Do Muslims Need Stoicism?

  • In this video, i go over the striking amount of similarities between Islam and stoicism, as well as what stoicism actually is, and why Islam is better than stoicism. I think Muslims should look into and follow stoicism, but only to a degree, i also believe that most of what stoicism teaches can be found in Islam, yet again proving the credibility of Islam. (It proves the credibility of Islam because stoic teachings have been adapted for use in modern psychology, with real proof and papers supporting that the mindsets developed by stoicism are very healthy for the brain)
I hope you all enjoy this one as much as you did the last one, i loved reading all of your nice comments (although i wasn't able to reply to all of them, sorry about that).

I love this video and I would like to add some extra information, it involves prophet abraham (Ibrahim) as in Islam, basically Abraham was a pure hearted child who was born in this kingdom Babylon, his whole kingdom use to worship these idols which were statues, I won’t explain the whole story because I just wanna get to the moral of it, but I would recommend learning about the whole story by either watching a video (lots of videos about the story of Ibrahim a.s) or reading certain verses that included Ibrahim in the Quran, Anyways I’m gonna fast forward to the point where the story is related to stoicism, Ibrahim goes up to his father and informs him about allah and that Ibrahim is afraid for his dad of the punishment of allah, (hellfire) so he says multiple stuff, (there are verses in the Quran about what he says in surat Maryam I’m pretty sure) and Ibrahim talks in a very caring manner and urgent one, afterwards the response of his father was just reckless, basically he said if you persist in this way of thinking and continue to not worship these idols, I will stone and I will never want to see you’re face, (of course the Quran said it in the best of ways and described it beautifully but I’m just trying to give a brief explanation) anyways I’m not that sure but I think that Ibrahim was 10-16 years of age at that time, I like to imagine me being Ibrahim and my father saying that to me, what would my response be? Most of us (of course not most of us im just saying the people who are not knowledgeable of this stuff) would be shocked and heart broken at a response like that, we would complain to allah about why he made us live in this family and blah blah blah, but you know what Ibrahim’s answer was? سلام عليك “peace be upon you” i will repent to allah for you, Look at the strength of this prophets heart, how? Submitting himself to allah, as long as he has allah, why should I bother to indulge in any negative emotions, it’s his استسلام to allah (his surrendering) which really matters after wards his kingdom was furious about him going to the people and informing them about allah so they prepared a fire that was said to have taken 2 weeks, and if any birds came above it, they would be sizzled, this fire was to burn Ibrahim they readied a catapult and put him inside, his reaction was as if nothign was happening, he knew this is the plan of allah, so in return allah made the fire cold for him and peaceful for Ibrahim, now Excluded lots of details and other useful information because I didn’t want this t comment to be long(it’s already hella long and I don’t think anyone will read this but I’m just trying to inform my fellow friends) if you want the full story I would recommended reading the verses involving him and just learning about his story via google or CZcams
The moral of the story is surrendering yourself to allah is better than stoicism, because if you have allah on your side allah can do the impossible for you and there’s an ayah that really expresses this which is :بلى من أسلم وجهه لله وهو محسن فله أجره عند ربه ولا خوف عليهم ولا هم يحزنون the English translating is “But no! Whoever submits themselves to allah and does good will have their reward with their lord and there will be no fear for them nor will they grieve” this is exactly what Ibrahim did and look at what happened to him he wasn’t sad nor nothing, he was surrendered to allah, this is a skill we all need, I like to name it استسلام (surrendering) and if we can get this skill and improve it, nothing will stop us
Waking for fajr shows that you are surrendered to allah
    Praying tahajud
Saying bismillah before everything (even playing a game)
Intending to do everything for allah only
I myself have honed this skill and I promise you life has never been better because all this is just preparation for jannah inshallah
I don’t think anyone will read this lol

Once I strated following Islam by heart, I realised that no philosophical concepts can come close to Islam.
Islam has everything, everything a man need. Once you start to put a little bit of effort to follow the teachings of prophet Muhammad pbuh, you will find yourself getting better and better as a person.

As a stoicism fan and a not very knowledgeable muslim. I enjoyed this video alot because it brought me closer to islam. I self-studied stoicism (mainly by watching Micheal Sugrue's lecture on stoicism on youtube) and trusted it a lot more than the teachings of islam. But, now that I am getting more educated about islam I'm starting to see how it is even better than stoicism. 👍

I read a book about stoicism once, and that keep remind me about Islam and I thought, "oh, isn't Islam like this too?"
like, we have things that we can control and things that we can't, and we prioritize those that can be controlled. Just like in Islam, we keep doing things as usual (study, work, go outside) but we also must surrender to Allah Swt. because we don't know what and when the unexpected things will happen.
And now I learn that you don't have to be "Stoic" to find "wisdom", because stoicism is already part of Islam, you just need to be a good Muslim.

Wonderful to see young brother exploring these topics.
Ultimately while stoicism certainly has many positive tools for good mindset, it lacks a value and foundation based on Divine revelation and prophet (s) guidance. So it can't answer what is good what is evil, why be good and not be evil, and what is our ultimate meaning.
When we speak of Islam, we speak of the one who created all existence giving us a path back to Him, a path which nourishes and gives us success in this life and next. After all our whole reason for existence is to know an worship Him and prepare for our meeting with Him.

Salam alaykum brothrr. Allah (SWT) got the CZcams algorithm giving me a good video alhamdulilah. Stoicism is a philosophy I was (and still am to an extent) very interested in even before I started practicing Islam. Both ways teach you that this life is temporary and not to get attached to material things. I was reading on the Shortness of life by Seneca and there was quote saying "All life is servitude, so you have to get used to the circumstances". I found this similar to what was said in Surah Al-Baqarah in the final ayat "Allah does not burden a soul more than it can bear" [2:286]. Seneca said that quote before this verse was revealed. Was he exposed to the message of Islam? Only Allah (SWT) knows. However what makes Islam superior is that it gives you a reason why, a purpose to why you are restraining yourself from your desires, praying 5 times a day, fasting, giving charity, doing hajj as a act of worship to Allah (SWT) in the hope of achieving the reward of Jannah. Stoicism teaches you how to live but not the purpose or the goal neccesary. Islam does. Barak Allah Fik brother.❤

Brother Jan, I'm so grateful to you for this video because it's dealing with one of the widely known philosophical concepts I couldn't find compared with Islam on CZcams. Not only are your comparative videos interesting, but they are also useful as they can help fellow brothers and sisters see the perfection of Islam and become more powerful in their perception of our religion. It would be nice to see a separate video on the differences between Islam and utilitarianism, for example. I wish you peace!

Mashallah, great video about an interesting topic. I especially liked the last part. I've tried to avoid reading stoic philosophers for quite some time now because of the whole "universe" thing, but to be completely honest, I can't deny that there is a lot of good practical advice given by them that can be separated from their metaphysical beliefs. I think I'll pick up some books about stoicism in the future, perhaps "Meditations" and "Letters from a Stoic".
