In this video, we will take a look at two glide bombs: the Soviet-era FAB 500 and the American-made JDAM smart bombs.
One of the major differences is that the American weapons when attached with a guidance tail kit converts the unguided Bomb, such as the Mark 82, into "smart" munitions weapon.
In contrast, the FAB 500, requires a guidance kit that can open its wings and fly to its target using the GLONASS, Russian guidance system.
The upgraded Fab 500 glide weapon costs around $24,000, while the J dam, costs approximately $36,000.
We’ll also take a look a look at the basic step-by-step process of the Fab 500 glide bomb works not to forget the operation of JDAMER all in the video ahead.

Those guided FABs cost even less since there are millions of stockpiles left from 40-70 years ago, only slight refurbishment is necessary and mounting of UMPK kit and it is good to go, that is why are used so much even for small costly target as trench positons. And one more thing, there are many variants of each weight of type of bomb like ОДАБ (fuel air/thermobaric most deadly against living targets and multiple times more deadly than TNT), ЗАБ (incendiary), ФЗАБ (High explosive incendiary) and many different types, soviet engineering ain't just shovels and rocks like many people in west think, and all of these types can be used easily wth each UMPK kit as necessary, with low price.

Still not actually seen in action: instead there is the newly produced Drel and the UMPK version of the thermobaric ODAB and cluster RBK bombs.
The great news is instead the apparition of a completely different new family of bomb, the UMPB D-30SN .
It's seems that in this case the bomb is fully modular and could come with an jet engine for aerial use and/or with a rocket propeller allowing it to be launched from Smerch MRLS.

@@apolloaero The USSR and Russia had it back then too though. They got raped with shock therapy from America so lost at least 15 years recovering. America who was unopposed for 20-25 years and had essentially unlimited resources has not gotten that much further than Russia, particularly when yo Lu factor in the military budgets. Even China who only spends 1/4 to 1/3 of what America does on military is close to catching up and will surpass the USA by 2035-2040. They came from decades behind the USA on military technology just a decade or two ago.
I have to imagine that without the complete breakup of USSR and such extreme measures by America to attack decimate Russia in the non military really the USSR or combined successor would significantly ahead of the USA at this point at the very least militarily. They would probably even be ahead of all if NATO both in terms of technology and production numbers.
America, the EU and western NATO countries have been completely imploding, especially in the lead five years. Can you imagine an Eurasian block with all the former USSR and China? By the time USSR collapsed, relations with China were on a trajectory to be where they are between China and Russia now.
Russia and China do a whole lot more than USA and NATO with a whole lot less. If NATO and “Pacific NATO” had to fight Russia and China in a conventional war they wouldn’t even have any weapons left to fight with at this point.

@@apolloaero First time I hear about 16000 feet ceiling, TBH. If this was the case, they would've been converting Su-24s en masse for UMPK use to increase their striking capabilities. Yet they only use Su-34s, which has, I think, almost twice the ceiling of Su-24 (10k-is vs 20k-is).
      Makes no sense.
As for accuracy - its improving. It was used to be around 50%, and often a target would receive up to 4 bombs targeting the same area just to be sure. Now there are more and more examples of single UMPK-kitted bombs being used on a single target or entire barrage designated to several areas (like strongpoints along a trenchline) with high effect. They still seem to have worse CEP compared to JDAM, but they've markedly improved since the first introduction almost a year and a half ago. And with a new type of glider bomb being introduced recently, Russians are seem to aim at improving the accuracy even more.
You also miss a very important factor - unlike JDAM, UMPK is truly universal, just as U strands for. 3 variants for 3 bomb calibers (250, 500, 1500 kg), each able to fit practically any type of bomb in-caliber. Be it high-drag, low-drag, HE, HE-frag, thermobaric or cluster, with optional aerodynamic hood for high-drags. And technically, the kit could fit literally any bomb of said calibers, even those that are not used right now.
Simply put - it is much more versatile compared to JDAM. And its cost, given Russians mostly used old stocks, is in practice even less than stated in this video. And it requires less work to be installed.
If we discard lesser accuracy (and range on some variants), UMPK is objectively superior to JDAM-ER.

    • @apolloaero
      @apolloaero Před 22 dny +1

@@mauser98kar probably has to do woth logistics and existing infrastructure, and the Su-34 is probably the more survivable platform. Also, if you noticed, russia is also using low-level bomb runs. These aircraft are flying at low altitude before making a quick climb to release their payload, then quickly flare, turn back and continue to fly low. They're not flying high due to the SAM threat. All bomb and missile releases have launch parameters btw
As for accuracy, there's a reason they're focusing on the FAB-3000 and are using FAB-1500 more. It compensates for the larger CEP.
JDAM is a kit that's placed on existing bombs. They are used on Mk 82/83/84 bombs, which are all different sizes, ranging from 500 lbs to 2000 lbs. The GBU-31 uses the Mk 84, for example, a 2000 lb bomb. However, it can also use thr BLU-109, a bunker-buster. And since we don't use cluster bombs anymore, there's a version with the BLU-136, basically airburst fuze with high fragmentation. For the GBU-38, you have a version with a composite case that disintegrates when it explodes, this is a low collateral version of the 500 lb bomb. GBU-54/55/56 add laser guidance to GPS/INS guidance. As for launch parameters, they're less strict. An F-22 managed to launch a 1000 lb GBU-32 at speeds of mach 1.5 at an altitude of 50k feet, and still hit its target over 40 km away.
As you can see, the versatility is there. So no, the UMPK is not better.

JDAMs are not exactly some ultra sophisticated technology. NATO nations have had them much longer than Russia, which seems to have only deployed them relatively recently, but they’ve known about it for a long time.
These are supposed to switch to inertial guidance if they detect A disruption or a problem with the GPS signal. This makes them less accurate, but when this happens, the Russian bombs have an advantage since they are larger. The larger explosive means that they are still likely to destroy their target even if they go off a little bit.

The FAB 500 knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the FAB 500 from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the FAB 500 is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the FAB 500 must also know where it was.

Also it's worth mentioning that Su34 and UMPK FABs are a system. Su24s cannot effectively use this weapon because they can climb only up to 10 km with it, which (since it's a gravity weapon) significantly reduces the range and thus makes it unsafe for pilots. While Su34 drops these from 20 km height.
Much like Mig31 and Kinzhal, other planes cannot so effectively speed the missle up to supersonic speed before launching it. Which gives the Iskander's missile a little more oomph, like 1-1,5 km/s on top, and more range.

A small correction. FAB (ФАБ) - High Explosive Aviation Bomb (Фугасная Авиационная Бомба). It's not just High Explosive. 1:11

You've raised the price almost three times. The cost announced by the manufacturers of one set of UMPC (universal descent planning and correction module), with a FAB-500M-62 charge, is about 800,000 rubles, which is about $ 9,000. Where did the sum of 24,000 come from?
