- Many people think there's a black man named John Hanson on the back of the 2 dollar bill, but... (spoiler alert), there's not. Learn who the man really is and how his face ended up resembling a black man in this informational video from the director of The Two Dollar Bill Documentary. You'll also learn about intaglio printing and a bit about $2 bills are made at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Fort Worth, TX.
Doubt these facts? Here's some reading you can do...

I'VE BEEN TELLING PEOPLE THIS FOR YEARS ... THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO SIR .
I've been saying the same thing
@@user-vr1vj4xo1vI was taught this in elementary school, in the 60s.
I lived in Maryland.
I think it's interesting that he is not in any other rendering of the signing.....Isn't strangely convenient.....
Hmmmm....what are the odds that this fact has so many interesting cooincidence....sounds strangely familiar with many other so called his-story facts.....
Thanks for the history lesson! Great video!
Glad you learned something. Thanks for watching!
A Very Well Presented Clarification. Thank You! 👏
Thank you. Most people leave comments criticizing me and insisting that their opinion is fact. It's nice to see someone respect the research and presentation. Much appreciated.
Great information. Thanks John
Thanks Riley!
I have often thought he was a person of color on occasional glances, but even after looking at his hands, I knew it was not accurate. I have looked him up before, but can never remember who he is. Thankfully, this video now exists.
Appreciate it. Yes, I got tired of refuting people's claims in comments! I now have a video to post anywhere where someone insists that Robert Morris is a black man.
He is black
You have to laugh at internet people that just can't comprehend facts. I guess they would argue that he is a black man with white hands...
Don't forget Abe Lincoln had a black father
Yup... that video is in the works.
Hello I have question I want to get e two dollar bills but do you have to have a bank account to get the two dollar bills from the bank. Btw I really love the vids👍
Most banks require you to have an account to make a transaction where you trade in large bills for $2s. But some may be willing to do such a simple transaction. It depends on the bank. If you can't get them at the bank, you may be stuck ordering them from eBay, where you'll pay more than $2 per. Glad you enjoy the videos - thanks for being a subscriber!
Hello John! It's always a pleasure watching your videos, thanks for bringing joy to the world 🌎
Thank you for the nice words. Just trying to entertain / educate. :)
Thank you for your video and explanation. I grew up in Yardley PA and my folks had a business and property in Morrisville, PA, named after Robert Morris, who had a summer home there. Ironic that someone thinks he is a black man, when in fact, although Robert Morris lent the country a great deal of money to finance the revolution, some of it was made by running slave ships. History is full of irony. Thanks again.
Janet Z.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Question?? Can you prove and have evidence of how many slaves were on these slave ships and how many slave ships and where were they coming from? And what port were they docking at. Since there’s so much evidence to history or documentation, I would like to know if this can be proved.

I have a question you said that there's discrepancy in the printing concerning this one individual you said that he is white however why is everybody else in the picture clearly White please answer this for me
For the same reason that some people have dark jackets while others are light. This image was hand-crafted onto the printing plate for the $2 bill.. The printing process involves ink seeping into the engraving and then being pressed hard onto the paper. If any face, jacket, image, wall, desk or other item in the engraving was a little deeper than it should have been, more ink fills that spot, and the outcome in the print is darker. It's all one color as you can clearly see - it's just how dark the color came out. On this person's face, the engraving turned out to be a little deeper, and thus, it was darker, period. Anyone who wants to dispute it needs only to go to the actual painting to see that this gentleman is white. That's the only proof anyone needs despite all the controversy otherwise.
The amount of people arguing with this guy in the comments section is crazy. Most of the facts presented in this video are backed by primary sources and are very true. I'm not trying to disprove people who say that he is a black man, but there is no solid proof stating that the man is black, and in a historical context it doesn't make much sense.
Thank you! What a relief to have someone trust facts & research. Your comment is very much appreciated.
Please excuse me this does not come from a place of anger. However, it does come from a place of disbelief. How can any American person believe in the government when they have been lying to us, and their deceitfulness has been evident from day one of this collaboration of creating a united colony, and then the United States. Right now we are hearing new information about the lies where extraterrestrials are concerned. There is corruption in every woven thread of American history. Sorry to say. Please look into the reconstruction period of this nation, and what President Hoover did to the educational system as well as the. United daughters of the Confederacy, that’s just one part of where the evil lies.
I would like for you to give more information on John Hanson, please? I remember reading in my studies how well he was considered as a politician in the organization or organizing of the founding activities. In history, Mr Hanson was in the midst of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, even before the composition al statement or better, the drafting. As I read of him he was not in the midst as a slave but one considered to be brilliant and wise in the thoughts and offers given to those who would become founders. He was asked to be the first leader, as I read and believe lead the gatering and more than help pull together a country that was in a dismantled state to brought focus and right direction to a country that was having to bring disruption and chaos to order. Because of Mr Hanson's obvious ability, he was asked to lead the country back to order. He refused because he WAS a black man, mot a slave and thought that it would further bring division; thus, he declined and worked behind the scenes. Politically with his political skills, moved within helping to pull order and focus together. Obviously, a great man. Someone earnestly wanted to know if it were he. It would not follow through with wisdom that he showed; he would not have agreed to be photographed to further cause division. Would it have been possible for such a man to be in the midst? Yes, it was and he was. I still feel the sting of your somewhat distane for the question of the presence of a black man. Excuse me. Now I think that I shall make Mr Hanson my next project. Too many of our great men and women in this country have been minimized, hidden in the importance and greatness of the contributions to this country. Does history readily tell you? Did it? You know the answer. Books and classrooms were void of the greatness in a people who were demeaned in every way, victims of all kind of cruelty(ies) but came out better? Please don't try to say or think that (as the attempt manifesting in Florida) we were better off having learned skill from enslavement?, oh my no. Skills were there in Washington in the architecture of the Whitehouse, the layout and design of the buildings and streets. How beautiful it is and was. Other great thoughts and deeds in the mind or came from the mind of many great black men and women. The fight for rights of women in the colonies were stirred by black women as the woman we call, Moses who spoke at rallies for white women who themselves were fighting for their own freedom. Our Moses, Ms Harriet Tubman, showed our want to see everyone free. She was a great example to this country. no matter the color, after all, it is supposed to be about individual FREEDOM and LOVE for humanity, heart to heart.. With God in the midst of us change can happen. The blackJohn Hanson was a Senator not a President in 1856 so of course he won’t be in it.
And the White John Hanson wasn’t the first President of Congress he was the 7th.
Peyton Randolph, Henry Middleton, Henry Laurens, John Jay, Samuel Huntington, Thomas McKean, John Hanson, Elias Boudinot, Thomas Mifflin, Richard Henry Lee, John Hancock, Nathaniel Gorham, Arthur St. Clair, and Cyrus Griffin.
Not true. It is John Hanson.
I noticed that there was a man on the top left in the middle of a 5 person row on the $2 bill and in the painting he is not in it and its a 4 person row, who is that dude?
If you watch the full documentary, I believe somewhere around the half-hour mark, a full explanation of who was in, then out, then added into the painting is provided. czcams.com/video/4b3TczZpC_Y/video.html
I never even noticed 😂
Thanks!
Thank you so much! Really appreciated. I wonder if I'll get that as a $2 bill...
There's a difference in my stupid marking on a $2 bill extinctive mark when you see at the back or the front
I always thought that was Robert Morris of PA, aka “the financier of the Revolution”.
I thought it was Wentworth Chesswell. The first black judge elected in 1768.
All I'm gonna say is I don't think a painting or even multiple paintings can be actually used as evidence to convince people. I'm not saying he was black or white I'm just saying that they could have painted anyone any color the painter wanted to color them.
I respect the comment. All I can say is, the painter is capturing a moment in time that he witnessed. I can't imagine he would've intentionally changed one man from white to black because he "wanted to". It's more likely the intricate printing process at the Bureau of Engraving & Printing yielding a man with this color face, as described in the video.
He wasn't a slave he was the president of the us before the named it the us
There were 2 DIFFERENT men named John Hanson. One was "President" while the other was a slave.
I lived in Maryland, where Johnson was from.
He was the first President of the Continental Congress.
He was a white man.
WHO WAS #12?
The Man to the left of 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.
Didn't know there was one he looked green to me.
Agreed. If he were truly a black man, the way the bill was engraved and printed, his face would be much darker (like the front end of the tablecloth he's sitting at)
I noticed that a man is missing in the 2 dollar bill or there is an extra man in the painting, idk look in-between the man looking back at the row behind the character thought to be a black man there is a man in the painting in-between but not in the 2 dollar print why is that?
Good observation. I actually covered this in detail in the full feature film, which is on this channel. I believe it's somewhere between the 20 and 30 minute mark, as the history of the bill and the 1976 redesign is covered. They removed several people from the painting and switched around two others, in part because there were two versions of the painting. Go take a look! You may enjoy the whole film too. czcams.com/video/4b3TczZpC_Y/video.html

John Hanson…

Alexander Hamilton wasn’t even fully white that is why the Puerto Rican actor played him in the stage play. His mother was Caribbean btw.
The actor that played him - Lin Manuel Miranda - did so because he wrote it and wanted to play the part. He was not "cast" because he was Puerto Rican.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary if u want to believe that so be it but one thing that is for sure they both have Caribbean ethnicity and are not fully white.
@@dlb2720 I know Hamilton was born about 200 miles from Puerto Rico, on the island of Nevis. But what I said is still true - Miranda wrote the play and decided to take the lead role. He didn't do so just because he was Puerto Rican. And what difference does it make in regards to the back of the $2 bill? The facts in that video are all correct. @@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary but do you agree that these men were trespassing on American soil. Along with all the others caucasians?
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Yeah, but "america did erase alot of blackness from America's history" true right? Like how the indigenous natives were black and then later classified as African American to mix in with African slaves and forget their true rights to this land?

This still leaves the question of whether a black man ever lead the nation under the Articles of Confederation.
John Hanson was black. Black father and Indian mother of our family decent.

Is there such thing as a one dollar coin 🪙 in the United States?
Yes. It's a gold coin Like the $2 bill, not used or requested very often though.
I like your Videos. But I am going to question your research because if there was an ink blot why isn’t several of the men printed darker. I tell you guys just can’t help yourself. It’s okay to tell the True BlackStories.
You can question my research, but maybe you want to research it yourself. All you have to do is look at the original painting this was based on - he's clearly white. And there are several websites (including the Treasury's) that list each person by name. Furthermore, ask yourself why each man's jacket is a different shade. Is that a conspiracy? I'm upset that people think I'm hating on blacks here. Perhaps it was my tone. But the tone is really to be convincing of the simple FACTS. It has nothing to do with blacks or whites. I'm just correcting people who insist on wrong information.

How they have a printing press issue with just that face. But there are multiple white faces on the same press. Sounds like bull to me.
It's not a printing press issue. It's the engraving itself. If it's a millimeter deeper than the other faces, it takes on more ink and will come out darker. These are hand-carved engravings, so a difference in faces is entirely possible - just look at how dark some men's coats are compared to others. Is that a conspiracy too?
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary that reply was worthless. All the other faces are correct. How is there only one that is not?
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary why are there not three or four faces with the same issue? That would be more likely with an engraving issue.
Why can't you just accept it? I've done the research; you haven't. You know what they say, a simple truth is harder to believe than a complex lie. I don't gain anything by being right or wrong. I did a full documentary on $2 bills, and I filmed $2 bills being made at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The workers there, who handle the engravings to make the printing plates, all say the same thing. Common knowledge there. But yet you somehow know more. Yes, more faces that come out that way would seem to make sense, but it didn't happen. Plus, for crying out loud, look at the original painting by John Trumbull! What's more likely - the guy who painted this in the 1800s mistakenly made the guy white, or the engraving, hand-carved in the mid-1970s, was done in a way that took on more ink?
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary the guy drew it wrong in the 1800s. That’s more likely to me. When the picture was made by a bunch of slave owners. For a bunch of slave owners.
Ok I’m looking at the 2 dollar bill. The picture they are showing is very different from the bill itself. There are people that are missing and inconsistencies in the positions of how the men are sitting…. The picture on the bill is much older than the picture they depict here. Non the less they are not the same… so maybe in reality it is a black man.
It's not a black man, period.
As a side note if you want to see how the picture on the back evolved from the original painting, please watch the full documentary film on this channel - it's somewhere between the 20 and 30 minute mark. There were two versions of the painting, and pieces of each appear on the bill.
Likely?? This is not an explanation. This dude is the ONLY dark face on this bill.
The details are facts. I've provided further info links in the description.

That’s a white man
Correct. That's what the video says.
The man isn't black despite how he looks? Lol! An i aint alve despite how im talking ! Thats a black man dude !
Did you actually watch the video? Have you seen the original painting? Read any of the numerous excerpts? The man is white, documented in many places. The printing process has shadowed his face. You can be wearing brown underwear - it doesn't mean you crapped yourself.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary thsts pure intellectualism you're are spitting out bro. Look at the man's woolen hair. Thats a black man. Thats why America got rid of the paper note to eliminate history. As usual. But if Thats what you believe.
Again, do some research instead of assuming your opinion - based on a bill printed in 1976 as opposed to a painting from someone over a hundred years earlier - is correct. The reason I made this video is because people like you are closed-minded and assume that what's visually in front of them HAS to be correct. I know he looks black, but what's the more logical explanation - that two versions of the painting and all history books are wrong, or that the engraver who created the printing plate in 1976 dug out a fraction of an inch too much, causing more ink to convert to the the bill? Or maybe that engraver knew the truth over all else and took it upon himself to accurately portray history. You go with your opinion; I'll go with my facts.
$2 bill is worthless
Incorrect. It's worth $2, which is twice the value of a $1 bill.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭they love changing history. Dont fall for this bs, guys they were caught up n r trying to double back. That was a black man AND he was A MOOR. its the reason we have a treaty with the moors and everything.
Stop your conspiracy theories and DO SOME RESEARCH. Look up the original painting - both versions. The video explains it all truthfully, with no bias, prejudice, or anything else you might be accusing me of. Just because you don't like it or don't agree doesn't make it false. Maybe some day people in this country will understand that.

Why would you say that? That's presumptive and rude. The video is not a comment on race - it's factual information for people who don't know the real story.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary if that's not how it was intended it is what it is.... but as I watched it, it seemed that way too me.
I can see how you would think that, but my tone was more about debunking a stubborn idea that is clearly false (with obvious evidence everywhere) than it was about the actual color of the man's skin. Too many people are convinced he's black and won't accept facts as evidence. I don't care what race the man is - and it would be great if he WAS black - but it's simply not the case.
