What a $2 bill could buy 50 years ago - in 1972

- Maybe $2 bills aren't used as much anymore because they can't buy you much! The director of The Two Dollar Bill Documentary takes you on a brief tour of our economy circa 1972; what could a $2 bill buy you then, and how much has inflation lessened the value of a 2 dollar bill?

glad to see you still making content. I quit my job as a cashier so I dont come across these anymore!
Not making as much content as I'd like, but I haven't quit! More is coming.
I made a discovery today. Bought some twos from a local bank to find some missing Federal Reserve Notes for my collection, and discovered that the BEP is now printing 2017A San Francisco $2s. I didn't think anything about it at first, but didn't realize that they were just released in April 2022 until after consulting my Paper Money of the United States book and noticing that as of that printing, they didn't produce Atlanta or San Francisco 2s.
I was unaware of that! Thanks for sharing. $2 bills are not rare, but some printings, like the one you just found a bill from, don't produce many units. So a 2017A from San Fran may have a bit more value for some collectors because there aren't many out there.
I just paid for stuff at a hardware store with $2 bills. Staff used one of those pens to test for counterfeit bills when I paid. Just wanted to share.
Me too; I’m in Texas.. Some get a manager and they swap the $2 for two $1’s she asked me if I got more and my wallet was stuffed with $30.00 and she bought them all! I had $200 in emergency all 2013 vintage.
@@lawnmowermanTX nice!
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! Happen to come across your videos and now binge watching! Thank you for your time and the WONDERFUL content! Stay safe and Peace from Kansas!
$2 becoming worth less than today's penny in a few decades gives me quite an anxiety.
I wish I could get a 2$ bill but I don't live in the US and exchange places don't have them 😔
Another interesting $2 film. Very sad how inflation has sapped the value of all money. But I have one thing to point out - the Series of 1963 was not the last $2 bill. The series of 1963-A issued from 1965-1966 was actually the last. Keep up the interesting $2 bill videos - I enjoy them as I'm sure many other do.
Yes, you're absolutely correct. But to keep things simple, I merely meant that 1963 was the last "year" on a bill before it was discontinued. This was not the video to elaborate on those details! As always, thanks for watching!
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Fair enough. Keep up the series. I forget did you ever do a piece on $2 coins? I seem to think you did but I can't find it on you tube. Even though the US never issued a $2 coin they did issue $2.50 Gold Pieces. That might be an interesting adjunct to your $2 bill series. Just a quick suggestion.
I did a piece comparing the $2 bill to fifty-cent pieces, but not any other coin. I will look into the $2.50 gold piece. Thanks!
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary is 2050 a can of coke will cost $10, not exaggerating at all, its too true
about time for a new video!!
Agreed! I just posted in the Community section seeking some fresh ideas. I need to jump start the channel again after being busy with a new job and other projects.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary I sure would love to have one of you 2.00 dollar bills!
When are you gonna upload more vids?
I hope your reading this John. Has there been in recent years efforts to redesign the bill? Also can you make a short video answering it thanks if you read this-
Edward
I did read this. No effort to redesign the bill - the other bills were redesigned (except the $1 and $2) to add anti-counterfeiting markings. Since nobody really counterfeits small-denomination bills, the $1 and $2 have stayed the same, and will continue to stay the same. It's not really enough to do a full video out of because it's a simple concept and answer. But maybe I can work it into another video where I show the markings on other bills.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Thanks for reading love your channel
And imagine what the inflation prices will be in 50 more years...I won't be around to see it
If I am, I'll make a video comparing prices to 100 years earlier. :)
I only collect red seals even tho they arent worth big value
People saying that a 2 dollar bill is rare is like the people that say "you didnt have a childhood" it's impossible
I like to use two dollar bills, but my back hardly ever has them..
Typos are fun, aren't they? My back doesn't have any either.
Did you know back in the early 90's...stripper bars only gave your change back in $2 bills ?
(A friend told me) 🤣
Maybe your friend saw this video of ours? czcams.com/video/ICY4HV80FFY/video.html
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary yeah I know I seen this one
When the two-dollar bill was first created did it really have a curse
You should buy 8 snicker bars.
If I could go back in time to 1972, I could. But today? I might get two Snickers... if only they're on sale at Walgreens or CVS.
I have 2 possible questions
1: Is a 2 dollar bill more likely to be stolen than any other bill?
2: Has there ever been a case or a foreign currency exchange not taking a 2 dollar bill because they thought it was counterfeit?
My answers...
1. Probably not. Thieves want more than $2 for their efforts. That said, here are some guys who got busted for stealing twos: czcams.com/video/mD4l1bBvbLU/video.html
2. These kinds of events don't make news, so I can't say for sure. I will say this: it's probably more likely that it happened than that it didn't happen.
Would be cool if the feds brought back the red stamped 2s
Do two dollar bills los value when they’re torn up and bent?
They're always worth $2. But if you had a unique one, either with a fancy serial number or perhaps an older bill pre-1976, then yes, a worse condition detracts from its value.
I want a $2 bill Please
Did you know there is a radio announcer from North Carolina that goes by "two-dollar Bill" on the air ?
... trying hard to win my $2,gas ain't cheap ! Lol 😅
What are the call letters of the station in NC? I'd like to look that up.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary I wish I could remember,it was back in the 90's. ( Keep up the great work, interesting content).
Have you ever heard a $2 bill was bad luck, unless the corners were torn off ? My papaw practiced this. 👍
Here's my video on this topic, from a few years ago: czcams.com/video/lUXhwYvvXK8/video.html

Why was Thomas Jefferson on the $2 bill
All you have to do is search the channel's videos! czcams.com/video/w4XQTMToMKc/video.html
Can a grocery store accept a blue or red seal $2 bill
They can, and they probably would be smart to. Those bills are worth more than $2 so they would be coming out way ahead.
What about 100 years ago?
Half as much
Can i get one of these? I am from india and i want it.
I don't give them away, sorry. If you submit a question and I use it to make a new video, you've earned one.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary can't you understand that i am from India and how can i relate to a usa 2 dollor bill because i have never used 2 dollor bill!
@@dakshajadeja9482 Your next best bet might be a currency exchange at an airport. I would expect they're not extremely likely to have 2s or 50s, but it's worth a shot.
