The Korean war was a bitter lesson for the mighty US military at the hands of the poorly equipped PLA. In recent years, every war game conducted by the US Think Tanks such as RAND & CSIS ended up with the same result. If American forces engage the PLA in the Taiwan strait region, the US will suffer huge losses and will be defeated. The US dare not get itself into a war with China directly, also a nuclear power. The US can't even handle the Viet Cong in the Vietnam war, or the Taliban in Afghanistan. The US will try to use proxies, as they used Ukraine to fight the Russians. In a recent Foreign Affairs article, three top US Chinese experts: Bonnie Glaser, Chen Weise, & Christensen are dispatched as unofficial vices to tell Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to cool it. Shut up about independence, don't make trouble for the US.
@@peanut0brain True enough, but the US always plays both tactical and strategic games. In the short term they can't handle Ukraine, Palestine then add the Taiwan Strait. It must restraint DPP from crossing the red line. 2024 is big election year. So true about Brexit. I hope Taiwan don't go down that route. That is why the Chinese government works because you have to have knowledge before voting.
You forgot to mention 2 important facts: 1) Scotland had their independence referendum in 2014 with a 55% vote for NO, not "we didn't let them"; the UK Govt refused ("didn't let them") their request for a 2nd referendum; quite rightly one can't have repeated voting until one gets the desired result! 2) China issued a White Paper on Taiwan Reunification in 2022, stating clearly it would not take Taiwan by force, with the exception when external separatist interference is involved (e.g. by another country, you know who); China doesn't want ANY war with anyone but will defend itself when necessary. I do not think important question like independence should be dealt with by public referendum, it should be left to experts. Brexit was a good example.
This is because Scotland and England had discussed in advance the possibility of future separation before the merger, that is, Scotland had the right to leave the United Kingdom. However, the UK would not allow Wales and Northern Ireland to become independent, and there was a protracted war.
He's clearly talking in bad faith if he forgets to mention that Scotland had a referendum. He gave the impression in the video that Scotland is not allowed a referendum. But they have already had it. In fact Quebec has had two referendums to leave Canada. So yes, the UK and Canada allow referendums to seceded from their own territory.
@@harisadu8998 A referendum on Scotland is one thing, whether it can leave is another. Scotland was allowed to vote because it was negotiated before joining the Kingdom, but Wales and Northern Ireland do not have this right, and the UK would not allow Northern Ireland to become independent even at the cost of war. The same thing applies to Canada. In addition, Catalonia also performed for you. Finally, don’t pretend to have forgotten a war called the American Civil War.
it was never the matter of referendum in human history, America wanted independence, and the overlord failed to hammer them, so it succeeded Catalonia wanted independence, and Spain just crushed them, so it failed, if one wants independence, he gotta fight the brutal war to get it
@@irone7050Even without talking about the national historical connection, the government of the Republic of China took away gold and talents belonging to the entire Chinese people when it fled to Taiwan, laying the foundation for Taiwan's subsequent development. However, the people of the mainland struggled for many years on the basis of poverty to rise. On the mainland of Chinese people deserve to enjoy the benefits of investing in Taiwan
By the ROC constitution, the territory encompasses the whole mainland China. And all mainlanders are ROC citizens .So a referendum must include the mainland to be legit. But we already know what the result will be if it goes ahead like that. Also by now most should have figured out voting does not prevent wars, is not the ultimate justice either. It is an action that bears its own consequences. The voters are seriously responsible for the consequences, especially when they include war and bloodshed.
As mentioned, Taiwan is but a province, just as Alaska, California and Hawaii are states, but I agree those states should secede, and Texas returned to Mexico.
Good points. In Europe and other places we claim democratic principles, but in fact representative democracy has never been worse than now. Like Sweden joining Nato: 350 odd politicians made it happen not anyone else was allowed to vote, AND even if we would so now, the propaganda for the last 2 years for Nato being the only option has been soo strong so now even if we vote, the results would be the same. This is truly a good example of manufacturing consent.
Thank you Luke for make this video and did street interview. As a Chinese American, I am very concerned about the Taiwan and mainland situation. When we talk about the two areas, we would say Taiwan and mainland China, instead of Taiwan and China, since Taiwan is part of China. One thing I have to point out is that TSMC isn’t the reason for mainland China wanting to take Taiwan. Mainland China wanted to take back Taiwan since 1949, decades before Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing even existed. Taiwan is strategically very important to China’s security concerns, not only it’s so close to mainland. By taking back Taiwan, China can break through the first island chain built by the United States in the Pacific and reverse the series of strategic plans the United States is strengthening to contain China in the Pacific. In addition, China suffered 35M casualties during the 14-year (1931-1945) Sino-Japanese War and took back Taiwan. The Chinese government would be overthrown if it looses Taiwan.
Taiwan Independence is not a dream. It is real and it is alive right now. The PRC has zero sovereignty over Taiwan whatsoever. Taiwan is de facto independent.
In the 20th century, China was very poor. Taiwan under the KMT was one of the 4 so-called Tigers and its GDP was about 40% of China. But now it is only about 4% of China's GDP. Most of Taiwan's Mainland Chinese descendants would not want independence
Many Taiwanese people do not want reunification because they believe that there is no democracy and no voting on the mainland. But what they don’t know is that if the mainland implements democratic voting, then if a candidate wants to unify Taiwan by force, he will receive the greatest support.
There is a house where your brothers and sisters all live. Now there is a room in the house that your brother says he has been living in and does not belong to this house. Because they have lived here for a long time. So it doesn't belong in this house. is it right?
The US does have a big say in Taiwan presidential election. In fact, any candidate has to go to America first to get approval if they really want to win. Taiwanese get used to that long time ago and most of people are brainwashed to believe that this is just normal because the US is a big brother who will sitck out for Taiwan if the war between mainland and Taiwan breaks out.
You don’t know much about Taiwan, Taiwan's media is also divided into two factions, those that are pro-China and those that are anti-China. Taiwanese can read information on either side and make their own judgments. Taiwanese people are not as "easily" misled as you think.
But now 80% of traditional media are "green", which means they are anti-China. You may find that various opinions are abundant on CZcams, but for people aged 40 to 59 who embrace traditional media, it can be found that the DPP has the highest support.
Not only is "Taiwan independence" a dream... it is not reality. Taiwan has historically always been a part of China for centuries. The United States even recognizes (at least on paper) that Taiwan is part of "One China" with their "Taiwan Relations Act". If the Americans feel that Taiwan should be independent.... then an even stronger case can be made for Hawaii independence from the US. Imagine how the US govt would feel if a foreign nation were to send delegates to Hawaii to meet with the Hawaiian Sovereignty groups there to discuss independence. I'm sure martial law would be declared on Hawaii. I'm 100% certain the American govt will never allow any type of independence for Hawaii.
@@jaydee6268 The People's Republic of China is the successor to The Kingdom of China (or Imperial China or China)... and Taiwan was and still is a part of it. As I said... even the United States of America's "Taiwan Relations Act" acknowledges in plain English that Taiwan is part of China.
Well the root cause of Taiwan issue is the US weapon manufacturers interest: can you find a better customer than TW? First , it is easy to make up such an enemy like China; Second, every body knows that the war won’t happen at all so the customer won’t find a chance to complain the product quality; thirdly, every candidate of TW election is competing by telling how nice the future customer will be; last but not least, there are so many official excuses to guarantee only the most profitable junks can dump to the customer. As you can see, how much are the sellers working hard to maintain the current status because they all know if the real war takes place, their value custom will surrender at day 1 and there won’t be any transaction after that! Game over!
I absolutely agree. It's not as simple as "let the people decide". It's not hard to foresee the US would exploit this and implement nuclear weapons and military bases on TW. TW would be militarily occupied , and hence a US vassal with no true sovereignty. Simply put, it's not about democracy and other rhetoric. See Japan and the Plaza Accord of 1985, and the Japanese economy since then. China must check US hegemony on TW. China cannot allow this to happen as this would amount to huge impact on the lives of Chinese people all over the world.
USA government says no to Native American independence, despite Native Americans have been in America for at least 10,000 years, whereas USA has been only less than a few hundred years. And there's Hawaii, a small island group in Polynesia, many thoudsand miles or km away from and not any part of America continent. Despite Hawaii is being illegally ocuppied by USA, the USA government doesn't allow independence for Hawaii and its indigenous Polynesian people.

Democracy is indeed flawed but it's the least immoral philosophy of governance that we have. Authoritarianism is way worse, entities with centralised powers by definition face no accountability and aren't incentivized to manage society efficiently. Self preservation and self interest is what comes first for those who have all branches of power (executive, legislative and especially judiciary). You need those powers democratically divided to manage society effectively. China's single party has control over all three branches of power. Even with elections, the people's republic of China, in its current form, is systematically undemocratic and is entirely owned by the ccp. Ccp has complete authority under every aspect over China. The ccp won't critique itself, disagree with itself and punish it self, the ccp has no accountability. Political menaces like the ccp should not be endorsed, sponsored or promoted. China needs major political reform.
As an added point, there's a lot of exploitable elements in the English language when it comes to the word, "Chinese". Unlike say, "being Jewish" is different from "being Israeli". There are overlaps in identity there, but there is also an understood difference. In the case of "Chinese", the English word does not distinguish being "中“ (中国 China nationality-wise) and being ”华"(ethnic lineage-wise). This ambiguity is not captured in English, and very much used to inconsistently to stir tension. That said, for an inheritor of the political legacy of the 中华民国 Republic of China (both 中 and 华), that saw through the succession of the last dynastic age of China, as well as the repulsion of the Japanese invasion (WW2), for such an inheritor to assert they are neither 中 nor 华 to me, is a sad matter. Of course there's nothing wrong if as an individual human being, the person feels the American way of life fits them better and they would thrive much better there -- I'm all for that person pursuing their American dream. Leave and go be a part of that instead, but I wish they wouldn't turn around and hate and spread that hate.
The Taiwanese are China simply because they say they are. However, in this discussion, it is not helpful to refer to the Taiwanese as 中國人 because they aren't. They are 台灣人. But the Taiwanese are 華人 as are all Chinese people. 華人 refers to ethnic Chinese. Otherwise the majority of Singaporeans are also 中國人 and not 新加坡人.
@@harisadu8998Taiwan is part of China. Singapore is not part of China. Get the difference? When you say Taiwanese, it does not exclude them as Chinese nationals because Taiwan is part of China. Just like saying Texans or Californians does not mean they are not Americans.

The Constitution of the Republic of China stipulates that the territory of the Republic of China consists of the mainland and Taiwan Island, so the decision must be made by all 1.425 billion Chinese people!!
@@REDSUN-8 I mean in an idealist scenario of course should be like that.
But Taiwan has in the practice its own government and in order to peacefully reunify is necessary that the local government of Taiwan negotiate with Mainland China.
Is the people of Taiwan who has the power to vote for the party that is willing to do that.
USA knows that very well, that is why they spent a lot of money on propaganda to convince Taiwan people to choose the parties that want to separate.
Anyway, lets see what happen.
@@AteshteshYou have to understand that the Taiwan government is just a local government!! The constitution of the Republic of China, which was expelled by the United Nations in 1971, stipulates that Taiwan is only a province. How does it have the qualifications to negotiate on an equal footing with the central government?? The constitution of the Republic of China stipulates that the territory includes the mainland and Taiwan, in this case, if Taiwan wants to be independent, it must pass a referendum of 1.4 billion people!!

I just say, one thing is what it has to be, because the logic and other is what is it in the practice because the circumstances.
In the practice to achieve the peaceful reunification is necessary that people vote for the party in the local government that negotiate that with the mainland.
The green party seems to be payed by USA government, they just will try to resist and push a war forward.
That ca be avoided with Taiwan people voting for blue party.
But even like that, an agreement is still no 100% grantee.
I hope they can reunify peacefully.

Great video! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
和苏格兰不具有可比性,毕竟苏格兰是凯尔特人,不是盎萨人,另外苏格兰历史上也一直是一个独立的国家,有自己的king
This is because Scotland and England had discussed in advance the possibility of future separation before the merger, that is, Scotland had the right to leave the United Kingdom. However, the UK would not allow Wales and Northern Ireland to become independent, and there was a protracted war.
从1949年起,台湾就已经没有了大陆的主流资讯,大多数人还是相信媒体描绘的中国
Finally, don’t pretend to have forgotten a war called the American Civil War.
it was never the matter of referendum in human history,
America wanted independence, and the overlord failed to hammer them, so it succeeded
Catalonia wanted independence, and Spain just crushed them, so it failed,
if one wants independence, he gotta fight the brutal war to get it
the truth has always been might is right
@@irone7050Even without talking about the national historical connection, the government of the Republic of China took away gold and talents belonging to the entire Chinese people when it fled to Taiwan, laying the foundation for Taiwan's subsequent development.
No wars in Asia , too many already around the world. I hope Taiwanese people are sensible enough to know what is right for them.

Good points. In Europe and other places we claim democratic principles, but in fact representative democracy has never been worse than now.

I find that most native Taiwanese want independence. Most of the post civil war Chinese mainlanders who settled on Taiwan want a unified China.
Many Taiwanese people do not want reunification because they believe that there is no democracy and no voting on the mainland. But what they don’t know is that if the mainland implements democratic voting, then if a candidate wants to unify Taiwan by force, he will receive the greatest support.

Simple explanation but well understood on the position of Taiwan as part of China. 💪
China may have been divided dozens of times in history, but it will eventually be integrated into a whole. I don't think this time is an exception.
You don’t know much about Taiwan,
Taiwan's media is also divided into two factions, those that are pro-China and those that are anti-China.
Taiwanese can read information on either side and make their own judgments.
Taiwanese people are not as "easily" misled as you think.
But now 80% of traditional media are "green", which means they are anti-China. You may find that various opinions are abundant on CZcams, but for people aged 40 to 59 who embrace traditional media, it can be found that the DPP has the highest support.
u forget the part DPP shutdown all pro china media ,this why so hard find information from pro china in taiwan
Taiwan has never been a part of the PRC. At least we can agree more provinces in China should be like Taiwan.
@@jaydee6268 The People's Republic of China is the successor to The Kingdom of China (or Imperial China or China)... and Taiwan was and still is a part of it.

China cannot allow this to happen as this would amount to huge impact on the lives of Chinese people all over the world.
it's not a dream, it's a nightmare.
Self determination only applied to a colony. Taiwan is not a colony, it is part of China.
Finally there is somebody speaks out the truth and reality about the situation! Thanks!!

Ukraine is also a model of democracy until it became a useless burden. Then it becomes into a corrupted oligarchy country.
There can be no unilateral referendum. The sovereignty of Taiwan belongs to the Chinese nation of 1.4 billion people.
Your so rare! Sadly, nowadays right things are so hard to gain people's attention. Democracy needs hatred.
