  • Why Russia’s Glide Bombs are Almost Impossible for Ukraine to Stop | War on Tape | Daily Mail
Glide bombs are the latest terrifying weapon Russia is using in its war on Ukraine. By strapping wings and GPS kits to Soviet bombs weighing up to 1.5 tons, Putin’s warplanes are now able to demolish Ukrainian defences and help their troops advance. With the help of air power expert Justin Bronk of the RUSI think-tank, we uncover how these new weapons work, why they are almost impossible for Ukraine to stop, and why - despite that - they probably won’t win the war for Moscow.

And just as important, Russia's stuff is generally built to last. I bet you could lock them in a storage room for 50 years and they'd still work fine. Meanwhile, the US stuff will need rigorous maintenance. Even the MOABS that were used needed to be nearly rebuilt after something like 10 years, and partially because of fears of premature detonation in storage. If you look at old soviet missile guidance systems, they're almost artfully engineered, but they're built sturdy and with parts that can be easily sourced. But probably most importantly, Russia has always designed its hardware for the full rigors of a chaotic full scale war like WW2. Their jets can land and take off almost anywhere, even with rubble all around. Meanwhile if a US jet tries to land or takeoff on any runway that hasn't been extensively swept and polished, rocks are going to destroy the engine. I'd say in a pinch they'd risk it, but in general, if a runway is damaged, basically every plane there would be grounded until it could be fixed, and runways don't get fixed overnight, that stuff takes a LONG time. Granted again, I think they could make some shortcuts to get a runway operational in a pinch, but it could be dangerous and probably have issues with sturdiness, meaning you really want to do it the hard long way, not the easy way, because if you're kicking up gouges out of the patches every X number of takeoffs or landings, you've got a serious continuing problem.

But so far we have seen two gamer changers in this fight. Lancet and FAB. Next gamechanger will be new russian artillery system Koalicia SV. Russians have problem with artillery range because they use older systems that have short range compared to western variants. Koalicia SV will be longest range self propelled artillery system that will move russian striking range far forward. Rumours say limited numbers are being used already, but they need alot of them.

And then came the "expert". Those Ukrainian air defences that kept RU aviation humble were actually what they inherited from the USSR in huge numbers, the western ones are small in numbers. Russia until the end of 2023 used 7400 cruise missiles and half as many Geraan drones in UA mainly to deplete those air defences. It worked, by now most of them are gone, allowing Russia to switch to shorter range and less expensive weapons, such as glide bombs. M-62 means "Model of 1962". It either indicates the year it was designed or the one it entered service. It does NOT mean it was manufactured in 1962. They are still being manufactured today. Even the Wikipedia article on these bombs clearly states that for crying out loud.
EDIT: There are tons of other mistakes of varying severity in the video, that need to be addressed. so here we go...
The UMPKs are not fitted with "GPS trackers". You can call these electronic modules "satellite navigation modules", "GNSS modules/receivers" and other such terms to indicate they enable the bomb to use satellite navigation. GPS specifically refers to the US satellite navigation system, with its 100% US built, owned and operated satellite constellation. I don't think I need to state why it's a terrible idea to use your enemy's GNSS to guide your own bombs. Russians outfit their UMPKs with GNSS receivers designed to work with their own, domestic system, GLONASS.
The kind of missile countermeasure seen dumped in the Su-34 clip at 2:54 is called "chaff" and bares 0 similarity to a flare both in looks and function. Flares are meant to distract missiles using IR seekers, and 99% of such missiles have a very short range ( e.g. MANPADS ). Chaff on the other hand is meant to provide a false target for missiles using active or semi-active radar guidance. It's essentially a puff of metallic confetti that reflects radiowaves extremely well in all directions, hence why it lights up like a Christmas tree on radar. Missiles using radar guidance are usually designed for medium up to extremely long range shots, and as such they are exactly the one single type of threat that these Su-34s flying high and far away from Ukrainian airspace must be aware of and defend against.
The UMPK fitted bombs are VERY accurate. They can easily achieve a

The germans had encircled a group of them and told them to surrender. They lifted the white flag and as soon as the germans approached them, they shot at the germans and killed a few of them. The germans than attacked and were able to take them out, put a few of these dirty fighting soldiers against the wall because of their actions before. Later the british claimed that it was a massacre done by the germans and of course never mentioned what really went down. Typical british.

    • @Comm0ut
      @Comm0ut Před 24 dny +35

Jamming only degrades GPS. Jamming does not affect INS but INS as fitted to supplied JDAM kits is only yields ~30 meter CEP while GPS yields ~5 meter CEP (per public release anyway). Reducing effectiveness is not the same thing as rendering supplied JDAM "useless". In the perpetual electronic race expect both sides to invest in home-on-jam missile systems for SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defensed). Jamming and countermeasures constantly evolve.
Glavset and friends naturally prefer absolutist assertions which make better propaganda given their non-technical audience. Tabloid media in the West are equally silly but the simple masses demand simple assertions or their eyes glaze over.

The US has placed its bets on winning wars based on fear, chaos, terror, death, and destruction, in high level intensity battlefields, these are tricks. This war in Ukraine is not a war of tricks, but a war of attrition, in a real war, the US tricks don't work, none of it. This might also explain the huge shortfall of US weapons on hand. That is because, a small amount of super weapons, with tricks, always did the trick, and it was supposed to do the trick, again, on Russia, in Ukraine. Before this, it was enough, there was never a need for huge stockpiles of US weapons.
Well, that's just too bad, Russia and its large stockpiles of weapons has already won this war, and The US is once again in a defeatist position, yet, in stubbornness and shame, it's refusing to concede defeat. Instead, the US continue on with its tricks, but no matter how long it keeps this up, the US will have no choice but to concede, any which way it chooses.

The USA invaded Iraq and in 2 months took over a country the same size as Ukraine and only lost 120 solders. Russia has lost over 50,000 military and another 50,000 mercenaries and is very far from taking even 1/4 of Ukraine. But the real play is that the west does not care, it broke off from Russia oil and gas without any issues and is no longer have any relations with Russia, you cannot visit Russia you cannot trade with Russia, the relations are gone and may never be repaired again.

British strategists devised "Operation Unthinkable," an apt name for what would have been World War III. This document is the property of His Majesty’s Government. The war with the Soviet Union was to begin on 1 July 1945.
This operation began in April 1945, when the war was not over, but the outcome was clear. The possible distribution of forces in the world after the victory over Germany, already at that time did not please the United Kingdom and the USA, so the «Unthinkable» was hastily planned. So did the "allies" of Soviet Russia.
The document, which is now in the UK National Archives, details all the steps of the operation. Operation Unthinkable (1945) assumed a surprise attack by up divisions forces of the "allies", the "dogface" troops in the area of Dresden, in the middle of Soviet lines.
A surprise attack by 47 British and American divisions supported by 10-12 German divisions, which "allies" held as not generated in Schleswig-Holstein and in southern Denmark should support the blow, they were daily trained by the British instructors: prepared for the war against the USSR.
The storming of Berlin sobered the British. The conclusion of the Chiefs of Staff of the British troops was clear: the blitzkrieg against the Russians would not work. On this was completed the development of operation «Unthinkable».
Meanwhile, while planning a war against the USSR, the pragmatic allies persuade Stalin to help them with the Japanese after defeating Germany.
Americans after World War II are almost masters of peace. Not the Soviet Union, which fought fascists for four years, liberated all of Europe, losing more than 20 million people and a quarter of the economy on the front and civilians, but the United States, which once again managed to use the war to their advantage.
History is repeating itself... again. "Operation Unthinkable” is ongoing...
HISTORIA EST MAGISTRA VITAE - history is the mentor of life (Cicero).
History is not a teacher, but a overseer : she teaches nothing, but severely punishes ignorance of lessons. (O.V. Klyuchevsky, Russian historian).

The right to self-defense is in the UN Charter. Russia is trying to take possession of an independent sovereign country by force. The UN agreed, United Nations Resolution ES‑11/4 called on Russia to "immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw" from Ukraine as it is violating its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The resolution passed with 143 countries in favor, 35 abstaining, and only 5 against

@@1maico1 The Russian Federation is both the successor and continuator
of the Soviet Union. Russia automatically continues the international rights and obligations of the USSR. Articles 106 and 107 of the United Nations Charter give Russia, as the successor to the winner of the Second World War, the right to all measures, including military measures, against countries reviving Nazism. In Ukraine, the Nazis are part of the power and security structures.
Modern Ukraine, which has taken the official course on the complete reformatting of history, as well as the glorification and continuity with the collaboration and terrorist formation of OUN-UPA, automatically falls into the list of states where the results of the Second World War are reviewed.
Taking all these factors into account, the victorious States or their successors have every right to restore the status quo by whatever measures they deem necessary, including military intervention, denazification and - attention! - revision of the territorial integrity of the ideological heirs of Nazism.

In stark contrast, the Russian Armed Forces arguably field the most advanced EW systems worldwide, and at an extremely large scale. Virtually every single Russian HVT, such as command centers, naval bases, airfields, significant bridges, etc are all protected by EW.

They even had a missile system that knocked down a U2 spy plane that was at 60,000 feet, in 1960, a time when America had zero smart missiles. In 1994, an old Russian air defense system brought down an F117. So Russia has always been way ahead of the west in military tech and guided bombs.
