the Fiqh Encyclopedia for all jurisprudence topics, it gives proofs, opinions and all important information about the topic. To be honest music isnt really much of a divisive topic though, the 4 main schools of jurisprudence mostly agree on music being overall forbidden, differences could occur in details and types of instruments but overall music is not seen positively, unlike for example drawing living beings in which the maliki madhab for example has it permitted while other dont. Id suggest my friend if you can to also start learning Fiqh, as one cannot directly project hadiths and extract the judgements on things without having the tools, as you said you are not a scholar but i think it is pretty interesting to know how scholars issue fatwa and their diverse thinking especially Fiqh al moqaran.

Yes my Arab Brother, A sane person would rather be thrown in hell just because of loving & listening to music than be thrown in this imaginary heaven full of 72 virgins for killing their kafir relatives that they've been close with at some point of their lives. Kafir Relatives that've somehow a part of why they grow as a Human Being. They'd rather die & be in hell for being as harmless as a listener of music than being enforced to kill their well-being for First Cousin Incest & Pedophilia & later on justifying it through marriage. If you don't like music for it is a noise to your ears. Do not enforce others how to live their lives. Let us live our lives & learn from our mistakes. It's what makes a human, a human.

Peace. Just like you, I'm not a scholar but there are a few things I'd have to dissent to here. 1. have you considered alternate opinions of scholars that don't hold the view that music is haram? Such as the respected Muhaddith Imam Al-Shawkani, who said "Music is not something that should be strongly rebuked" in a quote that I found online from his book 'Al-Badr al-Tali'. I also heard about another book of his titled 'Nayl al-Awtar', a book that Sheikh Uthman has called amazing and was cited by IslamQA in the anti-music fatwa you linked in the description. In the book, he says:
"The people of Madinah and those who agreed with them from among the dhahiriyya and the Sufis maintain that singing is permissible, even when it is accompanied by a musical instrument such as the lute or the flute. Abu Mansur Al-Baghdadi ash-Shafi`i narrates that `Abdullah Ibn Ja`far saw nothing wrong in singing, and he, himself, used to compose the music for his own slaves who used to sing these melodies in his presence.”
    2. @1:55 You try to refute the idea that music isn't haram as long as it doesn't distract you from worshipping God or contains haram lyrics and you show a tafsir from Ibn Kathir @2:36 that describes 'idle talks' as singing; and If you look closely, you will see that idle talk is interpreted as singing that misleads people from the path of Allah. However, as you know, not all singing or music has haram lyrics or necessarily misleads people from the path of Allah, as some people have converted to Islam through music. So how does that argument hold up?
The tafsir also says"(purchases idol talks) is buying singing servant girls". Interestingly, I've found reports of companions owning slaves that played music, like this one: "Imam al-Haramayn mentioned in al-Nihaya that the trustworthy biographers reported that Abdullah ibn al-Zubair [may Allah be pleased with them both] owned slave girls who played the flute. Once, ibn Umar entered upon him and he had a flute by his side. Ibn Umar said: “O companion of the messenger of Allah! What is this?” Abdullah ibn Zubayr gave it to him and ibn Umar looked at it closely, and said: “Is this a Syrian flute?’ Ibn al-Zubair replied: “It is used to balance the minds." I haven't been able to find the specific origin for this, so forgive/excuse me if it's wrong.
    3. How can singing be 'idle talking' if wives will sing to their husbands in Jannah according to the hadiths, meanwhile the Quran says there won't be idle talk in Jannah?
"There they will never hear any idle or sinful talk, only good and virtuous speech" - Quran (56:25-26)
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam (may Allaah exalt his mention) said: “The wives of the people of Paradise will sing for their husbands in the sweetest voices that anyone has ever heard; among the things that they will sing is: We are the good and beautiful wives of noble people; we look at them (husbands) with delight in our eyes (i.e., with satisfaction).’ Another song will be, ‘We are eternal women who will never die; we are safe and will never feel fear; we are settled and will never leave (our husbands).” [At-Tabaraani, and Al-Albaani classified it as authentic].
    4. I read an Al Azhar fatwa by Grand Mufti Sheikh Jad Ul-Haq Ali that references the scholar Ibn al-Qaysarani which argues Surah 62 contradicts the anti music interpretation of Surah 31 because of how the Arabic word Lawh is used. Lawh refers to amusement or distraction.
"Yet no sooner than they saw some trading or amusement, they flocked to it and left you standing by yourself. Tell them: “That which is with Allah is far better than amusement and trading. Allah is the Best Provider of sustenance" - Quran 62:11
    The fatwa says:
"In this verse God has joined lahw (amusements with musical instruments) together with tijara (business or trade) using the grammatical particle wa (and) which means that the law and ruling that applies to one of them must apply to the other since they are joined together. We know that Muslims unanimously agree that tijara (business or trade) is permissible. Thus, in this verse the Quran is maintaining the status quo as far as the ruling regarding musical instruments is concerned since they were part of the Arab customs and culture before Islam. It is implausible to suggest that the Prophet might have prohibited musical instruments (before this incident took place) and yet when the musical troupe passes by the door of the Masjid God chooses not to reveal a single verse at that very moment clearly and finally stating that musical instruments and music are prohibited (haram) but instead He chooses to merely scold and reprimand (itaab) the people who left the Prophet standing while they went to listen to the musical troupe. It is also impossible to imagine that the Prophet would choose not to clearly state through sunna his ruling regarding music after this Friday incident. Therefore, the ruling regarding music or musical instruments will be based on the principle of permissibility (in other words we know that Music was permissible and we do not have any verse or sunna to prove that this changed). This can further be supported by the tradition reported by Aisha that she got one of her Ansari maids married to an Ansari man and upon hearing this, the Prophet suggested, why did you not all go to the wedding accompanied by lahw (amusement with instruments) as you know that the Ansari people love lahw. This tradition has been recorded by al-Bukhari in his Sahih under the chapter of marriage (Sharh Umdat al-qari ala sahih al-Bukhari 20/146 in the footnote of the previous source).
My apologies if the comment was too long. If I sounded too personal, it wasn't intentional. I hope you investigate it more, have a lovely day!

You make a good point, though I think it’s somewhere in the middle- Like music can become haram if it becomes an addiction, therefore becoming a distraction, as well as the message. What is the song promoting? Is it promoting haram things like drugs and violence, or God and faith ? I think there is no definitive yes or no, but it depends on the frequency of your consumption of music and what kind of music you are listening to !

You know as much as i hate to admit it, i do sometimes listen to music and enjoy it, knowing that it's possibly haram, but doing something wrong, being awear of it, and telling everyone that it's haram, is significantly better than saying it's halal trying to justify my wrong deeds.

I build my whole life around music. Made Money with music, my skills and time went all into music, listening, making, mixing and recording others. Allah swt guided me away from it, and I never accepted it. Once I understood that everything comes from Allah and I studied my religion (and gave up music completely, started praying first time in my life) I realized that it was my test. Nobody can tell me it's impossible to live without music. Thats the same as drug addicts, they think they can't do it without and life is not worthy to be living without. That shows the level of brainwash they did on us. Music was never that strong in the general population. Now its so deep in peoples lives even kids who are 8 are influenced more by degenerate artists who are number 1 in the charts than by their own parents. Just think about this

When talking about Music being Haram is Islam you have to look at that subject from cultural and contextual standpoint, the Cultural aspect probably comes from Muslim knowledge of Subsaharan pagans who use instruments like drums to specifically invoke their "ancestral spirits" and the contextual aspect is discussed in this video, Alhamdulillah

While I do think the issue of music being haram should be explained, the point of the khilaf isn’t really in the hurmah but in the definition of Music. Like what did Ibn Mas’ud consider to be music and what was considered not. Nowadays we can define everything as music from the chirping of birds to the handcrafted guitar. The issue is also more nuanced because we have to determine is the sound of the instrument haram or the instrument itself. So there’s no blanket statement that can be made that “Music is haram” without leaving people without a definition and leaving them confused.

ASA akhi, you are a very intelligent kid mashallah especially considering your age. Just remember that for something to be deemed as 100% haram, it must be blatently said in either the Quran or in an undeniably authentic hadith that prescribes a punishment to it. Further, if the argument that music/instruments is haram is true, saying that it becomes halal of days like Eid or wedding is contradictory. If you examine anything that is undeniably haram in Islam, i.e. alcohol, theft, gambling, riba, etc, you will never come across a rule in which it becomes halal during prescribed days/times. Islam is a highly logical relgion alhamdulilah, so instruments specifically being haram does not make much sense and can enter upon a state of extremism and feeling like you're trapped especially since music has become such an integral part of this world. I definitely agree that music should be avoided if you feel that its distracting you from Islam, and if it contains profanity. Moreover, I agree that sahih al-Bukhari is of the most authentic hadith collections, however it is important to consider that there are certain hadiths in his collection that are not directly attributed to bukhari himself, including 5590. Regardless, i applaud you for seeking the truth mashallah, but it's still important to consider difference of opinion especially when discussing if something (that is not blatently clear in the Quran/undisputed hadith, is halal/haram. May Allah grant you many rewards inshallah
