The Reasons Behind Abrams Tank Losses in Ukraine

  • A few months ago, the arrival of M1 Abrams tanks on the battlefield instilled fear in Russian troops. When the US announced their deployment in December 2023, a wave of optimism soared across Ukraine. Nicknamed “The Beast” for their firepower and armor, these tanks were seen as a turning point, a weapon expected to tip the scales decisively in Ukraine’s favor.
    This euphoria, however, proved short-lived. By April 2024, reports of mounting losses began to surface. The Donbas region, once a hopeful battleground for Ukraine, became a graveyard for these powerful machines. At least five Abrams destroyed in a single month, falling victim to a swarm of cheap, commercially produced Russian drones.
    Faced with these sobering losses, Ukraine has been forced into a difficult decision: to withdraw its remaining Abrams tanks from the front lines. The US is scrambling for a solution, working alongside Ukraine to develop new tactics while the Abrams are out of commission.
    This unexpected setback makes us wonder: how could these seemingly invincible machines fall prey to a low-tech threat? Could the real problem lie not with the Abrams themselves, but with the way they were deployed?
    To answer those questions, let’s first explore the historical and technical context of these beasts!

This isn't fair to the soldiers using that equipment bc when that equipment inevitably gets destroyed, the blame is shifted to the soldiers. They are on the front line, risking their lives. They deserve to know the truth about the equipment sent as well as the public. I have seen dozens upon dozens of various types of equipment get touted as invincible game changers. We are being lied to about this war, the equipment and many other matters. This war is going very badly for Ukraine. They need to get a ceasefire and pull their tattered nation together and rebuild.
      Жаль что от этих действий страдают обычные налогоплатильщики ЕС и США, а правительство набивает карманы долларами и евро.

      @Oleg111222333 Před 6 dny +1

      Better than Russian tanks? Are you sure? T-90 - smoothbore 125 mm gun. When firing armor-piercing cumulative and sub-caliber ammunition, the maximum sighting range is 4000 m, guided missile ammunition - 5000 m, high-explosive fragmentation ammunition along a ballistic trajectory up to 10,000 m. Abrams - when using the most common M829 projectile, the sighting range is 4300 meters. Abrams, by the way, is not even really a tank. The armor scheme of the tank should be approximately the same on all sides due to the fact that in a battle in an urban environment the enemy may unexpectedly be on the side. According to the front armor scheme, the Abrams is more consistent with the self-propelled guns. But for a self-propelled gun, its weapon is too weak. Also, the standard Abrams ammunition loadout has a very small amount of high-explosive ammunition, it is mainly equipped with anti-tank shells. Which is also very typical for self-propelled guns. If someone walks like a duck, if someone quacks like a duck, then perhaps it is a duck? The main purpose of self-propelled guns is to destroy enemy tanks from a safe distance using a more powerful long-range gun. But Abrams does not have a powerful long-range gun. So what is its advantage?

      True , but given that Russia has lost over 8,000 tanks and 12000 apc,s it proves the point that tanks are not designed to take on drones. If they were why is Russia’s t-14 supertank not been deployed. Russia has used old t55 and t 62 tanks to offset the losses in t80 and t-90 models. Mbt are not suited to modern war whereas lighter more agile tanks may be or well designed Bradley are proving to be very effective. Tanks on tank warfare is a thing of the past for all armies.
