    One thing wrong/misssing in the video: US had refused to sell Patriots to Turkey several times before they started talks for S400 with the Russians. Then right after Turkey and Russia agreed for the sale, US offered Patriots to Turkey. This is very important in the timeline for the context.

    • @mistergeopolitics4456
      @mistergeopolitics4456 Před 5 lety +64

      The US outright refused on several occasions, however whenever there were discussions, the Americans refused to include technology transfers with the Patriot system & they could not agree on a price. The S-400 is the superior system & 1/8th the price of the Patriot/THAAD systems. Any nation wishing to purchase American hardware & match the capabilities of the S-400 would have to also purchase the THAAD since the Patriot cannot engage targets at high altitudes.

They have vertical cold launch. so no turret to swing around to a treat. 360 coverage. 3 They have a whole family of missiles, according to the rage and the threat, to 100km to 400km. 4. They are claimed to be able to engage 36 target at time. That can be Russian bs but the Patriot 3 batteries can only engage 9 to 12 targets. 5. They are cheaper.

The SAM countermeasures that the U.S. possesses and uses are world class and have been used successfully in combat.

To say that it’s capabilities have been overhyped, especially after seeing how poorly it’s performed in Ukraine and Syria, would be an understatement. Pretty much the entire Russian military has been overestimated. If there’s one thing that Ukraine was very good at doing is exposing the overly exaggerated Russian military.

      Sanctions against Turkey have nothing to do with this. It has to do with Turkey becoming a dictatorship and increasingly anti-western as well as holding a US citizen hostage.
      Turkeys relations have gotten worse with pretty much ALL NATO nations (European nations as well), who are worries about human rights violations and Erdogan being a dictator.
      Turkey used to be a secular state but Erdogan changes it into an islamist dictatorship.
      The Russian system is overrated (as any Russian system). It has never been proven to be more effective. In fact its missiles that are effective against maneuverable aircraft have a shorter range than Patriot PAC2.
      Ever thought of the idea that NATO wanted to get a member state to have this system? A NATO nation having S-400 will allow NATO personnel to inspect it and to train against it how to defeat it. NATO aircraft regularly train against Greek S-300 which allows NATO to learn how to best counter and defeat it.

    • @napalmstrike2007

      Yes having S-400 is a double edged sword: Yes Turkey can learn how to shoot down F-35s with it, but it can also learn how to dodge S-400s. US is afraid of Russia learning how to defeat an F-35 if Turkey uses S-400s radars, but as I said, it is a double edged blade.
      US sanctions have nothing to do with the so called dictatorship. They just don't like the fact that Turkey is neutralizing their YPG allies.

    • @mistergeopolitics4456
      @mistergeopolitics4456 Před 5 lety +7

      Nope, the THAAD is only capable of shooting down long range ballistic missiles at high altitudes, not jets or drones or cruise missiles or short range rockets/missiles. The S-400 on the other hand is a jack of all trades. The THAAD is arguably better at intercepting long range ballistic missiles since it was specifically designed for that purpose, however the Patriot is surely inferior to the S-400. The S-400 can be setup & ready in 5 minutes, whereas the Patriot takes 15-30 minutes. The missiles of the S-400 travel almost twice as fast as the Patriot. The S-400 can engage more targets & faster targets compared to the Patriot. To sum it up, any nation wishing to match the capabilities of the S-400 would have to purchase the Patriot & the THAAD together. The problem is that the Patriot & THAAD combo together cost EIGHT times more than the S-400 & in the case of Turkey the US has refused to offer technology transfers whereas the Russians have been more than willing.

      3. Now maybe S400 is better as an anti aircraft missile. But from what I remember the Patriot was supposed to be anti Missile not anti Aircraft.
      Also Patriots are what 30 years old? How old is the S400? Some youtube vid quotes an NBC press release from 2012 nearly 21 years after Patriots were being used.

They do generally have the best mobile conventional SAM systems though, that was always a heavy Soviet emphasis due to large and advanced NATO air fleets. They’re definitely lacking in missile defense though. The only weapon in either nations’ inventory that could be considered only for aggressive purposes is the US blue water navy, however. It's also more mobile, as it starts from a TEL, not a trailer, has a 360 radar coverage, has a special mast-mounted radar against low flying targets in the system, etc etc. It would be easier to say that soviet-russian idea of what an air defence system should be is just more complete and better for most buyers. Also it comes without a political baggage and a killswitch.

      It's not even in service, yet! It's meant to replace patriot but when will that happen? I guess the S500 will enter service faster than MEADS. You can compare your newest MEADS with Russia's not-so-new S400 later. It'll be behind the S500 anyway.

    I think the characteristic that sets Patriot above S-400 at least in my mind is the fact that Patriot systems can receive targets from British, French, Canadian, German and other allies. Not only can they operate autonomously, but they can also receive targets from SHORAD units who visually ID targets flying below radar and/or flying a flight profile that evades look-down systems. A Hind hovering in a forest canopy for example. Ground clutter confuses radar systems and therefore, THAAD, HIMAAD, Patriot, Avenger, M6 Linebackers (Retired) can all receive targets from any system within the ADA network including freindly forces. This give us the ability to put up massive fires against an unknown aircraft that at least one system in the network has designated as hostile.
    Eastern Bloc systems do not have this ability. They only receive targets within their own network. And as far I know, their fire units cannot communicate with other countries nor can their ground units pass target information to their naval and air units. That's what makes the US a more potent Air Defender. Not any particular missile. Patriot was designed to defeat fast moving Soviet Bombers and strike air craft. Further developments allow it to engage BM. For what it has become, it is a fine system. S-400 is a potent system indeed. Probably in the top 3 on the planet. However, it relies on a dedicated system to be successful. It cannot lose it's radar, or Fire control system and switch it's launcher to another system like Patriot and THAAD can. Testing our TADL-B linkage with Patriot and Stinger systems allow our fire teams to simply press "Slew-to-cue" and engage what Navy radar is tracking and has IFF'd as unknown. No other country has this capability.
    That what makes this discussion meaningless. Two totally different systems with totally different capabilities and support systems. I spent over 22 years testing Hawk, Hercules, Patriot, Redeye, Stinger, Avenger, Linebacker and ADATS systems. The only American system I would consider equal in mission to a Soviet system is the shoulder fired Redeye to the SA-7. Nothing else has a direct comparison. I'm biased in American and Western systems no doubt. But i'm not stupid. Respect is given where respect is earned. And Soviet style equipment come with an element of fear. Plain and simple, the shit works. And you would be a fool to underestimate it.

    • @Nelsonwmj

      THAAD is Patriot on steroids pretty much. Patriot still keeps a conventional warhead, THAAD relies purely on kinetic collision to kill an incoming ballistic missile.

      @John-fe1cd Před 5 lety

      But whats the difference for anti-aircraft/BM? Is there a different design consideration in the missile or radar?

    • @Nelsonwmj
      @Nelsonwmj Před 5 lety +3

      When you're going after aircraft the main guidance tracking input the missile relies on is tracking the heat coming from the aircraft engines, as well as the radar cross-section. When you are firing against a missile however, you can't prox-kill a missile from behind by locking onto its heat signature in conjunction with its radar cross-section; you need to intercept it head on, which means radar-locking onto the target profile is far more important than simply tracking heat output from the missile exhaust. Since a missile is a lot smaller than a plane in terms of radar cross-section and is moving a lot faster, the missile system has to be calibrated with far tighter margins of error and guidance to score a kill against a missile than against a plane.
      This means more powerful radars that can be guided with pinpoint accuracy to direct the intercepting missile on target, as well as missiles with higher speeds, maneuverability to get into position ahead of the target ballistic missile, the ability to distinguish radar decoys potentially thrown out by the incoming ballistic missile, and finally in some cases even a larger fuel capacity for the interceptor potentially if you wish to extend the interception envelope further to give yourself more leeway to get on target first time.

    • @psuedozardozz
      @psuedozardozz Před 5 lety +1

      @@John-fe1cd ballistic missiles travel at hypersonic speeds, using an angle that's close to straight down. Plane's fly in a roughly level trajectory at supersonic speeds or below and can maneuver. The calculations that have to be done are somewhat different, and systems specializing in one type of target aren't usually good at hitting the other type. Remember that s400 type systems carry multiple types of missiles, while US systems are usually stuck with 1 missile type.

    • @eliadbu
