  • China has escalated the scale of its military exercises in the Taiwan Strait over the past two years, while the United States has increased its rhetoric in support of the island.
    Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
The Democratic Progressive Party, which has championed a separate Taiwanese identity, has secured a third presidential term.
President Lai Ching-te said in his inauguration speech that Taiwan is already a sovereign nation.
Beijing has responded angrily with the latest round of military drills.
So where does China go from here? And how far is the US willing to go in support of Taiwan?
    Presenter: Tom McRae
    Guests:
Fang-yu Chen - Assistant professor of political science at Soochow University, Taiwan
Victor Gao - Vice President of the Center for China and Globalization
Tomohiko Taniguchi - Special adviser at the Fujitsu Future Studies Centre. He advised Japan's cabinet during Shinzo Abe's administration

The fact is that both US and Japan do not recognize Taiwan as a country and no offiical foreign relationship with so called Taiwan government.
It is a very complicated issue but basic facts are quite clear.
US is using Taiwan as a tool for maintaining its influence in APAC. The key is US vs China, not Japan , or Taiwan itself.

I just want to point out two facts:
    1. The Taiwan everyone is referring to here has a legal name called the Republic of China (ROC)
    2. The constitution of ROC states that ROC is the rightful government of the entirety of China including Mainland China. And in “Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area” it stated many times “Prior to the unification of our country…”

    1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing govt was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan.
    2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it should be implemented.
    3) In 14 Aug & 2 Sept 1945, the Emperor and govt of Japan issued the [End War Edict] and [Japanese Instrument of Surrender], Japan surrendered and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. Japanese troops in Taiwan surrendered to KMT General CKS and Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic of China (ROC).
    4) Soon after that China civil war broke out in between KMT and CCP, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CCP without strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CCP then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The civil war continues.
    5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal govt under international law and is recognized by 181 countries around the world, including the USA.
"The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China."
"The USA acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China."
Joint Cummunique on the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between the PRC and the USA in 1979.
Please refer to President Jimmy Carter's Speech on Relations with China.

Goodness me, as a Chinese by blood, I am bewildered to see this heated argument between a representative from Taiwan, a representative from Beijing, and a scholar if he isn't a politician from Tokyo. From a living soul in Chinese culture and values, I dislike any belligerent behavior. I don't like intimidating language used in these arguments either. However, the confrontation today between the government in the Mainland and across the strait is so hot that any misdemeanor of either party will trigger a war (as described "The Point of No Return").
Please don't take his word lightly - he speaks on the internet media under the blessing of Beijing, therefore, his words are those of the Zhongnanhai, authoritative, and certainly carrying a substantial amount of credibility in them. So when he said President Lai will get what he want (implying he deserved it) with his provocative statements on his inauguration, he should expect the consequences, militarily, not economically or politically, because to the ruling party of China, Mr.Lai has already crossed the "Redline" , hence the military drills are considered "military punishment maneuvers".
Whether or not such hostile actions will bear fruit either further stimulating the DDP in Taiwan to embark another round of anti China movement such as rallying people on the streets in support of independence that directly inflicts military actions from the Mainland, or Taiwan to standup directly to these so called punishments by countering the drills - very dangerous as I can see now, never like before - the tone today is explosive!!!
Sorry to comment on your Japanese guest speaker. You invited the wrong person to represent Japan in this debate. He has no place in this argument. Japan's national interests with Taiwan and China is some politics of different generations of their politicians. No point to go back to any specific documents. Either you are with Taiwan or you are against China in this conflict. Japan is quietly preparing for war but not openly saying they will participate. So by asking your Japanese guest those ambiguous questions did not throw any light in clearing the question you tried to get some crystal clear answers. His responses were basically irrelevant to this current situation. Japan, to me, remained to be someone watching the game and the moment to seize the spoils.

It's not an international treaty for one simple reason, the war hasn't ended yet (not until 1945) so signing legally binding treaty on land not yet acquired would be preposterous (same goes for Potsdam Declaration). ROC in Taiwan is obviously legal regardless of international or diplomatic recognition, same as PRC before it was recognized by UN and the international community between 1949-1971. These discussions are unfortunately focused on political arguments rather than the reality on the ground. The facts are
    1. Most Taiwanees don't want to war nor unification with the mainland China. They prefer the status quo.
    2. Legally speaking, Taiwan and the mainland China are still in civil war status since the national government lost a civil war and fled to Taiwan in 1949.
    3. China's red line is that if Taiwan declares independence then millitary actions will be taken. However China still wants so called peaceful reunification and sees millitary takeover as a last option. Chinese president Xi recently said that as long as both sides can agree that they belong to the same Chinese race, everything is negotiable.
    4. Present Lai's auguration speech is provocative and pushes for independence in the eyes of the mainland Chinese government.
    5. The Chinese government was shocked by president Lai's speech and started millitary drill to intimidate the Taiwan government. Social media platforms in China are boilling and put a lot of pressues on the government to take action.
I think that the provocation from the Taiwan president is unwise and dangerous. The best solution is to keep the status quo and keep political statements vague which both sides can tolerate. It does not benefit either side to start a war, especially they belongs to the same race.

@@miguelmaylee You mean that your option is to evoke a war? The fact is that even Taiwan’s constitution claims that it governs the whole China, not Taiwan only. Although China wants to takeover Taiwan eventually (no leader can give up Taiwan without being engulfed by Chinese people), it claims that is would do it peacefully if possible. I believe this is genuine as the military option is too expensive and dangerous. Taiwan people understand that. In the last Chinese military drill encircling Taiwan, a lot of Taiwanese took Tourist boats to site-seeing the Chinese fleets for fun. Can you believe after the drill starts this time, the headline of Taiwan newspapers is still some news of a Japanese pop star?
My point is that if there is a possibility of peace, all sites should make efforts to avoid war. No one knows what will happen in the future. After the Taiwan new president Lai won the election, Chinese president Xi’s position has been mild and said as long as both sides agree that they belong to the same race, everything is negotiable. There is no sign of an imminent invasion. Before the Taiwan new president inauguration speech, all signs, including a leaked draft, showed that it would be a mild speech that both sides can accept. But the actual speech said Taiwan and China are two separate countries that are not affiliated with each other. This is very near to declare independence, which is the red line for the mainland China. China has a law that requires the government to start a war if that happens. I think the new Taiwan’s president’s action is neither wise nor responsible. It also put Taiwan in immediate dangers unnecessarily.

Victor Gao”s argument is logical, and importantly Japan is irrelevant in this issue.

"Taiwan is part of China." Even if it were, it would be part of the Republic of China, not the People's Republic of China. The People's Republic of China has never ruled Taiwan. Taiwan belongs to the Republic of China. The People's Republic of China and the Republic of China are two separate independent countries. Mao Zedong changed the country's name to the People's Republic of China and abandoned the Republic of China. This act by the Chinese Communist Party is factually a declaration of independence, China declared independence from Taiwan in 1949.
It would be like if the USA after declaring independence from the UK, the USA claims the UK is part of the USA. "Don't you dare declare independence UK!" said the USA.

I don’t know if these analysts understood Chinese, but lai speech and choice of words he used for anyone understands Chinese means tw is an independent country. If Okinawa declares the same words, what would Japan say?
Anw, this is a very worrisome trajectory, it’s highly likely China will be using force.

I believe that Mr Gao's points are consistent with history. So, he is absolutely 💯 right. So sad. I just hope that there will be no Ukraine in Asia.

Ukraine was threatened and attacked by a militarily larger, morally bankrupt and tyrannic regime at a time where it was politically vulnerable. Not exactly a shining example for china to follow in Russia's steps.

The war will over in May 2022😂😂👉 Come on bro, GDP of Russia is only 1/10 the size of China, even then NATO can't defeat Russia.
