I used to be an engineer on the PATRIOT. This is a surprisingly thorough video, but a little out of date, which is understandable since you wouldn't have access to new specifications. I can't speak to specifics, but I can say the PAC-2 (which I've always preferred) and PAC-3 systems have been continuously updated to handle modern threats and to address weaknesses.

The main issue is less whether Patriot is better than Cold War era S-300s, but that Ukraine gets a system for which it has a reliable missile resupply source. When they run out of S-300 and Buk, there won't be any more coming.
The provision of a couple Patriot systems allows Ukraine to rebalance their GBAD, stretching their remaining stocks of Soviet missiles out more.
buys them time, but for what?
@@operator9858 for the Russian airforce to deplete the airframe lifespans, their current rate of sorties would see their airforce dwindle through the maintenance alone. Additionally on the ground Ukraine is far too slowly but still surely receiving modern equipment while Russia has been using older and older stuff from storage, even the top-tier tank regiments have been replacing their losses with less technological tanks. A T55 is a dangerous thing to have to fight, its still a tank, but on a modern battlefield its also relatively easy to destroy and training new crews isn’t that easy. Russia seems to already have run out of time to train crews properly as we’ve seen plenty of video’s of crews not handling their tank well.
The Russian morale, the experienced Russian crews and soldiers, the technology and maintenance level of the Russian equipment is going backwards the longer the war drags on. If Ukraine manages to survive go next year we might actually see a modern Abrahams tank vs a T-34 the way its going right now.
And that isn’t even mentioning that there are already people being trained for F-16’s and that countries like the Netherlands have already promised to send F-16’s should Ukraine have the ability to fly and maintain them (Poland has facilities and expertise across the border). The Ukrainian airforce might be using F-16’s against a Russian airforce that is running out of lifespan on their aircraft. The only thing Russia seems to have left most of the time is quantity. And even that is more limited than people think.
@@TheDemigans russia has a lot of guys running running around now and you dont need modern tanks for backfield duty or if you are going to use them as assault guns etc.
as to the planes russia is now bringing out su37's and tupelev bombers now supposedly and can fire from outside the range of ukrainian air defenses and even jens stoltenburg confirmed that the information in the leaks about air defense and artillery ammunition will only last another few weeks anyways.
and f16's? look at the trend we've taken with other kinds of equipment; a few old model varients that have warehoused or mothballed for decades gets brushed off and sent to the front with supply and maintenance problems the whole way and they are expected to do what a whole fleet of their old planes couldnt.
doesnt sound like a winning formula to me to start trying to send HUNDREDS of jets that it would take either this late in the game. heck the cost alone would be staggering in both men and material even if they won and they still would have the odds very much against them...
@@operator9858 assault guns is nice and a good way to use them, but they are also being used as replacements of tank groups. In fact I have yet to see a report that has them be used as assault guns rather than take the MBT role.
Russia is bringing out the SU-37, a technology testbed of which one was build?
We’ve seen the strikes beyond Ukraine’s range, we call these “strategic missiles” or “cruise missiles” for the most part. They’ve already been using them with very very limited success and their stockpiles are already low.
We’ve seen old equipment send in the case of low-level equipment. The Leopard 2’s for example are mostly the second most modern upgrade. The ones they get from storage are mostly getting modernized. Yes the going has been slow, but they have been getting there. Compare that to Russia replacing their modern tanks with increasingly old tanks… well it doesn’t look that good for Russia in the long run. The F16’s available also wouldn’t necessary be older tech since that isn’t even that available anymore. And even the older ones are well capable of flying in the current matchup against Russia, after all the old stuff Ukraine had left over is still able to do that job while outnumbered. Imagine what better modernized and maintained F-16’s would do.
Also its quite hypocritical to say that using mothballed gear is a bad thing when 90% of Russia’s currently used wargear is exactly that. Difference being that Ukraine is being supplied more modern versions as time goes on and Russia is taking increasingly older systems out of storage.
@@TheDemigans i guess we'll see soon enough but the russians keep insisting they are either modernizing or producing 1500 tanks a year and are already expanding that production after they announced they will simultaneously be trying to build a new permanent army corps for the north so it doesnt sound like they are struggling too bad.
i mean we know most of the casualties have been coming from artillery and now after stoltenburg confirmed that the information in the leaks about ammunition was accurate and we know that ukraine can only fire between 10-20% of the fire that russia can on any given day and is about to run out so it sounds like russia can kinda sit back and wait for ukraine to come to them and run themselves out of steam.

Perun and Preston Stewart are the two I _most_ trust when viewing content about the war. No matter what biases you claim about them they always provide sources. I really like the "RealLifeLore" channel. Very insightful commentary about wide reaching concepts.
I"ve always wondered how effective the Patriot system is.
Unfortunately, I'm still wondering after listening to this viideo.
I know despite talks of success during the Gulf wars that Patriot actually had a pretty poor rate of success but I'd guess that current versions are much better. I know the Russians seem to be very wary of the Patriot. I know the Iranian attack on Saudi oilfields a few years ago was highly respectful and avoided Patriot. I know that it's likely the technologies and expertise building THAAD likely have been used to improve Patriot.
But, I still don't know how well Patriot today performs.
Its effwctive as it will allow ukraine to move legacy soviet air defense system yhey are using in Kyiv to the frontlines. The Patriots IRIST and Nasams will cover the rear.
There were 2 friendly fire incidents that happened in Iraq after the 2003 invasion involving Patriot missiles. Apparently the pilots forgot to turn on their IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) transponder so the system saw them as a threat. Unfortunately both pilots were killed. Another fighter pilot was interviewed about what happened and he said the thing about encountering SAMs (Soviet manufacture) is that a pilot usually has an opportunity to do some high-G maneuvers and stand a fair chance of getting away. With the Patriot missile, there is no getting away from it. No pilot has ever been fired at with a Patriot missile and survived.
You can look up their performance used in SA and Israel’s interceptions, since they use very very similar equipment to Patriot. Spoiler alert: it’s pretty good.
As I recall, most of the failures of the patriot system were when used by Saudi forces, who apparently did not take training seriously and were essentially incompetent. Systems run by the competent are very good indeed, and FAR better than anything the Russians have ever made.

Great video. Just one correction. S-300PS does have Anti Ballistic Missile capability. Its only S-300PT that initially did not have ABM but its unlikely they were not upgraded to ABM. Only major difference between S-300 PT and PS today is mobility. The speed of all S-300 missiles is good enough to intercept ballistic missiles. Dont need to be as fast as a target.
It's more complex than that, I don't think there are any original 5V55 missiles in operation anywhere. The PVO switched almost all of their missiles over to the 5V55K as soon as they were available.
The S and T at the end of the designation denotes the launcher type. T for trailer, S for Semimobile (using the multi wheeled launcher we all know and love), M for modernized, MU for modernized export.
That brings you to the fall of the Soviet Union when S300PMU-1 (SA20A) and S300PMU-2 (SA20B) became the primary S300 variants deployed.
The first letter of the designator is the branch the S300 was developed for. S300P for the PVO (Air Defense Forces), V for the Army (Voyska in Russian), and F for the Navy (Flot for short).
The real capabilities are down to the missile variant used. The 5V55 has a bunch of variants in use. The most common ones are the 5V55U/5V55RUD. That said, the underlying radar systems are all effectively the same system with a wide array of compatability for older missiles. Since the systems can be reloaded, if assume nearly every S-300PT in use is using newer missiles than the original command guided one from the late 1970s.
Yeah 5x s300 destroyed by russian lancet in 2 days. Ukraine got fucked

In terms of the war in Ukraine I watch all of Perun's videos and sometimes suchomimus for some combat footage (his voice drives me nuts tbh but he's consistent with his uploads)
Decent reporting
Not mentioned in this video is that although it would be nice to form an impenetrable shell of ground based air defense thorughout Ukraine, the country is too large to do just that.
But, air defense doesn't have to be 100% impenetrable to be effective.
Russia isn't going to risk its irreplaceable manned aircraft that likely cost over $50M each to build plus carring armament that could cost tens of millions more in airspace likely or even possibly defended by ground based air defense.
The result is a shell game where Ukraine moves its air defenses around and Russia guesses where they are and aren't. If Russia dares risk flying a sortie in airspace and guesses wrong, it's a major loss to the Russians but if it guesses right, it might be able to deliver that payload of bombs and missiles and return home. It's not a very good risk/return value proposition for the side flying manned aircraft in Ukraine on either side so you don't hear many reports of manned aircraft missions of CAS or independent attacks.
It only takes 5 minutes from the moment the search radar is activated to a kinzhal arrival, patriot is only "good" for point defense of one critical target far away from the front line
@@Awaken2067833758 I guess if you are operating under the assumption that Russia keeps (or is able to keep) a 24/7 CAP of Khinzal equipped strike aircraft, which they don’t.
They also don’t have the comms to capitalize off of fleeting intel, which is why so many high value mobile Ukrainian targets remain intact (HIMARS etc).
@@jonathanpfeffer3716 they don't need to keep them 24/7, to have them in alert is more than enough. HIMARS can launch and run, patriot is a sitting duck
@@Awaken2067833758 That’s not true. If it was, S-300s would be dropping like flies everyday. Yet they aren’t, because the VKS is not able to properly conduct DEAD missions.
And a Russian fighter, even if it were already armed and fueled, couldn’t take off and get within launch range in 5 minutes, even if it were stationed at the closest airbases to the front.
@@jonathanpfeffer3716 it is hard to destroy a lot when only a small number of S-300 are left. 2000Km is the kinzhal range, they only need to get to launch altitude and the mig-31 is very good at that. 6 minutes is the flight time from Crimea to the furthest parts of Ukraine
Perun is a great military analysis channel
strongly disagree.
@@operator9858 Yep. It's much more than a great military analysis. It's also a great geopolitics analysis and economics channel.
@@wai828 its so biased and one sided that you know less then what you went in with typically...
@@operator9858 I ask you of proves of this biased. Because you sound biased to my?
@@TheRezro lol is this a serious question? okay; they have been going straight off of kyiv intelligence reports and have done none of their own research.
as plainly demonstrated by looking at just their video titles alone when considering that the recent leak not only says the opposite to their claims, but that Jens Stoltenburg himself confirmed the ammunition and casualty figures in the report were accurate the very next day.
and have you seen them talking about any of this? about how ukraine is in dire straits or any thing of that nature? or how zelensky fired his whole cabinet not long ago? or pretty anything that might make ukraine look bad?
I also watch Jake Broe, Perun, Warthog Defense, Covert Cabal, CaspianReoprt, William Spaniel, to name just a few.
The Operations Channel would be an awesome channel to work with!
@@stranger6797 You caught me, totally a robot "stranger"
@@PhillyPhanVinny Sorry I missed the last part of the video, I was wondering why so many accounts were talking about other channels, thought they were bots
@@stranger6797 no prob man!
As far as other channels I like to watch, it’d be cool to see a collab with the intel report. They make overhead battle animations of past conflicts
I hope it works well for them.
Paper skies has good content
Great technical video.thanks
just one remark : voice was very monotonous which sometime didn't give credit to the great work and research behind
Most CZcams videos speak slowwwwwly because intelligent people will wait for good content, but stupid people will click away in the first few seconds which means the viewcount doesn't increase - and CZcamsrs are paid by viewcounts/likes/subscribers. Meanwhile you can double the speed of the video, that's what I do with most of them (unless it's music or heavily intellectual)
One of the leaked documents, dated 23 February and marked “Secret”, outlines in detail how Ukraine’s Soviet-era S-300 air defense systems would be depleted by 2 May at the current usage rate. The fact that Russia is doing bombing runs seemed to indicate that Ukraine does not have enough missiles and launchers to cover the vast area needed to deter Russian airstrikes within Ukranian controlled territories. The Patriot surface to air missiles given by the West is unlikely to change the battle as a whole due to its limited numbers either.
Sadly, two systems are far too few. No matter how good they are. But I'm pretty certain Ukraine is thankful for everything they can get. Just hope they can survive this madness and kick the russian invaders out. If putin doesn't fall, ruzzia will go from war to war.
@@sebastianwendl603Go from war to war like...from Afghanistan to Irak (twice), Yugoslavia with a pinch of Syria and Libya? Are you for real?
@@sebastianwendl603 I thought Russia's military would need 10+ years to recover from the losses already suffered, but now they're going to launch another war as soon as Ukraine is defeated?
Asuming those are true. And not changed like those absurd casualty figures they altered.
@@stc3145 What casualties ratings do you consider to be true?
As always it is so instructive to have such an indeep and unbiassed analysis like yours on this very sensitive for Ukraine's war outcome. Keep it up against Pussyn's trolls.
Perun, Covert Cabal, Task & Purpose, Sandboxx, DW News (does that count?). There are others but those are what I remember recently.
The Enforcer, Joe Broe, Denis, Arthur Rehi, Combat Veteran, The Russian Dude, Sandbox everything from Dark, Infographic, Tank Museum Bro so many..
I dont like the russian dude cause his tittles are to an extent clickbait, Denis is better because he reports on both Ukrainian and Russian successes fairly which gives a better insight on how the war is actually going

TVP is the same as Fox News
It seems like overkill to intercept a shovel a guy throws at you
ahh, it is strange that you compare the Patriot PAC-3 with the S-300. The real comparison (in terms of equal capabilities) should be with the S-400.
Ukraine has S-300, and from what i'm aware, they dont have s400 or if they do, the small numbers are what killed that comparison from ever happening
Perun and Ryan McBeth along with The Chieftain, World War Two and Forgotten Weapons provide a big percentage of what videos I watch.

the problem is they are running out of S300 missiles. not because its not better. because they have depleted theirs.
