    Very nice installment. Many people have never seen red seal $2 bill and you explained the reason they stopped printing them and why they started again very thoroughly. Very informative for the many people out there who still think $2 bills are rare. Good installment. My personal opinion is that they will never be popular with most people ($2 bill nuts like me excluded) until they just stop making $1's. But with this pandemic I haven't spent cash since early March anyway!!

    Another great video! 1976 was a banner year for me. A new $2 bill and Bicentennial coins! I remember going to the bank asking for these starting in January that year and so disappointed that it took a while for them to show up. But when they did I was happy. Lots of fun.

      You waited until April 13 to get the $2 bills. I don't know when the quarters were released. People still think 1976 $2 bills are valuable, but there are more of those than any. I think they're still cool though. Rather have one of those than any other year. Thanks for the comment!

    They need to discontinue the one dollar bill in favor of the one dollar coin and print more two dollar bills.

      Noooo!!!, because would mean the currency has devalue, and you must to take account that the 1 dollar bill have a lot secrets than the others don't have, the 2 dollars bill also has secrets, but also is the lucky bill.

    • @GodsLittleITGirl
      @GodsLittleITGirl Před rokem +1

      @@playgt326the currency already has devalued. Also, I am not saying that we should just adopt every other countries programs, but when I was in Japan the smallest bill was essentially a $10 bill or ¥1000 yen. Everything else was coins and we survived just fine. I think one of the problems in the United States besides the used of cards over cash is that here change is almost considered worthless.

    This always makes me wonder a few questions. Had the U.S. went through with one of it's two proposals in the 1860's where a law called for issuance of a $3 bill, would the $3 bill have lasted in circulation as long as the $2 bill did, before it was discontinued? Would the $3 bill have been discontinued "before" the $2 bill was discontinued? (I'd bet anything that the $3 would've been discontinued, considerably sooner than the $2 if they would've printed $3's and I'd also wager it would be harder to bring back the $3 than it was, the $2) And if so, would they have eventually began printing $3 bills again, possibly with a new design, as well? And as crazy as it may sound, if we were still using physical cash in 2076, and the $3 bill were discontinued, even over a hundred years before, would they have brought the $3 back for the "Tricentennial" of the country?

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  Před 3 lety +3

      All good questions, but I think the $3 bill would have been doomed from the start. Even if they made one, it would not have lasted long. As it was, a $3 bill was in the works in 1863 but they never ended up making it. Regardless of where inflation left us or what the price systems were bck then (and even now), I don't think people would have been happy sorting through their $1s, $2s and $3s to find the right combination. It's just too much. Hand them a $5 and get your change, period. The $3 would have been DOA.

    • @thomasj.cikalo8497
      @thomasj.cikalo8497 Před 3 lety

      @@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary While I lean toward your way on the $3 bill being a doomed thing almost right away, there were successful $3 coins and 3-cent coins, which, although they were not very popular, they lasted a few years, and their main purpose was to buy 3-cent postage stamps individually, and sheets of 3-cent stamps with the $3 coin, so maybe the $3 bill would've stood a fair chance for a while, as long as 3-cent postage stamps were popular, and I'm surprised they still didn't go through with $3 bills for collector purposes, as a money maker. But one thing I'll never understand is the $2.50 gold Quarter Eagle, when it would've made much more sense to simply do a $2 Fifth Eagle, rather than messing around with a denomination with both full, and fractional currency combined in one denomination. I have had people tell me that it would be nice to have a $250 bill, when I argue for larger denominations than the $100 bill, and I always say "No! No $250 bills. That's too odd. I'd rather have a $200 and a $500 bill, and even, a $1,000 bill, and actually, I am currently looking at houses, and I'd like to buy one some day, and I just looked at one online that the seller wants cash for, and it's $49.900, so I really believe we should reissue all large denominations, including the $5,000 and $10,000 bills and also add a $2,000 bill, as I'd rather pay for a $50,000 house in cash with five $10,000 bills than fifty $,1,000 bills, or worse, five hundred $100 bills.
      Back on the $3 denomination, the $3 coin wasn't very popular, nor were the two forms of the 3-cent coins, the 3-cent nickel and the silver 3-cent trime. This is why I think that, maybe they thought at first "Okay, the American public are used to a $1, $2.50 and $3 coin, so let's replace them with $1, and $2 bills instead of $2.50 bills to make it easier, and also a $3 bill, since people are somewhat used to a $3 denomination coin" Then maybe they thought "Well, the $3 coin wasn't very popular, so let's just drop the $3 denomination altogether, and just issue $1 and $2 bills instead" But anyway, there were actually TWO times in the 1860's as I said, where laws called for a $3 bill, but neither law saw fruition. A shame really. I'd have loved to go around spending some $3 bills around with my $2 bills and halves. I used to hate halves and the idea of $3 bills and loved $1 coins a lot. Now I hate $1 coins, and love halves, and would love to see the plans for the $3 bill resurrected.

    Actually, the series 1963 is not the final red seal two dollar bill printed and circulated. Series 1963A was introduced when Henry Fowler became Secretary to the Treasurer, so the final red seal notes bear his signature. The series letter is an important indicator of when the notes are changed. Big changes are reflected in a new series year, but smaller changes such as merely the change of either Treasurer or Secretary to the Treasurer, small refinements to the fine print on the bill, or changes in the printing as might not be reflected by any design difference at all. The series letter was introduced with the small size currency in all denominations and types of currency, though since the arrival of series 1977 no note has born a series letter other than A. For 2003 the $2 appears as both 2003 and 2003A, but that is the only time the Federal Reserve Note $2 has ever had a series letter. The original 1928 red seal went through many such revisions, from 1928, 1928A, 2928B, and clear to 1928G when the signatures went to those of Clarke and Snyder.

      Thanks for the info. For purposes of this video, I went with the base year and thought it best not to get into the variations you describe. There's another video on this channel that covers series years in more detail, and mentions how bills can retain the year but have the added A letter or necessitate new printings when there are new signatures needed. This video would have three times as long and probably killed off an audience if I got into the details you mention. But they are appreciated, and those that read your comment will learn what you and I already know. Thanks.

      There were bills of all kinds of wacky denominations, including fractions of cents, before the Civil War. Local banks could make their own currency, in whatever denomination and design they wanted. These are now called broken bak notes, or obsolete notes. When a federally-instituted currency was first issued in 1862, they chose $1s and $2s, among other denominations, as part of the portfolio. A $3 bill was considered but never made. Other videos on my channel go into this more deeply, and you can always watch the full film. You'll get your answer within the first twenty five minutes. czcams.com/video/4b3TczZpC_Y/video.html
