It’s not off target. You don’t understand how this works. Air blast radius causes MORE damage than direct impact
All depend on the target. If you want the max collateral damage, like a small village, you're correct. Or a large lager of tanks. But if you're aiming for large object like an aircraft carrier, a large building, a bridge, you want to be ON target.
For example. The MOAB is a large area denial weapon, but the pave bombs are not.

I don't think they will ever use the FAB 9000 in Ukraine. It's to heavy. You cant drop it from a Sukhoi plane. You need a large plane for that. Don't think it can glide so far either way. To risky.

Those FAB-3000 is most likely just a test of UMPK for super heavy bombs like FAB-3000... OR... for FAB-9000. Another words, its a proof of concept, that UMPK for 9 ton bomb is actually possible. There is no any propaganda here.

Needless to say, it was total bullcrap of an article, and everybody keeps making fun of it to this day.

The FAB-3000 is better at destroying underground bunkers. This video's analogy of throwing darts doesn't account for all situations. Sometimes you need FAB-1500s. Sometimes you need FAB-3000. If you need more pinpoint surface accuracy, the FAB-1500 is better. If your target is underground, or spread out over an area, or you are unsure exactly where (like within a heavily forested area), then the FAB-3000 is better. The critics are comparing apples to oranges. It's not one or the other. Both are required for different situations.

A single 3000 is lighter than three 1500's, making the aircraft that is carrying it lighter, more fuel efficient, increasing the aircraft's speed and travel range and maintaining better maneuverability before it unleashes its payload.
A lot of reasons to appreciate this much more powerful bomb.
Some targets you just can't reach with 3000, if I may add.

The SU-34 is a true multirole aircraft.
They are just practicing and fine tuning. Getting ready to introduce the FAB-6000 which will be delivered by the Big bombers.
Even 3X FAB-1500's may not be strong enough to penetrate deep bunkers. By carefully observing and adjusting the delivery; Russia is able to perfect their accuracy. Getting information this way; allows you to test new weapons in real-life situations rather than on proving grounds that never really reflect how things will work out. Congratulations Russia !

Not sure how many Chips Russia has to equip in Fab 1500's for their guidance system. The Fab 3000 only needs one but to send 3 of the 1500's would use up three guidance systems worth of technology. It might not be the devastation so much as how many they ability to equip.

The US didn’t spend money researching a pen you donut. It was the Fisher Pen company who who patented a pen that can be used in zero gravity, underwater and extreme temperatures which they provided immediately to NASA and has been used on every mission since. LED pencils routinely break and require sharpening and create debris and even leave black led smudge on your fingertips when contacting the led. It’s amazing to me the Russians and you thought they were the smart ones for not having the foresight nor the push for advancements and can’t see the problems from led or wood shaving debris floating around in a sterile environment like that.
Guess that’s why somehow pulling a Soviet era glide bomb out of storage and strapping an outdated no longer used satellite guidance system to the bomb and being very happy if you came within a football field length of your target and celebrating an attack on an empty building in the middle of no where and cutting the video before the smoke clears and the building is still standing with no apparent main structural damage.

It's really simple - the 3000 series bomb is a bunker buster, when you need to destroy deep underground shelters. Russians tested 3 things: if it can be equipped whit glider system(check), if it can mounted of on a frontline bomber like su34 (not strategic ones)(check), and if it can still fulfill its main purpose in bunker busting (still testing).

Attacking civilians has no military value. It is based on the bogus douhetian doctrine that says that attacking civilians will demoralize the enemy. In Japan 65 cities full of civilians were leveled and they did not surrender. The nuclear attacks had smaller destruction area than air raids.

While a precision guided FAB is useful against munitions depots and forward communication headquarters, incendiary ('ZAB') and volume detonating bombs ('ODAB') are most harmful to personnel and unarmoured equipment within their blast radius.
Interestingly, aside from the TOS flame thrower system, their deployment was never reported - maybe in order to minimize collateral damage of civilians.
The context of these heavy aerial bombs is to fight a war with as much devastation as with tactical nuclear arms, but without the political 'fallout' - in contrast to stand-off range cruise-missiles and compact optical guided bombs ('KAB'), a FAB arsenal, modernized with correction modules can be deployed en masse in a large scale war of attrition...
