Russia is very reliant on European trade, it's where the vast majority of their population lives. Unfortunately for Russia they have also lost alot of allies in Central Asia which has forced them to rely more on China. China sets the rates accordingly.

China just got the bigger pie of Russia's trade because China is the biggest economy next to the U.S and EU. China also produces most of the world's goods. Stuff that Russia used to get from the EU that are also made in China, they now get directly since the EU sanction them and their EU suppliers cannot trade with them anymore. Chinese factories that used to supply goods to EU companies that then sells to Russia now sells directly to Russia.

Why then is Russia being China’s 6th largest trading partner and being a “junior” partner brought up everytime Russia & China are discussed these days. Russia didn't "invade" Ukraine, it joined the eight year war that Ukraine was waging against the Russians in the independent Donbas republics in order to protect those Russians. Russia also restored the water to Crimea that Ukraine cut.

Another important element to this cooperation is that many other nations shall have greater confidence to join and cooperate with these two world powers. Ukraine army is in Russian territory, the ethnic Russian Ukrainian have voted to join Russia
as they now have gotten their self-determination and independence.
Expect they didn’t. Russians just voted to give their land to Ukraine.
Funny how Russia is trying to steal the land where 80% of Ukraines massive, untapped, natural resources reside 🥴
