I like your videos but the title to this one is a bit misleading and suggests that US tank stocks are depleting due to a decline in overall US capabilities, which I'm sure isn't the case.
I know, titles can be tricky things, but that was my immediate impression of this title, at least.

Could the decrease in tank stocks be due to prepositioning more units in Europe, implying the tanks are on the way to bases there?
It could be that the US believes war with Russia and or China is a possibility and is preparing to either fight or deter it.
The US recently sent around 30 tanks to Germany for training purposes (different tanks from the ones intended for Ukraine).
The prepositioned vehicles have been there for years.
In 1990 our officers from Ft Polk were taken to France to inspect the 5thID prepositioned equipment.
The tank reduction is probably due to additional sales other than Ukraine.
Yes, as well as older Abrams configurations being reoutfitted and upgraded with newer ones, which takes months to accomplish.
Tanks are no longer what they were in the two world wars, where they were essentially just cars with heavy armor and a big gun, but are now very sophisticated and complex platforms. Platforms that take lots of time, and money.
I'd expect new positional stocks to have been going to asia over europe.
Europe isn't in any danger, what is russia gonna do?
They won't make it 100km into poland before the russian army seizes to exist by just european airforces and millitaries.

Russia has a LOT of tank hulls, the US has a lot of complete tanks. The US has a geographic advantage, when it stores tanks, it meticulously seals them and stores them in the desert. In Russia, they are left out in wet, cold conditions. Then factor in the grift of the Russian Army, all the parts that have been thieved. They went to T-62s very early in the war when on paper, they had thousands of T-72s in storage
You have ignored ALOT of detail s and mentioned some flat out lies. The T62s are only for the Donbas Militias. And no, the tanks stored haven’t gotten all their pieces stolen.
Russian tanks also are surprisingly able to withstand the cold harsh Siberian conditions very well. They are barely rusted at all.
and still united states only send 31 tanks ( will send ) and ofcourse america pays the most military support but the eu pays even more only its mmostly humanitarian or cash for social security in ukraine so end of the day we pay in europe as much as united states but why the us isnt sending tanks long range rockets and fighter jets i dont understand and its not good. my point we can't rule out russia because they are going for it for 100 percent while nato is doing like 5 percent just to keep it going

@@tetraxis3011 I do agree that storing in Siberia makes sense, but the fact that it's T62s that are put into service instead of T72s is indicating that there aren't any viable T72s anymore and even T54 and T55 tanks are put into service so this tells me that the amount of usable tanks that Russia has is coming to an end.
There are probably a few usable T72s still around, but not enough to make any difference.

Correction: The US is still actively building new Abrams tanks, the Lima Army Tank Plant in Lima, Ohio- is currently running minimum production of 11 new Abrams tanks per month. This is on top of the upgrade and maintenance programs that already happen there.

@@jgw9990 The navy did with a number of old WW2 ships. But unlike tanks, modifying ships can be as if not more expensive than a new ship. So it depends a lot more on the individual ships and how much of an upgrade it can fit.
7 years ago Lima was down to a skeleton workforce of something like 300 people. 5 years ago it was 600. Given this fact, i very much doubt it can handle a brand new tank production of even 1 tank a month(the rate at which Ukraine produced its own brad new tanks). 11 tanks sounds more like what Russians are doing with the T-72B3.
Great part of "missing" 300 tanks is that at least 116 of them are going to Poland on top of 250 more "new" tanks. That may be the case. It quite cover the missing tanks. I can be ofcourse totally wrong, but as you said, US takes stored tanks and refurbishes and upgrades them, resets their milleage and sell to costumers. Poland has signed a contract of total of 366 M1s. 116 M1A1FEP (if i recall correctly) and 250 M1A2 SEPv3
if rumors are going to be believed the tanks that are going to be sent to ukraine will be some / all of the 50 M1A1 SA with tungsten inserts currently in service with Australia army. Australia has a SEPv3's on order, there will be a joint announcement last week of may according to some media sources

@@bornonthebattlefront4883 like i said i could be totally wrong. I don't know how GDLS builds new tanks, if they indeed have some spare hulls or od they take those tanks from storage. However quite a number of clients ordered M1s recently and i doubt GDLS have this many spare hulls.
I also wonder how many of the "missing" tanks are just aging out and are getting stripped down for usable spare parts.
Yeah, that engine or transmission isn't as good as new built or old unused stock, but probably better than a part that's been burned out.

Nations send old available tanks to Ukraine with the promise of Abrams replacements down the line for their trouble. God deal for everyone.
The "Old" tanks being sent are first sent to the tank plant at Lima, OH. They are stripped down and brought up to the mose advanced standard. When they leave they are in effect new build tanks.
Not sending but selling. Poland bought 250 new SEPv3 tanks and 116 older M1A1 FEP Abrams. There are plans to upgrade these 116 M1A1 to SEPv3 standard.

The US doesn't have new build tanks, all hulls are from ppre 1992. BUT, what Lima does is refurbish old hulls to modern standards, rips out the DU and sells to allies or keeps armor package and gives to US to replace older models The US built so many M1 Abrams (120 a month!) that it doesn't need new tanks, just to keep them upgraded
Another way to look at this is to ask how many tanks does the US need? Since Ukraine has the ability to strike a significant blow to the only country the US would engage in a tank battle requiring thousands of tanks, I would say that they can afford to supply far more than the promised 34 tanks they have earmarked for a fall delivery. Considering the thousands that are in storage and waiting to be converted, I would say that we can afford to get tanks to Ukraine immediately, so long as Ukraine has been trained with the vehicles and have the ability to supply and maintain them.
From a higher comment, someone pointed out that Abrams are logistical monsters to keep up to their optimal performance.
They're very maintenance heavy, they need to be modified for the Ukrainian environment, they need to take out some technology that they don't want the Russians possibly getting their hands on, and though it can run on many types of fuel; a special jet/diesel blend is most optimal for peak performance. Not to mention they're gas guzzlers.
There's no good answer for how many tanks the US needs as we don't know how many the US would lose in a contingency in the Korean Peninsula, or resupply for Taiwan, or just a general war with China in Asia, which while it would be mostly a Naval and Air war would probably still require a sizeable commitment of ground troops with their tanks.
Generally a stockpile is supposed to last however long you think it'll take war production to catch up with battlefield losses. The US might only lose half as many tanks in a year as Russia did in Ukraine, but that would still stretch the current stockpile uncomfortably thin for the Pentagon planners.

@@mill2712 True, then we should be having a conversation in congress of why we are supporting these complex vehicles that are so difficult to supply and maintain that our allies can't or don't want to use them.
@@mill2712 Those Abrams are simply outdated, not in terms of weaponry but more so in terms of survivability AND fuel consumption. I highly doubt we will see Abrams used really successfully in Ukraine either way. Tanks also have a very strange position in modern war, they are needed for occupation but are very much a death trap. And well... if they take until the end of the year to arrive there they are probably also too late. If anything this war showed us, a massive tank force is not automatically a win anymore. It's all about drones, missiles and air force. The Abrams will fail the same way the russian tanks failed, if not even more miserably.

The US owns thousands of M1 tanks in excess of requirements.
And the US tank plant continues to produce new M1 tanks.
The Lima OH tank plant must be kept open and staffed because it would take years to put the pieces and staff back together.
So we build new M1 and variants for customer requirements.

ultimately, sending our tanks to our allies serves a deterrent purpose - here in the americas they really aren't doing much, and the future conflicts the US needs to prepare for are going to be air and sea... our allies will hold the ground while we back them up
so the best home for our tanks is actually not at home at all ; they aren't deterring much in this hemisphere ... but sending them to poland or HIMARS to japan or even subs for australia? that serves a security purpose, that adds to deterrence

160 of the tanks hull’s were purchased by Australia, for 120 SEV.3 conversion, 40 for future if required. They supposedly to be delivered in 2024.

The US has over 2000 M1 tanks in storage. They are all upgradeable to the latest M1A2 Sep 3 variant. Also, keep in mind the Russian tanks that are left over in storage are mostly inoperable. We actually store our armor properly. Most of the Russian tanks are also older T55, T62 and early T72's. The reason why the numbers are changing is because a lot of the armor is being upgraded to M1A2 Sep 3 variant.
We actually have nearly 3, 500 in storage excluding the handful sent to Ukraine.

Those sites during my time at the Fulda gap they were called POMCUS. Lost track of what was going on with those sites after the Cold War ended and the US drew down to a fraction of it size in Germany.
Every REFORGER the deployed units would collect weapons and equipment from POMCUS to use for the annual nato training.
the only brigade size (iirc) depot still in use is Mannheim. Ben Hodges made sure that one stayed active and stocked after the 2014 invasion (again, iirc).
I work at a X US Port that moves Army Tanks out of the country I can confirm there's about 400 tanks both m1s and Bradley's sitting there as we speak all functional heading overseas.
We have been moving these for months now I've seen nearly 800 in the last 6 months.
I'd bet a dollar they are part of the "military reorganization" going on within NATO just in case Putin goes full Austrian painter mode.

My understanding is that the U.S. does not make a single NEW tank. Even for foreign sales, all new Abrams that roll out are just updated and refurbished models. So I think the drop in storage numbers is the sales we've been making to other countries like Poland.
I heard a while ago that the usa was still building abrams and putting them straight to storage because just building the minimum every year would be cheaper then losing the capability and logistics and having to rebuild that from scratch again when a new model is eventually gonna replace abrams.
It probably could be the continual updating, but i really think they where talking about brand new ones.

The thing about that is that while there are new tanks being built, they aren't built entirely new, but use the hulls from stores older tanks. If you look at the orders from other nations for Abrams tanks it is entirely reasonable for a lot of the change in stores tanks to be entirely for that.
Yeah they kept the plant open by "building" new ones. Really they are just rebuilding old ones. I actually agree with the logic of keeping the plant open because I'm sure it means we could build brand tanks if needed. But for now it's cheaper and easier to simply draw old tanks from storage and remake them.
Yep, all “new” tanks are refits. But they’re just as good as actual new tanks. For the most part they really ARE new, like y’all say, they strip it down to the chassis. (Torsion bar suspension doesn’t wear out.)

From my understanding is there are over a total of 5,000 tanks. Now 2,000 are in storage the others are at bases FOBs, and other such places around the world. American tanks are regularly updated. If you know the motor heads in the repair areas they do earn there money when spending it on Repair Upgrades and to be maintained on a yearly basis. Just from what my buddies tell me from there Mech time.

Great video! I have to say though America has modern tanks. You don’t see M60s or M48s as you see T62s T64s. The marines have go rid of their tanks so I’m guessing they went to storage? I know they were m1a1’s but like you said could be upgraded. Hope you are ok with your personal stuff. We love the videos but take all the time you need man!
The Marines’ M1A1s were sent to Poland. Poles are using them for training & familiarization until they get their M1A2SEPv3’s.
Yeah they will not have M60s and M48s but some of the older Abrams in storage like the M1s are literally 40 years old. Having said that the most modern ABRAMS like the M1A2 SEP versions seem pretty advance.
@@EatMyShortsAU they don’t send the tanks directly from storage, they refurbish them first. They have no choice but to modernize the tanks, the older versions are no longer supported. All their internals are out of date.

I don't always agree with you but great video. You should also keep in mine we build about 15 new Abrams from scratch a month with a surge potential of 30 a month. And that's without expanding the workforce to build even more. Max would probably be around 50 a month.
So you're saying both Plant One Hull and Turret fab lines (including Flame-cut) are still in operation in Lima?
Sierra Army Depot is down to about half the number of M1 Abrams that used to be there. Most of those tanks have only been there less than 5 years though, so I would imagine most of those are still in pretty decent shape. The tanks in Anniston would be in the process of being upgraded since that what they go there for. Those are only two places that you would find M1s. You left out Ft Knox, Ft Hood, Ft Irwin and Ft Polk.
He's not counting active service vehicles.
You'd end up with a decently-sized comment thread if you actually listed all the places Abrams are kept.

You also forget that the US was not the only power at play in either of those conflicts. The Aussies, Brits, Germans, etc. all participated in one or both of those conflicts.

I will say - the point of the reserves includes a potential war against Russia. So drawing down those reserves to send to Ukraine does not interfere with US war readiness. The US should send hundreds more Abrams and Bradley's and assist Ukraine to end the war this year or at the latest next summer. Holding onto pre-war reserves is just hoarding.
Do a video on how many OLD tanks Russia has(T-34s, T-44s, IS-3s, T-10s, and other misc old vehicles), both in deep storage and in good condition in museums.
there is not such tanks in russian inventory, last WW2ish tank seens in a combat zone in eastern europe was the IS-3(didn't even saw combat because of the lack of ammo) in the donbass conflict.

Some big differences between US and Russian tanks.
Abrams will always lose Turret Toss competition.
Abrams, if hit and knocked out of action has a far better chance of being repaired, whereas the T-tank has a higher chance of becoming scrap metal. The two wars in Iraq should tell you something.
Off hand, I would say that 1 battalion of M1's is probably worth 10 battalions of Russian tanks.
The coming battles with Western vs Russian tanks in the next few months should be enlightening.

Abrams got the best crew survivability, but even a Leo 2 has at least 15 shots safe in turret, and the rest in one box. Tank can be much easier repaired in case of battle damage.
Compared, a T-72 has 22 shots in its (exposed) carroussel. All of the other munition is stored in the living area, the commander literally sits on a explosive charge.
Doctrine for Soviets was, make the tank as small (and cheap) as possible, avoid getting hits, and bad repairability doesnt matter if you got enough tanks to overwhelm the enemy in the first place. A bit cynical and inhumane, but maybe alright for WW3. Poor design in any smaller conflict.

Was a 19k m1 abrams tanker, our tanks during 16-19 in 2nd bde 1st AD were old beat up m1a2 sep v2's that hadnt been reset in over a decade. They were always breaking down, and it was not unusual to have deadlined tanks not operating for over a year. I would say most of the stored m1a1/ m1p tanks at the Sierra army depot have been stripped of valuable parts, electronics, and are just empty tanks.
Same experience when I was in, they will get eaten up in Ukraine.
@@macarmalite8775 not necessarily, when they worked, had a good boresight, there a killing machine. But my brigades tanks were always falling apart. After a 2-3 week exercise, you could expect only half strength of tanks running.

The USA has between 5500 and 9000 Abrams from the sources I have found. The 5500 are newer models while the rest are Gulf War versions in storage, but complete.

IIRC when upgrading US actually pulls the old variant Abrams apart including cutting up the turret and the hull and only reusing some of the steel plates with newly manufactured ones being also added in essence creating a news tank.

It's also worth noting that US has not built new Abrams hulls in years, when there's a 'new production' it's built off an old hull restored to '0 operating hour condition'
