  • Happy Black Friday everyone, and to my subscribers south of the border, Happy Thanksgiving! Today’s video is pretty much like a ride report and possibly my last ride of the season. It has already started to get cold, and if you’re from around the Greater Toronto Area, you know what I mean.
    I think it was just a couple of weeks ago when we had our first snowfall and they had salted the roads. After that, I knew the end of the riding season was upon us.
    And I don’t like riding when there is salt on the road for a couple of reasons. The first one being that road salt makes it more dangerous to ride because it decreases tire traction. The second reason is the corrosive nature of road salt on the bike.
    Ride safe everyone!

    Hi there. Never knew that they salted the roads! That looks pretty dangerous mate. I feel sad for you guys in cold countries that you get quiet limited riding seasons.
    Btw, keep the good job on doing videos!

      Yes, it's unfortunate for bikers but I still love the variety of seasons. Thanks for your positive comment.

    I'll think about you as I ride through Xmas and New Year's and on into the spring! (Sorry!) Summer here is gnarly...when it's 118 degrees, "at speed" is a lot like standing in front of an industrial blow-dryer, especially with gear on. So, I shut it down (except for early morning rides) from about July thru September. Just 'cause you aren't riding, thought, don't stop with the vids...we have lots to learn from you...

      I live in the north end of Palm Springs, CA...right on the edge of the desert, literally. From my front door, you can see the windmill farms that line I-10 from west of the mountain pass and stretching to the east.

    For me it completely depends on the weather, I don't have a defined "stop" time. Right now I'm living in northern CA where there's no salt/sand/snow. So right now I ride year 'round as lon gas it's not dumping buckets of water out and the roads are soaked through.
    Prior to this I lived in NY, however, and there it was pretty much just when it got too cold. Typically highway riding stopped when it dropped into the ~7-10*C range (depends on distance), and for local riding maybe the 3*C range, or maybe 0*C if roads are dry & clean and it's only a short trip, not going very fast, etc. Though it also depends on road conditions, if it's 3*C and rainy I don't want to be out, don't want to be out in 10*C and rain or roads are sandy. So I would typically start garaging once the temps got too damn low & the snow hit, but if the temp was warmer for a week or so, I'd get the bike right back out.

      NY is has very similar weather to where I live. It must be nice to be in CA now where there's no road salt. Thanks for your comment and ride safe!

    Im in Northern California and as long as it's not raining, all year is fair game. Haven't had much time lately due to family and kids, but i try to get saddle time when ever i have an opportunity. Happy Holidays Brown Brady 🤙🤘

    I tend to ride all year. I'm south of the border from you. East coast. Not to far below New York. My version of winterizing my bike is more cloths. Besides the salt, people don't look for bikes in the winter. It's a bit more dangerous.
    What kind of helmet do you have? Most helmets come with that rubber baffle that clips in at the base of the visor. Really cuts down on the fogging. So does a good pin lock visor. It won't help your glasses, but it helps with the visor. There are spray on products that can help, but ask a scuba diver how they keep their masks from fogging.

    • @Brownbrady
      @Brownbrady  Před 6 lety +1

      That's a real good point about drivers forgetting about bikes in the winter. It's bad enough that bikers are almost invisible during the summer. My visor has pin lock and does not fog as much. I think I'll try the spray you speak of. Thanks for commenting and ride safe.

    glad you're back to making videos again. I've enjoyed them.
    I'm a little north of Houston, Texas.
    We can pretty much ride year round down here. I don't ride in the heat though. Nothing fun about that too me. I'm a spring/fall rider.

    Hey BB, try putting gel shaving foam on the inside of your visor. rub it on, leave for a few minutes and buff off, this will give you great fog prevention on cooler rides. or you could upgrade to a pinlock? To answer your question I ride all year, but we don't get snow here in Melbourne and they don't grit the roads, it does rain quite heavily though so that's a good chance to upskill.

    • @Brownbrady
      @Brownbrady  Před 6 lety +1

      Gel saving foam eh? I'll try that next time. Thanks, I appreciate the comments from the other side of the world. Ride safe.

    NYC- All Winter, sans snow and ice conditions; my moto is my primary way around town. More especially so with all the mass transit issues New York has been having lately. In fact our transit authority just hired Andrew Byford, the CEO of Toronto's public transit system to help fix the system. Hope he is a good one, haha... I thoroughly enjoy your videos, keep them coming. thanks.

      That's pretty intense. Sunny days in mid winter are usually very cold and windy. You're gonna love the new subway cars that do not have doors between them. It looks like one long spacious hallway.

    Hi BB!! Enjoy the off-season. I hope its a short one for you :-) Im in Texas so its safe to say that we get 10.5 to 11 months out of the year to ride. I see folks in other states putting the bikes up because its too cold. Since we really don't have that issue , I tend to ride a lot less when its hot, and it does get hell-fire hot out here. Im completely uncomfortable in full gear at 85+, but I will not ride without it. So I have a very short summer riding season. I look forward to seeing your spring vlogs. :-) Take care.

      Victor said the same about riding less in the summer, I thought it was a typo lol. See you in the next one and thanks for watching.

    I usually stop riding when temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius (forecast at noon), as chances of wet road surfaces shaded by trees (lots of those in my area), can be iced up in morning. Tires do not warm up enough, so less traction. I do not warm up enough also, so numb fingers, knees and toes.
    In summer when it is getting above 30 degrees, I do not ride as well, as wearing the full suit overheats myself, thus my concentration is significantly reduced and riding becomes unsafe. I'm much more in my element in this weather, having my feet in the pool and holding a beer in my hand...
    On average, my riding season is from mid March to mid November (location: The Netherlands) and manage to do about 5000 kms in that time, just spare time rides. But if winter comes early and roads are sprayed with salt, October will be the end of season for me.
    During December, January and February I'm not allowed to ride according to my insurance policy, which grants me a fair discount on the insurance costs. During these months I usually do maintainance on the bike, gear, tools and GPS.

      @Brownbrady  Před 6 lety

    I'm just outside Washington, DC. My bike has been covered and parked for a few weeks now. It's stupid cold here and the roads are just white with salt/brine and I've no desire to be a road crayon.

    I had mine put away a few weeks before your vid. Snow in Sask. Then I put em to storage and it all melted. I would have em out still, but I gotta do maintenance on em and dirty roads means dirty bikes. I don't feel like doing the work with a muddy bike I cannot clean til spring.
