In the past the focus was on chemical based lasers, however they where very dangerous to operate, and the fuel hazardous. The goal than became for energy based laser, which seemed possible with the near infinite energy from nuclear reactors on some ships. However energy based laser are not as powerful as older chemical lasers, they use a lot of energy in bursts, and the atmosphere really messes with lasers even under mostly ideal conditions. This doesn't take into account any anti-laser defense systems (like basic reflective coatings) which have been shown to reduce heat generation on target by 80%+. Its just not very practical, even with modern technology not designed to combat it the power needed isn't close, and if/when it becomes practical there will just be a large increase in reflective coats to counter it.

The latest AMRAAM AIM-260 will fill this gap. For now they rely on British and French allies who use the excellent Fox 3 Meteor on the Eurofighter and Rafale. Now ranges are very virtuel, the effective range for a 200 Km Meteor is actually around 70 Km. The main asset is not range per se but effective range and most of all the capacity to change its speed thanks to variable ramjet. They need missiles that do not only rely on accumulated energy and are very maneuverable during the final phase.
