Eurovision: Top 100 Biggest Differences between Jury and Televote (by average points)
Vložit
- čas přidán 19. 05. 2023
- With the discourse around Jury vs Televote, I thought I'd check which entries were the most polarising, forcing the biggest disagreements between the jury and the public vote! I went all the way back to 2009 and calculated the average points out of 12 given to each entry by both voting entities and here is the top 100! By using the average, I wanted to account for the different numbers of participants each year. As EBU has not released the split points for 2013, that year's entries were not included.
Enjoy and let me know what you think!

This is a correction to yesterday's video. It was pointed out to me that the ROW vote was not taken into account for the televote average of 2023. I apologise!
Over the next few days, I'll also be updating some of my past videos with the class of 2023, so stay tuned!
Let me know what you think in the comments below! Don't forget to like and subscribe for more Eurovision content!
Why not include ROW for the televoto average of 2023?
@@LianRodriguezTorres This video includes the ROW. I uploaded a video before this one where I typed my formulas wrong and it didn't change the calculation for this year, but this video is okay.
Jacques Houdek "My friend"?
im still mad about Grande Amore and expect me to forever be mad about Cha Cha Cha too!
you act like loreen got 2 points from the public…
@@kyliebrown4230 no never did. But she didn’t won the public vote. This is simply a fact. And she didn’t got the 12 points from any country from the publicy Jere got 18
I wouldn't mind the juries if they'd favor artsy, ethnic songs like this year's Spain, Czechia and Serbia. But most of the entries that were favored by jury are just boring, disposable pop songs. What's the use of the juries again?
Poland would've got 8th place if juries were gone, think about that
Juries mostly pay attention to the vocal talent of the singers rather than the songs. I understand why they care about that, but since it is a song contest and not a vocalist contest (everyone is already a signed artist so it's not like they're trying to prove that) it does often feel unlike the spirit of the event.
I notice that often the juries prefer more conventional radio songs, whereas the public much more favors interesting stuff. Frankly I wish we did away with the jury votes - I don't want a bunch of pretentious music nerds deciding who wins, it should be the people's favorite!
I still can't forgive the jury for Poland 2016, Finland 2023, Moldova 2017, Norway 2023, Ukraine 2021...but especially for POLAND 2016
Finland did really well thougj
Finland still came fourth in the juries, Norway 2019 was robbed by the juries beyond comprehension
@@willmrgn Norway 2019 still got much less televotes than Finland 2023, so definitely weren't robbed "more", plus Keiino's song plagiarized Finland's entry 2018, "Monsters", clearly the same chorus, so I'm not sure they deserved even that.
Poland 2016 is rotted
@@beandrag9019 To each their own
I notice a pattern of jury favored songs being mostly forgotten ones and audience favorites are the ones we remember. Juries don't have the same taste as audience, nobody is going to listen to song that's musically brilliant and perfect if it isn't fun and catchy too and juries don't give points for being catchy.
somwe of the jurries favourite were not even that good quality..
@@MichaelSpengler I'd say most of them ;)
I bet most those so called juries don't even remember the songs they awarded, either
it;s logical, if something wasn't precious for the people, they did not vote for it and it is forggetten. simple. But Austria 2023 favourited by jury and not tele? This is not was I have seen
@@thewolter9703 Austria 2023 was hyped by the fandom because of the message and the great production behind it. But on the actual stage, it fell flat and forgettable, and the running order didn't help. I don't think anyone outside the fandom got the idea. The girls came across as wannabe quirky and sounded floppy. The outfits were meh, and the staging was pointless. So much for creativity
Italy 2023 has made me wonder which entries have the smallest between jury and televote aka entries where jury and televote agreed and gave similar points to it, since Marco has 176 jury vote and 174 televote which made the gap between the 2 scores to be 2 points apart, I wonder which entries have the similar gap like it. Some little birds told me if that list ever happened, UK 2021 would be on the top spot lol (0 jury vote and 0 televote).
Iirc, 4 songs have received the exact same amount of points from jury & televote:
UK 2021: 0+0
Germany 2017: 3+3
Iceland 2022: 10+10
Finland 2018: 23+23
lmaooo not uk finally coming 1st in a esc list after all 💀
you really came for the uk like that huh😭😭
For another similar which comes to my mind, France 2021 got a 3 points difference (248 juries 251 televote)
@@fddfsddfs I think Chanel was 3 points apart too (228 tele, 231 juries).
I love most of the televote favorites here!
Juries: with very few exceptions, greatly prefers ballads, powerful female voices, and Sweden
Public: is it a soft ballad? Hardcore techno/EDM? Glam metal? Folk punk/rap? Straight up opera? You will never know. The paths of the televote are a mysterious multitude
Well, jury votes are to me much more mysterious ;D As most of the time I really don't get what they see in an entry...
@@elvinam888 they see the geography of the country
Yes, of course the public has a more varied taste, they're millions of people. That's why the winner should be decided by the public only.
@@sk70091 Disagree. The have done this thing like around 2000-2008 something, and Eurovision during that time is a total joke.
@@theentitledsiriowlsx A total joke? Because entries you personally didn't like did better than you would have liked?
What did the juries see in Sweden 2018 11:01 like seriosuly
It seems to be enough just that it's Sweden, unfortunately. :( They could send someone reading the telephone directory aloud, or alternatively farting on stage (as someone suggested), and still get loads of jury points...
@@florenna 😂😂 You're so right!!
They saw the swedish flag. That's enough for them.
@@florenna Finally people are realizing that! Sweden has sent some medicore songs that would not make it to finals if it would've come from any other country, but it's Sweden so it always gets to finals.
I'm from Finland so all the swedes will say I'm just bitter, but it has happen in past years and you could see there was many swedish songs getting much higher jury points than audience points so there is a pattern.
Ask Duncan Laurence. It's his favorite Eurovision song of all time. 🤔🤔
Also interested idea: What if juries and televoting gave 0-25 points (1 place gets 25 points, 2 place gets 24 and so on).
Also try it with rankings of every jurors. You will be shocked with results
Il Volo ❤❤❤
Anyone else caught the pattern of jury overrating Swedish song and televote saving us?
not in 2011
Yes, there very obviously is a pattern. :( Thats why the outcry now.
I hate it!!!
Not as much as I am seing Malta, austria, Australia getting punked by televoters
@@renemortensen5028 Because ther songs are mostly not good... At least in recent years. Forgettable and bland (sorry).
Yeah no wonder why sweden has won so many times. Public doesn’t favor them but the jury has fell in love with sweden
Not sure it's love, just favouritism 😉
Loreen, Sweden, came second to finland this year when we count the points from the tele vote.
most of Sweden songs were very good though , and you can still hear them on the radio after 5 years
Yeah, there's something wrong when you see all the Swedish entries on the "Most points by juries" and "Biggest differences between jury and televote" lists.
@@mariomm9080 Then your definition of "very good" is very different from mine, and many people's.
incredible top 3 tho
I like sooo many songs that were underrated by jury.
Poland 'color of my love' is still in my heart
This is crazy how tv voters gave cha cha cha in average more than 10 points and it still didn’t win. Just crazy
What I notice is that a lot of the songs in favour of the televote are much more memorable AND/OR better than the ones in favour of the jury vote. The jury should have less power, let the people decide.
Yes, more memorable and thus better quality :) Since some people seem to equate quality with boring (as that's what juries favour, TBH), which shouldn't be the case.
A 70/30 split, or at the end of the jury vote cut the points in half.
@@florenna There are also good quality songs that weren't popular with the jury at all. City Lights was top notch! Sergey Lazarav had 2 absolute bangers with "Scream" and "You are the only one". 50/50 vote is just too much. 30/70 would be much fairer.
@@Muse4Games Yes, I nearly always prefer televote songs, so those already *are* quality to me ;) I'm not sure I could point out a single one is this list that was a televote favourite that I'd hate. (Though, I admit I'm not a big fan of those Russian songs, but don't hate them either.) But, like I said, *some* seem to equate "quality" with what I see as boring, and use that as defense why we "need" juries, but I don't agree with that at all. :)
I dunno, I'm really digging a lot of jury-friendly songs that televote robbed tbh. Even saved some of my all-time faves from nq'ing a couple of times. Eurovision is not all about silly memorable tunes.
So Keiino was robbed too.... I never realized that they got only 40 (!!!) points from the jury, wow! Alessandra did almost as bad with only 52 jury points. Why isn't Norway getting any jurylove?
Well in this list Norway has got more jury than televotes in 2015, for example ;)
Alessandra and keiino had bad jury performances(keiino for technical reasons), Norway also get a lot of jury points when they send good entries that have good performances in the jury final
because they’re dated campy pop that would never play on the radio. + poor jury performances. be serious for a second
@@florennaand in 2017
@@freshlypainted As if Sweden doesn't send dated campy pop lol (I'm Swedish fyi before you start hurling slurs at me)
Am I a fan of jury? Absofuckinglutely not. But I don't think we should abolish it. Jury vote should amount to 30% of total points.
I'm starting to feel even that is too much power... Especially after watching this list :(
Lovely, so eurovision will just be about catchy circus/meme songs.
@@perkz3290 You're a troll. What's wrong with catchy? That's what songs in ESC *should* be. Unlike these ultra-boring jury winners now. And this "circus/meme" thing is getting really old & tired now.... That's what you say when people love another entry besides yours, and you can't think of any other way of insulting it, it seems 🤣
@@florenna Honestly I hope they remove the jury so this competition can die and just see all of you be surprised when it happens.
@@perkz3290like in 2015 you mean? When the juries chose heroes (very serious and classy song) over a circus song as grande amore which won the televote?
The only time I actually liked q jury favorite was with Jamala and 1944. All other times its the televote that is the best.
Jamala actually got more televotes than jury votes, check again! :) (I loved it too.)
@florenna not only that but jamala was 2nd place with both the jury and televote. Jury had Dami Im as their 1st place and the public had Sergey. So neither group got their first pick that year lol 😁
Was there Eurovision in 1944 ???
@@Alex-yr4ib так песня Джамалы называлась, а год был 2016
@@frste26 Well, to me Jamala was clearly the most deserving by far of these 3, so that year the result was right :) (Russia always got loads televotes due to diaspora, so that's not really a comparable case to e.g. this year.)
My bet is that Europapa by Joost will also have a big jury/televote difference.
The juries hate fun way too much.. :(
Austria 2023 is another great reason for the jury to exist-the public seems to completely forget about songs that are early in the running order. I still can’t get over how few televotes they got this year with a song crafted for the televote.
I mean it's unfortunate but you listen and watch 26 acts, of course most of the times a song or two will always be forgotten in the short span of voting in favour of 4 to 5 songs they loved the most. Like Slovenia and France this year. The juries do balance it most of the times, but they need to be nerfed a bit. Something like a 70/30 split or maybe the overall jury points the countries take get cut in half in the end, idk...
TBH I just think the live performance was not great. I didn't like the song anyways, but my friend says he liked the studio version and then thought the live version was quite weak by comparison. I reckon France last year had a similar problem, except France just straight up needed more practice singing.
it's possible it just felt short of the top 10 in many countries. If they ranked 11th or 12th for example, they don't get any points. I think that's what happened with Austria, Australia, potentially France and Slovenia. Especially with Australia that ended up winning their semi, it was such a surprise to see them get so few televote points.
Drop the "vote 20 times Thing". One per artist should suffice.
They were definitely a top 10 for me... unfortunately, I could vote 5 times, so I had to decide who I wanted to see win or at the very least shine, and Austria unfortunately didn't make the cut.
The biggest problem of jury - they almost always overrated Sweden.
Sure but the reason for this is very simple. The International esc jury votes in the melody festival (50% are jury votes) and the winner of the Melodifestival gets to represent Sweden in Esc. Therefore Sweden will almost always submit a song that the jury likes. It is as simple as that.
Surely this video proves that if you want the public to watch and be involved... The jury votea have to go
Christ Sweden get wayyyyy too much
They get away with too much crap 🤔🤔
Did olanyone notice that the juries always push Sweden? The last 2 wins wouldn't also happened if they don't push Sweden soooo hard and the runner-up so down. That's kinda unfair!
Yes, more than unfair! Which is why there now is the public outcry.
Yeah, i wonder why the eurovision that has basically been remodeled after Melodifestivalen and whose big shot is Swedish would favor Sweden... 🤔🤔🧐🧐
It's been going on since the 70's
Tbh as a Swede I completely agree. We've had some decent songs but we often get higher scores than we deserve - and I'm really pissed that we won 2023! Finland totally deserved it, they were the people's favorite. And while I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any means, I do have suspicions that juries especially pushed us to win this year so that we can host 2024 for the 50 year anniversary of ABBA's win with Waterloo in 1974. Utter bullshit regardless, the live audience was audibly chanting for Käärijä during the scoring, we had no right to claim that win.
@@KreeZafi но песня у Лорин потрясающе красивая!
Why juries favourite Sweden Austra Malta . Some song so boring . Now I understand why Malta was 2d and 3d when public couldn't vote. And Poland was lasts in jury twice with ballad and folklore songs so beautiful.
Last year Moldova was last in every predictions and jury votes but was 2d in televoting.
People likes something with emotions or catchy funny songs like this year Finland . Why they choose to win second time Sweden when every country in televoting wanted Finland to win . It has to be changed. Few people can't decide who will win
Well, there should be 2 categories. One where "pros" vote and other where people vote. I am sure latter one is what everyone wants to win and what really matters.
There already is the 2 categories, kind of, and thus we can easily see what people loved and what jury liked...
I basically remember only the ones that had a bigger televote score, that tells something, eh?
You always know which won which votes, what's your problem? Nobody cares which place got the song which You liked! Why the place in the table is so important for You?
Thought I’d hate the jury votes, but Gustaph, S10 & (Spain’s) Blanca were all incredible and I can’t believe jury votes were kinder to them than the audience.
Jury loves Sweeden
Poland 2016 is the biggest robeery in eurovision history
I wish there was only a televoting
jury must canceled eurovision its a show for fans
Szpak(2016 Poland) and Kaiino(2019 Norway) were definately robbed.
Moldova could have of been top 2 in 2022 if there weren't those stupid Jury votes
I think Israel 2024 broke the record with 271 points difference, I just don't know where to find the avarage jury and televote votes
People love complaining about jury favouring Sweden when Australia is clearly the country that falls back on jury vote the most.
Juries always favoring sweden and underrating finland and norway soo unfair
Watching this, *I realize even more than before how much more I prefer the songs that received more televotes than jury,* and how much I dislike the jury pets, ie. those that got more jury votes than televotes 😔 Many of the ones loved by televote, OTOH, are among my favourites ever. Abolish juries and bring back all televote, I say!! (The *only* instances here that I really like a song that got more jury votes than televotes are Finland 2014, but we all know Finland is normally never a jury pet, Slovenia 2011 and France 2009.)
Funny. I feel the opposite
@@renemortensen5028 Sorry to hear that, maybe you like boring & bland then? ;) (Or did you post that just to be a contrarian? ;)) I prefer songs that actually make me *feel* something, be it joy, energy, happiness, something poignant, sadness, even anger for some injustice, etc... The only thing those jury faves usually make me feel is irritation. Or boredness.
Yeah, I just commented the same thing! I barely remember any of the songs that were favored by the juries. 🤔🤔
@@florenna No. Only televote makes it more worse and it doesn't change anything, repeating the same mistake in 2000s. Which is again used by countries for their political agenda.

I would prefer NO JURY Vote!
The people are the real Jury!

POV: Israel 2024
Juries love corporate pop.
Actually, from reading the comment section, I think that I have a pretty different taste for music than other, in fact (most of the time) I prefer songs that got higher points by juries than by televote, like Greece 2022, Spain 2012, Italy 2012, Austria 2023 and many others.
+ Croatia 2024 🥲
Keiino having the most difference (excluding ukraine 2022) is so sad 😭
Thank god we have the juries...
Yeah so that Sween can always end up high, despite sending crap... 🙄 As that seems to be the only reason for juries existing...
Yes god forbid the public was actually allowed to choose their own winner
Israel 2024 would top the list with a difference of 7.28528528529 (Ukraine was 6.333 for comparison). Kiieno also had the largest difference (251), but Israel 2024 is 271.
Moldova 2017 and Poland 2016 were the worst judge’s decisions, they were robbed. However, overall for me it’s a 50-50 split between supporting judges votes compared to the public.
The public often supports acts with mediocre songs but great visual effects/dancing/kitschy acts. The public also unfairly judges most performances from Australia.
Don't forget Russia 2016 and Turkiye 2010
This video just proves to me how much we need juries.. so many great songs were just demolished by televote. But juries should be punished for clear neighbor votes. And I would be fine if they made the voting ratio is 60:40 for televote.
Honestly, most songs I prefer on the list got more points from the jury than the televoting.
And for me it's the exact opposite.
The only song that is like that is Austria 2023 for me. But I think it's because they went first and their live performance is not as catchy as their studio version and they opened the show so that didn't play in their favour at all
@@alexdelaloire8739 Yeah, that music video is damned good! A lot of ESC experts actually commented that they would've wanted the staging to look more like the video. They thought that the staging was too slick... but I liked it, but I'm no expert...
@@alexdelaloire8739 Austria 2023 was so good. But you're right that the official video and recorded song were so much better than the live performance they did.
So basically jury likes boring ballads and stylistically old songs because they're old and boring people.
ThePeaceAround has analysed jury composition and expertise. Median age 49 years old, 60% pop music professionals. Not a single rapper or metal rock representative, just a handful of ethnical musicians.
Hmm, age doesn't equal boringness necessarily, many people over 60 love rock & metal, at least in my country, while many young people have really boring taste nowadays (Tiktok pop etc.)!
This year both televote and jury were pretty much shit.... (there were exceptions, but very few)

This list makes me realize that the jury is better than the televote
Nah
I mean tbf besides the fact that they always favor Sweden (and sometimes Italy), the jury, for most of the time, has saved a lot of entries from failing due to them flopping hard with the televote. Without them we wouldn't get a proper production as we're having now and the contest might still be as bad as the 2000s where the jury was omitted.

@@quangminhtran2916 or sweden just makes good songs? is it really that hard to believe?
@@leokab4841 both can be true. Sweden makes good songs (which is why they place well overall), AND the jury tends to favor Sweden (which is why their jury score is often higher than their televote score). Australia and Israel seem to have a similar trend
I didn’t see the same outrage in 2019 when Duncan won because Keiino didn’t get many jury votes. Even bigger difference than Kaarija. Y’all just like to pick and choose who to hate on.
No, *you* just don't get the point why people are upset now - mainly because Käärijä got the biggest televote amount ever, much more than any Keiino, and yet it still wasn't enough to win, because Sweden got an unreasonable amount jury votes, with biggest difference to 2nd placer.) Keiino got much less televotes than Finland 2023, so definitely weren't robbed "more". Plus Keiino's song actually plagiarized Finland's entry 2018, "Monsters", clearly the same chorus, so I'm not sure they deserved even that.

besides: that year sweden didn't win - we don't "pick and choose who to hate" ... we hate sweden, but we hate sweden because of the jurys! there is just a difference between "people's favourite lost to sweden cause of jurys" and "people's favourite lost to a well acceptable song you need to accept that it got more points"
@@florenna not "ever" - there's still and there will be always kalush orchestra ...

So the jury chooses quality and the people chooses weirdness. So a song that has the best mix of both has the greatest chance of winning. Just having one and not the other usualy isn't enough to win as Cha Cha Cha proved. Loreen had the quality but also enough weirdness to win hehe.
Thats atleast what i get from this list. So the people saying that we should leave all the power in peoples hands.... Please god no! We need both.
Well they did leave all the power to the public between 1998 and 2008 and look what the contest has turned out during that time lol, the jury was brought back in 2009 and the quality has improved drastically. The people always vote for the weirdest, most ridiculous entries and place them really high. Since the jury came back, the winners in 2016 and 2019 didn't win either the jury vote or the televote, they just happened to earn the most combined points and won their years. If one of the voting gone, there would've been different winners. If the contest was still televote-only, Russia and Norway would've been the winners in 2016 and 2019, respectively and if it was jury-only, Australia and North Macedonia would've been the winners. It's crazy just to think about it.
Your comment is quite insulting, as you seem the have assumed the power to yourself alone to define what is "quality" and what is "weirdness"... Other people will disagree! Like IMO, Loreen didn't have either (unless you equate "quality" with "boring"), and Cha Cha Cha had *both,* most definitely.
@@quangminhtran2916 Actually the televote years were the golden age of Eurovision, IMO! Well, after 2002 anyway (can't say I like 2001 and 2002 winners much). I don't know why people keep repeating that myth that televote era was bad, it's been repeated so much that some have started to believe it's the truth, which happens after enough repeats, even though it isn't.
people also choose quality - are you saying that the televote winners of the last few years weren't quality songs?

@@tiny_lebowski I'm afraid that's exactly what he's saying. :( And I don't agree at all.
I always have a laugh when I see people crying about "cha cha cha"... LOL 🤣
As a Pole, I remember 2016 (TOP 8 here), jury: 7, people: 222.
Also TOP 5 almost the same BS as Poland 2016, and ppl cry about Finland!? "cha cha cha" has almost 1/3 of points from JURY! 😂
I raged in 2016, Poland was my favourite that year and it only got 7 from the jusry, I didn't understand their choice at all
@Damian Boj People cry about Finland not because of the amount of jury points per se, but because it was a huge televote winner with biggest amount of televotes in history!! (Besides Ukraine last year, but not really comparable here.) And still juries blocked Finland from winning, that's the great injustice here!! So please study matters a bit before making such comments. Btw, I don't even remember Poland 2016 (though I do 2014, that one was good), so it doesn't seem to have been a very memorable entry...
Does it even matter who wins the contest? I didn't vote at all - I enjoyed the show and some of the songs were great but no way am I spending my hard-earned money on a stupid contest... Don't you think it's a waste of your money, just think about it..
Ehem, as long as there is any contest at all, of course it matters, as do all other placements. Don't think anyone would seriously ask the same about FIFA World Cup for example, "does it matter who wins?", so why about Eurovision? 🤔Odd.
@@elvinam888 Well, hard for me to answer because I don't watch sports and I have exactly the same opinion - doesn't matter who wins, and unless someone I know is participating in a contest, it really doesn't matter to me who wins. I just enjoy watching the show they organize but I don't get too emotional, I don't care that my favorite song didn't win and I didn't waste my money on voting for random people singing..
I've thought it as a fun thing to do and I usually vote for the ones I like, normally about 3-6 different entries. After this year though I decided never to vote again. I'm so bored with the juries' taste and how they force the winners. Let them chose the winners then and I'll just watch and not participate.
@@marsukarhu9477 Exactly! What is the point of voting if it is not even up to us, the viewers, to decide who wins (otherwise Finald would have won). You can vote and still, the jury decides. Respect your money, you have no influence over who is going to be the winner, please buy something important, something nice, or donate the money, don't waste it on stupid contests. You're just making certain people rich and what for really?
@@agpoland3632 Agree that not much point in voting if it won't affect the result (hopefully this will change), but that doesn't in any way mean that who wins wouldn't matter! Those are two completely different things.
