Russia’s army is learning - here’s why it should worry the West | Defence in Depth

  • There is a bit of a myth about Russia’s army in Ukraine. That Moscow’s soldiers are inexperienced, ramshackle troops sent into hopeless charges at well-defended positions at the behest of inexperienced and brutal commanders. They have little tactical sense and even less strategic vision.
Of course, some of that is true - the Russians do use ‘meatgrinder’ assaults, armoured columns often do run into trouble in Ukrainian minefields (with pyrotechnic results) and Russia frequently relies on troops with insufficient training and poor kit.
Even today, huge numbers of armoured vehicles and tanks are being lost as Russian forces attempt to advance and it’s a live question how long such losses can be borne.
But the Russians aren’t stupid, and the army does learn, albeit slowly.

I read in the Telegraph endlessly in 2022 that Russia was running out of missiles, then it was tanks and then it was computer chips.
I read endlessly in the Telegraph in 2022 and until recently that the Russians were losing hundreds of thousands of men reduced to and were relying on badly trained convicts to be used in hopeless mass infantry attacks. Yet Mariupol fell, Bakhmut fell, Lyzichan fell and now Avdayaka fell.
I read endlessly in the Telegraph about our wonderful game changing weapons and how the Russian’s had useless old kit. Yet it’s the west sending near obsolete F16s to face the enormous Russian missile air defence and air force.
We in the UK have just 40 working tanks and 60 fighter planes and Cameron is talking about sending our troops to Ukraine with the French.
The peace deal of 2022 should have been signed with a huge sigh of relief.
Now Ukraine is done and hundreds of thousands of its soldiers dead or wounded, the country smashed and no longer a democracy. Zelensky lies about there being just 31,000 dead, while demanding more Patriot Systems that exist in the whole world to defend against hypersonic Russian missiles that nothing can shoot down. He says they need a further 500,000 young men to fight.
The UK by fighting a war with a peer competitor in 1914 brought an end to our hegemony, despite winning. Losing in Ukraine which NATO surely will is going to end US hegemony.
Only now is it beginning to dawn on the Telegraph that Russia is even winning.

      Absolutely, precisely correct.
The Telegraph is just another sorry example of the kinds of sneering, arrogant Western propaganda outlets that airily dismissed Russia's chances of winning. The Telegraph and the rest of the pro-Ukraine propagandists systematically lied about the war right from the start -- claiming (for example) that "Russia will run out of missiles no later than end of summer 2022" (I remember that one like it was yesterday) and these agitprop peddlers are still at it, even though EVERY ONE of their claims has been debunked in the time since the war began.
We are now, largely due to hubris and stupefying arrogance on the part of the West (particularly "leaders" whose names should live in infamy, e.g. Boris Johnson and Victoria Nuland), in the very dangerous position of EITHER allowing Ukraine to be defeated and at least partially over-run by the Russians... OR committing NATO troops directly to fight the Russian Army in Ukraine. The latter case carries with it a terrifyingly real possibility of rapid escalation to the tactical or even strategic nuclear level.
And all because we were lied to by the likes of the Telegraph (as well as by Western political leaders). History will not be kind to these idiots... that is, if there even IS a history, past the next couple of years.

If the US had the weapons ready to go but was waiting for a check from congress to clear, it would have easily found a work around to get the weapons to Ukraine months ago.
