The thing to remember about riding gear -- it will not dissipate force. If you come off the bike at speed, YOU are a force in motion. The energy within you must dissipate. The best get-off is a lowside on a clear flat surface (ala road racing) where the slide dissipates your kinetic energy via friction. For that you want gear that can take the friction of the slide coupled with armor in impact points (knees, shoulders) that both protects and dissipates the energy if those points hit.
What gear will NOT do is protect you much from high speed impact. The internal force of say your spleen going from 60 to 0 when hitting a car is not changed by your gear.
Better gear includes a chest protector to prevent "flail chest" when your ribs impact your bars or screen, and an airbag vest such as the Helite Turtle vest the will help cushion your torso while immobilizing your neck against your helmet.
And while we are on helmets, one should read just what those DOT & Snell test standards are and not just pick the cheapest 'approved' helmet. There clearly are differences in fit and quality that lead to greater cushioning for your skull. And remember that helmets are "one and done" because after he first impact, even if it's falling off the bike @ 15mph doing a wheelie in front of your house, it is not only impossible to assess the integrity of the shell structure, but the probability of the foam liner (think cooler styrofoam) having been compressed on head impact is 100% leading to less cushion the 2nd time the helmet is impacted.

    Welcome back!
Never gear down either myself. Helmet first off, regardless of legality, even just a short move. Absolutely. A guy here was moving a bike in his shop yard and accidentally fell over, hit head first and ended up in a coma.
For your discussed gear, the riding pants. I personally prefer pants I put over my geans. Usually they have ducted venting if higher quality ones. The ducting helps keep cool while riding. I like them because they often have protection in them over what just riding jeans will. When I get where I am going, just take off. Good for even dress clothes if you are using your bike as a regular mode of transport. They help keep weather off. Last one that is actually nice is they also can help keep you cool while riding. The ones I wear have heavier inside material. This keeps the engine heat off of you.
Shoes. I remember a tip I was taught. When deciding what boots for riding, pick up the boot, bend and twist it whatever way you can with both hands. Then put it on and move your foot around as much as you can. How much it moves? It will move more in a crash so if you can twist the boot like a wet towel, imagine your foot inside it in a spill.
Gloves I can comment from personal experience. It took out a good section of the hardened knuckle and palm of the glove. My hands be much softer.
Hearing protection is often recommended as well. If you ride a lot or long distance, stop by a hearing center. Pick up some custom fit ones can be a worthwhile investment as well.
Lastly, you made the comment about gear after bikes. In a way, it is actually recommended. That is because ergonomics can affect if the gear is functional. Jacket, sleeves can pull up, your cuffs of your pants, or your boots might not allow needed foot position for controls when you actually get on your bike. So is nice to have the bike handy to sit on to ensure that the gear will protect you while on your bike.
Having a wasp get into the cuff of your boot cause riding pants didn't stay tucked when sitting down... not fun....
Overall, for new riders, all of what you mentioned in your core stuff has become law for new riders in saskatchewan. First couple years of riding, you MUST wear gloves, full arm and leg coverings and full toe high cuff boots and minimum 3/4 helmet. Took a fight to finally get that law. By time their graduation period is up, most riders are uncomfortable gearing down.

I agree with your list I had my helmet five months and my riding jacket four months before I got my bike. I was so excited 😁. I used an old pair of boots until I two weeks after I got the bike when I added boots with really good protection. I added motorcyling pants a week after that and CE-rated shoulder, back, elbow, hip and knee protection two weeks later. All ecential for me when I ride. Keep up the good videos!

A guy at work has been out for 3 months now after his bike wreck. Novelty non-DOT illegal helmet, no other gear at all, and drunk. He totaled his bike, a 1983 Honda Silverwing GL650 Interstate (last year for the Silverwing and only year for the 650 in the US), that I tried to buy from him for 3X what he paid for it. I bet it's for sale now! I saw pics of him and they aren't pretty. Have some sense out there people. It only takes a split second to do something you will regret for the rest of your life. Skipping just basic riding gear can bring the end that much faster. Great video, as are the others I have watched!

Welcome Back :-) Great timing on this video because just today I decided to go for a short ride in the neighborhood and was tempted to only wear my helmet and gloves. I was so bothered by actually being on the bike without it, that I never made it out of the driveway. I went back and got my jacket and boots. LOL The only thing I would add to your list is steel toe boots/shoes. Im in Texas and that was a requirement to take the safety course. The pair I have look just like hi top tennis shoes. They are of course heavier than regular shoes, but I feel a lot safer wearing them. Stay safe.

Just a word I heard, don't feel invincible even with my gear, Bohn full leanth under my riding pants (Kevlar) plus CE Jacket, elbow, shoulder, back, then I even wear my over pants, full face helmet, MX boots as I ride an adventure bike...plus added Ridged Industry's LED lights, GO pro saved my (who was at fault as w/ out I wouldn't even have his plate He left me there to bleed to death. ) The video has his insurance not putting up any fault fight only a damage (me) they paid for my bike and all gear (two weeks old) w receipts. But being a rider when I was 18 back in 1980 I lost my leg, and yes I still ride, not as good adventure rider as I could/ would have been ... Then the 1,000,000 dollar settlement was legally embezzled by a friend my father trusted as he didn't trust the banks funny ... Not really so money I was sopposed to be able to live on as the Dow Jones was like 872 ...and way... Live to ride ride to live, I have over 250,000 miles plus on bikes in the last 37 years, ...WEAR YOUR GEAR, WATCH MCRIDER.COM safety instruction, free and Kevin, is a professional M/C safety instructor. Then one more thing... Pratice Pratice an 1 hour on Sunday AM in some large parking lot so your responses are reflex not thought of. Ok I'm off my box, I just love love RIDING ! always have always will even after 4 years of countless surgeries and hospital and money legally ripped off... My dad was doing what he thought was best, so I only hold the "Friend" of his that managed to lie to him, and being I was so young it had to be better to let a business man Handel it then an wounded 18 year old.

You ought to do a vid on helmets, selection an sizing. Put people at ease about the bobble head effect. I'm a little guy with a big head so I'm a major bobble and a lot of new riders shy away from a quality helmet out of embarrassment. Great vid.

BrownBrady, ear plugs for sure on highways. Hey we have the same HJC, however mine is black with small hot pink splashes. Honestly I always carry super glue in my pocket when I ride (and hike) seals skin up fast if I need.
Where do you get the video footage of crashes, omg these make me cringe.
I just stumbled onto your channel and enjoy your style. 1st I saw the Qs drivers are afraid to ask riders. *♡* that vid. Coz we 'dont care what you think' of our gear hehe🙀.
I really like your voice and your calm demeanor.
The vid that got me to say wow, is the introvert vid you did. *Loved* that one, it's what got me to subscribe. And yes, this is all from today. Discovered you, binge watched and subscribed. Did you share what courses you're taking, did I miss that?📚

I have a full 2 peice red suit , I wear it often, looking dorky? I don't feel like it. Sometimes I feels like it's overkill on a street looking like a racer. But it's for protection.my other one is just an armor jacket, where all the plastic armor showing, connect by fish net material. I forgot where I put my leg pads. I'm trying to buy Movistar Yamaha racing suit too because I have R1, full protection, but looking dorky lol?

Hi would like to get into riding new interest at 40+ years of age. My bike interest is on the sports specifically the FZ 09 2017 but living in Ontario is crazy for insurance for a new rider $2350.00 I might have to compromise for a FZ R3 for smaller displacement, but may get board of the bike. Not sure how long it takes for insurance to go do.. Any suggestions would be great.

    • @Brownbrady
      @Brownbrady  Před 6 lety

Hi Timothy, like you, I started riding after 40 but I chose the Honda CBR 125R. I cannot comment on the FZ 09 2017 because I have never ridden anything other than the 2 bikes I have in this channel. As far as getting bored, there are other ways to make riding more exciting besides a larger displacement: try different styles, tracking, or dirt biking. Hopefully, others with experience in these bikes you speak of will chime in. Ride safe!

I agree, there is some really stupid riders. I just have to look at my insurance statement and I am reminded. Motorcycles are really REALLY dangerous.
