Fun fact: the reason the homebrew Donkey Kong for Atari 2600 is so good compared to the real one is because Coleco (who owned the rights to home releases of Donkey Kong at the time) intentionally made the Atari and Intellivision ports worse to make the Colecovision seem like a better console in comparison.
Yeah, it didn't work though, Colovision hardly lasted 3 years in the market LOL

I am pretty sure that we shouldn't compare the official one to the homebrew, since I think the official games don't look that good because people were not given that much free time to implement all sorts of flickering trickery, I believe the homebrew utilizes more ram, too. However, the story is still valid and the game could have looked better.
It did look better on the console however this homebrew looks even better. I wonder how good a homebrew of coleco would look like

I know the official Atari 2600 Version was made worse on purpose by a rival company, but this version looks better than most of the console's entire library. It looks like a hybrid between the visuals of the Atari 2600 and the aesthetics of the NES version at times.
I really love the atari 2600 remake for a good reason. It proves the system wasn't as primitive as people thought. This donkey kong remake takes the system and flips it on it's head. To be honest, this is mile sbetter than the original which was rushed to completion and deceived by coleco

This goes to show how Coleco screwed up badly the 2600 port in purpose.
That's not true at all. They were working with 4k. The port is actually quite good when you take that into consideration.

Donkey Kong ports have been an interest of mine ever since they started. I’ve played quite a bit of each hombrew presented in the video and many ports since the beginning.
I had the Texas Instruments Home Computer version which I was very happy to see was far superior to the 2600 version most people had at the time. My next door neighbors just got a Colecovision and that was an impressive version at the time. Had a few friends with Atari 8-bit computers which is a port I was impressed with. One of my neighbors had a C64 which is an interesting port.
Unless you had a Colecovision you wanted the AtariSoft made ports instead. The mid 80’s gave us the Ocean ports which were much more like the arcade and gave the Famicom and 7800 versions a run for their money on the visuals.
These homebrews are all interesting. The Windows version I had problems with the controls. I was impressed with the visuals when I first played it but it wore out quickly. The SNES reminded me of the Windows version but the controls were much user friendly. The 8-bit Atari version is special because I remember the original port so well and to see it get a makeover was long overdue. The C64 homebrew runs great, I really like the order of the levels like the arcade and the intro and that they included everything I love about the arcade version. The color palette is too limited however. I would hope this could get fixed or updated. The Atari 2600 homebrew surprised me the most. The multi-screen and large 2600 sprites but being able to pull off the arcade look.
It’s probably mostly young people who like the Windows and SNES versions. I have to go with the older systems that push the limits. Having watched the evolution of gaming from the late 70’s to today I can understand and appreciate how well a port is within it’s limitations. The newer ports on newer hardware just don’t cut it for me. I would have rather preferred the SNES Donkey Kong to use the DK Country sprites over what is very dated for a system with 16-bit hardware. I would have even preferred a perfect port of the original arcade and bonus levels welcome.
The homebrew community has done some amazing stuff. I look forward often to what is next and what has come out that I have added to my collection.

On Commodore 64 version( the last one in the video), I’ve seen people play it and when you knock out all the rivets on the right side after the left side, commodore did not programme it to be on the right side as well so the heart goes behind Pauline looking right to thank Mario

I like how much it’s like the arcade but lacks a good color palette. Donkey Kong Jr. did much better. I wish they would update it. But it is very well done. I’m most impressed by the 2600 port but I have to agree the c64 port plays better and runs really smoothly. I play it on my home built arcade and the sticks and buttons work phenomenal for this port.

The C64 Version actually is a fusion of The Atari soft version of donkey Kong for the C64 Atari soft and the C64 ocean version
