NEW Lucid Air review

- This is the Lucid Air, and it looks set to be the biggest threat to Tesla yet!
That’s no surprise, as it’s the brainchild of Peter Rawlinson, formerly the chief engineer of the Model S.
Starting things off with the design, not only does it look rather posh - it’s very aerodynamically efficient too. In fact, it has the lowest drag coefficient of any production car on sale today.
That suave exterior is matched by a tech-rich and very spacious interior too. With an impressive infotainment setup, a large glass roof and acres of room in the back, there’s much to like about the Lucid Air.
It even offers some mind-boggling figures, with this Dream Edition Performance delivering 1,111hp and 1,390Nm of torque!
The catch? It all comes at a pretty eye-watering cost, with European pricing starting just above £150,000.
Is it worth that asking figure? Stick with Mat for his latest in-depth review to find out…

Engineers removing completely functionable and practical buttons from their interiors to justify their overengineered infotainment systems has got to be the worst trend in motoring right now.
Buttons may cost a bit more, but I have and will make purchase decisions based on vehicle having basic physical buttons.
agree at least keep the air condition button men
You don't need buttons when you can use voice commands instead.
Well it's a race. We consumers decide. If we don't care that much - there will be no buttons anymore.

Carglass dream car 😂
@@simon_sky you say that but I bet not a single one will even touch it and I assume the front camera systems are attached to it meaning a whole adas calibration if you break the screen. Meaning even if they could you would still need to take it to a specialist garage 😂 also that's if lucid even offer the glass as a part, if it's anything like the electronics and CE industry you probably can't like modern phone screens so you have to go to the non existent lucid repair facilities.

MotorTrend drove a Dream Air with 933hp, 409 miles in one go from LA to San Francisco. When they set off it showed 503 miles range showing, drove 409 miles and still had 70 miles of range left. They drove as fast as the speed limits allowed but didn't do multiple acceleration runs in sprint mode.
Can you imagine causing a traffic jam simply because you forgot the pin to your car? 😂
@@samm4192 No! When have you been sat in traffic, switched driving modes and look down to your keys missing?
What people in the EV-industry don't get (at least in my eyes) is that we don't really need 1000+hp cars to make EVs more attractive... we need good range and a good charging infrastructure...
Higher-powered electric motors are more efficient, it's one of the main reasons you're still seeing good range with higher-powered motors.
Add that to the fact that it's relatively simple to extract high power from electric motors, and that's why you're seeing these crazy power figures.
It's the complete opposite of ICE, where extracting more power is comparatively harder and makes the engine less efficient.
Most EV volume is
You probably don't understand that car manufacturers have done their due diligence in market research to know that power figures are important in making EVs very interesting. Making normal saloon cars faster than ICE supercars is an interesting proposition. Also it does appear that it is easier to extract power from electric motors.
It’s a business strategy. First, create an expensive model with high margins to fund the next, cheaper model. Tesla’s first car was the Roadster, a $100,000 2-seat sports car, but their goal has always been to create low cost economy EVs for the masses. Model 3 is under US$40k now before incentives and they’ll likely introduce a less expensive model in the next few years. This never would have been possible without the original Roadster.
You’ve obviously don’t own a Tesla Model 3 Performance. I hated Tesla’s… then I drove one… and now I own a model 3 Performance. The power is addictive, it’s also how you get better range

For 200k they could have installed electric sunwisors. It is a layer on the glas, 95% transparent normally and gets 100% dark when powered on. Combined with touch sensors you could swipe them as far down as you need them.
They’re probably not legal. Physical sun visors are a legal requirement.
Or not... Because that just sounds super annoying...
@@josefstalin4532 Have you ever seen this in real life? It is like magic. There is nothing disturbing the view in normal situations and then a pitch black area you can summon if needed
~100K of that 200k is due to import tax, so no, they couldn't. Also, I know what you're referring to, and that is not a suitable replacement for a physical, non-transparent shield between you and the sun.

15:35 - I love how Mat showed the soft close feature, seconds before, just to slam the door there anyway. Which proves: nobody wants softclose doors! We want nice sounding clicks or slams, when closing the doors, like a G wagon.
Soft close is for moments when you fail to close the door properly when going out of the car. Without that you need to make a annoying trip back to the door to close it properly. It does not happen often but often enough.
If only you had soft close on a car you might have some clue about what you're talking about. Watching youtube videos does not qualify unfortunately,.

When Mat accelerate 20:45 from 40-70, the reaction of his face was epic
Such a beautiful car. Probably driving the same path as Tesla in the early days appealing to the rich first and with more affordable models later. And it's probably going to be a great alternative.
The problem is Tesla had no competition when they did that. Lucid needs to be better than all other alternatives to justify the price tag. I don't know if this is the case after seeing this review. Currently, their sales numbers look not very promising.
whut - at that price ... no way.
At that price, most of the rich will just get the model x. Heck for that price I could get both the model s plaid and a model 3, ans both seem to have a better designed interior (I never thought I would say that in my life)
😂
Always think the Lucid Air looks as if it could have been a Renault concept car from about 2000
I agree. The first car I thought of when I saw the rear three quarter view was the old Renault 25.
Indeed
It is more likely to be a Renault-Saab hybrid.

Great review Mat. I was rather taken by the car you were following😁. Even though I preferred the previous model with all the chrome and spinning lights.
Just a small gripe: drag coefficient is dimensionless, so you don't need to say "cd" after providing the value. "cd" means coefficient of drag, so saying "cd" after the value is like saying "Today it's 20 temperature outside".

While the majority of EVs about town seem to be Teslas, I've spotted one Lucid, one Rivian and one Mustang Mach-E and zero Ford Lightnings. Second only to the Lucid in flash is the Mercedes EQ, yet these forlornly occupy the dealer lot save for the one I saw at the dentist
he seemed to enjoy the idea of 'manual release'
Saw a few of these on the road in the US whilst driving there. They look amazing and have a solid presence on the road.
Yep. Some cars also cruising along in San Antonio.
They have a store in my local mall for some reason. Then again, it's only $90k here
I think what they need is some powerful magnets on the window and the sun visor. It then integrates somewhere when not needed (presumably door panel) and then when you need it, you take it and it will automatically clip when close cos of the magnets.
My "gaming char" works like this for the head-rest. Its magnetised. So its connected really well when needed, but if you pull it apart, its seamless.
I like just having rear captains chairs with center consul. Looks and feels great

I've cracked two windscreens in the last 12 months (heat cycling the first and a rock for the replacement). Not sure if the insurers would have been satisfied with a £100 excess for a windscreen as expensive as that one looks though!
Yes.
Apparently so based off other peoples experience. Around $700 USD to get it replaced so insurance should be ok with that.
@@tomtho1 Thankfully all of the sensors and bits that matter are not on the windshield or are on parts that glue to it, so it really is just a giant piece of glass.
what's heat cycling?
@@danielosdinia4258 Hot day, AC blowing, or the reverse - completely frozen over and turning on the heat. Also, say, being out in 0 degree weather in the winter and parking in your heated garage. Very very few cars since the 60s or so have this problem, thanks to better laminating techniques and tempered glass. Evidently they are pushing the limits of how large a piece of glass in a vehicle can be in this case.
That retractable screen is PERFECT for classic cars! Only out when in actual use. Not ruining the classic interior style.
Great review as always but i heard the hyper windscreen makes it difficult to drive in some regions especially this summer period, another review i saw the dude was very much sweating from the harsh sun…
Great review Matt. Now let's round up all the performance versions of the EV sedans and have a good old fashionedv drag race. Model S Plaid, Model 3 P, Lucid Air Dream, Mercedes EQS, Audi E-tron or the Porche version, etc etc
Add also Ferrari 599 GTB and 493bhp Toyota Celica GT-FOUR ST205 WRC.

@lushbikes Yes it's the Lucid Saphire Model but it's not in production yet. Production is set to start mid year 2023. By the time it becomes available in the UK the Tesla Roadster 2.0 would've already been out or the plaid would've gotten unlocked. The Plaid still has room be faster it is currently on a "safe tune" if you will.
@@jonathanjurena Roadster 2.0 is no where to be seen. Could be years yet.
@Ian Davis yes sir and Lucid is having tons of production issues currently as well so it's all up in the air right now. If I was a betting man I'd put my money on Tesla upgrading the Model S before Lucid making the Saphire at scale profitable.
Mat talking about soft closing doors then slams it 2 times 😂
Gold pure gold 😁
I agree with you Mat. The car here in USA is quickly on a secondhand market therefore some people do not find it as what they hoped for.
Are you sure they sell it because they don't like it? What's the asking price?.. I bet it is higher than what they paid for it.
@@_pehash it's not a vintage rare car... why would they be selling it for more than they paid?
Tesla model 3 has been advertised on the secondhand market for a little as a new economy car. The part they did not hope for was having to find a charging station that actually worked
Matt having a style over reality moment there. 19" rims with a decent sidewall are perfect for the UK. 21" with rubber bands for tyres are not even worth considering unless you like new rims on a regular basis
If I was spending that kind of money, I'd go for a Bentley Flying Spur.
Congrats man! So you've got such a money but you've got some reservations to spend it on Lucid.
Absolutely, though Bentley is more expensive still I think.
2006 model😅
About the sunroof. My dad used to drive Citroën C4 Picasso around 10 years back, and that also had a window sloping back quite a lot. (Not as much as this car though) and the sun visor there started from the roofline above the driver and was a bit like a shutter going down and then the flap could be folded down from that. In this car that would be from behind the driver, so maybe awkward to operate, and it would require a rail in the middle to have the blinds ride in, but it looks to me like this would be a better solution.
12:09 Surprised you kept that in LOL
The rattle when you slammed the frt door shut. Was that because of the frameless door glass. Needs to be sorted. Good job it has soft close doors.
"Enter PIN to drive." 😂 That moment was a perfect encapsulation of so many of the potential problems and pitfalls of electric, cloud-connected, drive-by-wire vehicles.
It's not new to be fair. A friends Citroën Xantia had an immobiliser PIN code you had to put in to start it back in the 90s 😂
I own one. PIN is if you don’t have a key but opened the car with card or app. Never once had to enter PIN when I wasn’t expecting it.
Pointless comment. It isn't anything to do with it being an electric car, the same could readily be implemented on an ice car.

I’d like to correct a few things in the video. Dream Range edition total range is 517 miles. Dream performance is around 469 miles. It’s not 550 miles. Although that doesn’t explain why you saw 3.0 mpkwh figure but it’s not as bad as you thought it is. With the sprint mode or other driving factors influence the efficiency

Hey Matt, your glasses frames, brand? They look amazing!
Agree completely with everything you said about this car. I recently drove one in Switzerland at their display at the Concourse D' Elegance near Geneva, and thought it was a great car too with better build quality than my sister's Tesla. Just had a few small issues that you already mentioned like floor height etc. Also, coming from Australia and being used to driving Right hand drive vehicles on the other side of the road, the width of the car was something that was very obvious to me when making sure not to clip any gutters!
Great review Matt as usual, thank you. The Lucid looks great from the outside but the inside still needs tweeking to be perfect considering the asking price.
It just seems to be Americans trying to compete with Germany. They have a long way to go and prices to drop.
To be honest, what the Amies are doing is no less than robbery in broad day light. Just take Tesla, interior is a tablet and huge amount of cheap plastic!. Exterior- wise it’s re-invention of the wheel but still there are lots of naive people who pay twice of a Merc or Bm price for Tesla coz they think Elon Mask is genius!!
I wish you'd check your facts a bit first, as well as Matt, because more than half of the price you all pay is due to import taxes. The Lucid starts at ~$80-90k in the US, so it's a bit ridiculous to blame the company for that $200k price tag when they can't do anything about _your_ country's laws.
It looks a bit unfinished in places, the steering wheel creaking would drive me mad.
It also looks a little tricky to keep in a straight line under full acceleration, like the systems arnt yet quite as resolved as the teslas.
1111 bhp is hilarious though, just a crazy output.
As a former employee I can tell you. A lot of the interior actually feels really cheap anyone that says otherwise is lying to themselves to justify the price. Example: the center console sliding cover is a thin piece of cheap wood. Those volume and ac controls are very cheap and get loose very quickly, 1 crappy wireless charger that you have to shove your phone into and won't charge the iPhone max unless it's flipped upside down. Glove box is also crap quality. The glass does not protect you enough from the sun radiation. I could go on and on lol

"It went so quickly, so quickly" is the word definition of rapid acceleration.
A Like for not measuring with 1 foot rollout, thanks Mat, keep up the good work 👍
What the hell is one foot roll out?
@@BarkerT Historically, in the US acceleration times are measured with one foot rollout. In this procedure, two light beams are used for measurement. At the starting point, the front tire of the stationary car triggers the first one. By the time, the tire crosses the second one 12 inches away, it triggers the start of the time.
Reason, why I personally find it annoying, is, because it delivers smaller numbers which get often mixed up when people think about 0-60mph or 0-100kmh times. To add to that, some car manufacturers use this for aggressive, but superficial and misleading marketing.
I am thankful, that journalists try to make measurements under clearly defined conditions. Except of course the British weather. That, no one can control.

23:45 - Why do some American manufacturers use the ‘one-foot rollout’ method when publishing 0-60 times, instead of just doing it from a full standing start?
It's how timing lights work. It's always been there, but is now noted.
To trick unknowing people into thinking their cars are faster than they really are. There is no reason to ever measure 0-60 with rollout. It is just nonsencial because it is literally simply starting the clocks after the car is allready accelerating. It is just like doing a 100 meter dash but only starting the clocks once the athelets reach the 10 meter mark.
Why would they do this? Marketing and tricking people. Tesla did it first to achieve their "sub 2 seconds" 0-60 time which they otherwhise would not be able to. Pretty much overselling your product to make investors happy. I guess Lucid started copying this stupid way of measuring to compete.
Let's see how long it takes until someone starts doing 2ft or 3ft rollouts to "achieve" even better 0-60 numbers.

it's really hard to produce mass market vehicles at a fast rate, you need a lot of money and experience to make it not garbage quality. it's more profitable to hone in on a more expensive, high end high profit margin vehicle that will sell much smaller volume, and then use those profits to scale into mass market cars
The Sapphire version of this is insane, completely walks on the Plaid
Thats what you'd expect for double the price
@@romansenger2322 never said it was a bargain! 😂
One quick update from Tesla we won't have this conversation
@@leonardhawkins9665 I'm pretty sure yes, also the track package now and the fact that Plaid is a better car overall
@@leonardhawkins9665 really?
I always prefer a single-tone car color. In addition, I wish they would even blackout the chrome hood strip. As in all EVs the low drag co-efficient wheel are hideous.I'd gladly sacrifice a slightly less drag efficient vehicles for some better looking wheels.
Anyway, the front (hood) of the car is no place to write a name, which means Lucid really needs to get an emblem.
On another note, whoever at Lucid thought that putting all your controls into the infotainment display was a good idea should be tar and feathered. The basic idea behind any driver center design should be to make driving easier, and taking your eyes off the road to fiddle with a complicated touch screen does just the opposite.
Not to mention you're putting all your "control" eggs in one basket with that single display. If it ever dies for any reason, ore even fails to illuminate, you're literally left in the dark. They at least need a backup, with an external plug or a send to your smart phone with the most basic controls.
Speaking of which, most states have laws against using a smart phone while driving, but these all these infotainment systems provides essentially the same distraction, if not greater.
Every video featuring Matt Watson is such a treat 👌 Cheers.
And not to mention slower talking Matt too? 😂 Seems like he speed reads through some of these reviews
The problem for buyers is wondering whether Lucid will still be around as a company three years from now. Will you have support for the very expensive car you just bought?
18:24 Thats got to be the biggest footprint ive ever seen
Big foot is real!! 🤣
It would be interesting to see electric cars on a dyno to test how much horsepower they have compared to the claimed figures
we need stronger dynos for that, usually they have more, horsepower is nor problem for ev.
we will soon see 5000hp and more
Current car Dynos aren't built to measure instant torque. They expect a build up since that is the power curve of gas cars. One moment of highest torque at like 7k rpm.
Hi Matt, I am from India and I really enjoy your all videos. As I am working in automotive industry from last 12 years and companies like VOLKSWAGEN, GENERAL MOTORS, KIA INDIA & now currently working with JLR INDIA
Feels good that part of my work is inside the car. 😃
The lower range would have been because you were in the fastest driving mode , you would have to be in the lowest mode and the highest regen to achieve the best range .
It is like the first Model S. I hope for Lucid to build on that car and I can’t wait to see their first Lucid Model Y. I know the next one is the Gravity which is more of a Model X. They follow the same S.3.X.Y pattern so far
Best review channel, of course thanks the host but feels sad they are late on latest cars, 😢.
whats with the images used to show the other colours at start lol look like from a game. also how sexy is the LAIR. wonder when they will come to AUS>
The technology, design, and performance of this car are simply amazing. We can't wait to see what the future holds for electric cars.
Kind shit for the price no?
1111hp and 1390Nm of torque from electric power is insane!
Still slower than the M3 or M5 competition.
@@hassanger8128 errrr…no it isn’t. It’s much faster than those…even the published times for those are far slower.
If we're going to be drowning in stratospherically priced cars, at least they should be as spectacular as the Lucid. Looks like something very special.
I like it how Mat recommends selling your Fiesta through CarWow in order to buy a Lucid.
