My guess as to how you're _supposed_ to interpret the scene is that Donkey Kong's roar scared Pauline into running farther up the tower rather than back down into Mario's arms-thus, both follow her up the tower in turn until they run out of tower to climb.

Because they were mostly business tools, therefore built and shipped with that purpose in mind, their graphics capabilities were not a priority. I think the only graphics card available in 81 was the CGA which was pretty ugly unless the artist knew how to trick it out.

    My thoughts on the versions
Arcade: What more could I say? It's the Arcade version
ColecoVision: Being the first port of Donkey Kong (I think), doesn't look all that bad. The jump sound effect sounds weird but nonetheless, it's pretty good
Coleco Tabletop: Something you would see on one of those Tiger handheld games.
Atari 2600: Extremely primative graphics, but one of the more "iconic" games of the 2600.
Intellivision: Everything is colored wrong. Especially Donkey Kong. Who is green now?
NES: Being a port actually developed by Nintendo, it's really good.
DOS: I don't know what Atari was smoking when they developed this PC port. Colors are awful, Donkey Kong looks creepy, and the jump mechanics don't seem right.
Commodore 64 (Atari): Looks more closer to the Arcade but runs too slow, and it looks squished.
Commodore 64 (Ocean): Very great port. Looks pretty good. Better than the Atari version
Atari 8-bit Family: Looks pretty good, but runs too fast.
Texas Instruments: Looks like the Arcade version a little bit, but Jumpman has the wrong color pallet, it looks washed out, Donkey Kong doesn't throw the barrels, instead they just appear, and some strange music for when you complete the level.
VIC-20: Runs WAY too fast, looks very pixelated, and I just love how Jumpman doesn't climb the ladders. Instead, he walks up them.
Apple II: Same issues apply from the DOS version with this version. But it looks and sounds much worse.
Coleco Adam: It's the ColecoVision port with a few changes.
Amstrad CPC: It's the Ocean Commodore 64 version, but on the Amstrad.
ZX Spectrum: This honestly looks like a version satan would make. And why does Jumpman climb so damn slow up the ladders??
MSX: It's the ZX Spectrum version, but looks much better.
Famicom Disk System: It's just the NES version but on a floppy disk.
Atari 7800: Based off the NES version, graphic wise, doesn't look bad. But sound on the other hand sounds like a field of wet farts.
Nintendo E-Reader: It's the NES version but squished.
Game Boy Advance: It's the NES version but on GBA
Wii/3DS: It's the NES version but remastered

Three distinct versions of the arcade original exist: old Japanese, new Japanese, and North American. The Japanese versions have you play all four stages in every rotation, whereas the North American version starts with only the barrel and rivet stages then adds the elevator and cement stages with the second and third rotations respectively. The version found in _Donkey Kong 64_ is based on one of the Japanese versions.
The old Japanese version lets you prevent barrels from falling down a ladder Mario is on by placing his hand right on the edge of the platform above, thus allowing you to wait for a gap. Such is also possible in the NES/Famicom port of the game and, by extension, the GBA port.

The very first version of Donkey Kong I ever played was the Atarisoft C64 version. My brother showed it to me when I was a kid. I have not seen that version of the game in over 25 years, but I distinctly remember that walk-cycle sound.

Most UK arcade cabinet's ran the 1981 Crazy Kong version of the game - near identical graphics, but very different sound effects and little in game music - that's the version I have a ROM of too.
