China is converting its old fighter jets into attack drones, possibly in view of an invasion of Taiwan. Specifically, these drones are numbered in the 600s, and are based at the PLA bases closer to Taiwan's capital, Taipei, and the island logistical hub, Kaohsiung, making these drones a tangible threat in case of an invasion of Taiwan. For these reasons studying these drones movement can become a useful tool in predicting a possible invasion. In this video we will analyse China's conversion of old Soviet era fighter jets into attack drones and we will try to answer two main questions. How could these drones be used in an invasion of Taiwan? How relevant is that for an invasion of the island?

Honestly, converting old jets into combat drones is a genius strategy. It’s very low cost, it’s effective in large numbers, and it all doesn’t cost a single human pilot. It would likely cost the Chinese government more to scrap the planes than to recommission them as drones. And with the sheer numbers of them they could easily overwhelm Taiwan’s modern defensive capabilities. All without costing a single Chinese pilot’s life. They could instead have as many boots on the ground as possible and leave the air support to their drones. The Shenyang J-6 is a formidable and capable fighter aircraft in its time. It will prove to be a formidable fighter in its new life as a UAV.

They could simply use these old jets to overwhelm Taiwan 's air defense systems.
While the air defense systems are busy tracking these drones, a few hypersonic missiles follow and it's bye-bye any targets!

I imagine that these "lesser" jets operated by the computer are connected to one more advanced jet such as the J-11 which has a real human pilot inside them who has total control of the of the computer operated jets. He could assign tasks for the AI-jets for example "shield host jet", "bomb this target" etc. This could make a fighter pilot's job way more efficient and he would act as a "commander of the swarm" or something like that. This would also boost up the efficiency and create more tactical possibilities for the pilot or the squadron mid-flight/-operation.
Yep.. it looks bleak.
That’s a scary thought.
This sounds more like an in-game feature than a real thing.
Congrats, you have an small part of an idea that DARPA has on the work decades ago and that the F35 is already capable of, you can read about the "wingman" and "drone swarm" programs of the USA air force

back in the mid 1980s the USAF initiated a similar program of converting old retired F-4 Phantom II fighter jets into target aircraft during live fire exercises . . . remember the experimental unmanned F-16 . . .
So we can still see Mig-19 or Mig-21 fighting against F-4,but all these fighters are unmanned😂😂🤣

Back when I was 18, ten years ago, I remember telling people that it would be great to use old jets to be used as drones. They have like 500 Fishbeds in storage. Also, they have the ability to make hundreds of drones from wood and some metal pipes. People called me crazy or immature because I got the idea from call of duty games...
Yeah it was kind of obvious this was happening.
I honestly don't know why this would be a good idea. I mean, you can build drones with light material, simple motor will make it fly, while if you want to convert a jet into a drone, then you will need to put in a lot more of steam, it is heavy, I don't see any reason to think it is cost effective to convert aircraft into drones.

Are they legit trying to make their own 'Faceless soldier' from Ace Combat 7?
They arent trying. This tech has existed for a while now. America created an AI controlled F-16 fighter jet that can beat a human pilot 100% of the time. Think about it. Humans have limits like G forces making you pass out. Fear and other emotions. The AI knows exactly the point when the wings will rip off due to excessive G forces. It has the memory of billions of simulated dogfights against every possible adversary. It knows exactly when to fire missiles in order to score a hit unlike humans. It can fire and track cannons from multiple kilometers further than humans even with computers helping us. Scary to think about but Human pilots wont exist in 50 years. Maybe you'll have 1 pilot in a jet guiding huge swarms of these jets but when it comes to dogfights and being a missile bus. No human can compete against a computer.

Therefore, an electromagnetic suppression warfare weapon that can cover the entire country will be more important. Electromagnetic suppression has a better effect on dealing with drones that rely on wireless satellite navigation and remote control. Therefore, electromagnetic suppression and air defense missiles are equally important, but for those who rely on For inertial navigation drones, electromagnetic suppression has little effect. In the future, if there are laser weapons or high-energy anti-personnel weapons, the problem of over-capacity attacks will be better solved.
Unfortunately for United Snakes regime China has their own BeiDou GPS system so..
electronic warfare is happening in Ukraine right now. But cover the whole country? Neither Russia or NATO are capable covering whole Ukraine. If covering USA or China entirely are nearly impossible. Taiwan is small enough, but its power generation may far to short for this.
I guess if you have a big enough satellite service monopoly and astronomically large amounts of available power supply your proposed plan would work, but unfortunately none of those apply to China
I don’t think that this planes need a remote control or remote connection if they’ve onboard navigation like a cruise missile.. and even if they are loosing their connection it’s easy to program them to just fly around until they are running out of fuel .. so yes then they’re not approaching their target but they’re still confusing radar operators
Electronic warfare is indiscriminate. Doing it also puts your own radars and aircraft out of commission.
Hi ! I love your Maps, would you mind sharing what software you used for this or do you have any useful tutorials to learn this ? Thank you ❤ for the great work
Mig 19 derivatives , the airworthy ones probably worth about 200K USD max (and I am being incredibly generous here, you buy in bulk probably cost about 50K USD a piece). Throw in another 10 K for payload , simple flight navigation and control. A sidewinder AIM 9 latest variant cost about 400K USD a piece pre covid. Now I won’t be surprised they are about a million each. If a proxy is buying them, they probably cost about 2 million including “support and maintenance”.
Great video and visuals. Editing wise, near the end there's a part where it directly repeats itself. Editing mistake?
awesome illustration with the animations the quality of the video is so good!
It’s a creative, initially cheap idea but most importantly it’s deceptive for an adversary. Wasting a million dollar missile on this aged jet may not be viable.
Exceptional production of decent weapons vs. decent production of exceptional weapons is literally what won WWII.
These drones can also be used in suicide drone missions

With ordnance changes these could swarm the American carrier forces, taking the hits meant for the anti-ship missiles from the Aegis ballistic defense systems mounted on the destroyers shadowing the carriers.
