    I’m a huge vintage head. Noticed a lot of friends are actually into modern, alt arts, SAR’s and full arts etc. I love that I get easy access to vintage because of this. I’d like to continue to get 1st edition cards and take them home to my binders and the super pristine ones “may” get graded… or not. Either way, I’m just happy that I’ll be able to focus on neo sets without interruption.

    I think you've let the hype cloud your vision. Nobody will genuinely care about a card which has thousands of gem mint copies. Irrational markets can last a decade, just because people have "cared" about this stuff for a couple of years, be careful, historically these things have found a way to bite "investors" on the arse.

    • @orionsires
      @orionsires  Před měsícem

      That’s a great point I mean obviously I’m still buying vintage regardless but I do feel modern is just more relatable and affordable so many new collectors are *probably* pouring their money into the newest latest and greatest. It’s going to be cool to stick around and find out. Danny you know I’ve been skeptical of modern for some time now so there’s always a chance things fall apart but the franchise seems very strong right now. I think people overall feel less risky buying into modern is all I’m saying. I call it how I see it man! Hopefully vintage prevails 😂😎🙏🏼

    Vintage will boom again once the 90's babies get into their years with more disposable income, I expect a big leap around retirement their retirement years. It appears to become a common life cycle type of thing to collect nostalgic stuff from the era you grew up in.
    A lot of 90's babies are transitioning into the baby & wedding phases of life, a little less money, but earning more than they previously had in their 20's.

    Thanks for the vid. I'm collecting modern instead of vintage. However, my main rule is that I only collect cards that go into decks. My favorite part of the hobby is deck building and creating a pool of expanded decks that are fun and balanced against each other.
    So I'll be collecting mostly less common things like standard staples, foiling out the decks with reverse holofoils, and very specific special illustration and full art cards (ex. SI Tinkaton ex, SI Chien-Pao, FA Meowscarada)

    I have a bit of a more bullish view on vintage. I am into sports cards, especially vintage (mostly baseball). Vintage baseball has held value and continued to grow steadilly for years and years. Sure nostaligia plays a part, but another factor in their worth is that these cards have historic significance. I think early cards of iconic pokemon will do well because of this. People will want them for the significance of the card, not nessiaarilly the nostaligic factor. For examples, I was born in the 90s but love 50s and 60s baseball cards. I have no nostalgic connection to them, but tresasure them the same just because of how historically significant & unique they are. Youd be suprised, but many of these cards have higher pop reports than pokemon cards, but hold a premium still. Vintage baseball may not be flashy like new cards, but knowing they are going on 75 years old is pretty cool. I believe has pokemon continues to entrench itself as a pop culture icon (like disney and star wars) early cards will become more and more valued just solely for the fact of their historic significance

    • @orionsires
      @orionsires  Před měsícem +2

      Hey I hope the same thing occurring in sports cards happens with pokemon. I just purchased my most expensive card recently a 1st edition charizard psa 9 but there’s a part of me that worries that vintage will be dead because the new money and new collectors are going after modern more than anything. It will be cool to see what happens for the hobby entirely over the next decade great comment and thanks for watching 😎🙏🏼

    I mostly collect English cards in binders, though I have a few graded ones. I’m curious about your thought process behind grading. Your crystal Nidoking was graded a 9, and you cracked it open, made a video about the frustrations, and resubmitted it. It came back as an 8, even though it was a 9. Now, you're considering buying a 10. I’m just happy to have the cards I own, but I wish you had shared more about why you choose to submit to grading companies despite the risks.
    I just like to add the cards I own that are graded are Japanese ones, never in English. I have cards like Red's Pikachu, the trio Kanto trainers and starters, the CoroCoro Mew, and the CD promos. I like consistency, so I aim for grade 9 for vintage and grade 10 for ultra-modern ones. This is why I collect just a few graded cards. I do chase the grade for Japanese because how good the qc are 😁

    • @orionsires
      @orionsires  Před měsícem +2

      I think grading is risky but I really wanted to clean and resub my Nidoking because it had dirt on it but yeah horrible experience and wouldn’t try that again. I will probably resub it again and crack it again and send it in through bulk to try one more time for a 9 but I always wanted a 10 for the crystal Nidoking it’s honestly one of my favorite vintage cards. It also goes to show that we all make mistakes even long time collectors make mistakes. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

    I was thinking about this topic the other day. I think you can kind of relate vintage pokemon market to older vintage cars. Rare and really popular vintage cars continue to rise while run of the mill cars that are not as popular are taking a hit. Similar to cards. Rare high dollar cards will always have a premium. Not as popular or cool to most cards will be harder to sell in the future. People like the latest and greatest, older men and women who love their old cars usually has something new and modern in their garage as well.

    I like both and it's now far enough along that we probably need more terms than just vintage and modern. Ultra modern should change every few years to the newest, most hyped sets, and more mid era or transitional between the two is being seen as more "vintage." WOTC is its own designation, but I consider early Nintendo era and ex vintage as well. SO, I like both, and it's all about price points for me. While I value my low pop vintage cards the most of anything I own, at a certain price point I'd sell higher grades and happily keep a lower grade copy of the same art, whereas certain modern cards I own I also value highly as they are not worth selling below a certain price point. But for anything "modern" I have to have PSA 10 if not a binder copy since why not, they are so plentiful right now and grading or buying 10s is usually not cost prohibitive like high grade vintage is. SO MUCH to enjoy, part of what makes collecting so fun, and the more time passes the more standards change which makes staying engaged and researching very satisfying.

    • @orionsires
      @orionsires  Před měsícem +1

      Nicely put Karma! Loved reading your take and agree there needs to be more specific terminology than lumping it all into two categories but it feels like most stuff in between does get somewhat forgotten. It’s hard to keep up with it all that’s for sure no matter what price points. But I appreciate both I just can’t believe the kind of hype going into “ultra modern” right now. I thought for sure scarlet violet sets will be sitting dead in the water and I was wrong they are moving along just fine.. I thought super vintage 1999-2007 was definitely superior but times change.. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @karmacutioner1
      @karmacutioner1 Před měsícem

      @@orionsires Ditto. Pokemon is still pretty new, vintage Poke boomers are still young, and in every other established hobby I can think of with very few exceptions, the original early stuff is prized, less volatile and steadily rises in perception as the most desirable. I have zero nostalgia for anything pre-1970s, but there are LOTS of things I would love to own and can't afford that are much older than that. This is the long game, hardly anyone cared pre-2016 about Pokemon which was only 8 years ago, it would take literally time itself to convince me low pop early vintage and trophy cards will not continue rising and leading the hobby as the most desirable cards to own. Everything rests on its shoulders, all those great trailblazing artists will only rise in collective esteem and I think that will contribute to desirability as well. As long as collectors love and respect Pokemon as a franchise, it's hard to imagine things settling out eventually any other way. I appreciate you, your vintage quest is spectacular.
