- For years, good relations with China guaranteed the German economy healthy profits and cheap goods. But over time, that relationship has become a dependency. The documentary "In the Jaws of the Dragon - How to Deal with China?” explores the nature and extent of this reliance.
At a summit meeting to discuss the "New Silk Road” infrastructure project in October 2023, China’s President Xi appeared alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. Whether in Asia or the Middle East - China is evidently pushing for a new world order, with offensives directed against the West. Germany is already feeling the consequences.
For a long time, trade with China flourished: From 1984, Volkswagen flooded the Chinese market with cars, ultimately exporting one in every three VWs to China. But now, Chinese companies like BYD are dominating the market with e-cars. And Germany’s reliance on China for computer chips, antibiotics and solar cells can now be seen as downright reckless. This dependence is becoming more evident as China increasingly comes up trumps both politically and economically. Whether regarding the Ukraine war, in its relations with Russia or its continued saber rattling in the conflict with Taiwan: Where China would have once conducted itself with restraint, it now demands its slice of global power. In Berlin, politicians are rubbing their eyes in disbelief: what was once a healthy relationship is now a codependency. And there’s no easy way out.

The difference unless you haven't worked it out is that the West gave back it's colonies after they were developed - China has given zero inclination to giving back Tibet, Xinjiang, Hainan, ... and is not shy about stating it's intentions to invade Taiwan.
Also, all China's investments overseas involve zero technology sharing (all are Chinese built AND operated) - the West on the other hand was marked by it's sharing of technologies and culture with the rest of the World.

The term "dependency" alone, which is now constantly heard, is ultimately silly.
There is a contractual set of rules, trade relations with rules that everyone has to abide by.
So everyone is dependent on everyone else, and that's a good thing.
This is precisely why relations work worldwide, as long as the West does not unfairly shape the agreements to the detriment of weaker countries, which has unfortunately happened in the past.

Over the past ten years, the German government has paid almost one billion euros for the stationing of US troops in Germany. At 648.5 million euros, around two thirds of this was for grants for construction measures and 333.9 million for so-called defense follow-up costs. These primarily include aid payments to former employees of the US armed forces, the repair of damage caused by US soldiers and the reimbursement of US investments at former troop locations. There is no sense in blaming China for taking advantage of Europe. Their job is to look out for China's interests, so why shouldn't they? The blame needs to be directed at our weak leaders who LET China take advantage of us for so long, instead of serving their own people! Uncoupling from this damaging trade relationship should have happened decades ago, but at least some politicians are starting to admit this historic mistake now.

Well, if the problem is with the German companies pushing towards normalizing relations with China at any cost, how about giving an alternative to these companies like - I don't know - create military contracts for these companies to build the German military complex further as well as heightening their output so they can strengthen all their allies through arms sales, would that solve the issue on the short term at least? Basically incentivize the German oligarchs so they start going towards the right direction: away from China and Russia.
This would be exactly the wrong direction, because the big wide world goes with China and Russia for many reasons, only the stupid ones stay behind voluntarily and then complain that nobody wants to play with them.

We’re in the same boat here in the U.S.A., and yes, obviously we still have drug companies that make medications, but they don’t want to make all medication. There’s not a lot of money to be made in selling, or manufacturing, drugs like antibiotics, or some pain relievers. We’re currently having huge shortages of insulin, but that’s manufactured here in our country. The shortages are caused because of Bill Gates, and his fake, lab meat companies. They use so much insulin to make the fake meat, I guess they don’t care if people d*e while they’re making, and testing it. Then again, Gates is part of that d**th cult, so of course he doesn’t care…

Correction: Chinese EVs are cheap not because the government subsidizes them, but because China has a complete domestic supply chain (All components are homemade whereas German carmakers have to import them in order to switch to electric) and almost all the EV patents. This is exactly what happens when countries put corporate profits over innovation and sovereignty. While it does help in the short run, it ruins the competitiveness of the industry in the medium and long term.
I distinctly remember during my University years in China how German cars were ruling all over China and the Germans actually felt great pride on that while shrugging India as a grade 5 market.

How can Chinese webshops sell items for $2 and send it for free while people and companies in the Netherlands have to pay almost $10 to the same postal company if they want to ship the same item domestically? Pretty sure this is also happening in Germany and USA. There's no good explanation for this, extremely unfair to our own people.
The Chinese government subsidises the shipments. We're already in a trade war, we just haven't done anything about it yet.

It’s not fair to blame the ordinary person who has an ordinary income to want pricing according to their income. Wage theft by businesses is a MAJOR PROBLEM.
But corporations push the narrative to “buy more” in subtle but effective ways, such as producing products to fall apart after a certain time.

But that is all temporary, reversible, very quickly when the people are united -- as usually happens in response to external aggression. I was living in NYC on 9/11, for example. Everyone came together immediately.
You have to actually mess with the US for the average person to notice or care (byproduct of the peace dividend). But once he does, watch out. We still have the best geography in the world, with all the permanent strategic and economic benefits of that. There's a lot of talk these days about "the fall of the American empire." Truth is, there has never been an American empire (beyond our own territory). I think the 21st-century is going to reaffirm America's strength and importance to global stability, and foster for many nations the kind of prosperity it fostered for China.

It is weird Germany would be so dependent on Chinese antibiotics. Switzerland export a lot of antibiotics to nations outside the EU, including the USA and Japan. That are also many other EU producers of antibiotics, including Italy, Ireland, Spain, Belgium and Denmark.

How in the world does a country go from being self sufficient to 90% dependent on a single external source for something as critical as antibiotics besides other critically important products, it is ridiculous and outlines a lackadaisical approach towards upholding the territorial integrity of your own country by abiding to the most basic principles of risk management; why would you force people to learn risk management in their acquisition of MBAs but not even apply it in government policy?

The German private company is more rational and easier to do business than the German Government. Volkswagen is already partnered with XPeng to develop EV. There are consequences to being powerful. Better to be a wealthy and neutral country.
Not with our current mindset. To be a global power, like England or Germany who are leaders in sports, manufacturing and high tech we need a major shift in our thinking. We need to agree (both NPP and NDC) to put the nation first instead of our short term agenda, that will mean some sacrifices from us the citizens, like higher taxes, more political engagement through peaceful demonstrations, boycotting cheap political tactics to name a few. No one will take us serious if we keep letting everyone take us for granted, especially our political elites who to be frank are mostly clueless on important issues and the way forward. To be become like Germany or ENgland or France is certainly attainable , in terms of population we need to grow 3x, natural resources (we probably have more), human resources (we need to prioritise this and improve education and especially technical training, attract diasporans too), enabling environments for businesses to thrive (tax exemptions for capital intensive businesses in the years until profitability, no shady tax collectors harassing businesses, police only looking out for themselves).
Maybe more ask why we can't produce our own needs. Something is wrong within our own system.
