NATO always relied on their airpower as well. The only reason soviets had so many anti air defenses, is because their airforce was never a match to nato. They knew it, and that is why they invested in ground artillery and anti air. Highest chances are that nato would destroy most of the incoming forces purely with various aircrafts, and destroy everything they can find with long range cruise missiles. Remember: the second largest military organisation in the world is the USAF. And we are not talking about conscripts, but highly trained pilots that can also attack anti air defenses with SEAD missions, something russia even today is not capable of.
