  • How did the 2 dollar bill become so uncommon in our culture? What led to the bill being looked at as a novelty or collector's item? The director of The Two Dollar Bill Documentary looks at the bill's evolution, and what happened when it was re-issued for the nation's Bicentennial in 1976. It all makes perfect sense now!

What I’d really like to see is a decently designed $1 coin that everyone can get onboard with. That way, the $2 bill would be the smallest note in circulation and would become more commonly used. At least, that’s my theory… and I’m sticking to it! 😬

I agree get them and spend them. I would rather carry five $2 bills then 10 $1 bills. I also wish more people would use half dollars. We always used them when I was a kid.

I remember $2 bills mainly as "bait" used by convenience stores, taxi drivers and pizza delivery drivers. Often used on "clip alarms,", a device that fit in the drawer where the alarm was tripped when two, two dollar bills were removed. The theory was the $2.00 bills were odd enough they would be known not to use or after a robbery police would take note.

Good question. The government actually DOES advocate people to use twos because they save money on printing if more people would use them. It's just that people don't. Good possible question for a future video though.

The Two Dollar Bill Documentary yes great question, another could be why you get the looks from cashiers when trying to use them. These are all great comments - thanks everyone. The looks from cashiers will continue until those cashiers understand that the $2 is normal currency. If $2s start getting used more, cashiers can adjust their registers accordingly. I doubt they'll ever get rid of $1s, but they should stop making them, as there are already over 11 billion out there. let them slowly fizzle out.

While I was supervising the intake area of a county jail in NJ a few years ago, there was always a disproportionate amount of 2 Dollar bills in the possession of incoming inmates that had to be logged with the rest of their money and property. I couldn't figure out why so i asked an inmate who had some who possessed a few when he was getting booked. He explained that the local adult bar "gave them out as change all the time". He further explained that the twos were then used as tips for the dancers and at the bar which effectively doubled their tips as there were more two's than one's circulating in the establishment.

As merchant, I TRIED giving One-Dollar coins and Two-Dollar Bills as change -- for about 2 years. But there were just too many negative reactions. It got to the point that we had to ASK customers if they would be willing to have dollar coins or two dollars bills back. More than 60 percent of people simily didn't WANT them. A big part of it was that many people felt obligated to KEEP them as collectible rather than to use them as real money for spending. So, if it was their last few dollars, they didn't want them as they needed 'Real Money' that they could spend.

From what I read back in the 70's, the Treasury wanted to save money from making the highly used $1 bills. So they decided to start printing a $2 bill to replace the $1 bill and in the $1 bill's place, they would make a $1 coin, just slightly larger than a Quarter. So to avoid people from confusing the $1 coin from the Quarter, they colored it gold and put the Indian maiden, Sacajawea on it. Needless to say, that idea went over like a led balloon. Everyone hated the new coin. Vending machines couldn't take them. No one wanted to use them or the $2 bill. To this day, you have people either hording them or businesses not wanting to deal with them.

    • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary
      @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary  Před 5 lety

The dollar coin came in a little later than you suggested. In the 70s, the idea was that by printing more $2 bills, the government could save money, since you could get twice as much money made with half the paper. It was never intended that the $1 bill would be replaced - they just wanted to print less of them. It didn't work. Then later on they went the $1 coin route as you said, and it failed. The most one dollar coins I've ever seen in one place is in a mobile app for iPhones called The Container. You have to guess how many of something is in a container, and on one of the early levels, they filled a giant pot with dollar coins. Worth a look - it was around 2500 of them. Anyway, thanks for the comment!

She was looking for something different she said....I have received a bank sealed package every year on my birthday now for twenty nine years. My mother took up the cause after my grandmother passed away.and has purchased a sealed pack at Wells Fargo every year up until 2020 when for the first time she was unable to get them unopened so she was forced to buy just a circulated bunch I have never found any other people with any interest in these bills until today when I happened across this thread I have always wondered if there is any value to my collection other then the face value of $200.00 a bundle?? I love to pull them out of my safe and show friends they are truly beautiful notes...

I grew up through this period and was once in retail in the 70's and later in banking in the 80's. There was ANOTHER REASON the $2 (which I loved to see) failed in retail (and Banking). Cash registers and Teller drawers had bills slots for $1-5-10-20's and 'Large'. In retail Checks went under the tray. There was no place for the $2 to go, 5 slots is all there were.
in both retail and banking it was important to keep the denominations separate. Putting 'Large' under the tray was a recipe for loss and in addition we were trained, in both retail and esp. banking, to keep all bills aligned properly. I think this was a contributing reason the $2 failed.
The gov't should have stopped making the $1 when dollar coins came back -but that was almost as sacrosanct as the proposal to eliminate the Penny...

Every time I go to the bank I ask if they have any $2 bills. About half the time they do, and the other half they don’t. Even when they do, it’s only about $10-$20 worth. My question is, do banks still order $2 bills?

You'd probably love this video then: czcams.com/video/bpfBAwf2HPI/video.html Banks order $2s when they need or want them. Usually it's just based on need, because a customer has requested them. They don't order them just because they want them in their cash drawers.

I rode a motorcycle in the '70s and it would take about 2$.50 to fill the tank with gas. I always kept 2s in my wallet for that purpose. I still have 2 bills from then now in 2019 as momentos I could actually use. I'm also thinking of getting some from the bank to keep with them.

People keep giving me two dollar bills because they think I collect them. I don't, well, I didn't. I guess I have a collection now because anywhere I'd try to spend them would probably think I'm insane trying to pass along "fake" money.

Why does America have such low denomination notes/bills? In many European countries the lowest is £5/€5/5

I always try to get them when I go to the bank. Its fun to use them and half dollars when younger people are running the cash register. Some reactions are funny, including a time when a girl used a money marker to see if it was real... Good times
