- 2024 Toyota Prius review by The Straight Pipes. The Toyota Prius XLE AWD is putting down 196 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque from a 2L 4 cylinder hybrid. At $37,650 CAD, would you take it over the Prius Prime, Tesla Model 3?

I don’t think people understand how much of a marvel of engineering the Prime version of this car is. Being able to have amongst the highest efficiencies as an EV while lugging around a 2.0L AND simultaneously being able to have the highest efficiencies as a Hybrid while lugging around a 13.6kW battery is insane. AND it goes 0-60 in under 7 seconds? Ridiculous.
And then you see the price.... Hell no.
@@TheUnreadableUser cheaper than the new base tacoma sr5 lol
@@Kill4Time255 bro you're comparing a Prius to a Tacoma 😭
@@TheUnreadableUsergiving the fact the usual truck owner does the same things as a Prius owner, that’s a fair comparison.
What's so special about that? Same price as a model 3 basically, and even though I'm not a huge fan of Tesla, the new-gen model 3 looks way better than this, is considerably quicker, full electric.
This is the biggest glow up of any car I’ve ever seen.
Disagree. It looks like a modern version of the 2nd gen Prius.
its not what it should be, dont waste money on mediocre , make them stop fooling around if they are gonna get your money.
concept car videos... how about a video on what you guys think is the ideal car? driving efficiently is speeding up especially on more downhill-ish roads at optimal fuel level and engine RPM(RotationPerSecond), steering and braking minimally but smoothly. optimal effiency for toyota 2.4 inline 4 is 2/3 pedal down in 2k-3k rpm, cvt hybrid maintain constant rpm. not sure whats best to do this in: sport mode, fuel level is more, in eco mode its less. use EV mode if optimal combustion level would speed car too much (often, if car isnt letting you do that without the EV mode, it wont let you us EV mode.) use it a bit from a stop for smooth acceleration then when car is rolling use combustion then maybe use it a bit more. smooth acceleration is part of putting less weight on tires at a moment because:
consider tire wear dust emissions and how much it cost to replace tires (most people are becoming increasingly even poorer than they already are and you can invest money into bigger money)like those "xenoestrogen endocrine disputing forever chemicals micro plastics" etc. apply less weight on tires and you'll allow more of that weight handling ability to be used for having more grip for endurance-race-pitstop-avoiding momentum preservation driving fun in the name of efficiency. being able to feel how close car is to its grip limit is good for this goal, similar to the lotus-car-enjoyers ideal.
hybrid cars are arguably better than electric car because they lower use of combustion and battery mass and all materials overall without adding so much weight. weight worsens road wear damage (repairs cost emissions , money etc) , worsens crash safety for all (except few rich people who can afford super safe cars in the small chance that they are involved in crash and value their lives and have lives we can value). this is why aptera motors originally made diesel hybrid, but now sells electric cars to max profits and reputation as a "environmentally friendly brand."
because batteries are not fully recyclable and combustion fuel is based on anaerobic bacteria that regenerates , which is why oil rigs go back to getting oil after abandoning the almost empty oil well years later . this is why arguably only combustion is proper, in rear mid engine weight distribution , rear wheel drive , with limited slip differential for minimal tire wear even in normal driver driving , for preserving momentum around turns more without too much slowing down by lateral (left /rights) g forces tires.
genetically better population is being replaced with one that is more likley to be less loyal to each other and more loyal to selfish elites, and even they probably will be replaced with others, until theres noone left except the elites and few servants. so even hybrid seems useless. so overpopulation isnt a problem so running out of materials by over use probably wont happen. can you prove climate change is caused by human caused co2 or that its just milkovitch cycle of earths magnetic field tilting etc causing stuff like the usual natural ice ages etc? also see blackgrock esg score and their climatechnge talk, and see how they promote nonsense with ot of money, see colbert report "how blagroc conquered theworld" etc . . about climat change, see tony heller, tom nelson, suspicious observers, youtube chanels. i haff to talk like this znezorshp reasons

I have had this car for 8 months and 10k driven mileage. It is literally a perfect car. Everything you could ever want out of a car. I have limited model and the tech is perfect.
Agreed! I leased an XSE (Prime) a couple of months ago and I am very happy with it. Had I purchased a Limited or XSE Premium, I’d keep it for 10+ years, so looking to upgrade after the lease is up.
Doesn't have a v8, instantly not perfect
@@levb4913cylinder count isn’t everything. Porsche’s flat six is absolutely heavenly.
@@levb4913 so u hava v8 makes 500hp and again inline 4 or inline 5 have the same power but use less fuel . dont be like this biger is better we are not in 60s
Only downside is it’s a Prius
But yeah sounds good
CVT yes but not the CVT most people know. No belts, no problems
Unless MG1 or MG2 fails.
The piano sounds while touching the hvac controls killed me
Thanks, it took me 20 minutes of editing to get right
I lost it 😂
That was great
Actually the Prius doesn't have a conventional CVT but rather a pair of tandem planetary motors that work as a transmission, the whole thing is bulletproof
It seems that most auto reviewers miss this detail and go straight to whining about the droning noise. I’ll take the drone if it means instant responses and having the most reliable transmission ever created.
It might not be exactly like other cvt but it acts like one. I rather have no noise and have instant power from EV motors.
Ecvt fact: functionally a cvt but have totally oppsite design with cvt😂
TBH, Toyota eCVT is pretty much the same in every hybrid (except Max and i-Force versions). After 25 years, you might have a lot of information on this powertrain ... you only have to type it in CZcams / Google - Car Care Nut has a really lovely and really long video regarding eCVT.
BTW, instant response is not a CVT effect, but those are electric motors filling the power gap of ICE part.
@@User.Joshua Yeah this is just pure incompetency. They're supposed to be car guys aren't they
I love how Yuri probably stole his daughter’s mini piano to record the sound for the piano key joke lol
That was all me 😂
Absolutely. This is far better than an EV for regular people like me.
Far better than an ICE vehicle too!
What is regular people like you?
We have an EV (eNiro) and it has been great for us for the last 4 years.
@@antoineleloutre3151 People that do not have house charging (live in flats). That have once a month a long trip without any charging infrastructure. People that can and use good public transport (10 €/month).
I understand that "regular" was not the correct term.
@@teovm fair enough
@@teovm It's interesting that you think of using public transport for most journeys as 'regular' because a lot of people wouldn't.
This car actually looks futuristic and cool without overdoing it!
The Prius Prime is the best value for a vehicle in Canada right now. With the federal 5k discount, it's cheaper than a regular prius, uses very little gas, and will be reliable for 20 years. Quebec and BC get an even better deal. Good luck finding one, though.
Agreed.
The Prime (charging in our driveway at the moment), cost far less than the closest priced EV but it burns very little gas. The car is six weeks old and still has over half of the dealer tank-up in the tank. It glides in EV mode for a realistic 80km. Costs us around $1.72 to charge overnight.
Best value by far.............
"Looks like a 4 door Prelude". SPOT ON! I didn't see the similarity until you flashed up the prelude photo 😂
Considering the Prelude was revealed after this, it's moreso that the Prelude looks like a 2 door Prius lol
I have a 2013 Prius Plug-in and it drives like a 30-Year-old Trash Can with an Engine! So perhaps this is my new car! Thanks for the Awesome Reviews Guys!!!
After having an AWD car in Canada, theres zero percent chance id buy an economy car without it. Most people who commute far enough to justify an expensive commuter for the fuel economy, is going to be driving through winter conditions where AWD is the undisputed GOAT. Then you can also go to your cottage and not get stuck spinning your wheels trying to go up a steep gravel incline.
I love the way Yuri looks like he just rolled out of bed and started work and Jakub looks like he woke up at 5 am and got everything ready and prepared 😂
This is the happiest I’ve seen anyone drive a Prius
Very happy to see you two guys reviewing everyday vehicles as well as the more exotic or wishlist cars. Please keep The Straight Pipes going strong with this kind of variety.
I absolutely love the microscopic camera shots.
the piano noises while you were smashing all the buttons had me howling... thanks for the super vid
The BZ4X/Solterra made more sense for me with all the incentives and rebates. I don't need gas. But I am glad to see I share common parts with such a popular model.
Hey, while I'm early, Yuri is the "gauge cluster" display an LCD or an OLED? Just something I've been super curious about, thanks!
So as a Californian, I can give you a reason why awd is so convenient. If you go to the mountains there is chain control, but if you have awd and snow rated tires you do not need to use chains. For someone that snowboards like 20 days a season it is great to have.
For the most parts, no need for chain in California Snow season. I used to work up on Big Bear. I drive up and down with my top down fwd bug
As a Californian, asking another Californian, how many Californians have snow rated tires?
@@scribklu any all seasons with an m+s is considered snow rated to caltrans
@@merrichoang6858 if you go early on a pow day I beg to differ. Sometimes they just don't really check like they are supposed to
They checked ever car last time I went
Most cars in Calif comes with all season but chain control dictates AWD and all season tires to go chain less
Got some terrible friends willing to film all this without telling you about your bedhead!
My 91 Honda CRX got 49.9 on the freeway.
One of the best cars ever.
The CRX was super light. I think it was 2200 pounds.
My 1986 got that as well, even doing 80 mph on the freeway. The CRZ should have been a proper successor with ICE engines. Favorite car along with the Miata.
Don't get me wrong - I owned a '90 CRX for 5 years back in the day and LOVED it. I only sold it because I bought an S2000. BUT...that 50mpg CRX was likely an Hf model and had a top speed only marginally above your MPG (I had a DX and it was slow but didn't quite get 50mpg). The CRX had precisely 2 seats, no safety features (save a seatbelt), was immensely tiny, had absolutely crap radio, and was prone to leaking. This new Prius gets its MPG while being gigantically faster while offering significantly more space for people and/or luggage, has very good tech, is very comfortable, and has excellent safety features. Comparing the two cars and saying "but I got this mpg before" is like saying you were once able to make it to the North Pole on a dog sled when looking at the Top Gear Polar Special. Sure it happened, but that's about the only thing in common between the two forms of transport.
@@afterburn2600 some how the JDM version had a back seat.
I have the 24 prime. Its amazing. I get 80+ miles to the gallon i cant tell people enough how much i love it
The flashing ambient lights is to warn you that the car in front of you is slowing or coming to a stop.
the microscopic lens thing is cool, would love to keep seeing stuff through it in future reviews
12:15 piano sounds made me think it was from my next door co-worker lol 😂 Awesome video, thanks!
Idk why companies are so obsessed with low profile tires, give me them meaty sidewalls for more comfort.
If they made a wagon, I might consider buying one instead of an SUV.
I kinda want to slap a widebody kit air suspension and some super wide wheels and make the coolest DD ever. This car has some really cool body lines and styling potential
I like the lock beep and the unlock beep beep
Great review!
my older prius (2019) has more driver's headroom space inside, cuz toyota had to make this new one more aerodynamic and have the highest point of the car located past behind the driver's seat area. The neighbor I have down the street tells me he frequently hits his head on the top door well area while getting in and out of his 2023 prius, and he's 2 inches shorter than me and I'm over 6ft.
Jakub: I'm gonna power wash my driveway.
Yuri: Sweet, i'll bring my microscope lens!
👽🤷♂
Those little designs on the dash remind me of Windows 3.1 screen backgrounds 10:38
I think Toyota did a good job at pitching this generation of the Prius. If I may, Toyota know that the market is congested and they also know that they need to sell more hybrids. Thus, this Prius generation came to be. I think it was right timing especially since Toyota hasn't went all in on EVs. I suppose a possible slogan for this generation of the Prius is something in the line of "A performance hybrid!"
My dealer told me 2 1/2 - 3 years to get hold of this... :/
3:22 perfect for playing Jingle Bell during Christmas
I love the piano sound
It honestly looks pretty cool. I'll be in the market for a new commuter in the next year or so, will definitely be giving this a closer look.
The larger wheels on the prius are ridiculous. Get me a soft riding, higher efficiency, lower cost tire with some MEAT!
Agreed, this thing needs 16" wheels at the absolute largest. The rubber band tires this and similar cars ship with are nothing but a liability, especially if you live somewhere with poor road quality.
"Unless you're in Qc" hahaha loved it! T'as bien raison.
The ambient flashes to let you know that the car has moved and time to go. It's handy if your not paying attention in traffic...lol
@itsreallyjakub the wireless charger is on the center console closest to the passenger. If you're in the passenger seat it's next to your left thigh. Phone pocket works better than most car wireless chargers but it's not perfect. 11:51
I love the piano sounds for some reason.
I have two jobs both far away. One is mostly driving throughout the city maintaining computers so a lot of driving stopping walking starting engine , driving stopping. I spend 50 USD per month on gas
Dude you should buy a used Tesla Model 3 now while prices are down! You could get a nice example for about $20k
Was never a prius fan but I would totally own one if there was ever a deal. I like how sleek looking they are exterior wise but the interior can use a redo. Its funky looking me.
I actually really want one of these cars. I fully believe that hybrid is the future over full electric and I just love the way this thing looks for whatever reason
What!? I love the honk when you lock the car. I can easily find my car without having to use the panic, I can know I locked the car when I'm not close to it. I also have a honda crv and that quiet beep is not loud enough in a parking lot
That Prius 🎉🎉🎉🎉 looking great!
If you live in a snow belt in Canada and want to feel confident driving fast through a snowstorm (which seem to only happen a few times a year now days) than you might want AWD. Otherwise you don't need it. Some places further north or out east should probably have AWD or even 4WD. Southern Ontario has no need imo.
The blue ambient lighting flashes when the traffic in front of you starts moving and you're still on the brakes. Just bought a Prius Prime and my family was disappointed I bought a car which failed the visor test. But...great car otherwise.
I thought that’s what it was! Thanks
lol, if the visor test is the only drawback, I think you are doing ok. 😉 Along the same vein, it is a bit annoying they removed the sunglasses holder in the roof, but also not a deal breaker... Only real complaint is they put the slower 3.5kw charger in Prime rather than the 6.6, but it seems to be space-related. Ah well, I love my 2023 Prime anyway. 😎
Bad reputation from Ghana. 😢😢
I'm from Ghana and I really enjoy your review guys. Thumbs up 👍🏾
Seriously how did we sink so low as a country I'm from Ghana too. I love this channel anyways.
Hey can any one help with recommendations on a brake repair mechanic near Mississauga area?
Now do a Prius vs Camry comparison test.
the piano playing .... 10/10
Yuri, with the..."Supra Wiper". Save 😂
Thanks for putting Metric measurments instead of the weird ones
it gets hilly in some parts of montreal so AWD is pretty essential during the winter
XLE with AWD and a fixed glass roof is my spec!
As a 2006 then 2013 Prius driver, in Chicago...you do NEED AWD for winters, just in case......I LOVE my Prius but was planning on buying something else WITH AWD until they added that option to Prius.
Thoughts on this generation of Prius vs new Honda civic hybrid that may be coming out this summer? Love the look of the hatchback civic much more than the Prius, but Honda has been teasing the civic hybrid for over a year now with no updates
Prius has been the most efficient hybrid for well over a decade. Reliability and resale value on the Prius would be better. Given the price of the battery replacement that can be a huge incentive as some battery’s can last 100k miles longer than others depending on how you drive. Honda civics are good cars to though but generally people don’t recommend getting first gen cars. You’d probably be fine either way.
Is this worth the price difference from the corolla hybrid?
Yes Corolla has 1.8 older hybrid system
Definitely. Not only is the Prius more fuel efficient, it also has a much nicer interior, better tech, and more cargo space. Prius is faster too, a lot faster
I love complaining about lock chime, but no issue with dual exhaust un necessarily tooooo loud, in the middle of a night.
I can't believe I hadn't realized you guys hadn't reviewed a normal Prius and just the Prius Prime!
Well, to the people out there that want to help the environment I would most definitely recommend you get a hybrid, either a regular Hybrid like this Prius or a Plug-In Hybrid like a Prius Prime (Or any model you like) Because they genuinely help the world and science is not good enough to have great EVs for everyone right now!
the prius's CVT isn't a traditional belt/pulley thing, it's toyota's own 'e-CVT' with planetary gears
Wannna see your guys thoughts on the Ioniq 5N
Soon
Yeah no every car I’ve had pissed me off with the lock noises. First press locks the doors, no noise. Second click summons forth the full-body, somebody cuts you off, almost louder than just using the horn volume honk. I have to look for the lights or stand beside the door to listen for the locks themselves because sometimes I press the button and it doesn’t lock, either didn’t press it hard enough or the battery is dying. It’s nice to have the piano key feedback or the gentle, quiet beep to at least let me know the car got a signal from the fob.
Oh. You mean the car with the massive recall
Is the height of this vehicle still shrunk? What I remember when I tried the newest Prius is that it was hard to get in and out of, and the rear seat was unusable to me.
I am 6 foot 2 with shoes on and hit my head getting into the back seat on the new Prius. My hair rubs the headliner.
Front is low but workable. Back is bad, you can't lean back at all. Usable for children, and short-haul for adults, only.
piano noises at 12:15 made me almost JUMP out my chair holy smokes
Kind of laughed at the rear window being too narrow segment. Obviously never driven a '73 Mustang fastback or a ''73 Gran Torino Sport. Learned to drive on the latter.
This is the way to go
I think this would look better lowered and different wheels. Not enough power for me but still a neat car
The “piano tone” should be changeable to the usual Toyota lock/unlock tone, but the dealer would have to plug their computer in the shop to change that setting
I don’t even see Prius in my area of California anymore. Teslas, Rivian and BMWs seem to be the top three.
Toyota hybrids don't actually use a CVT. They call it eCVT, but they don't really have a transmission in the traditional sense. They do sound and act the same with the no shifty drone, but no actual CVT transmission.
For me that prius body resembles an old Mazda 323F (1994-1998)
I wish I could fit in it. If they made a wagon version like a prius V it would be in my driveway
Wish I got this instead of my tesla 4 years ago. Now with the price dropping im stuck with it till the wheels fall off
That steering wheel/cluster positioning is very Peugeot.
I prefer the previous generation styling. Lol. Yes I’m serious. This version I just don’t like it. Looks even lower to get into. You have to duck and crawl into it I’m assuming. The cargo area got smaller. I don’t know. The previous version was nice. I test drove a white 2019 Prius. I liked it. The AC was sooooo cold. It was 100 degrees that day and the car was sitting in the lot all day in the hot sun and it cooled down like nothing. My glasses were foggy. I never been in a car like that before. I don’t know if it’s because it was white color etc. but I noticed during the 20 minute test drive the gas gauge went down a bit. I was expecting it not to at all being a hybrid. 🤷♂️ what gives. But to this day I still think about that air conditioning lol.
Previous generation had a spare tire too. 5th gen doesn't in the US.
can you do the bz4x please
lmao, the piano effect on the physical buttons
My parents have a hybrid Corolla Cross and they're also getting 5l/100km. I surprised the Prius isn't able to do better than a Corolla Cross.
I would consider this. In the downsizing phase
QQ can you force it into electric only mode or does it decide ?
the damping is really good for an economy car
The Prime version is awesome.
toyotas always will be in my heartt
I agree of you live in an appartement, or have long drives regurlarly.
the MG3+ seems like a solid competitor
Yes EV make sense if you’re in the right situation. I live in SoCal and have a mustang Mac e , have full solar power for home and car. So I have zero cost for fuel. Not bad nice car better than most.
Please Review corolla hybrid AWD 2024
Because the world could always use more Prius drivers.
lol @ 14:25 towing in Quebec😂
Their "XLE" has no sunroof?
If you went to Whistler 10 times a year every winter + climbed up Cypress once per week, what's would you choose: 1. AWD + winter tires OR 2. AWD + all-weather OR 3. FWD + winter tires OR FWD + all-weather?
In YVR and I always buy all- weather. Our temperature swings too much for winters, + im lazy. Whistlers never been a problem
You know if you guys were just selling cars for every one you reviewed I’d be sooo poor. Many repossessions but I’d buy it based on your reviews. lol
I'd like to see this vs the new 2025 Camry! Camry's also looking pretty good, plus roomier, but there's something about the Prius...
Why would they put piano black right around the shifter and cup holders, where people will most definitely scratch that up almost immediately lol
