I never thought that a 70s model would cost a thousand euros or more. For the price alone, I see no reason to buy one.
I remember when mid range used to be 200-300 € now its 600+......
@@RoyalLemonade yup. Still remember when I got used gtx 970 for ~290€ (price inflation adjusted) and remaining warranty.
Well technically its a 60 card. Cut down to only 46% "normal for the base 60" orignally called it an 80 card and wanted to charge 1k usd for it
@@dralord1307 Well true, but everyone gets the point.
I like how prices sky rocketed in the time where people started struggling financially. Strange timing.
Or nvidia still lives in cryptodream and covid dream where even 1030 could be sold for 100€
I really miss the old days, when I got my gtx 980 for 550€. Don't get me wrong, I love my 3080ti even though it cost me almost 1700€, but man these prices are horrible.
Jay's saying the same thing I've been: Companies saw those pandemic scalper prices people were paying, and went absolutely insane with greed. In my ideal world, every last one of these cards would be sitting on shelves gathering dust and costing these companies a fortune until they offered steep price cuts out of desperation.
There is this, but there is also the fact that the crypto market isn't there to carry their expected margins anymore.
So Nvidia in this case expects gamers to now carry on spending and covering the same price and demand as the miner's did, the miners that made money on these GPUs back in the day.
That's the thing. The consumer can vote with their wallet. Don't pay those insane prices. But we know people will pay those prices...
I can see Jensen going like "omg people just don't know what's good anymore. THE COST OF PRODUCTION HAS SKYROCKETED!!! People are not realizing that!! Sad... PC Gaming must be dead, people just don't value the quality of RTX, DLSS and our ENORMOUS investments anymore! Time to focus on Datacenter and AI more..."
rather than "Oh well, maybe there is a problem with the price?"
@@andyg.2013 Buy a 4xxx series once the 5xxx series releases and you will probably get a good deal.
Agreed. And they will sit on Shelfes. Dont worry. Sure, at first, they will sell. Like the 4080 now is as well since AMD had 3 different Hickups...
But we too know that Nvidia wasnt making a Ton of 4080 to Beginn with and the same is with this Card now... Seems a little bit less even. So yes... while it seems they are still selling... they arent as good as many want you to think.
I will start buying those at 400 and 700 Dollars. Because thats what they are worth it...
(Compare the Die Size and you will see what i mean)
Man my 1070 at $400 was super expensive. Pricing nowadays is insane.
Well that would've been around 500 nowadays, and adjusted to manufacturing costs they would probably have similar margins it's just that as time goes on its going to get harder for us to get stuff cheap, their share holders want constant good returns
bought my 980ti's for 750 and 300 bucks a piece in 2015 and 18, thought the first fullprice one was crazy and i had buyers remorse for weeks.
bought a base 1080 on release at 600, same price as the 4070. Given that its been 9, almost 10 years, I could see this price increase in the 70 series as fair.
but the increase of more than 100 dollars for the 70ti / 80 series is way too much. No way would I consider a 4080 at double the price of a 4070
I'm like you. Seeing the skyrocketed prices of graphics card, I will just buy my new PC keeping my 1070. Nvidia can go f itself.
@@spaceidiot200 Luckily prices have come down quite alot. I bought a 3080 for €400 since the 40 series is still too expensive. Traded my 1080ti and got 200 in hand so not too bad
All I can say is that I agree 100% - the quick grab for cash by tech industry right now to "recoup losses" is astounding to me. It's clear that Sales Engineers and CEOs of the tech industry and retailers are no longer the best and brightest out there, rather they are all scrambling to "grow the company" as fast as possible because that is all that wallstreet requires to validate them as successful companies, even though this "Growth" comes at the cost of the quality of product and consumer acceptance. SMH
that's why they kicked evga out cause they knew evga would go public if they kept them in the loop
Nvidia's view of growth will come at the cost of "customers".
@@raven4k998 - EVGA did the right thing leaving the GPU market when they did.
@@buggerlugz6753 yeah they did as Nvidia is making gpu that self destruct now🤣🤣
@Jack Sparrow either you are joking, or that is the most bias solution I've heard yet
I remember the gtx 970 being $300. At this rate, the 4050 is going to be the same cost as a whole computer.
My first GPU cost £20 in 2004...brand new, 50 series card equivalent in its product stack..now they want the price of a whole PC for one GPU... >_>
Back in the day I won my GTX 970 at a LAN, and was able to sell it for $400 brand new. As of the last 12 months, I saw I could still sell it for the same price. In fact, the average I saw was $600. That's bonkers! The card is almost a decade old!
my first pc was a gift from my folks, had an msi 100me gtx970. big tech really went full retard since then.
@@boffyrox2 I'm still rocking my gtx970. Great card.
Yeah I remember when you could spend $1000-1200 for a good upper mid tier computer. (DIY not prebuilt).
We as gamers need to come together and vote with our wallets. Don't buy the cards, don't buy anything especially from the scalpers. Let the greedy corporations feel a hole in their pocket so that next time it might give them pause to consider treating their customers with respect and remind them who got them where they are now.
Most go to crypto farms or scalpers anyways, and what little inventory not bought by gamers would just give the aforementioned even more product. :(

Thank you for some very entertaining and informative commentary there.
Yeah everytime I start pricing a gaming machine for my son - I stop shopping like 2 or 3 components down the list...
the selection process gets daunting and even the entry level systems have a price point thats past what a new console costs here in South Africa...
and given my first edition Xbox One is still going strong (he mostly plays Fortnite and Minecraft) and is not losing any sleep over the Frame Rates or even missing 4K - I reckon I will stay in my lane for now. 😆
I was looking for a lower end graphics card like the RTX 3060 - RTX 3060Ti but the price is way to much. I found a RX 6700 XT delivered for $380 I'm coming from a GTX 1660 super. Really happy with my decision saved money and received something faster then the RTX 3060.
The 4060 will perform as 3070, and priced as 3070.
Great progress 👏
@The Boeing Kid paying 550 dollars to only gain efficiency seems like a poor purchase. the only appeal is for people on super old hardware. and even then its not really appealing. if i could play cyberpunk (albeit not great) on a now decade old 290x. some of these legacy gamers may not want to feed the obvious money grab
@The Boeing Kid bro that’s no point to make, a lower electric bill is not directly in Nvidia’s power. It would still depend on your local rates
@@somad6997 yeah and then there is also an option to get yourself used rtx 3070 still in warranty for 350 .
and if you only play at 1080p even better you can grab rtx 2070 / 2060 super for 200-250 bucks .
no need to pay 500-800 for new cards .
There are some 2000 series cards benching better than the bottom 3000 series ones do. What's the point in 'upgrading'?
My current rig is about 4bn years old and I'm about to build a brand new one with a 6700XT - even that is nearly £500 and is a joke compared to the 4090 and suchlike.
Friend of mine built a budget COVID rig in 2021 and got a 1080Ti because that's all that she could get in budget.
The GPU market is very broken.
@@cocodanuts3497 whilst i do agree with you, lower power consumption = lower electricity bill, it doesnt matter what local rates are, if a gpu has less power consumption you save money.
Again i completely agree that its not the point to make, and frankly buying a card just so it performs the same as an older gen card but has better efficiency at more of a cost just isnt good

go get a job. 4080 owner here.
Interesting coming back to this video 5 months later. 3090 Ti is still ~$1,600 on Amazon while 4070 Ti can be easily had for $799 (including several model options). Considering the massive improvement to efficiency, that makes the 4070 Ti seem like a great option. It is still expensive, which everything is, but in the actual landscape of GPU pricing it provides solid value. Just wish it had 16GB of VRAM rather than 12.
Ive bought it for USD600 today
I bought a 4070ti a few weeks ago when a local hardware shop had a limited sale of Gainward Phoenix 4070ti cards for 750€ and it's a good card. Was it kinda expensive? Yes. Was it worth it compared to the RX 6750 XT I had before? Hell yes, its basically twice as fast as my "old" RX 6750 XT.
I got it 3 days ago and it feels like I'm watching reviews from another world
I got my Palit 4070Ti GameRock for 1,000USD when it came out. Keep in mind prices in Bulgaria are always higher than the US or most countries for that matter. At the time of purchasing, second hand 3090 TIs were still going for 1,500USD+, if you could even find one. 3080 Tis were going for around 1,500USD brand new, and around 900-1,100USD second hand. Thus why I chose to go with the 4070Ti, as it's brand new and has 2 years of warranty.
I do not regret my purchase. Even with that price, my whole system turned out to around 1700 USD.
Performance is great at 1440P, at 4K you do need DLSS in some titles if you want higher FPS, but Frame Gen does help a lot with that. At 1080P, it gets bottlenecked by my CPU (R5 5600X). It's actually a pretty decent GPU in my opinion, though, the price could've been better.
And yes, it could've benefitted from 16 gigs of VRAM instead of 12, as some games fill that up. *cough* TLOU Part 1...
I bought one today for £779.50 ($1000) upgrading from 2070 super
thanks for the insight and info. Really enjoyed the video, and you're also hilarious and entertaining. I'm subbed, keep up the great work Jay!
You're spot on about the relationship between scalpers and profit. Nvidia doesn't care as long as they keep the pandemic era margin. That's reflected in every decision they made with the 40 series. It's sickening. I'll stick with my 2060S until it dies. Next time I'll be looking at a different OEM.
That's every single company in the United States. Not a single one has your or any customers best interest. AMD does exactly 100% the same thing so good luck finding a good GPU provided by a company that doesn't do these things, it doesn't exist.

Worst case scenario you can just pick up a used card. Screw these guys. Instead of two sales, the used market caps that at one.
Now that Im seeing this, despite seeing the performance in the 4090, makes me understand why EVGA left as a board partner. Theres no way the other manufacturers are making money off these cards.
And NVidia would be totally fine with every single one of their AIB's going under. When Nvidia sells FE cards they get 100% of the profit margin. That looks delicious.
@Diomedes I just got a 3080. I don't need that much power since I don't really play powerful games.
My First GPU I built for my first System build was a Titan X. I was able to order it from NVIDIA a day or two after release, easy to purchase. Sure NVIDIA eventually came out with the 980ti's with only 200 less cuda cores for cheaper but that was 6+ months later and my watercooled GM200 was still beating 980ti's. That was the last time I've bought a top of line the GPU. Currently have a 2060 lol. Waiting for Zen 5 and next gen graphics then I'll probably build a new system. 4790 and Titan X, now I have a 9700k and 2060, next will be Zen 5 and high\mid tier gpu
Great video Jay. It's always good to hear real world frustrations from respected content creators. Still using EVGA 1070Ti, but in 4K I need now new card, 4080 will be great. Keep up the good work 👍👍
Get an Rx 7800xt or an Rx 7900xt both of those cards are absolute Herculean beasts for value for money compared to any 40 series card from Nvidia or pay for a used Rx 3080ti
last minute of this video expressed EXACTLY how the gamers feel to the stuff we love. It makes us happy to play with these stuff, but It indeed is sad to see how the industry has become.
I am not the biggest Jay fan but I agree. I admit his little speech at the end about hardware hit home.
It’s the democrats, uniparty republicans, and the neo-leftist west to blame for causing the inflation to begin with. I can’t blame nvidia for adjusting the prices so they can get the same margins.
Gamers keep buying these cards ... Just look on Reddit ... You've people complaning on the r/Nvidia about prices, and 2 days later, the sames posting their new Lovelace card ... What the f*** ....
It's the gamers that are to blame, they're the one's paying over-inflated prices hand over fist. I guess they want their console ports to run at 200+ fps?
Firstly, the majority of people are not buying these cards due to the economy in a global recession/depression. These cards are inflated to prevent "regular" people from spending and leaving it to those that can afford it. The government wants people to be broke, jobless, and homeless in order to stop inflation. When they initially stated that we were going to be in bad times until 2025/2026 this was the truth.
The fact you've mentioned the cost of living and compared it to the prices of these cards was great. These companies just throw cards out with a random number price on it and expect people to go for it. I'm in the market for a full system upgrade and I'm currently so tired of reading reviews and conflicting opinions as to what to buy I almost cannot be bothered. GPUs are the biggest pain the ass currently. Everything else was fairly straightforward.
Older cards are the way to go depending on what resolution you’re hoping to run I picked up my rx580 nitro for 90 before covid struck, there’s definitely bargains if you look
Thing is, plenty of people just go for it
@Diomedes I was looking at a 3070. I'm going to get an i5 13600K CPU and they seem like a good pairing.
@@thefirstbushman This guy hit the nail on the head.
Unless you have a serious need for bleeding edge performance from a GPU, you'll do very well with something from even up to 3 generation back. And those can get very affordable.
@@viowithcrailtap i've recently bought that combo, easily 100/150+ fps on very high settings (1440p). Very happy with them
Jeez. I discovered gaming PCs two days ago and wanted to build one on the upper end. Buuuut maybe I also hold off until this whole thing levels out. Thanks for the video, Jay. This is nuts...
IMO this tier creeping comes primarily from the 4K gaming push. Nvidia knew they didn't have the juice to push 4K, but they told us they did as far back as the 1080 ti, using cherry-picked benchmarks and tricks (which has now gone as far as FRAME INTERPOLATION) to portray their products as more capable than they actually are. But because they couldn't push out 80-series cards capable of achieving the performance gamers wanted and expected (based on Nvidias own lies), they slowly started pushing the tiers up. Now they're just building cards with 90-series performance, giving them 90-series prices, but calling them 80-series (and likewise all the way down the product stack), and it's because of the bullshit 4K push. They want you to feel like your "mid-range" 4070 ti is super-capable. It's not. If it was actually built to a mid-range price point under the hood, today's 4070 ti would perform the same as a 3070 ti (because the 3070 ti is more like a 3080 ti, price-wise). Oops, it's almost like they squeezed in an entire generation of false progress by giving higher-end cards the names of lower-end cards! They jumped the gun on 4K, misled consumers about their capability for generations, and now they have to keep covering up their lies with more lies, because if they release a new generation of cards and are honest about the performance from the start it's gonna brutalize their stock price and PR. The stagnation would catch up with them, and they would lose an entire generation worth of progress, undoing the years-long pricing games they employed. They can never let that happen, so more lies and more tricks is all we're gonna get.
Worth mentioning: of course the tensor cores contributed to the cost increase and overpricing in each tier. We're all forced to pay for those things, whether we use them or not. But that little bit of extra hardware isn't responsible for pushing these cards 2 tiers up in price.
What would you do if you had a 2080 TI at 1440? I dont play games at FULL max... I am happy with upper medium settings with lower shadows etc.... should I wait to buy anything?
@@charlesbukowski9836 I'd personally wait, only bought a 4070 recently to replace a base 1080 9 year old card. You already have raytracing and it can keep up with high settings on most game

is not their fault, stupid people that buys shit just for the argument that "i have money, I can buy anything I want" without taking in consideration what they are buying, if they need it and even IF they spend every dollar they got, and that's where inflation starts
@@luissalguero686 It is their faul, too. Sure the people that purchase everything without thinking about it, even from sculpers are not the smartest but if for example nvidia would restrict the order amount to one card (or even 5) per address the sculpers had less chances to get their hands on an infinite amount of cards and sell the for around double the price. But what they did is raise their prices since stupid people would buy it anyway. As a company it is understandable. They want money and as long as the cards get sold it doesn‘t matter to them who will pay them. But that is the point. I know, we cant go back in time, but it's sad to know what new people to the hobby will have to endure, or miss out on entirely, in the current 'era'.
Consumers brought it upon themselves when they patronized scalpers. The only way to bring it back to pricing before the pandemic is to stop buying gpus.
It's $400 cheaper and 20% faster than a 3080ti in rasterization... what's the problem?
@@TonyMariani The problem is the price 'bracket' for each has gone up and keeps going up while the performance increases have reduced. That means, you aren't getting your money's worth like you did before or should be getting.
We need good healthy increases if they want these price increases.
@Zoran that's only true if nvidia doesn't release cards in lower price brackets. If the 4050 ends up being $400 but 20-30% faster than a 3070 then it would be a good value still. For all we know, nvidia could release a reasonably priced 4030 in the low end segment that beats the 3050. Seems to me they are just advusting the model numbers to make room for more skus across the price range.
@@TonyMariani $400 for a 3070 performance? What? 😅
For $400 you should be getting 3080 performance not 3070. Example, the 1060 for $300 was pretty much a 980 while the 1070 was a 980ti.
The 70s usually cover the previous series' Titans and the 4070ti still does that but the price does not match a 70s price range or even an 80s price range. This price range is beyond 😆
No one is getting their 'value' for their money at all, that's why 3000 series are being bought up and you can still see 4080s on the shelves.
The only card despite its price that actually makes huge increase in performance is the 4090. At least the performance is there. That is why, it's the only one that is being bought out of the 4000 series. To buy this card, you either need that increase, have extra cash or for work. These aren't gamer prices, these are enthusiast gamer prices. Majority of us aren't enthusiast hence why 'Nvidia hates gamers'.
It's OK, Jensen will have to lower the prices even further or be more realistic next 5000 series. The years ahead don't look good for the economy so we will see and he knows, oh he knows our cards last year's and he has to please his investors. Ticker has been dropping before the announcement, how far will it drop still since all the reviews of the 4070ti aren't good, in fact worse than the 4080.
What track starts playing around 13:35 until about 15:45 in the background? That beat's smooth and would love to know. Far as GPU companies they've lost the plot years ago and have gone completely crazy with their prices, Still have my old RT 580 that's been doing the job just fine but I know I'll need to replace it soon, but with prices like these I'm in absolutely no hurry to do so.
3 months later. In Australia the 4070 ti is selling for a bit over $1300 AUD ($800 USD accounting for GST). This is around the upper end of the normal 3080 pricing.
Went from a 1660 super to a 3060ti for $300 on black friday. THAT was worth it. I'll wait till the 5000's. Loved your advice and honest take. You just got another follower

Yeah. Helped my friend build a new computer and he went from a 970 to rx 6700xt for $310. Pretty good.
I was nuts back in the day, I had a little disposable cash and bought a Titan Black for over $1,100. I thought I was crazy for spending over $1k on a graphics card. It was fun though, having bleeding edge performance. Ironically, I sold that card for as much as I paid for it one year later after the 1070 was released. I bought the 1070 at release for $500, and pocketed the $600 difference. The performance was identical, and that's a real value proposition. The Titan Black was the only tech thing that I have ever sold later for as much as I paid for it. Then crypto went insane, there were card shortages, prices shot through the roof, then Covid. The whole time I have kept my 1070 waiting for prices (and availability) to come back to reality. Honestly, at this point, this is just an insult from Nvidia. By pricing this way, I'll just hold onto my existing card for longer. Previously, I purchased a 780, 980, Titan Black, and a 1070 from Nvidia. Oh well, if that's the way they want to play it, games are still fun with my 1070.
Maybe I'll buy one card from them every decade - it's already been 6.5 years on the 1070 and I am still enjoying it. I never thought I'd own a graphics card for as long as a car.
tbh those all seem like crypto cards. at the appropriate msrp very convenient .
I still run a 980Ti… and moved on to console gaming. I dont care anymore.
I had a 1070 and sold it during the COVID crypto boom I got back what I paid for it 5/6 years ago
@@johnbartender3451 same here -- I'm still running a Maxwell era card and almost stopped caring now. I still have a few grand set aside for a new future PC build, but I'm just not interested at these outrageous scalping prices. If pricing doesn't come down significantly by the end of the year, I'll probably switch to a gaming laptop -- Nvidia can still sell 3070 level laptop cards for an at cost price of around 300 USD or so to OEMs with similar or same specs (just undervolted and downclocked significantly), so there's clearly a huge margin for them to cut into.
I think they're only pricing new cards so high to encourage people to buy up the rest of the 30 series first.
I know it sounds unrealistic, but once they're gone, then prices might fall somewhat, because Nvidia know they are pricing themselves out of sales at this level price/performance (currently that's ok for them because they don't want to undermine sales of their 30 series stock). But once their 30 series cards are cleared, then they won't have anything that mid to lower end buyers will realistically buy (at least not many will pay current prices) so I figure (or hope) 40 series prices should start to fall a little, probably in modest steps, so they can try and tempt more people to bite.
This all ignores the potential impact of competition from AMD and maybe Intel. Although AMD haven't matched the 4090 in performance, they will be able to match lower end 40 series cards, and have lower marginal cost. So hopefully they will undercut nvidia to steal market share. If that happens then defensive price cuts from nvidia may come sooner. At least this is all in principle, anyway. Cross your fingers and don't pay extortionate prices for cards guys
I haven’t built a computer in 20 years, just gamer on console. But, the last few nights these videos have been recommended to me, so I started watching them. There's soooooo many persons with that hardware combination that are still waiting for the right time to upgrade. I'm honestly really glad that I managed to grab my 3070 FE at MSRP, if prices stick at the current ludicrous levels going forward then I highly doubt I'll be upgrading any time soon. If there is something we can learn from this, it's that they can put the prices that they want and there is not much we can do about it. But if we stop buying it, they have to bring them down. The 4000 serie is not selling as it is expected and we can keep it that way until they make a move.
Exactly, supply and demand. A seller can ask whatever price they want. The buyer has the choice to say no and either: hold out, or seek a competitive product. This card isn't 'top of the line' and shouldn't cost more than an entire console (PS5). In fact, if NVIDIA keeps this up, I suspect it will hurt game sales of AAA titles on the PC in the future. Or, alternatively this will boost AMD if they get their prices down.
Lol expecting microchip prices to go down during ww3 is the best proof of debility.

Tbh, soon GPU's will be used for AI calculations. They will be more expensive and this is only a begining. At the end of the day you will end up with no GPU at all. There will be only some kind of a wireless display or VR set for your mobile device and cloud streaming. This is sad. Yeah. Deal with it.
No, economies of scale matters as well. You will source a larger amount of older cheaper cards (or of older, simpler manufacturing process) if it will cost less but give xomparable performance to the latest cards.
When you consider that nvidia convinced its userbase that generating fake frames is a good thing, yeah, not the brightest bunch and they'll continue overpaying for whatever nvidia puts out.

i WAS planning on picking up the 4070 to replace my 2070sup but yeah that price increase has got me thinking that I don't really need an upgrade right now. Especially since VR, which was my main reason for upgrading GPUs previously, is going through what I will politely put as a "dry spell" in terms of good games.
The dry spell was always coming when people couldn't afford to keep their companies afloat due to low sales. Most companies in the space were banking on Mark Zuckerberg not being a literal clown and for the metaverse to actually take off. Problem is, the entire concept of the metaverse can't take off because it's a literally incoherent concept as stupid in principle as the idea of a flying car (you mean a small plane, it's called a small plane, most planes have wheels and can drive). So as a result, all these companies are fucked financially and VR is not going mainstream this or next decade. An attempt was made and it was a failure, it did create a permanent hobbyist VR market which is cool, but that's where it's going to be for many years ahead. There is very little return on VR game development, to say the least. It's basically a guaranteed failure even if you sell a lot. The result is there isn't a large amount of space in the market for many devs, just a few studios that dominate the market, the few studios that already established themselves as leaders, and some hobbyist indie devs that don't expect a lot of return and have very little overhead. It's just not a very profitable market for gaming, and unlike mobile game dev you can't just churn out products with low labor. They are the very opposite in terms of work required per game produced because VR games demand astronomically more labor than other gaming markets do, the assets and engineering have to be very articulate and well conceived.
Same I have a 2060 RTX 6GB it does what I need. 😊
Its exactly what i said to a friend a couple of days ago - prices for card went up a full bracket and i was reffering to the 20 xx and 30xx gen. You could buy a 1060 for 200 euros (3gb ram) or 250 for a 6 GB version and now a 3060 is 400 euros in my coutry at least. This + the shortage drives used cards prices UP also, the are no good deals to be had on the new cards so ppl hold on to their old but stil capable cards, wich is bad for buyers that are willing to pick a used card that sit a bracket higher then their budget will allow when shopping for new cards prices.

We're at an interesting spot where console games are all still benchmarking around the 2070ish range. Most devs are still catering to these experiences when developing games. Making most high 30 series, and 40 series cards for gamers just frame chasing. Which is great if that's what you're into! But for most folks, a 30 series card is MORE than enough to get a solid experience.

I tend to be behind quite a bit in tech on my builds. Value builds typically for me. I'm shocked at the prices still being an issue. Its crazy. I'm looking at upgrading for the first time since 2017 and I'm rocking a 1080ti still so, I'm curious if I should even look at the 4070ti vs the 4080. Or play it safe and go with a 3080? I have a bigger budget than usual, so I'm curious. What would any of you do?
I'm in the process of building a PC too and I decided to wait a bit for the 4070ti prices to drop. I play single player titles mostly on a 2k ultrawide and frame generation seems like a really good and future proofing feature granted game dev companies keep integrating DLSS 3+ into their games. Also currently there's only about a 10% price difference between the 3080 and 4070ti in my country so it seems like a no brainer. Not planning on playing in 4k so I'm not that worried about VRAM to make the 4080 worth (+25% price for me). I'd say if you want to play in 4k, mostly new single player titles then 4080, if 2k is enough then 4070ti, if you're mostly playing online games then 3080.
I think the biggest mistake they made with the 4070Ti (other then the obviously ludicrous pricing) is the fact they cut the memory bandwidth down so much that while it has the memory of a high end card, it has the bandwidth of a budget SKU. Even my 1070 (I bought new in 2016 and STILL am using) has a 256 memory bandwidth. At 1440p I don't think I have ever used more then 60% of my VRAM either, in any title. At this point I am saving up to buy a used 3070-3080 soon as I have two kids and things to pay for and cannot justify spending near $1k or more (the ENTIRE budget of my last PC) on just one part, the GPU. I don't even care if I buy a card that was used for mining, I would rather pay $400 for an old mining card off eBay then spend this much on an overpriced card and contribute to this LUDICROUS pricing
Paid 550 usd for a used 3080 strix. Calling it a day, set for years on 1440p. 2nd hand cards are the way to go.
i got my rx 580 of ebay like 6 years ago it use for mining still run all game on 4k monitors why spend $1500 here au new just file mod get better looking game.
Just picked up a used pny 3080 and it's sick. Temps are hella cool, and it hasn't struggled with anything at 1440
Agreed. I’m still running a 1060 6gb and it plays most games fine at 1440p. Of course it doesn’t have the best graphics but they’re not dreadful! Certainly playable with 50-60 fps and some peaks of 90fps in some scenarios
I have just bought here in the UK a full pc from scan computers £1468 Ryzen 5 5600 palit 3080 16gb Corsair vengeance 3200 with a Samsung 980 pro 1tb plays all my games at 1440p over 100fps why the hell would u pay the ludicrous amount for the 4080 it baffles me think I'm set for years on this rig
check this out: I worked in accounting (controller). It DOES make sense to "sit" on old stock that's massively overpriced and not selling: You register the loss at the time of sale...
You value your inventory according to the nominal price at the time...
So, once you start lowering price, your Profit/Loss and Balance Sheet would look scary and the CEO might get fired.
They are looking for a "spot" to do the price reductions - maybe after the CEO gets his bonus...
I bought my first GPU in 2018. It was a 1060 6GB for AU$350 ($230~ USD). Bought a 6600 XT in 2021 during peak retail/scalper prices for AU$730 ($500~ USD). You can now get them used for AU$350~ but that fact it was more than double for a budget/midrange card was depressing. The 2060 and 3060 both sucked yet kept raising the price.
Yep, been building PCs for friends and family for over 30 years, I just finished my new build for me and ended up spending way too much money to the point where this is probably my last build. And that was without buying from scalpers which I will not do….. GPU was the hardest component to find in stock. Crazy
Suddenly consoles makes sense again.
I spent 1099 on a 3080 last year😢
I just spent $300 on a gently used EVGA 3080 Ti on Offer Up. I love these times of recession. It's like XMAS all over again!
Don't stop making builds! Like another commenter said, a higher 30 series is more than enough for builds. You don't need to go for every updated part. Don't let them ruin your experience.
@@mackan072 They always have.
Im currently on a 1050ti system that I’ve been wanting to upgrade for the past 2 years. It truly feels like my next upgrade will be to a 3-4 year old card, which blows my mind.
Same I have a 1070 I'm going to use until it dies and then I'm simply going to stop PC gaming because the juice isn't worth the squeeze when I can just get a PS5.
Get a rx 6600
1080 Ti for $240 on ebay right now and thats for a hybrid EVGA one. I'm actually getting one off FB marketplace in a few days that just has a bad fan (also a hybrid EVGA card) and thats gonna be getting put in my GF's PC
I still have a strix Rx580 lol
Same im still rocking a 1050 ti. Thinking of upgrading with an old card as well cause of this ridiculous pricing of the new cards.
does a 4070ti make for a good upgrade over my 1080 ti? Still running 8700k, don't want to have to get a new power supply etc.
1440 p gaming
I've got a 3070ti, up from a 1080ti. And I plan on hanging onto this for awhile. I do gameing/streaming in 1080p because 4k is too small for my eyes on normal everyday stuff. We shall see what happens with the 50xx series.
Given what I've seen out of the current generations of GPUs, I'm gonna be content with my 3070 for at least another generation. I don't have 800 dollars to throw at what has turned out to be a very small generational improvement
@@kzgntosbaga6255 exactly as the other person said, I game at 1440p 144hz high and it made the most sense for that at the time. I do agree that upgrading if you're still able to play what you want is pointless, but at the same time 1440/144 just looks a million times better than 1080/60 ever could.
i love my 3070 and am very content for another year or two at a minimum.
I’m still rocking with my 1070ti… not even thinking of upgrading until it explodes at this point.
3070 gang 😎
I completely feel that,rocking a strix 3070 and it runs pretty much anything at 1440p 144hz with a 5900x
The pricing of these cards is outrageous. I'll be sticking with my 2080 for quite a while I think.
I'll be sticking with my 3070Ti.
its still a fine card with all relevant features so why not
I'll be sticking with my 1060

@@ab00781 even 3050 is still good considering its cheap
What you said at the back end regarding the 5000 series being better in terms of pricing will likely be the case as by then we should see the other side of the inflation hill. This is not a defence for Nvidia but anyone who knows the cost of goods and raw materials will acknowledge, stuff ain't cheap right now.
@jayzTwoCents, please indicate of shorter or longer is better on your benchmark graphs.
A big reason to get the 3090 ti is for machine learning applications. There the double amount of VRAM makes it incredibly attractive compared to 4070 ti.
For almost any productivity workflow the 3090Ti is still better than the 4070Ti IMHO. Especially 3D rendering
@@reezlaw Exactly, for me who likes to render large scenes with iRay or Blender, it's all about the VRAM. And 24GB is massive. If energy prices hadn't increased by factor 10 here, I would have already got myself a used 3090/ti to replace my 2080ti!
@@DesGeretGetNet yep, Blender is exactly what I had in mind. I love it!

I appreciate the realism displayed in Jay's content, what the everyday person can afford, and it's most certainly not going to be 60 series performance for 80 series prices.
This card outperforms the previous generations' 90ti in a lot of ways, it's priced right at $800 but the branding is all messed up.
@@krectus Kinda right, but also kinda wrong. Percentage wise it's about right. The problem is the top cards are so expensive that they're throwing the whole price range out of whack. The 1070 for example beat the 980ti for half the price. The 4070ti beats the 3090ti for half the price, but the 980ti was only $700, while the 3090ti is $1500
So realistically what would be a good value card? Ive been researching to build my 1st pc (adter researching years ago, dropping it, now researching again eith all new tech). Everything has gotten even more expensive and i was hoping to keep my budget at $1500. Are amd cards a better choice?
I have a 3070 and would love to get something with a bigger increase.. this card is ok with dlss on but I feel like I’m not getting as good of performance as I should. So I def want an upgrade but cards are crazy expensive again
3070 should be ok for another 2 years

im all happy with my 2070 (and my build) which now is about 4 years old.
Only evert upddated my RAM, and likely switch to a m.2 in the future.
I just bought a 4070ti for $799 USD. I'm replacing my 2080 Super with it. I believe I paid around $750 for the 2080s back when it was new a few years ago. From what I read, it seems like it'll be quite a bit better @1440p. Anywhere from 2 to 4 times the FPS depending on the title. We'll see when it gets here in a couple days. Liked the review, as well as you speaking truth.
which type of 4070 ti did you get and how well is it
@@cravingsoda8686old post, ik, but he probably picked up the PNY brand one on amazon, not a bad brand but they rarely honor warranties
I would love to see the cost/markup prices at each stage of distribution.
Remember the EVGA debacle? The margins were already low at the MSRP set by Nvidia which is why cards will always cost way more than expected from AIBs. That would include packaging and shipping to retailers. AIBs or retailers lowering the cost without Nvidia initiating it means everyone but Nvidia loses money just so they can clear shelves since AIBs purchased the GPU silicon at Nvidia's pricing and retailers at the AIBs price. They would need to be refunded some of that cost before prices can drop well enough, especially for the older cards. That's why a 3900X CPU still costs more than a 5900X.
@@MaxxKoggen to be true I don't give a fuck about retailers. They are the reason for those high prices we have nowadays. Their greed rising prices in cards that launched at a certain price and they more than doubled the price in their stores brought us to this. Zotac RTX 3070 Twin Edge launched at ~$500. It reached $1,200 at retailers. Now it's hard for them to make money because Nvidia and AMD have decided to get the most chunk of that overprice.
It's okay by me. Now the industry from up to down will learn that you don't mess with the customers.
It's easy to have an idea...
Look at the intel arc 3xx, with 6gb of gddr6X.. yes, X... sold at, I think, 159 bucks.
Now, let's assume intel is willing to make at least 50-60 bucks, on each unit sold. We're left with $100. Now, assuming the factory, the guy who imports/ transport, the guy who stores it in a big warehouse, and ultimately, the online retailer, they all make 30-40 bucks, that means the card + packaging + everything else, must cost intel around 50 - 60 bucks, to manufacture...
Now, if we calculate the price of the gpu + pcb assembly +quality assurance + testing + packaging, let's say, 20, 30 bucks max, that means...
Those 6 GB of Gddr6X probably only cost 20 to 30 bucks ! Come on, let's be optimistic, and say the 6GB cost 40 bucks !
That means, the price of these memories aren't exactly what the industry, amd... Nvidia... Sony, etc, wants us to believe !
Then, when Yuku are a big company like Nvidia, you don't order it by the hundreds of by the thousands of units. No. They will order 10k... or even 100k... and that means an extra % price cut.
No, gigabytes of gddr6 or gddr6x don't cost hundreds, if not thousands $, like many want us to believe !
A rtx3090, with 24GB of gddr6x ? Well, Nvidia are probably paying less than 200 bucks, for those 24GB of memory ! Let's say the 3090 pcb and components, + the main gpu, + cooling system + testing and packaging will cost Nvidia 150 to 200 bucks... with 200 bucks for the memory, a 3090 used to cost under $400. Sold at $1999, that's a pretty nice margin.
Seeing that, we can assume that it would only cost 20..or 30 bucks, for the ps5 to have gddr6x, instead of gddr6 ! With gddr6x memory, the ps5 would probably be a +12Tflops system, instead of 10.3TF !.... so GREEDY !
Lol, and when we think Nvidia wanted to charge an extra $200... to go from the 12GB to the 16GB model...
@@albertmas3752the problem with that is then the retailers will just mark it up even more at that point, putting more price on the average gamer.
@@stormwolf8888 then we just do what we've been doing since RTX 4000 and RX 7000 came out: we don't buy and leave the shelves completely full. Until they go bankrupt. Then we can buy all this stuff at 10% its price and dance over the grave of their companies.
Love it when jay doesn't hold back punches and tells it like it is
I love this, literally the best way to resume what gamers are facing, here in my country (Mexico) is funny to see resellers are trying so hard to sell rtx 3080 and 3080 ti used at 4070 ti new price, and that is local, not even to mention resellers who saved new graphics cards under the same result, selling even more expensive than amazon new, just retrards trying to get a hold of the money they've lost.
Been the owner of a titan x v1 since release and decided it was time to upgrade. Totally would've got a nvidia card had the prices not been so stupidly high... 12gb isn't enough and here in the uk the 4080rtx is £1300+ so I instead bought a 20gb 7900xt, never owned an amd before, but nvidia I feel have really dropped the ball here...
I have a GTX 1660 Super that replaced an RX 580 in October when my son upgraded to an RTX 3070. I'm very happy where I am right now, and I'm not considering an upgrade until both Teams Red and Green stop charging scalper prices for their GPUs. Mayhaps Intel will be able to get their stuff together and provide a third viable option.

@@redmoose1447 Its called marketing and is supposed to keep them from needing innovation if they can just gaslight you into buying it regardless.
Technology just simply can't progress more without a major breakthrough. Phones are already all the same for last 5 + years. Soon it will be with graphics cards. It's so little and marginal what you can do with this. People overestimate human progression in technology just because we got this huge jump in last 50 years. But there is only so much you can squeeze out of one creation. This companies rely on making new innovations to survive, but there is just nothing they can do except just add more stuff to it. Like what's the point of 4k or now even 8k? it doesn't do anything. No one can tell the difference. It only eats up more processing power, completely useless. But it gives an excuse for people to buy and for graphics cards to become bulkier with simply more things shoved into it. I mean what do you people expect? Obviously, progression will be really slow soon and less and less people will be upgrading constantly so they prices have to be higher because less people are actually purchasing. In this case simple supply and demand doesn't actually work. There is a limit to how low they can be, and that limit is above what would small enough price point where people that would have not upgraded would upgrade it because it was "just that cheap" So the price has to reflect what people that already are upgrading cards constantly would pay. Most of such people don't really care if its $100 more expensive or not. But that's how company can equalize less people constantly upgrading. It's not only about making money it's about making as much money or more than you made last year. Because, when you made more money, you already have spent it on new jobs / research and possibly new facilities. You got new investors that want to get a return on their investment, which would be impossible if the company makes less money. So that is why the price is the way that it is.
@@redmoose1447 Because our currently technology has reached its limits. And company needs a return on investments.
