    I'm glad Latvia wasn't completely snubbed by the juries. Their performance was one of the best in the semi for me - so energetic and engaging the entire way through. I'll never stop being disappointed they missed out on the final but I suppose there weren't many quirky televotes left once Norway, Moldova, and Ukraine ate up so many.

    I thought that Lithuania will get more points from juries than televote because she was so early in the running order, but it is not the case now :) . If she managed to get the same amount of jury points in the final she would be top 10, and that is against all odds :) she was 25th in odds when Final odds ended.

    Slovenia is just so... weird. It's not that their NF was even so bad, they had some good choices in there, but they always pick the most random things that def won't do well at ESC. I still believe some of the songs in their NF could actually have gone through (Luma especially felt like something that could have stood out).

    Hey Tom. Greetings from Greece. I have a fact for you. I'm a Dj in a gay bar here in Athens...and I have to tell you that Ronela's entry is the most favourite indeed and they dance to that song like crazy. The same as last year happened with Mata Hari. It's the type of music in these songs that makes us go crazy about them.

Both countries have big diasporas from Lithuania. Even in semis when they didn't qualify Ireland especially usually gives a high vote! Interesting!!! but not conclusive! nice analysis. Norway being overshadowed by Sweden - we are used to it (haha, only kidding here - love our Swedish neighbors, I follow Melfest, and I often vote for their entries in Eurovision)
    Our semi final result was lower than I expected, but at the same time also better with the juries. Really hoping NRK keeps up this trend, and we keep climbing up the results next year. Would love to see a potential winner in MGP that could score well with both juries and televote. It seemed like they really believed in Subwoolfer this year, I've never seen us put that much effort into a staging and choreography - and I hope they weren't discouraged by the jury result in the final. Just gotta get the completely right song.

      id love a new Norway win, its been too long. I think MGP this year was really amazing, ive got the most downloads from there.

    • @KylieWilson
      @KylieWilson Před 2 lety +3

      The problem for me is that NRK keep sending acts that are jury poison like Keiino, Tix and Subwoolfer. Sadly we’ll never know how Ulrikke could’ve done, I’m pretty sure she would’ve gotten top 10. They desperately need to stop thinking that gimmick = victory because it will NEVER work, and I’m saying this bc Norway are my fave Eurovision country and I also desperately want to see them win so seeing them with this very 2000s strategy is extremely frustrating for me.

    • @escrte
      @escrte Před 2 lety

      @@KylieWilson Exactly! I think Norway should consider having a jury again because afterall Eurovision is 50% jury 50% televote, so if you want to win, it's not enough with a fun televote song.

    • @lillecathrine
      @lillecathrine Před 2 lety

      @@escrte I'd much rather Norway and NRK keep experimenting and trying different things than adding juries back. Eurovision doesn't need all of it participants to add juries - that takes away the fun and the show part of it all. It gets boring if every year we were to send a standard ballad or pop song with nothing more to it that flops in televote - like our neighbors Sweden the past few years (Cornelia at least providing a bit more than they have recently, but I'd much rather have seen Sweden risk it with something like Medina). I'd much prefer we keep showing our culture (KEiiNO with joik) and the music that is actually popular here (TIX), rather than try to please juries and everyone else who can't enjoy some fun like with Subwoolfer that still has a good quality song with lots of time and effort put into the staging as well. Hopefully in 2023 or a future year we can find something that is a great mix for a winning entry. It's all about the right song - rest assured Norway will vote for a winner if we get one into MGP.

    • @lillecathrine
      @lillecathrine Před 2 lety

      @@KylieWilson Subwoolfer also got top 10. I don't care that the juries didn't like it. It was the most fun entry we have ever sent, and I much enjoyed the wolves even if you didn't. If we had sent Elsie, NorthKid, or Sofie - they were all probably in danger of not qualifying, and if they would have qualified - there is no way they'd beat Subwoolfers 10th place. I like that we aren't afraid to go for whatever we enjoy. In 2020, that was Ulrikke and surely she would have done well but likely not won. Like I said, all about the right song.

    I think Norway and Moldova took all the "joke" points, leaving nothing left for Latvia. "Joke" songs are often kids' favourites. Latvia's song wasn't very kid friendly, unlike Norway and Moldova. Not everyone is prepared to vote for the "joke" entries. So there is a limited amount of votes in the "joke" pot. It can be debated which song is a joke song or not. But the closest to that label in this semi were Norway, Moldova and Latvia.

    I am so in favour of juries Tom
    Anyone who lived through the ESC in the noughties, when it was 100% televote, remembers some totally shite winners of the contest.
    But the EBU have a nightmare ahead of themselves, to protect the integrity of the system. Im glad you highlighted the unusual results of the Greek Jury, as it almost feels as if the EBU has pointed the finger at certain countries and left clear anomalies elsewhere, totally alone.
    If anyone doesn't believe this, please look at the Spanish jury results in the final. The theory is a jury is made up of 5 individuals who rank the field 1st to last, with no consultation between each other and are totally impartial.....i know we don't live in a perfect world but some results stink to high heaven!
    Well done Tom, it's important to highlight some of the unsavoury data in a non-judgemental and non-xenophobic way, in order to shine a light on distortion of the voting system.
    It has gone beyond the traditional friendliness of countries voting for each other ( ie Greece/Cyprus, Moldova/Romania, Sweden/Denmark etc) and seems more sinister than ever before.

And young people probably being more eager to vote 20 times or use an app (I don't know, if it's available for this nf, probably not) and next to those High School students, there are also friends and relatives and ordinary people, who don't know them personally and just liked their song, that might have voted for them as well. So, 700 points advantage is easily done this way. Even if it was just a 4 year HS, but I think, their Schools go from 5th to 12th grade, so their amount of students might be about 700, maybe even larger than that.

      Plus Albania seemed more like a joke entry than Latvia, one could argue. And the no 2 spot. And the other joke songs soaked up all the spots and votes and were better joke songs. Plus many 11th and 12th positions. And positions in the bottom of the Top 10. With Albania the problem was the messy staging (if something like a staging even existed) too sexy, both outfit and choreography, she partially struggled vocally (also due to dancing too wild, I guess) and where's even the song, it seems as if it was mainly just instrumentals interrupted by random shout outs. At least she could have sung a line in the end of the song instead of having the last 10 to 15 seconds instrumental, it didn't have to be a vocal moment, but just something. This way it seemed to be unfinished. That's why none of them has qualified. Maybe next year.

    This has been the strangest ESC ever. As a positive, i think the song quality is the highest ever - and I mean ever. There were no bad songs in this final at all...On the downside, the failure of the kinetic sun will always leave this year as being "the contest that could have been" in the eyes of the fandom - plus the treatment of the fandom press/reactors, this was a really backwards step by the EBU. Sure, TikTok has a reach audience but the majority of ESC fans, or the general public, are probably not TikTok subscribers. I was pleasantly surprised at how many of my work colleagues actually watched the show this year - and really enjoyed it..
    Assessing the semi-finals as you've done is a logistical juggernaut, but you've done a great job Tom. For me Ronela failed because she tried to hard to be a Nicki Miaj type artist rather than being true to herself. The whole performance was too sexualised but felt really contrived and ingenuine.
    Maruis Bear had the curse of the Michael Rice black leather jacket. His styling was awful, period. Again, he looked like someone who was about to just wander off to the corner shop to buy bread and milk, not to appear in the grand final...
    Latvia. How much impact did the (albeit silent) "P" word have on voting. Y'know, I sort of wonder if there is a difference between 13 year old boys and men of their own age thinking it's fun to say that word out loud in public and think it's either funny or socially acceptable? I'm in no way a prude but there are times and places, I can come out with the least-inappropriate chat imaginable - but y'know, this is a worldwide TV, family show event...

None of the dancing and flag waving we love and have become accustomed to in recent years...I feel so sorry for anyone who attended their first ever live ESC this year based on what they've watched online over the past 10 years or so - a completely seated audience, distanced from the performers,. To me it just didn't sit comfortably with how I view the contest nowadays - it kinda took me back to the 70s or 80s with shows in theatres with stuffy audiences - a completely seated audience, distanced from the performers.

Netherlands was my second favourite after the semi, I love everything about her. Her song is authentic, she has a very strong message that I can relate to and the song is just beautiful. I was shocked about Australia's vocals and I thought he would get more televotes too. I was even more surprised that Azerbaijan got zero points in the semi-final. I understand that the song isn't to everyone's taste, but zero points from the public is very shocking. The song wasn't that bad. In fact, Azerbaijan was one of my favourites in the second semi final, so it's not like people hated it. I don't understand the reasoning behind zero points.
    I can say the similar thing about Switzerland. I thought that the performance was great, I really liked it, he has a very good voice, but I also really liked all the beautiful effects on the stage as well as the artist's message in the song and his authenticity. He was definitely better than some of the other contestants in the semi. Again, maybe the song isn't to everyone's taste or maybe people can't connect with it, but the artist does not deserve the unnecessary hate. The fact that this artist got bullied online shows what kind of awful people are voting in the contest, but it also supports the argument that we need to keep the Juries. So based on this, you can say that this year people have been very very harsh and critical towards more slow tempo songs and we need the Juries to keep these songs in the contest, so the argument for Juries penalising upbeat songs is the same as the argument that the public is penalising beautiful slow tempo songs.
    Regarding semi final 1 results, people forget that Albania was first in the running order, so this will always lower your chances of qualification. I simply think that people almost forgot about her performance and it didn't leave as much of an impact. Regarding Latvia, I simply couldn't connect the artists with the song. No offence for any of the artists, but I just thought that they came off a little bit too arrogant and in your face. People were not having fun or at least I wasn't. So maybe it's a bit less about the song, but more about the performers themselves. Maybe they could've also done something about the staging to elevate the performance, because the public just didn't feel it.

    I think in terms of Latvia attracting talent to their NF, I can name three big name acts that I think could pick interest back up: Dons, The Sound Poets and Carnival Youth (the latter of which funnily enough is the band of the son of Renars from Brainstorm) but I worry that the big names are too scared to enter. The aforementioned Dons shockingly lost the 2014 NF to Cake To Bake despite being by far the biggest singer in Latvia and with a massively acclaimed song to boot, and another big name act, Triana Park, came last in the semi in 2017, and I worry that might have put a lot of them off. I have a soft spot for Latvia, they were my #1 in 2016 and it’s sad to see them back in their suck period.

    I don't know how to explain anomalies in the televotes. Other than if whatever company collects the televotes are cheating. I am not sure how televotes are collected. I assume the first people that see the tele scores are from that country's tele company. Then those numbers get sent to the verifying company? So before the numbers get sent to the verifiers it would be possible to change the scores.
    As for Iceland, that song was probably popular among other Nordic people. It was my favourite Nordic song this year, making it into my own top 10. Being Nordic myself I only had Iceland from the Nordics in my top 10. It did get points from non-Nordic countries too though. Not sure how much of that was diaspora voting.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před 2 lety +1

      i think the televotes are more secure, because the larger quantity of votes makes rigging harder. its still possible with buying lots of SIM cards in small countries, and i think that works better in the semis as theres less people voting as well.
      they made some changes cos some people were quite obviously cheating with sim cards, the stories are out there for anyone to google. thats one of the reasons they got rid of the San MArino televote. the czechia televote had a reputation for being easy to rig as well cos the numbers were low

Also that may explain the 12 pts from Greece to Albania which has a lot of Albanians living there. However, now that we have the EBU statement t on jury rigging, is it possible there were countries involved in SF1 that just weren’t caught doing the same thing? (Bulgaria and Greece, hmm)

    Connecting to why Latvia didn’t do so well as everyone predicted, i tried to think as a regular eurovision viewer and wondered if maybe the lyrics played a critical role. Because the topic is so non sense, to regular viewers. They will not spend time looking up or questioning “why is this lyric so crazy”. It’s a hit or a miss. Eurofans know the lyrics have layers and double meaning, however, regular viewer only sees/ hears ‘eat your salad” and probably immediately thinks about the lecture his doctor gave him because of higher weight or cholesterol. I think if lyrics were more relatable to the music, like for example Moldova, with “hey ho, let’s go, folkore and rock and roll” of if they would have sang it in Latvian, with a different title and where the viewer could connect the energy of the song with the lyrics, they would have done better.

    There was a cocky smugness in the Latvia performance, but the fact that the Slovenia male band also flopped maybe tells us that semi-final viewers are not into those type of performers or songs. I personally would be worried if Jurors were voting big for a song like Moldova's. I don't want to hate on the song, but there are probably dozen's of bands throughout Europe who could easily write or perform such a song at a local wedding or shindig. However it is simply too basic, even for the ESC.

    Am I the only who is not surprised that Lithuania did so much better than Latvia ?? I honestly thought there was no comparison between the two. No shade towards Latvia cause I normally like their entries (yes Triana Park included) but I thought this year was just messy, too much going on on stage and the song just gave me the impression that someone woke up one morning and thought…….so what’s trendy ?…..and what followed was an average song with a confusing message about veganism, recycling and eating “you know what”……just my humble opinion obviously. You are all free to disagree.
    As for the Albanian vote……it was pretty clear that they knew their entry was borderlone, and that it will be down to a few votes. So they went for what seemed like the weakest entry. There were a few examples of those on the final night on Saturday too. Pity really but hey it’s all subjective so tactical voting is impossible to prove ultimately.

    In my opinion the Latvian song had three big problems: 1.the sound was very dated (it sounds like something from the early 2000s). 2. You had to be able to speak english in order to understand the message of the song (trully great songs are capable of transmiting their message even if you don't speak the language, see Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, Lithuania etc). 3. Even if you speak english, the ,,joke'' was very lame and childish, which is great for TikTok but not so great for Eurovision.
