    The Great Firewall of China is not an absolute ban on Western social media. Rather, it calibrates the amount of uncontrolled toxic content that enters the country such as fake news, hate speech, bullying, etc. As you pointed out, the use of VPNs is permitted in certain situations. VPNs are not, as such, illegal.

      This has nothing to do with excessive production.
      The real excessive production in the world is US debt!
      The West discharged pollution for 200 years without environmental awareness and no restrictions.
      Wait until the West is rich, they move the high -pollution industries to other countries and accuse others of making pollution to limit the industrial development of others.
      China has been accused of making too much pollution in the past. But in recent years, MSM has become more and more difficult to hide the truth. More and more people know that China grows a large number of trees and strives to protect the environment each year, and has transformed a large number of deserts to green deserts. China outputs a large amount of cheap and good quality photoelectric boards, making solar cost cheaper.
      Therefore, the West has now changed the reasons for conviction in China. They blame China to make the air too clean, causing more sunlight to penetrate the atmosphere, causing global warming ...
      What a disgusting dual standard.

    If high-speed rail is losing money in China, that's because China regards high-speed rail as a public good, just like public hospitals and public schools and public libraries and so on.
    In fact, there are many places around the world where public transportation is FREE, so they're "losing" money, too. Examples include Chambly (Canada), Luxembourg, Tallinn (Estonia), Avesta (Sweden), Dewsbury (UK), Perth (Australia), Clemson (USA), Samokov (Bulgaria), and Mariehamn (Finland).

    Real good point about the transport subsidies. Here in the west, our government is all about cost recovery for public utilities as well as bouts of equating privatization with efficiency. Cost recovery makes sense whent the governement cannot afford certain program but basic necessities absolutely everyone could use like public transit, healthcare should be subsidize to the point that everyone can use it. Our governemnts nowadays is so inefficient and have their goals so screwed up that they cannot afford to properly suppport basic necessities. While one may argue that private companies is more efficient than public but it's worthwhile to ponder the counter argument of perhaps we do not place enough requirement on our government that they are not efficient at all.

      @@LW78321 I think you have been misled. That's the price for blindly believing in the disinformation pushed by your media and govt. The govt don't make money from the privatized public transport, power stations etc. It is the cronies of the politicians running the govt that make the money. Even worse, when they over reward themselves and the companies loss money, the same politicians dig up some reason to use tax payers money (your money) to bail out the companies. To add salt to wound, the crony executives still get their bonuses and all you, the brainwashed public get is a price rise in tickets or utility rates. However, I don't feel in the least sympathetic for you, because I am Chinese and I have enough of your senseless "hate" and smears that you happily expound because your Govt fed you crap.

    Infrastructure is called infrastructure, because it builds the foundation and everything else is built on top of that, industries, logistics, economies. That is why transportation system is state owned in China, and the price is made very affordable. The money lost in infrastructure will be compensated by the growth of industries, logistics, economies.

    The most negative aspect regarding living in China these days is the fierce competitions for personal progress 内卷。Imagine combining all of the populations of the US and European Union then double the number. Putting all these people in one country is super stressful for its citizens. That’s why a lot of successful rich people emigrate to western countries just to provide a less stressful future for their children while they travel between the countries and enjoy the best of both worlds.

    For ethnic Chinese people who are not irretrievably westernised, China IS definitely the best place to live. But for Westerners, particularly from the Anglosphere, it may not be. There's first the cultural issues. Then, there's the political stuff and baggage that some find hard to shake off. Then, there's also the personal mindset, likes and dislikes, which are not easy to change.

    Chinese government is run by engineers. Lots of professionals work there to reduce terrible policy choices (which they have, no excuse here).
    Like even Xi has a chemical-engineering degree when he is considered less wise or talented. Former premier Lee is an economist, a PhD with many serious academic papers. Former president Hu was a water conservancy engineer and actually worked in a dam construction.
    And who is Joe? A lifetime politician. Who is Trump? A lifetime celebrity. They know well about winning an election but not promoting a project.
