North Korea's most powerful woman | DW Documentary

- She's probably the most powerful woman in North Korea: Kim Yo Jong, the dictator’s younger sister. She’s viewed as an emotionless and shrewd strategist for her brother, the North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un. But just who is the "Red Princess"?
Kim Jong Un’s rise began in 2011 when their father, the North Korean leader Kim Jong Il died at the age of 69. His death triggered emotional scenes including, at the funeral, that of a weeping woman who captured the attention of her country and the entire world: Kim Yo Jong.
This was Kim Yo Jong’s first official appearance alongside her brother Kim Jong Un, the new Supreme Leader of North Korea. Within a decade, Kim Yo Jong became the second highest ranking person in the Pyongyang regime and thereby her brother’s potential successor.
Kim Yo Jong holds a multifaceted political role: on the one hand, she knows where and when to deploy her charm -- such as on a visit to South Korea in 2018. But she also issues warnings against the "imperialists” of Seoul and Washington. The documentary examines the personality and the career of the "Red Princess”. It also takes a current look behind the scenes of this totalitarian regime. The nuclear power is mired in a crisis that originated at the outset of the Cold War.

Years ago i saw an interview with another reporter who was in North Korea when the leader died in 2011. She was supposed to be at the procession but thankfully "warned" to be sick that day. Why? She was informed that cameras would be recording the crowd for signs of disrespect to the dear leader. In other words, she better be able to cry hysterically for hours or face "corrective actions"!! She later reported after LEAVING north Korea that hundreds of mourners "disappeared" for "insincere grief"!! Imagine being killed cause you couldn't cry for hours on demand.

Her being a tiny lady makes her more terrifying to me. You look at her and you’re disarmed. If you didn’t know better, you’d think she was a strict parent at best. But in reality, she holds a terrifying amount of power. She can’t take you physically, but she doesn’t have to. All she has to do is raise an eyebrow, look at a guard, say a word, and you are DEAD.
I also find it fascinating that a country so patriarchal is perfectly fine with her. Obviously, anyone who speaks against her is dead, but I still find it incredible that her brother is confident in her to the point that she can stand in for him at events.
That man and his sister will never change don't fool yourself
Her smile is a disguise for how uncomfortable she is
When I see her, my blood grows cold. There is nothing about her that exudes compassion. I think she will be even more of a ruthless leader than her brother.

Thanks for the upload of this doc. Very informative & interesting!
You can tell by her mannerisms that she is cold, calculating, & extremely intelligent. Probably the most intelligent in the family. Sitting behind the scenes & soaking all the political & economical knowledge. Waiting for her moment to take over the regime. We thought her brother or predecessors were heartless. This woman gives me chills. Near the end of this documentary they described her as timid. There’s nothing that strikes me as timid about her. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s more maniacal & methodical. I already assume she’s the brains behind everything that has happened since her brother took office. If this woman.. wait.. when this woman takes office the world better be prepared because she doesn’t strike me as “nice” as her brother, which says a lot.
Lastly with all that said she is a very interesting person where you want to know more but know we probably will only know what SHE wants us to know. I have respect for her in that regard. She doesn’t show her hands to anybody. Not even her family.

She's obviously highly intelligent. She is competent enough to rise in power beside her brother, but submissive enough to give him a lot of deference to show that he's the boss and that she would never try to take that from him. It's a careful line, but she walks it well. When you look at what happened to their uncle, the stakes are very high.
She is every bit a person who is fully in control, but the reason she has so much trust and power is because she presents herself as someone who has no designs on her brother.

Everyone in the comment section villainizing her aren't thinking about what life she was born into and what is expected of her. I'd assume she's expected to be soft in the eyes of the public and in a room full of men, but HARD towards everyone else. Her eyes say she has seen and done some things no one ever should have to witness or be forced to do. I don't think she's evil per say but just born in that position and having to navigate the politics there to survive.
Kim Jong-Un's daughter will be the next ruler.
I remember one North Korean official once said about nuclear weapons something like "you invaded Iraq not because they had weapons of mass destruction, but because they actually didn't and that is why you're never gonna invade Iran and you're never gonna invade us."
The west really loves to twist the minds of people ... North Korea Stands right
Both fortunately and unfortunately they don't have much oil deposits. Which was most likely one of main reasons for Iraq.
Iran does not have nuclear weapons

Those eyes and countenance of Kim Yo Jong are exactly how some anime MCs are written. The "Red Princess" is a very apt term.
She's probably a very competent leader. She's still alive and ruling along with her brother.

the worlds fault.
I get the impression that she is even more calculating and ruthless than her brother. And that she misses nothing. One wrong move and she will end it.
24:00 her “smile” and look are a facade for how terrified and insecure she is. Like that one goofy person who smiles inappropriately when they’re uncomfortable
She knows she could have been arrested at any moment
They are both inspiring the world for the leadership, and developing country
The way she is extremely careful about her conduct and presence reeks training of the highest level. She knows when to speak, what to speak, how to express and when to shut up. These are the hallmark features of an extremely successful leader. And the way she is learning and climbing up the ladder of political and economic power in DPRK, it won't be an exaggeration to believe that Kim Yo-Jong is on her way to become the most powerful woman in the world.
😂😂

Fascinating woman. It's interesting to me that she's so powerful, but every time I've seen her in newsclips she's always acting like a mere secretary -- pointing people to the right places to stand or sit, personally taking hold of documents that are exchanged, doing other menial tasks
Simply playing her role until it’s time to ‘step into’ power - intelligent and calculating woman 💯
She acts like a servant now, so if she becomes the regent for her niece she can say she is still just a servant.

Hard to judge body language of another culture. Equally hard what to know of her position in the most paranoid and secretive country imaginable.
But as a member of the Kim dynasty, the sky's the limit for her and maybe her niece.
I'm still annoyed the Kim dynasty claims that they are in any way socialists-they're a bizarre manifestation of absolute monarchy and ultra-extreme Korean nationalism.

I am a citizen of South Korea and I really appreciate your efforts to deal with the problems prevailing between South and North Korea through her life and roles in North Korea. Your documentary are dealing with the facts that many South Koreans didn't know at the time of her visiting South Korea.
Citizen of fake Korea you mean
She's trouble. It's all over her face.
You mean a propaganda channel.
Stop being a puppet of America 😂
@@vervetech9395 You realize the only reason why America is occupying South Korea is because they're neighbors with the North... You don't think much, do you? Maybe go read a book about the Cold War...
You can see in her eyes that she'll make her brother or father look like childs play once she takes over. She clearly doesn't mess around. D:
If I recall, the Russian ambassador said Kim Jong Il had told him Kim Yo Jong was his favorite, and the one he said would be best suited as successor, lamenting that she wasn't a viable option as her gender probably wouldn't allow her to be accepted. Was an interesting read. If that's true, she's both her father and her brother's favorite...
I certainly hope so, KJU is like a broken record, they need change.😊
She has a very cold stare and demeanor. She looks more evil than her brother
Kim Yo-jong is my kind of lady ♥😍😘 I would date her in a nano-second.

They cried their eyes out when they heard the "great leader" made ten thousand decisions over Covid-19. OMG, everyone in that conference hall can win a Oscar.
Fascinating documentary! It provides deep insights into the life of one of North Korea’s most influential figures. Really well done!
Nothing scares me better than a powerful, ruthless yet charming woman.
So... Why is everybody talking about her as if she were some type of "higher" being? "I can see how she scans the room, impressive," "she's so smart, clearly she commands North Korea." It doesn't seem like that to me at all. She actually really does look like a scared person trying to impersonate someone confident. She acts so secretive, almost robot-like, because she is terrified of making a mistake. Don't romanticize them, she's a trained official under strict control.
"A trained official" is a massive understatement. No one else has more power than her in NK (except her brother). Powerful figures are also afraid of making mistakes, but she's truly confident, being in charge of NK's foreign relationships for years.
You are right, people like to romanticize
They are both scared because they know if they lose power they will be killed by their own people. That’s what happened to the the Romanian dictator, he was dragged on the street and killed by his own people.
😅
✍️
She would act as guardian to his daughter.
some people are down so bad they think they can fix her
In all honesty, I think she is the brains behind her brothers leadership. Many women have throughout time. I’m sure she provides great information and guidance behind the scenes. You can also tell she is the wrong one to mess with.
simply no. Kim Jong Un is the brains. He is literally playing around and playing his part well. Kim Jong Un is actually a really chill dude and down to Earth person. He is just playing his part. If he wasn't a dictator, he would just be enjoying life with the celebrities.
@@BestMods168idk man, we don't really know what happens there. All we know is that NK hates America and SK. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. Personally I believe his sister is poisoning him. Many women throughout history have gained power this way. Many Queens have done it. Even if the rule is that they lose power, they find a way around it. Typically by killing the child of the King. I don't see this as any different.
@@BestMods168 Kim Jong Un is a chill person? Girl... No, he isn't. He's a dictator. Not being chill is kind of their thing.
