  • No sponsor, times are hard. But With Russia losing several aircraft in Ukraine lately, it's made me wonder why they don't use their Su-57 stealth aircraft? After all, that's what stealth is for, to avoid radar and being shot down! So we explore why they're not around, how many Russia even has, what they'd even be able to achieve, and all with the latest satellite imagery

More hollow bragging. It is easily disproven by the fact that they are not dominating the sky over Ukraine. Russia is always saying the BS that you're repeating. And if the Armata was the wonder tank you claim, again why are they not using them? Because if they did the world would see this is all more false boasts. In 2010, India had plans to purchase 216 SU-57s. They even paid 295 million USD as initial engineering costs. The program required India to invest a further 5 billion USD down the line as development costs, with Russia spending an equal amount. However when the first prototype was out, the Russians denied access to the aircraft. The Indian Air Force was not convinced of the effectiveness of the stealth fighter. They finally abandoned the program & left the Russians in limbo.

Yes the indians initially INVESTED in the SU57 project before it was even in the prototype stage, but the reason why the Indians pulled out their investment was twofold: 1. They did not want to wait for way over a decade for initial delivieries to start (though with Indian money the project would had gone a bit faster), but the MAIN reason was: 2. The Russians did not want to build a factory that would produce these planes in India itself or even produce the spare parts locally.

Despite having an order for "75" Su-57s, and the Russian ministry/Sukhoi constantly claiming they'll be delivering 2 dozen "soon" for the last like 8 years, the fact is they're highly dependent on foreign components. Allegedly they've delivered all of 4 new Su57s this december (the total for the ENTIRE year), I really wouldn't be surprised if they just took 4 of the test aircraft, polished them up a bit, and slapped new numbers on them.
Russia has literally been caught bolstering it's number of vehicles by changing numbers before.
The rule of thumb when it comes to counting Russian assets is "If they say they have 30, or 200, or 1000 of them, but you only see 8, it's because they only have 8". They famously LOVE showing off their number of assets, be it tanks, ICBM launchers, aircraft etc. So the only reason to have so few in a picture, is because they don't have that many.

The stupid thing is that some of their weapon systems are actually very capable, but those aren't the things being hyped and shown off to the world at every opportunity. A good example is the R-29RMU2 submarine-launched ballistic missile which is reliable, has been in service over a decade now, has a very long range and makes use of some seriously impressive technology and engineering in its engines. It's a really good missile that showcases what Russian engineers can do with the right resources but you never hear about it and it's virtually unknown in the West outside of military circles and hardcore rocket nerds.
Why doesn't Russia shout about R-29RMU2 when it compares favourably with the latest Western missiles? - Because it can't sell them since they're strategic nuclear delivery systems.

Also, being able to detect a stealth aircraft does not mean you can target said aircraft. Stealth aircraft can be detected with low frequency(longer slower wavelength) radars but that return isn't good enough for targeting. The high frequency (shorter faster wavelengths) radar used for targeting can't "see" stealth aircraft.
That's why countries like China and Russia say "they can detect the f-35" or f-22. They can but they can not target them. But they like to play on people ignorance about how stealth aircraft and radars work. They play the same game for hypersonic missiles too.

"That's why countries like China and Russia say "they can detect the f-35" or f-22. They can but they can not target them."
Russia can do both. China can do both, but at shorter range.
Some other nations are also capable of this, but Russia is current leader in antistealth tech. By a big margin. China is probably 2nd in line.
And because USA specifically disallowed such research up until 10-15 years ago, USA and most of Nato are FAAAR behind.
"The high frequency (shorter faster wavelengths) radar used for targeting can't "see" stealth aircraft. "
That's a misconception and wrong. The RANGE they can be seen is REDUCED, not made impossible.
And there's a number of tricks for improving both range and chance to detect.
"They play the same game for hypersonic missiles too."

It's pretty obvious why the Russians aren't using them. The final engines, which produce more power and are more stealthy, haven't even reached production yet. Currently only low numbers of aircraft are being produced and they will almost exclusively be used for training and testing. It's still quite possible that they don't even go ahead with mass production. That's actually what happened to the Armata tank. They did some field tests, looked at what they had learned in Ukraine, sent it back to the drawing board for a redesign and in the meantime the Armata production line has been shifted to other vehicles.
Trustworthy information regarding how stealthy the Su-57 really is doesn't exist in public. The only thing we can 100% safely assume is that the materials are not as good as the western ones, but that doesn't actually affect low frequency radar all that much so it's more an issue regarding targeting radars and active seekers. So we can't really say how far away we will be able to spot it, only that it's somewhere between a gen 4-4.5 aircraft and a western gen 5 and that once we do it will be easier to lock on to. Ukraine has one of the most densely defended airspaces on the planet and when it comes to SEAD, if that is their main goal, then it would probably be a lot more resource efficient for Russia to just produce more long range anti-radiation missiles.
It's important to remember that Russian doctrine and western doctrine are different. If we evaluate their equipment based on our own usage methodology we are bound to misjudge them.

Russian doctrine in Syria is to have air supremacy within it's area or denial, so there is an overlap with western doctrine, yet they don't have air supremacy over Ukraine territory. Not using a so-called stealth aircraft to achieve this alludes to the Russians either not having faith in their aircraft' abilities or they don't have many/any to spare....their pilot numbers may also be a factor.

    • @TheRealBillBob
      @TheRealBillBob Před 5 měsíci +8

Exactly and first of all they don't need Su-57's to deal with Ukraine. Secondly, Russia has only just now managed to get the right engines for them so they can fly at supercruise. As you know, you can't be a stealth jet without supercruise.

this is nonsense. the us navy believes the opposite. they don't think they can detect the SU-57 with a F-35 (latest gen AESA) until they get within 40-50 miles of them. the vast majority of stealth is just geometry. and if they ever make the IR sensors a little stealthy with a better housing look out. you can see 4th gen fighters from hundreds of miles away with very old school radar ram or no ram.
now the navy rekons they can get within 15-20 miles before the f-35 can be resolved but there's nothing that can take out the su-57 but the fth gen American fighters. everything else in the world loses 1000 to zero. and since Russia doesn't go pushing its ideology all over the world and attacking everyone who doesn't fall in line with liberal-capitalism it's good enough for defense when they have ground radar to help them. f-35 is so small large wave radar can pick it up and vector in assets.

real RCS F22 in front projection 0.2-0.3 side projection 0.5, Su-57 approximately the same values from the front.
To protect against meter waves, you need a stealth coating thickness of at least 0.5 meters. You probably need at least half a decimeter from decimeter waves. As you know, F22 and F35 do not have a large thickness of stealth coating. The only US stealth aircraft was the F117 and it was useless and therefore discontinued (as was the F22).

something to keep in mind is that by russia's own published numbers the SU57 has an RCS comparable to an F/A18E/F super hornet. it's an improvement over a flanker but even by the standards of 20 years ago it's not particularly stealthy and isn't really trying to be despite how the ru MOD markets it.

    • @user-dp4ok9ox5w
      @user-dp4ok9ox5w Před 5 měsíci +6

Nobody has published ther RCS "numbers": First of all RCS is not a number, but a spectrum that changes with the attitude of the plane. Secondly RCS is top secret for all planes, even non-stealth oenes. Let alone most modern stealth planes. So ALL the talk about RCS this and that is pure speculation. The ONLY thing that can be said for certain is that USAF uses much more expensive RAM coating in the F35 (and to extent in F22), but that RAM coating has also drawbacks like being very averse to rain and does not work as well against large waveband radars.

Su-57 may have a frontal radar cross-section against airborne radars similar to a B-2 stealth bomber or 4th gen Gripen C jet fighter in a clean configuration (0,1m2) but Su-57 will have a much lower side profile than Gripen and its detectability would be further lowered one way or another due to a rather comprehensive jamming suite utilizing multiple radar arrays. In fact, as far as I know, no Western fighter is comparable in this regard, not even dedicated US "jamming" planes like Growler, not to mention that just flying low will make you invisible to the ground radars of most nations unless you got some early warning radar in high altitude, and even airborne radar has reduced detection range against low flying jets due to ground clutter.
So, all this trashing troll talk about the incompetence of the Russian aerospace industry is rather pointless. In all seriousness, the Su-57 can have the potential to be superior to the F-35 or even F/A-22 in direct AA combat due to its kinematic performance with new engines, multispectral sensors, and active radar/IR missile jamming because producing 5th gen air superiority jet fighter not capable doing so 20 years after the introduction of 5th gen jets of opposition would make little sense, especially when Mig 1.42/1.44 5th gen project was canceled as likely not good enough but due to lack of new missiles, questionable training, and overall lack of resources to get the most from their Russian tech, you can see how Su-57 can end when you look how Mig-29 performed with the underfunded armies of Middle East using export models with short-range missiles, and how Mig-29 performed in Ukraine, where it's flying to this day despite Russians operate arguably superior jets. These are among the reasons why Russia will not be in a hurry to send their newest tech into harm's way, not like there is a need for that against what Ukraine has...

The Su-57 isn't stealth by the standards set by the likes of the F-22 and F-35. At best it's considered "low observable" tech.
Aside from the general shape of the airframe, there's an issue with the passive IR detection gear on the Su-57 in that it's only stealthy/low observable when it's inactive. When the sensor is inactive, it rolls over and the exposed part has RAM applied. Once it's active, and the sensor is facing out and can detect IR radiation, it becomes a large reflective surface to targeting radar and massively increases the cross section to opposing radar.
The F35 adopted a similar passive IR detection system, but it's much superior in that it's stealthy when active, and unlike the system on the older MiGs and Sukhois, it provides a 360 degree spherical coverage zone, where the Russians only face forward.
And, yeah, the Russians don't even have a full squadron worth of Su-57s, either production models or prototypes that might be pressed into service.

@@chilbiyito Stealth aircraft make use of low probability of intercept (LPI) radar technologies that make their radar signals very hard to detect and jam because they constantly change frequency, use multiple frequencies at once and employ various other techniques that make radar emissions seem like background noise. Because of this they can operate in places where using older types of radar would light them up like a Christmas tree and negate the advantage of having stealth, and it lets them operate in environments where there's heavy electronic jamming.
Capturing a radar can reveal exactly how it hides its signals and defends against jamming so you can figure out how to detect and jam it. It can also give useful clues about other radars from the same product family or manufacturer. Radar tech is one of the most closely guarded secrets in modern military aircraft and maintaining that secrecy can be the difference between totally dominating the enemy's airspace and being unable to fly anywhere near it in case your planes get shot down.

this video, like so many, think stealth is a material - thats only about 40% of what stealth is - the biggest diffeence between the F35 and F22 is what is emitted from the flying a/c (what its systems emit in the form of electro-magnetic emissions - radar, internal systems, comms, etc) - the F22 is designed to play on its own, its nickname is the 'little awacs', as it needs little help externally - the F22 uses a passive RWR to detect, it uses something akin to multiple super-computers onboard to fuse intel into usable facts - its RWR sees others radar, comms output and other noisey internal systems to detect another
but part of this stealth feature on the F22 is its mission systems computers, utilising all its fused intel into a means to help it get closer - if you can see a ground radar and identify what it is, then using detected frequencies (modes of use) you can calculate your RCS return to that radar and get much closer - the F22 uses something akin to CLOAR (Common Low Observable Auto Router) to calulate a stealthy approach onto a target or 'thread the needle' through a nest of ground / airbourne threats - this feature alone is probably worth 40% to stealth with the remaining percentage being keeping emission from onboard system to min - all these factors also take into account manourvers from your a/c, where the mission computer gives the pilot options - early prototypes of this mission computer came from the Pilots Associate Programme from R&D done back in the 80/90'see - the UK had its MMA programme
this is probably what the russian's are missing - this mission system capability for on-mission stealth - modern NATO computing whilst hidden in securey, probably utilises modern GPU computing (you can buy versions of todays NVidia GPU's for airborne military use), where a nest of these processing elements could run 10's of thousands of RCS predictions against a emittor to calculate a possible route to get closer
the US flys at 5k alt, whilst the Uk plays at around 50m+ (or lower) using terrain to mask its approach - the US has numbers, whilst the UK has far less numbers - Storm-Shadow shows this effect, as it is designed to fly very low using terrain masking to hide its flight, the US launches high
even UK and US cruise missiles come with mission systems to calculate mission profiles, were these need to be done before the weapon can even be used
whilst the SU-57 may have stealth material in its makeup, we do not know if it has an effective on-board mission system to utilise these capabilities - i think NOT - why do both the UK and US train so hard and so constantly - we just do not see this from the Russian pilots - and why are there so few SU57's - i suspect an indication came from India when it pulled out of the SU57 programme quoting tech exchange issues and not coming close to what was advertised by russia
Russian does not produce its own computing tech for adv computing - its rumoured to be around 80nm, whilst just commericial computing in the WEST is around 4nm from home grown industrys, so god knows what military levels are - both the UK and US use federated computing (distributed computing) around the a/c to do adv computing, then factoring in new AI computing tech into the mix on these computing systems
Russia may have AI computing tech understanding, just not as much hardware to implement it on for flight system given sanctions - this was one of the best decisions that the US / UK / EU made in limiting such adv computing maufacture to be shared outside of their regions - Russia can buy, could have bought once such computing boards, just not in any great numbers anymore
