Eurovision - Biggest Disagreements between Jury and Televoters in One Country 2014 - 2021 in Finals

  • Hi everyone! As we know, since 2013 Eurovision uses the voting system where we know the juries' and televoters' tops 26 in finals (or 24/25/27). Well, we don't know the detailed results of 2013 but we do know them for years from 2014 to 2021 all the way. So, I decided to collect a little statistics: what were the biggest discrepancies between the jury and televote places from one country in finals? It turned out to be a top 26 (what a coincidence!) of differences of 23, 24 and 25 places. Differences of 26 places do not exist and with differences of 22 places or lower the video would've been too long and uninteresting. Enjoy!

    I think the reason why there's such a huge difference for Michal Szpak - Colour of your life between the Jury and Televote from Sweden is because of my aunt. I remember her hogging all of our phones to vote for him because he was and I quote "the most beautiful man" she had ever seen. Our phone bills that month were HIGH but she paid us back

Always there are some strange decisions done by them. Poland 2016, Norway 2019, Ukraine 2021, Moldova 2022 and etc... All those who voted for them think they did something nice and their moral boost got injected 😂😂😂

    Whichever jury you are - you just can't leave Michal Szpak in 23rd-25th position. Like, what exactly was their problem with this performance to leave him almost rock bottom? For his vocals alone you should put him top15 at least + staging was pretty nice. Don't think that someone expected him to jump around and make explosions with such a ballad.

    • @tomaszskowronski1406
      @tomaszskowronski1406 Před 11 měsíci +8

      i have a theory and it's not a nice one- Juries tend to snub diaspora countries- a lot of televotes for Poland are actually Poles living abroad. Our entries usually do better than they should so a lot of jurors want to offset it so their own contestant has a higher ranking. Jurors aren't and weren't about choosing the actual best song, they're about politics and calculation. Problem is that overcorrection usually ends up costing the song way more than the diaspora vote adds- it's basically UK, Irleand, some Germany, maybe Sweden, but pretty much all of the juries snub it. The fact that our national tv encourages the practice desn't help (yeah, we hate them too)
      The thing is- diaspora vote might not even be that much of a factor. Definitely some are doing it, but enough to swing an entire country to 12 points? i highly doubt it. People in those countries actually like our stuff, might be to the fact that people in countries with lots of our immigrants feel closer to poles as they deal with them daily, and on the general scale of thing's- we're not the worst people around. maybe not the best, but not the worst either. so it might get some "hey, i recognise them" points. There's no way to check that though, so butthurt people always assume the worst- it's not that anyone likes us, ever, it's always the fault of diaspora voting, no matter the song

      @@tomaszskowronski1406 You are right that certain countries will benefit from televoting due to diaspora. As for whether it can have a major effect to swing votes, I have noticed just how much here in the UK, the televotes favour Lithuania. Looking at the statistics for televoting, since 2013 we have had 14 opportunities to vote for Lithuania. We have given them 12 points eleven times, 10 points twice and we gave them 7 points once. That's a total of 159 points out of 168 possible. Although Lithuania can send some really good songs, you can't say that they will always be the best every year. I'm surprised at how much our results sway towards Lithuania because, like you, I wouldn't have thought any community would be able to have such an impact, but it obviously can.

    • @Beckford4000
      @Beckford4000 Před 2 lety +192

      Completely disagree. The jury is there to counter the Bloc/diaspora voting. Why did Ireland give 12 points to Lithuania several years running? Why does the Czech Rep give 12 to Russia/Ukraine/Armenia regularly? Why did Turkey used to get 12 EVERY year from Germany, why did Poland get high votes from the UK every year? It's about diaspora, this doesn't mean Germans loved the Turkish song every year, it means Turkish-Germans were voting en masse for Turkey, same with the Poles in Britain, the Russians in Czech Republic. It became so utterly predictable. Hence bringing in the juries again. The juries help songs that wouldn't get so many votes, for example, these days songs in the first half are largely forgotten by the public, so the jury ensures there's a balance of votes given across all entries in the final. The public are all "ooh something shiny" meaning they're easily pleased by something visual later in the running order rather than appreciating songs for their musical merit, that's the job of the jury. It brings balance.

Since 2016, 11th-26th places mean nothing, we just have 2 separate sets of points, to jury 1st-10th and for televote 1st-10th. Now it's impossible to vote strategically like that, thankfully)

      I agree that the jury can be biased against upbeat songs, but the concept of a jury makes sense. If we didn't have them, we'd have the opposite problem where only fast zany songs can win. Why should ESC be fun party time? A lot of the slow ballads that enter are good and should be appreciated. I agree that the jury picks shitty ballads over good dance music, but if we didn't have that balance, ESC would quickly become a clown contest, where only the goofiest/quirkiest songs have a chance. And that's no good either. Why bother training to master your vocals and write a beautiful melody if you're just gonna get outvoted for someone who clucks like a chicken? It brings balance to the fact that average tele voters don't understand or recognise just how impressive some of these contestants are and they deserve to have recognition for their skill and performance. Most of the time tele voters vote for outside reasons, maybe politics, maybe the artists stance on LGBTQ+ matters, a good example would be Maneskin- I know a lot of people who like them base off of their sexuality and expression and the fact they already had a following. Which is totally fine and I love Maneskin but it is still a singing competition so acts that have just as good or even better abilities in general but maybe are less outspoken on politics or are from a less liked country should still be able to get the recognition they deserve and it will almost always come from the jury. Plus they brought the Jury votes in because people were clearly just voting for their neighbours. But I agree the voting needs tweaking.

    Watching this got me thinking about the controversy with the jury and televote disagreements (like what happened with this years winner). As I see it the jury's are usually good at giving points to songs with quality (song technique, overall show etc) but suffer from political bias. The televote is good at giving points to songs with feeling, personality and uniqueness but suffer from being superficial and susceptible to peer pressure (looks, popularity). Therefore I heartily agree that the decision to use both was a smart move, even though many disagree with this years winner. My personal favourite is Finland, like many others, but the quality of Swedens entry is objectively better. Overall, Sweden deserved the win, and Finland deserved the attention for a solid second place.

    Imo the juries are too biased by all the info they are stuffed with in the days/weeks before the actual ESC. They get to know the performers and listen to the songs being performed live at various events. That makes them see the whole competition very different from the average viewer.
    They also cast their votes based off of the last rehearsals (at least in germany) so a really good (or bad) performance on the day it counts doesn't influence their votings anymore.
    Also our jury never represents the usual ESC addict, they always chose some music journalists, singers and especially some that think of themselves they are very 'deep' (but are just entitled). And that attitude is reflected in the votes. It's not supposed to be fun, it always has to have deeper meaning and like... be sophisticated maybe. It's ridiculous.
    The jury voting were supposed to even out some strong connections between neighbours initially, but if you look at how they actually vote... they mostly prefer their close neighbours / allies just as much as anyone else would. I think we should just get rid of that. Have the audience vote on the day of the semi- / finale and that's it.
    If you take a look back at the winners from the last years, some friendly neighbour votes may bring you into top 10, top 5 even, but the WINNER is usually a song that hits a nerv / the right tone and is done well. Really no need to have some biased 'music experts' scuffing the competition.

    We have to accept, that there are rules that will tell the winner of the contest. But especially after Loreen/Käärijä -final, people want change more than ever. Jury doesn't know anything, what voters would like to hear. They think more professionally, but I guess that regular listeners are them, for whom the music should be primarly offered. Voters loved Käärijä, but Loreen made technically so perfect song, and that gave her so huge gap to next one in jury votes. But voters almost made Käärijä winner anyways. My opinion is, that jury shouldn't have as much power to vote as millions of televoters. Or otherwise, Eurovision song contest stays as professional competition, where only professional musicians compose technically high quality song for professional judges. But it means, that contestants don't make their own thing anymore, they try to make perfect song only for jury. Listeners most likely don't want to hear that kind of music.

      This is what gets me too. With the difference between the two voting groups being so big, every country essentially has to choose if they want to make a jury favourite or a public favourite, which isn't the intention of the competition, or at least shouldn't be. When the jury is mainly represented by pop musicians or their representatives, it becomes very unfair for any other genre.
      Plus, in my opinion, there were better entries even if pop ballads with strong vocals are the only criteria they vote after.
