Who finishes higher, Manchester United or Arsenal? 🤔
As a United fan, I'd definitely say United but I'd not be disappointed if we didn't in this season. Erik ten Hag needs time to play his football and we already love what he has been able to do even though the team isn't currently playing his kind of football. On the other hand Arteta really has not many excuses left if he doesn't reach the top 4 this season though.
@Sky Bet - was this video filmed after man utd's 3-1 win v arsenal on sunday or was this filmed monday night ??
Leicester 😀

United fan here, I’m very happy with our recent performances but I have to say Arsenal. United still has a long way to go, we still need to improve in a lot of areas.
Fair play to Joe for calling out how Carragher thinks 6 games is "too early to judge" Martinez, when he'd already judged him after two games.
Time was that?
@@princenaseem295 5:05
Adam said it just before to be fair, didn't catch it the first time.
Maguire and Shaw were the problem for the first two games. Martinez has won two MOTM awards, from what I've seen he is more than capable of being a top level CB in the PL. Because Carragher was so vocal of his criticism of Martinez he is just refusing to backtrack and will have a Souness/Pogba type agenda for the remainder of his United career.
@@ih4447 still i wouldn't say he is bad or even great. Wait for the season. I would like to see him play against more physical people. Like Antonio, Watkins, Kane etc. They are taller and more physical. Martinez has good positioning and pace. Let's see how much strength he has. If he handles all of them then he is destined to be one of the best.
@@ih4447 So right. I saw this in pre season
The Athletic lads are quality on this, adding proper depth to the discussion that I always want to see from the Sky/BT pundits. Haven't seen these smaller fan debates after games before, but they are top. Need to happen regularly.
spirit of fan channel but finest of corporate staging/directing...........The Athletics reps are good bridge.
They are miles better than tv ex player pundits

The athletic boys made the video for me. All their opinions were backed up by real examples from the past which added a lot of substance and I really enjoyed it.
I felt like everything they said just felt like cliché after cliché.. it was almost like someone who doesn't watch football, studying fixtures and results, and then talking about it
@@buddajjl Are you aware of what a cliché is? There were several people that were guilty of cliché in this conversation, and it certainly wasn't the Athletic lads.
the athletic have arsenal fans eating out their arse
42:56 Carl's summation of the top 4 debate was spot on. Both Carl and David's insights and arguments were a cut above the rest.
No its not. Chelsea are weird and Tuchel figure it out so they'll finish above both? Well he hasn't figured it out since Jan.
@@ugonnao9473 if you knew football you'd know Chelsea are WEIRD! They will have the worst season and win thr Champions League, they will lose 5 games and go on a 20 game unbeaten run. They know how to WIN! They figure it out!
@@cuma4893 So Chelsea will never have a bad league season again? I can also use the season Chelsea finished outside of the Top 4 as a reason why they won't make it. Using history to ignore what's in front of you is not good analysis. They've been playing terribly since Jan and actually have less points than Spurs and Arsenal in that time frame.
The Athletic lads forever showing most ex-footballer pundits how punditry and analysis is really done; unbaised arguments based on facts and statistics. Intellectual stuff but presented in a way that is easily understood. Top stuff!
Excactly i think The Athletic is not for everyone its for a chosen few intellects who understand the game to a top notch level. Carragher sounded intimitdated by the lads to be honest
The athletic can do one. Have to pay to read their articles they won't be getting a penny from me anyway. Bundle of wet wipes
they just waffle
@@sismaibyakutaga9124 Nah, that’s just patronising nonsense. Football is actually a simple game - that is why it is so successful. If some academics chose to intellectualise it - that’s their prerogative, but don’t confuse that with having some higher understanding.
It is precisely this desire to over analyse and to stroke ones ego which gave birth to nonsense such as “xG” and from it, further superfluous metrics and measures. The Athletic were the prime protagonists in pushing this rubbish, as it pushed their intellectual USP narrative.
Football is simple. Don’t ever forget it.
@@imconfused1237 I agree with you to a certain extent. Football is a simple game to understand and shouldn't be made to sound like it's a mathematical stat module at Uni. So my point of intellect came from a place of where the journos at The Athletic don't critic aimlessly with no base and sound like they're attacking individuals like the some pundits and media do. They have constructive criticism and they dig deep with their information that is very credible to know why certain things are happening. I really admire that about them
19:28 is David Ornstein showing why he's a legend. Gary was reading Arteta's subs like 'that's not Pep's way'. And Ornstein explained why it was exactly Pep's way. I love how he just sits in the corner, waits for everyone to finish their turn and then delivers the knockout last word. Brilliant!
Those subs cost Arsenal the game. I'm struggling to see what Arsenal fans see in Arteta. 4th season in and they still haven't made top 4. If that was any other top 6 club he would have been sacked a long time ago.
@@ih4447 Not an Arsenal fan here, but I can see why they back Arteta. Fact is, they haven't been a top 6 club for a long time, and a progression can be seen on the pitch season on season. He's recruited relatively well, and with a clear plan in motion.
It’s because Ornstein is a journalist in the true sense of the word, he’s not sneaky, he doesn’t play favourites and he doesn’t make shit up. Sky sports have an obsession with Klopp and Pep to the point they act like they never make errors. Ornstein is happy to point out that that simply isn’t true, everyone no matter how great they are at their job, has weaknesses and make errors

Carragher starts losing the Mourinho argument switches to arsenal transfer window. Still surprises me how some of the pundits are blind to some of the facts if it doesn’t support a narrative. Was Jose backed, in a couple of seasons yes? But last season no. There is a difference.
Mourinho wanted maguire😂😂😂😂😂
@@ballabel8970 tbf, Maguire would suit a Mourinho system far better than a system that plays a high defensive line
@@harrymic75 yeah but you employ the manager to make the footballing decisions. Do you think the board were thinking of Bailey or Lindelof in their decision or it was because they didn’t want to spend the money that year?
Same shit with Robbie. They're absolutely delusional because they've won a few games in a row. As Adam rightly said, they finished behind a Spurs team last year that switched managers halfway through, and were 1 position above United who had 3 managers and collapsed during the season. When Gary and Joe say that if Jesus is injured Arsenal are done as a top 4 prospect, suddenly Robbie changes what he's talking about.
They're acting as if United got completely lucky with all of their goals, rather than the fact that Ten Hag out-managed Arteta in the last 20 minutes of the game. Do they not understand that Ten Hag was also a Pep assistant, and has gotten far further in the Champions League than Arteta ever will, with a worse team? The moment Joe and Adam start talking about how United have a substantially better squad depth then Arsenal, Robbie goes 'you're naming names, I'm naming tactics'. Like yeah Robbie, its all well and good having a great starting XI, but when your backup forward is Eddie Nketiah vs Cristiano Ronaldo, you've lost the debate.
Everything Mourinho said has been proved right over time. The United owners realised he wasn’t there to make them money, he was there to purely get success and trophies which costs more money than getting top 4 every season.
Loved this, a great balance of personalities. David Ornstein and Carl Anka added good insight with their calm and collected views which clashed nicely with fan opinion and Jamie and Gary pushing for answers.

I love that they do this with fans, adapting with the times.🔥
The argument on Martinez boils down to this for me. How did we play with Maguire, park the bus counter attack and he didn’t need pace for a ball in behind he had height to defend loads of Ariel balls because that’s how teams attacked us when we sit in the box. Martinez is going to play in a high line and has 9/10 qualities everywhere but height. His Ariel ability is still extremely underrated. But fact is when you defending playing a high line you face balls in behind not crosses for the majority of the time. You can face 5 crosses when playing a high line per 90 but face 15-20 when parking the bus for example. So yes he’s 5 ft 9 but the risk is actually minimal because the style we play means he isn’t gonna face those deadly crosses into the box anywhere near as often. But he has the pace to defend those balls in behind which Maguire doesn’t and we’ve seen how that went against team who we had a chance to attack and play a high line against at the start of the season. Furthermore we’ve played counter attack and defended deep and won the last 4 only conceding 2 goals and been one of if not best defences in the league when playing the back 4 we have after swapping out Maguire and shaw. And we’ve had to therefore defend all those Ariel balls in the last 4 games. So he’s even proving people wrong there as well already
That photograph of Martinez heading the ball while his leap has him towering over Jamie Vardy. That showed how good he is in the air.
Maguire is hated alot, somewhat justified but yes it is true his aerial ability is pretty much unmatched. 2 seasons ago, maguire aerial duels stats were higher than van dijk himself.
But aerials are not the end all of defending. Maguire is too slow, not agile enough and cant fit in an attacking formation. Martinez, though not as tall, has already shown he can hold his own
Well said. Don't forget he's also an actual ball playing CB, probably the only one in the team. He's a good player
You mean 2 years ago when Van Dijk missed 80% of the season?
Maguire is not an intelligent defender, he's a blocker, doesn't have the brains to be a man utd ch especially not a captain ffs,its embarrassing how bad he is..he wasn't bad at Leicester yes, but completely different for playing for man utd, fuck me, he's captain and doesn't even know what side of the tunnel to come out of..totally embarrassing!!came on against arsenal and got booked within 10mins ffs,he's a liability..not good enough end of!!!!!

Most of Carra’s viewpoint here are as erratic as his defending back in the days. You’re inviting David Ornstein and Carl Anka from The Athletic and you gotta know what they’re good at (based on their writings and observations). Enjoyed reading and now even enjoying listening to them.
Spot on about how it is in the middle of a journey for Arteta, and the pragmatism played by ETH now since he doesn’t likely want United to play like how they’re playing now. It’s all about showing up, giving 100% and heart on the pitch, which is in the end is the bare minimum.

I love how the Man Utd side answered Cara's question about transfers! The reactionary nature and lack of a transfer strategy is our biggest weakness as a club .
exactly this. People just see the number of the total spend (£200m this summer) and expect us to be happy. Even though they know the context of that spend is a joke.
What makes it worse (as pointed out by Joe Smith here) is that we keep being promised that the strategy will change etc, but it never does.

Needs to banish him ASAP. Conte, Pep, Jose or even Klopp would have stripped him of the armband at a bare minimum following his interview leading up to the Liverpool game alone last April or the disgusting antics of his family. If that was a foreign player or an English player like Sancho doing even 1% of what maguire has they'd have been fined + dropped at a bare minimum. Roy Keane was sacked for much less

I like how Robbie bigged up how far ahead they finished ahead of Man Utd. They were lucky really to finish that high up. Must be the first team to finish 5th and be 17th for big chances created with 39, the lowest in there history. In fact Arteta has Arsenal lowest big chances created stat every year. He is one of the worst managers. Basically how they played at OT is them playing well, lots of passes and not many clear chances all game.
@@Nissangtr786 it wasn't luck and we were 10 points above united. Obviously everyone knew about how poor we were with Lacazette up top and now we have Jesus. Jesus is a much higher quality striker that runs short and in behind. It took Arsenal 9 games to score 9 goals and this season took 3 games.

To me being 5ft9 is no different to being a defender who is slow, or isn’t great on the ball or isn’t built like a tank - as long as every other aspect of your game is on point you can play and even excel at the position.
yes but for two equally capable centre backs, height is definitely an advantage. cb are expected to win the most headers and provide threats from set pieces. not as important as being at least 6ft 1 for a goalkeeper though

‘The overlap’ is an apt name as they spend the whole time taking over each other. Much harder to watch which at times is a good debate
nothing wrong with playing counter attack and getting the win. it looked as if arsenal played much better but the xg for the game was pretty much the same. 1.47 vs 1.52. ten hag won the brain battle this game. good for him. hope he does well.
Yeah, it's about being efficient. When Arsenal were dominating the ball in the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, they had a few good chances, with at least 2 they should have definitely scored, before United's 2nd goal. Up until that point, Arsenal were largely leading United in most metrics, but the goal and Arsenal's substitutions changed the game. Eventually, Arsenal made a mistake in a defensive transition and United scored their third. At this point, their xG largely became equivalent. United defended well as a team to see the game out then.
If Arsenal were more clinical in their finishing the game could have been very well won by them, and we might have been bashing United for not trying to play as much and trying to hit Arsenal on the counter. As is with so many other PL games, this was a game of moments.

the only issue I have with our performance was the game management from Arteta. After we scored to make it 1-1 it felt like we went to schoolboy mode where it was everyone was bombing forward and everyone out of position. We needed the manager captain to step up and tell them lets just calm it down and try not to force it which is what cost us in the end.

Congratulations to both sets of owners for running tremendously profitable clubs, responsibly, and starting to enjoy footballing success.
Carl touched on a very interesting point near the end in that owners of clubs don’t make decisions emotionally how football fans would regarding their clubs which causes frustration. I agree with this to an extent but I think with the Glazers it’s not that they’re making non-emotional decisions it’s that their making poorly calculated decisions with the emphasis always on short-term profit and security of their positions in mind and not the long-term success of the club which would actually secure their priorities way more effectively. The problem we have at Utd is that we always make money, even after what will have been a dire commercial season last season we’re still able to spend and they’re still able to take out their dividends and no meaningful long-term changes get made again really, just changes of personnel employed. Then you factor in the fact that for utd unlike the clubs around us the fans wholly finance our operations and the debt the glazers put on us, rather than the debt being used to finance our short-term operations or having billionaire investment like our rivals, the unaccountable poor decision making of owners who should have never been allowed to have buy the club in the way they did becomes absolutely infuriating.
Robbie lets himself down at times. Dial down the bitterness a touch, big man
Well this is a delight. Wasn’t expecting another Overlap fan debate for a couple months
Great show lads just think with production lighting could have been better 👌
Really great to have Carl here, for the perspective
