New Toyota Prius review: Cooler than a LAMBO?!

- UPDATE: The new Prius is now coming to the UK: bit.ly/New-Prius-In-The-UK
We’ve got our hands on the all-new Toyota Prius!
Now we know in recent years the Prius has had the tag of being a bit of a lame car. However, we think the new Prius is absolutely gorgeous, and may now be considered as one of Toyota’s coolest cars!
But what’s so great about it? Well, let’s take a closer look. Starting with the design, we are getting some serious Lamborghini vibes from the back! With the swooping headline and the glass area around the taillights, we are getting some serious sports car vibes! Along the side you have smart integrated door handles for the back seats, and then up at the front you’ve got the daytime running lights and headlights combined into a cool design. All-in-all, this looks totally different to any Prius we’ve seen before… And that’s a good thing!
Step inside, and the cool design themes continue! There’s a small digital dial screen for the driver and a large infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard. Thankfully it also comes with a number of physical buttons, so climate control can also be managed through these rather than through the screen. You’ll also find a good bit of storage throughout the cabin, although we also encountered some scratchy plastics. But then again, what would you expect when the car cost from just over $27,000.
When it comes to performance, there’s only one engine choice available. It’s a 2-litre naturally-aspirated 4 cylinder, coupled with an electric motor. In the entry-level car this drivers the front-wheels only and provides 197hp. It is possible to get an all-wheel drive edition, but the horsepower is almost identical, increasing to just 199hp! There’s also a plug-in hybrid variant available, which can produce 223hp while also driving for up to 40 miles on electric power alone.
But the question is, do you agree with Mat - has Toyota finally made the Prius cool?! Let us know in the comments!

The amount of Prius’s here in the US is huge. They are very much a valued car for its role as a gas saving appliance. Even before this remodel there wouldn’t be one American city that wouldn’t have at least one from 2009. They are hand-me-down people movers and we love Toyota for making them so.
And the right hand drive Prius were made in USA Toyota factories, sure they have the best price
We live in a society where a Prius looks better than a new BMW.
I saw one of these last month at a show in Dublin, Ireland. Looks even better in the metal. A very impressive thing from Toyota, it has real presence.
No longer a boring undesired car. Great looking car with great features and reasonable amount of power.
It never was a boring undesired car, it might have been unpopular with petrol heads and people that drive Impreza's but for sensible people its an ideal car.
I personally never found it ugly or anything like that
I agree with your comment. I never hated the Prius, but also never desired one. I'm actually thinking about buying a new one to go along with my C8 Corvette. Something that has probably never been said before, and definitely something I'd never think I'd say.
it's only getting better since there's more funding to improve battery packs and electric motors. Not to mention, this design is a bridge from the older Toyota look into their future brand look (typically concept or racing design).

While I know the frustration with the CVT, I think you can have fun without banging through gears and mashing the throttle and brakes. I like these relaxing drives on the back road where I ease in and out of the throttle and just let the car flow with the road and that is no less fun than hustling a light sports car, just different.
Honestly, I really liked the CVT in my ES300h, it made for a very sumptuous and responsive ride, smooth with good torque response. The one big issue with them is the droning engine noise, and I guess Lexus addresses that issue while Toyota doesn't typically.
I have the C-HR with the 184hp engine. The CVT is performing incredibly good on mountain roads. Always at the right gear, very responsive and the torque is always applied to the wheels.
I have a 2015 Jazz hybrid,it does the same and to be honest I like the way it works.
It’s disappointing to hear that the car won’t be available in the UK. It’s great to see Toyota coming up with an appealing design, as their other models may not be as trendy, except for the Yaris GR. I hope they reconsider their decision and launch the car in the UK market, as I’m sure it would attract many customers who are looking for a more stylish Prius.

That S2000 still looks awesome after 20 years. 😂 I miss mine. 😢
Was finding comment about the s2000,
We owned 2nd and 3rd generation Prius sedans in our family. This is a great improvement with a couple of exceptions. The "A" pillar is sloped in such a way to make entrance into the front seat a bit difficult. Very easy to hit your head and a little too close once in the seat. I would have favored a slightly more upright windshield. Dashboard could have been better as well.
i just went to Japan and there are already some of this Prius rolling on the streets. It amazes me how cool it looks now, considering past generations look like grandparent cars. I also got a chance to ride one and it feels amazing. Comfortable yet ergonomical. Sure it isnt the best, but its a Toyota and a Prius. Nothing could go wrong with it
I drove the new Prius from Tokyo to Osaka and back in Japan in May, and over the course of my driving on the Touge, Tokyo's city roads and some highways, I managed to get 31km/L (which is almost 90mpg) on one run, while the average is still well over 23km/L (roughly equates to 65mpg).
Considering how good this looks and drives, this could be THE new benchmark for doing green things while being cool :)

I hope that they are still making the hybrids when I need another car. I’d only get am EV if its my 2nd car.

AWD model has an additional motor at the rear, yes. But the motor is basically only used to get the vehicle moving and then it basically turns off. We've got an AWD hybrid rav4 and it does the same here. Its a 70hp motor i think but it literally only comes on when moving off or if there is a loss of grip at low speed. It does get used for regen though.

As this car, or any with CVT were not inttended for throtle response, but rather to run the engine at the OPTIMAL RPM for the acceleration you are asking for (for the best MPG) the engine won't feel directily connected... because it isn't. I remember the Powerglide 2 speed automatic from the 50s, and the RPM was a serious compromise most of the time, given that the peak HP is in a very narrow band of RPM. Over the years, they have added more and more gears to both automaic (10 or more) and manual (six or more) to try and keep the RPM at the peak. Even then it spends much of its time at a comproise RPM. The drone you were complaining about is due to the it beiing a long stroke engine. The peak HP happens to be in the drony range. Just be happy it is doing its job of NOT being at a compromise RPM. Anyone that puts fake shift point on a CVT or eCVT should be shot! Especially if there is not an override switch! I have driven an eCVT by choice since 2007, and currently drive a 2017 Prius Prime. I wouldn't buy anything else. I have gone 575 miles on a tnank of gas, and went two 12 month periods without buying gas at all. (25 mile EV range is sufficient for my around town needs.
P.S. The "e" in the eCVT is for electric. No belts, but rather a planetary gearset (or two in some cases), two motors and the engine driving the wheels on various axis of said planetary gearset. MG2 is connected to the differential (yet another, but common to most cars planetary gearset), so spins X times as fast as the fron axle. X being the differential ratio of between 3 and 4 : 1. The ratio of the RPM of MG2 and MG1 controls the RPM of the engine. In the Prius Prime (not the regular Prius), when in EV mode MG1 helps MG2 move the car, so the engine doesn' have to start to help at full throttle. I don't know if this is true on the 2023 (gen V) Prime though. Dr. John Kelly hasn't made a video yet. ;)
Great review. Will you review the Corolla Cross Hybrid?
are we gonna ignore the voice crack @ 4:06 ?
I believe I am in the minority here, but I don't mind the constant sound of the engine when equipped with an eCVT transmission. It sounds like mechanical efficiency to me. Dropping the RPMs with every gear change is what's annoying to me... you've just cut out a lot of your peak power and now have to build it back up again.
Ye, you are definetly in the minority 😁
That's what I'm saying. Does it sound good? Not really, but I absolutely hate it when cars with CVTs fake gear changes. Like, the Prius is already not that fast, it might as well be using its full power and not dropping below its peak torque over and over just to sound cool. It's also supposed to be really fuel efficient, not sure why you would put anything but a CVT in it.
That's exactly how I view it in my Rav4 Prime. And when it's pulling away from almost everything on the road, who cares what it sounds like anyway?
@@pbear216yes the take off is excellent, same in my Lexus hybrid
@@shane6115 not even close. The Lexus hybrid is actually slower than the Rav4 Hybrid which gas 219 hp. The water noise is the same as in a portable AC when u turn up the fans. It's moisture and water hitting the draining pan or similar design. U can only get rid of heat by changing it's form. Car pumps in cold air while sucking out hot air, hot air transforms to liquid form and drains out under the car. That's why it looks like u have a leakage during the summer 😄 Or u can vaporize it as some portable ACs do with the trade off of the effectiveness.

Im not familiar, what is the difference between standard and plug in hybrid? One is getting energy from outside right? And the other?
Does solar panel come on all hybrid models? How do u change between ev and gas? Never drove these so idk. I dont want to buy one now but in a few years( i need to earn money) ill buy it. It looks awsome
Awesome video as always. What is the car in front? I can't quite make it out anyone know?
Have to admit that is a REALLY good looking design. I really like it. Make a version with more performance and I'd add it to the new car list. 1 1/2 years till new car time....
The Plug in version offers 220hp.
It looks incredible and yet we can't buy it in the UK??!
Cannot understand why it's not for sale in UK. Already on sale next door in Ireland, another RHD market. Looks great in the metal.
Bought a Beemer last year. 540d xDrive Sedan. Absolutely love it. Am blown away every time I look at it and when I drive it.
Am blown away every time I look at the fuel bill. Start feeling dizzy. Can see the stars. In broad daylight. Always drive in Eco mode when commuting, still the mileage I get is gonna break the bank if I use it as a daily driver.
This Prius looks like a good option ngl. The design is really good. Far, far better than the latest BMW 5 Series, 7 Series, and what Mercedes has done to the E & S Class. I wouldn't drive those even if somebody gives them for free. Fugly af. The previous generation S-Class is love.
Imagine how good a GR Prius would look
You don't have to lol, they made one
@davisdesigns1153 wait really?!
@@mw40_4 Only in Japan.
Rear door handles = no issue. Honda Vezel is a standard taxi in Singapore and has the same door handles. Not a problem. You simply look at the door and it takes like 1 second to work out how to open the door. Then once you have done it once you sort of know.
Yeah but he was pointing out it could be an issue for taxi drivers
Of course they use (12 volt connector), but how will you pump up the tires, via usb c? I have not met such pumps...
do they have the prius C / aqua model ? I love that car, which they made a smaller model but keep everything the same
