  • All tactical training stems from the basics, and simple maintenance like how to field strip your pistol is definitely part of the basics.
You can learn a whole lot more firearm cleaning and maintenance tips here: aliengearholsters.com/blog/ma...
Jason Beighley from Skeleton Key Tactical came up for a few days of tactical training. He covered a lot of ground, but went over a lot of the basics of operating a pistol for defensive purposes. One of the topics he covered was basic cleaning and maintenance, which starts with a field strip.
Field stripping is the minimum amount of disassembly needed to clean or work on the gun. For semi-auto pistols, typically you'll remove the slide from the frame, and remove the barrel and recoil spring from the gun.
Field stripping a pistol starts with gun safety. Make sure the pistol is totally cleared, by unloading the pistol and visually inspecting it to ensure that no ammunition is in the gun.
How you field strip a pistol depends a lot on the make and model.
Always keep the pistol pointed in a safe direction. After clearing the pistol, put the slide into battery. Engage the takedown mechanism to unblock the barrel, disengage the firing mechanism and take the slide off the frame.
Push the recoil spring forward, and pull it out of the slide.
Push the barrel up, and pull it out of the slide.
That's a field strip for most semi-auto pistols. How a gun field strips depends on the kind of gun it is. We have a Glock 17, M&P Shield and Sig Sauer P365 in this video, but your gun might be vastly different, but this is the general idea.
Another good idea is to have a cleaning mat of some sort. You can find those, as well as holsters and other concealed carry gear at:
